  • It's time to teardown the Windows 7 phone. With a punchy beat and careful disassembly, I'm going all the way into the Fujitsu F-07C. What kind of strange things will I find inside a phone that's like two devices jammed together in one. And what will happen when I get there? Come along for the ride, and hope that we can find our way out again.

    Damn two whole arquitectures packed together. That atom x86 cpu must get real hot when gaming!
    I love ARM, but the freedom and software x86 still offers is way beyond. Having both worlds in your pocket sounds amazing tbh.

    Loved the teardown montage, that must have taken ages to film and edit. Worth it IMO compared to teardowns that end up skipping steps.
    Thanks for being honest as well, and showing even experts can make mistakes from time to time.

      Thanks. If I have gained some expertise over time, then it's only because I made mistakes and learned from them. It's the failures that count. As much as they suck, you really do learn the most in those moments.

    Pritty sure the two Samsung chips are the ram and the Toshiba is the emmc. The chip after that I think is the phones flash storage.
    I also think you have the two Intel chips the wrong way too. The 2nd looks more likely to be the atom.

      Maybe one of those Samsung chips is a cpu with ram on top, idk if Samsung used their package on package (pop) methode... It's common on phones to have the cpu under and the ram on top with the markings so probably one of those Samsungs run the other os

    That was awesome, very thorough and to the point. Also, I feel like anyone who has one of these will appreciate your video for anything that needs to be repaired.
    Also, I personally would love a new spiritual successor of this device with an ARM64 that runs Windows 10/11 alongside Android.

    That phone is an engineering nightmare. Worse than a Janus card in an Amiga.
    Management: "We want two OSes in one phone"
    Engineer: "no problem"
    Management: "they're going to have different CPU architectures though, and can't share any resources like RAM or flash memory"
    Engineer: "..."
    Nowadays you'd just virtualize one of the OSes.

    Yes a white knuckle moment of any re assemble - the re power up sequence.. suggest taking photos with your phone of key cables and connections just prior to removing them, this way you can simply flick thru the images of key moments rather than having to watch the tear down video over and over looking for a certain frame.. worked for me on many machine rebuilds.

    Over the past couple of weeks I ended up watching this series out of order, not entirely of my own doing - UA-cam's recommended videos algorithm had a bit to do with it too. Ending this series with the teardown video feels like a good way of watching them though; kind of like watching Star Wars by episode number instead of production date. It ends with "Return of the Jedi" and inexplicably they never made any sequels. Ever.
    I found the internals to be fascinating and I thank you for taking the risk of showing them to us. One question not related to the internals; in the promo pics it looked like it had a sportier looking version of Windows 7, one that I don't think I've seen before. Am I crazy or just forgetful?

    • @JanusCycle
      @JanusCycle  Рік тому

      Despite creating these as two trilogies, I hoped they would work as independent videos. I'm glad that the way you found them on UA-cam gave you a good experience.
      This phone has a custom icon launcher for Windows 7 that I didn't go into much. I could have shown that more.
      I'm still debating with my friends the 'right' way to watch Star Wars :)

      @@mattdavis9601 The prequels do feel more like they come from a creator with a singular vision, compared to some of the modern committee based approaches.
      Though with complex characters and good stories, things like Rogue One and Andor are decent enough experiences.

      @@JanusCycle My second comment, the one that was a reply to your first reply to me, disappeared and I have no clue why. You obviously seen it because you replied to it. But, I don't understand why UA-cam took it down after you replied. It's not even showing in my UA-cam Comments History under My Activity. I have this happen every so often, although it's usually within a minute after posting it, and it's annoying. I don't think it's a length limit thing; because I've typed longer comments that stuck, and I didn't include any links nor any banned words that I'm aware of. It makes me look bad and I hate when it happens. I'm sorry.

    • @JanusCycle
      @JanusCycle  Рік тому

      No need to apologise for UA-cam's automatic failure system. I found your missing comment in my email notifications. I'm posting it here, so we can see what UA-cam 'decided to lose'.
      Matt Davis - "It turns out I missed one; the installing Linux video. I just finished watching it too, and to stretch the Star Wars metaphor as far as it can go, I'm going to consider it "Rogue One". It helps that I liked "Rogue One".
      A custom icon launcher for Windows isn't something I would've guessed. I would be surprised if anyone who owned one of these when they were new ever actually used that feature. It looks cool in the ads though.
      I think the originals are the best. The Prequel Trilogy was a thing when I was a tween so I have some fond nostalgia for it. Looking at it at adult eyes; it's got some clunky dialogue at times and more boring meetings than work, but the world building was great. They're honest and it feels like Lucas cared about the characters and how everything interacted. I like them. I'm not a fan of the Sequel trilogy because it took everything that happened in the OT, all the triumphs and sacrifices, and threw it away. It basically said our heroes failed and everything was for nothing. I like the "A Star Wars Story" type movies and the shows are fine to great. So, I'm not a complete curmudgeon yelling at Disney to get off my lawn."

      The Symbian side actually uses Symbian Kernel but it's not the Nokia S60. You can't build any apps or connect debugger or boot into firmware upgrade mode or anything like that. Maybe there were some Chinese hackers doing that for SIM unlocking, but never even heard how they'd do it.

    So instead of making a phone that can run Windows 7 they crammed an X86 PC inside an ARM based Symbian phone and the two computers barely share any hardware outside of the absolutely necessary, such a weird approach.

    • @JanusCycle

      You had to have a carrier-branded phone back in this era in Japan, basically same as you have to have an iPhone these days with access to App Store and iMessage, but each carriers had their own "iPhone". The actual iPhone weren't allowed into those carrier offered services so they were bit of a half a phone that needs a backup. The phone side of this phone is exactly that carrier phone to solve that problem.

    • @axelprino
      @axelprino Рік тому +1

      @@user-cr4sc1ht9t I'm aware of how fascinatingly weird yet technologically advanced when compared to the rest of the world Japanese phones where during the 2000's and early 2010's, the whole galapagization phenomena which is partially responsible for a bunch of mobile games becoming lost media, but this phone in particular seems to really be pushing what can be considered marketable. So knowing that carriers quite simply mandated phones to be a certain way does help make this technological oddity make a bit more sense, thanks for the info.
      As an aside you don't really need an iPhone in many countries, where I live they make up a tiny percentage of the smartphones out there with Android dominating by a huge margin, and before Android became the standard Nokia (when they were still using s60 Symbian) was the one ruling the market to the point that back when Windows mobile was still a thing it had a larger percentage of users than IOS. I've never owned nor had interest in owning a product made by Apple in my whole life.
