  • How to open the fireplace damper.
Be sure to do this before lighting a fire so the smoke goes out through the chimney.
Keep it shut, when you don't have a fire.

Back in the day, my grandparents were young parents, moved into a tiny hut with their baby and a couple other relatives, and on one of the first few nights decided to light a fire to stay warm. Someone didn't have the knowledge or overlooked opening the hatch in the fireplace, they lit the fire and went to sleep. My grandma woke up front disturbed rest, realized that there wasn't enough air and something was wrong, and woke everyone up and evacuated the family safely. Had they slept through the night, they would have most likely suffocated from carbon monoxide poisoning.
It's crazy how something so small can make or break being alive, but there you have it.
Thank you, for teaching (younger) people this crucial life lesson.

Thank you for the view of the damper in action - we have this style! I'm too afraid to stick my head in my fireplace. We began having rodent problems in the garage, and I was afraid they'd come down the chimney, but this looks very secure. I'm planning to get a chimney cap this weekend.
