Last season I was out with a buddy, different boats (Fishing yaks) I'm still on a Humminbird Hook 4. He's on FFS. I see an Osprey dive and pluck a fish out of the lake. I shout to my buddy if he saw that. Didn't even look up from the screen. Just said nope. What an absolutely magnificent sight to behold. SMH.

Absolutely 💯 agree. Randy is trying to save the unique special aspect of the sport that makes it real and special. People are ruining the sport of bass fishing 🎣 with this unneeded level of technology, just to boost their low egos and make them think they are a "pro" fishermen. Real bass fishing is NOT watching a bass move in real live time under your boat....that is cheating and beyond unfair for the fish. Fishing is a sport of various skills and spotlighting should not be used.

We have kayaks and have had good success on the small local nTX. bodies of water but not as much on the larger ones we have tried. On Black Friday, a local retailer had LS at 37% off so I bought it. This summer we hope to fish some lakes way up north (MI) and hope it will help. We catch & release and have 0 tournament aspirations.

You are correct regarding bowling, don't forget about the synthetic lanes now instead of wood, that is what made them change the cover stock on the balls. I've had two 300 games, one the old technology and one with the new technology. The 2nd one was much easier than the first one. Old technology i carried a 192 average, new technology I carried a 215 average and it wasn't because I changed anything or got that much better, it was the upgrade in technology. I don't bowling anymore, and I won't stoop to using FFS. That's just not why or how I choose to fish. That's just not fishing in my book, keep up the fight Randy!

You made the comment about total power in politics, but businesses should be allowed to make choices that they feel are best for their business as long as they are not breaking laws, or putting people at risk, right? You make videos based on your views, and get choose the content you put out....same thing. The one thing we ALL need to remember is that these organizations are businesses, they are in it to make money....if you don't like it, don't support them, DONE! Obliviously by your comments regarding NPFL not getting the traction they should, you understand that there are many more people that disagree with your FFS views, what's the old saying, the proof is in the pudding? Stating that people are selfish because they use FFS is one of the most ignorant things I think I've ever heard you say. I am confused, because a person embraces technology, and uses it within the rules of the sport they are competing in, in no way makes them selfish. As far as the comparison to bowling....FOX Sports reported over 27 million viewers in 2024 and all time high. Looking forward more tip videos, FFS and Drama not so much.

It’s not about ratings. It’s about doing the right thing. It all boils down to people would rather be entertained than educated. Bassmaster, the PBA and other sports organizations are institutions in their own sports and they should set the bar at a higher level. However, due to inept management, those institutions are being degraded by decisions like this.

I fully expect sonar guided lures that will seek out fish and swim to them sometime in the near future. I've got a friend who is trying to convince me to get forward facing sonar and I don't know how to tell him that I don't want to. I don't want to play a video game while I'm fishing, I want to fish. If I don't catch as many fish on a particular day I want to know what I am doing wrong, I don't want technology to fix the problem for me. It's like DEI for fishing and in the case as you mentioned for bowling as well. It removes the requirement for skill. Basically, everybody gets a trophy.

Worked for Bayer developing urethane coatings for bowling balls. Brunswick was a big customer. Very interesting chemistry. Through heat and rotational friction of the ball, hook could be increased at the end of the roll upon approach to the pins. Coatings are huge. Cool Science. Like a pitcher’s spitball, or a mud-treated baseball, surfaces are a huge factor in dynamics. A golf ball with no dimples ia a disaster. Center of gravity is also interesting, for both bowling balls and fishing lures. A big deal with the jig minnow was moving the center of gravity upward on the jig head, with the specific intent of increasing roll, a lure action that was previously undervalued. Love the science.

if you look back prior to 1975 in missouri, we had no length limits. we went to 15 inches, and reduced the bag limit from 10 to 6. today we still have a great bass fishery because of that, even with the increased preasure. that is clear evidence that size and bag limits work! if you don't believe that, then lets do away with releasing fish and bag limits, and it will be obvious what mortality, pressure, and catch rates have to do with sustainability!

Forward sonar reminds me of those big plastic kids pools that are set up at sporting goods conventions and shows that are filled with fish. They're for all the little kids to plop their line in and pull out a fish and get all excited. Wonderful for the kids and I have no problem with it. Seems to me a so called professional angler using forward facing sonar should have more pride, because I see very little difference between that and the little tub full of fish the kids are having fun with.

I hear you...but...if the problem is that technology has improved our ability to accomplish a task (in this case, fishing), then how far back up the evolutionary chain of technology should we go? There was a time when fishing lines were made from horse hair, and all the lures were tied from fur and feathers. Do you want to go back to that? I mean, if you were writing this 40 years ago, you could insert (plastic worm) instead of (forward facing sonar) and all your points would be exactly the same. Do you use any sonar at all? Trolling motors? 250HP outboards? Reels with high gear ratios? All of these technologies are game changers. I am really curious why FFS is the one that you determine is one step too far. Is this an arbitrary standard, or is there an objective standard that you are appealing to?

If you want to use it, use it. If you don’t want to use it, don’t. You might as well embrace the technology and learn to use it. If not, you be competitive for long. Only reason I don’t have it is because I can’t afford it!

