I started bass fishing a few years ago, and I’ve never had a mentor or been shown how to properly use a chunk trailer. This is a great video! I'm excited to kick off the kayak tournament season on March 1. I will definitely be trying this technique with my jigs. Thank you for sharing; it's truly awesome!
Thats the way I have always rigged my chunks as well. I still rig them that way on my bucktail jigs, but I do take a knife and do some modifications to mine especially when using pork. You talking about the old tri hull boats brought back lots of memories. Tri Hull Holiday bass boat with 115 Johnson, paper graph and an Evinrude trolling motor. Great times growing up.
Hilarious Chris! I like that you said there are no absolutes. just whatever works and inspires confidence. I always have rigged mine with the skin side up (in my OCD way) to mimic the back of a dad or gill, and the fat down to mimic the belly. Then again, it might be better to rig it belly up, to mimic a dying baitfish. Sheesh! Son, just get that thing in the water! Love it!
@aspiringtournamentanglerch7277 That would be fantastic, payment to you PayPal, we keep in touch, I appreciate it very much, have a good day Just curious what state you live in.
I always had the chunk down on pork frigs. When that dye started to wear out of that fat chunk, it would turn whitish like the belly of craw or most bait. It's like painting the colors of a crankbait upside down😁
Chris, I think the reason we all put the chunks on skin side down back in the day was if you put one on fat side down, you couldn't get it back off the hook without cutting it off. If you put it on, skin side down, it'd easily come back off the hook. You'd just turn the chunk sideways, and the barb of the hook would slide right out of the pre-cut slit in the skin of the chunk.
First thing I saw when I dropped off those boxes and rods was those blue gloves laying on the desk. Scared me at first then I laughed the whole way home. Eplained the story to my wife. She said I am never goin in his shop
That's how I hook it too and have been for 42 years. Scratch around a little and you might hear a little jig fishing associated with my name. Yea, I saw the mouth of Missouri's video. It's funny, he's tearing down fishing worse than anyone and doesn't realize it or doesn't care.
I always heard that if you put the smooth/skin side down, your jig will fall faster. And with the fat side down it falls slower. Just food for thought....
Now that they're plastic chunk, to me the debate is if Im gonna stick it on the hook like that, or thread it from the front hook thru the entire chunk to make it compact& not flap.

Glad you enjoyed it! Hope you do well in the tournament!
Whatever works for you…. That’s the right way. 👍🏻
100%
Sounds like great advice from your dad ! A segment full of truth ! Thanks Chris !
Thanks pal!!
Can’t stop laughing. That sounds like my grandfather….haha! Thanks
love it!
My FIL didn't think it mattered and he was incredible with a a bucktail jig in the East Tennessee Lakes.
Agreed! just get it on there!
😂😂… love the good old stories.
Thanks!

Yeah we always did some mods to those too split the legs etc. I knew someone would be able to picture it perfectly in their memorys!!
Great memories! Been told that a many of times : just get your bait in the water son 😂
I might have said that myself to these kids while being a boat captain.

Dang buddy, now ya got me confused!!
Beautiful, I've never seen that bait in Sweden, thank you for teaching me new things🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪
Your welcome!! I would ship ya some but don't know how that works but i will try!

I had a friend that said the same thing. i just never clued in........
With the types of plastics that are around it's SOOOO much easier to use the soft plastics!
True!!!!
Absolutely it doesn't matter which way it goes ! Good stuff boss
agreed. Glad I'm not alone on it!
The only thing I worry about whenever bass fishing with a pork trailer is what am I going to catch 1st a bass or a catfish.
I say, Just add water!

Now that sounds legitimate! Took me forever to get the hang of the turn and slip the hook out!!
All I remember is they where a pain in the but to get off the hook when I was a kid
You could say the same on grubs. Both ways work as long as the hook doesn't interfere with tail.
Be careful the direction of a curl tail could open up a big can of curl tails!
Sounds like ol dad the best jig fisherman was a good one bc he kept it simple
Yes!
I just blew my own mind. What if the chunk isnt upside down it's the jig upside down. Lord its getting late
Im getting dizzy myself!
Dad always told me “son don’t let that bait get sunburned “ get that thing back in the water….
Agreed!!!

That pair laying ther looked pretty rough! LOL
😂 love it - now you need to make a video about real pork vs plastic!!!!
I will try. I miss the pork even though I think the plastic may be better.
The pretentious ones will argue with a fence post
Or with a pork frog!!!! LOL

I will. What area are you in!!
Caught lot big bass on chunks last 50 years. I am your daddy!
I would love to purchase some of those black hair jigs. Is there any way to get some without ordering through social media?
Call me 479-644-6455
Thats how my Dad taught me as well!
Good dad!!
Best I remember the hook would go in the pork chunk easier on skin side first. Plastic replaced pork, but I never changed rigging.
Agreed..... Same here!
Do you tie your own jigs? Can’t find bucktail with a weedguard nowadays
yes sir. We build couple types of bucktail jigs.
Fiber gard and cable gard. give me a call 479-644-6455 Ar custom Tackle.
I always heard that if you put the smooth/skin side down, your jig will fall faster. And with the fat side down it falls slower. Just food for thought....
I can see that there could be some advantages one way or the other! Thanks.
I miss my dad… You just painted a vivid picture.
Me too..
I went "MEAT" side Down! No.1 Jumbo!
One of my buddys always did it that way. Loved the 1 too!

I have that with the super chunk!
That’s the way we did it except when using white with green spots frog chunk on a white Bucktail. Wanted green spots facing up.
I can see that. That white with green spots was awesome!!!!
@@davidlannom4355 my fav uncle josh color was black blue or dark blue
Trust your daddy!!
thanks lol
I've attached the chunk both ways over the past 45 years and it has made no difference in my results. I try not to overthink some of this stuff...
I 100% believe KISS method!