I’m just waiting on someone to masterfully put together the challenge: “Hey, FFS addict-fish this (or my) circuit that doesn’t allow FFS. Let’s see how you do.” I think it’s a lose-lose proposition. The FFS-er will either decline because he/she knows they can’t persist in the long run using traditional skills. Or they’ll accept the challenge and won’t persist in the long run, because they don’t use traditional skills.

The color "c" lector was wrong. Unfairness. New technology is wrong. So where is your line drawn for too much of a good thing? When and where is the stopping point?
My opinion like yours is off limits of the lakes until the day of the tournament. If they're not controlling the limits of technology. Limit the time on the water.

I don't think that competitive fishing needs to turn away from FFS because 99.9% of people that fish will never compete, or probably even own a $100k bass boat. What the pros do to pull in massive fish doesn't matter to them, but it's still fun to see people perform at a high level and have very close weigh-ins. Competitive fishing is for the spectator who wants to see the super high numbers and have a level of tension mount as every oz matters. I think it's very much removed from what most people do for fishing. So those skills you are talking about still matter and are still relevant and thanks to content creators are being taught to more and more people and I think it's ok that this is happening separate from the competitive scene. I think fishing is less like bowling and more like cycling, where the top .1% of cyclist that compete in the tour de france have insane gear, suits, helmets, etc. but most cyclists aren't going to do any of that and still care about bikes that are comfortable or have certain quality of life features that would detract from the competitiveness at the high level.
With that being said I think there is also room to have competitions that don't have these technologies if that's what people want, and obviously those exist still and the existence of ffs doesn't prevent those from happening.

I love you content when it comes to fishing . But I don’t want to start anything because of that but when it comes to technology I know your not using a flip phone to record your videos or a old school giant video recorder so with that being said your ok with using the newest and greatest technology to make your videos and make money for you and your family but not using ffs to put mor fish in your boat to cash more checks ? It’s not the technology that will destroy the fishing it’s the man or woman standing above the unit . That’s how it’s been since the flasher , the first boat , the first bait caster . It’s all technology

MAN! You just don't get it. When will it be enough? When will it go too far? Are you a pro ? Do you use it to cash more checks? Your last little sentence doesn't mean a damn thing if technology is like shooting fish in a barrel.

You still have to find the fish . You still have to catch them . Just because the technology helps you see the fish , helps see the fish react , and may put more fish in the boat . It doesn’t make you keep more than you limits . I’ve seen enough shows on the internet and the different medias that show anglers even with ffs they still don’t catch every fish they see

I averaged 212 when I came back..was ridiculous…guys who would average 160 years ago average 220 now…it’s silly. I bowled until 2016 and quit forever. 800s were a real accomplishment years ago…now it’s normal and happens all the time.

but you use on a daily basis. Seems kinda double standard to me.

My rods and reels are way more than my boat, which has the highest in technology cut off milk jug. THAT is the most important technology on my boat. It determines whether you make it back or not. I have caught so many big fish, right in front of the “pro’s”, sometimes. Back to back 6 pounders, tons of 5’s, my son and I have caught some nice doubles but the 6/8 pounders were special. I bask in the glory of that old leaky boat, milk jug, no electronics and a $100 troll motor. I’ve got a maxwell house coffee can with an eye bolt in some cement for an anchor. Well, actually the can has rotted off now. Still works great, slips silently into the water.

The solution is to find investors who are willing to sponsor tournaments that are no electronics. It needs to be put online with quality video production. People will watch and the dollars will roll in. What we have now is easy money which never lasts. The product now is just garbage. There’s opportunity to reinvent the sport. We need big names to stand up and abandon the current product.

A hundred years ago, there were true craftsmen who made wagon wheels and buggy whips. Today they're all dead, and manufacturing plants crank out wheels, tires, and the cars that we all drive today. Things change. Those who change with the times will survive, and those that don't change don't have to, but the must accept that the world around them is in a constant state of change. Whenever I go to a bowling alley, the rental gear is the good, old fashioned hard plastic ball. I've thrown a few hammers and other weighted balls, and yes, they make a difference, but I'm not an avid enough bowler to consider buying one of them. When I go fishing, I have a 15 year old boat, but it gets me to where I want to go. Do I use FFS? Yes. I like the technology for what it helps me do... find fish. Catching them is still up to the angler. The technology helps me to make more productive casts. I don't sit over brush piles and jig for bass, I still enjoy casting, I just like casting to where the fish are much better. And for the record.... I'm older than you.

Bass fishing has not been taken over and dominated by electronic technology. It’s been taken over and dominated by money. Tournaments have long since become extended ads for products. When there is such a thing as a $100,000.00 Bass Boat, things are upside down.

Im not a professional bass fisherman and never once fished a tournament. I do have a bass boat with down scan and side scan, which i dont think helps me catch fish. you complain about new tech in sonar so let me ask you a question. Do you have a back up camera on your truck to help hook up your boat trailer? do you bow hunt? if so do you use a compound bow or a recurve? If you muzzleloader hunt do you use a flintlock or a in-line rifle? do you use open sights on your rifle or have you got a scope? Do you have power steering and air condition on your vehicle? Times change and so does progress. Instead of complaining about a 20 year old winning tournaments why dont you learn to use ff sonar and level the playing field?
