Whenever I can't find a place to sleep I head to the nearest farm or ranch....I've never been turned away and usually get a great farm meal as a bonus. Most get insulted if you offer money but sometimes I offer a couple of hours labor. Don't often get taken up on it though.

do you mean that you ask if you can camp on their land, or stay with them? i assume the first

Great video Tim. When I was a senior in High School in Toronto in 1985, our geography class (12 students) and a teacher went down to Mammoth Caves in a small bus and it was one of the most memorable trips from high school. Now that I have kids, we went down again from Toronto where I live some years back so I could show my kids the park and cave it was a lot of fun. Keep up the great videos.

Hi from NZ Tim. Feed-back is the breakfast of champions and I am inspired by a nice relaxed episode and enchanted by the last waterfall and rock walks. I think you did it justice to be honest. Your choice of music complimented the mood of the episode nicely. The richness of the green country side was easy viewing. I have an African Twin and our windscreens are almost identical. My chin cam looks through it as does yours. May I suggest if you don't already know, I carry in my tankbag a small round soft plastic container with lid containing a moist chamio cloth which is perfect for keeping clean my visor mirrors and especially because like you I film a lot, my windscreen. Thanks for a most pleasant moment in time shared with you.

East coast traveling trick. Forward the end of the day, if you're passing a farm find the farmer and ask if he has a field off the road you can spend the night. Let him know you won't be making a fire and will be leaving quickly in the morning. I'd say early, but early to a framer..... You'll find many accommodating people and some will even have you in for breakfast. KTSU

Awe Tim! I wish I had known..... I don't live too far from there and it's quite possibly the lamest of national parks. Ohio has so much more to offer. Hocking Hills and Salt Fork state park areas are truly awesome. Much less commercialized areas and more outdoorsy and larger.

Just a heads up. If you have the National Parks pass “America the Beautiful” it’ll get you in to all the parks and my experience is they’ll often let you put a tent up. I’ve just said “hey sometimes I get a discount for this.” Camped for free at the Badlands, Land Between the Lakes, and a few more that escape me at the moment. Didn’t work at Yellowstone but did at Grand Teton.

East of the Mississippi 'camping' grounds are usually asphalt pads for RVs. Actual wild camping grounds are few and far between, the vast majority of the land is privately owned, and there is very few federal parks like out west. I gave up trying to camp in the midwest.

Hey Tim. If you happen to find yourself in Western Iowa this spring/summer, I'd love to ride with you on some decent roads in the Loess Hills area. Northwest Missouri on up into Northwest Iowa - it's no national park, but some great state parks along the route. I'd even buy you lunch. I'd be psyched to meet you if you ever come this direction. Give me a shout and I can message you my info if you're in the area. Seriously. Love the channel, love what you're doing! Keep posting man.

I recognized the shot driving north on Rt 49 towards the State Beach. We have a lake house about half a mile west. While not the spectacular purples, pinks, and oranges you sometimes get, it looks like your sunset footage around the 5:00 mark were either directly over the Chicago skyline or very closely to the south. On a clear day, its very noticeable over the 35 miles of water.

Interestingly....speaking of the relative lack of ornate formations in the actual Mammoth cave system..Diamond Caverns, a privately owned tour cave that is just outside the MCNP entrance is absolutely loaded with beautiful and diverse formations. If you ever go back, try to go there and see it.
The best tour of MCNP imo..is the Historic Tour. It goes through some huge areas that give you a real sense of why it is called Mammoth Cave.

7:22 - you said you didn't know, but you were in Indiana. The sign said Plainville; I know where that is. But Mammoth Cave National Park... you're right in my back yard. Without getting into details, there's a portion of that underground river called Lost River. I live on top of that. It has its own little cave system called... wait for it... Lost River Cave. Who would've thunk it! You got the Mammoth Cave tour, but at the same time, you missed a bunch of good stuff. If you would have taken your southern route towards the Smokey Mountains, you could have hit the Cumberland Falls in Kentucky. You were so close to so much, but I understand it when "time" is a thing. Good video.

I rode to Mammoth last summer and really enjoyed the trip. Glad you found the place. I’m curious, how many miles a day do you typically travel? I’m relatively new to touring and am trying to get a handle on what different mileages/hours works for most people. Also, was that Google maps you used? I struggle (tedious and time consuming) so much looking for small roads to take that I wonder if I am over thinking the routes. Enjoyed the video, as always!

I've had some interesting 'accommodations' before when on a ride. State parks have been a real gift. at about $16 a campsite a night. Montana screws you over thinking their State Parks are worth $30 a night. I have used abandoned weigh stations before, a random ditch just west of the Wisconsin Dells, and in Georgia while late at night a church parking lot. Never had an issue before, and I always act respectful so I don't expect that to change.

Think your are like me in a way, I'm in get it done mode, whereas my spirit tells me to go to "let it be" mode just take life as it comes, but I like to know what I'm doing business wise.
I do think once I get back on the road in a year or two maybe I'll switch to let it be mode.😁 or at least find a balance.
Sometimes people get too busy counting and identifying the trees to take time to enjoy the forest.
Years ago, I used to camp on church property, some let you and some don't worst they can tell you is no.
On your helmet if you put a strip of tape, I recommend gaffer tape it doesn't leave a residue across the top of your face shield it cuts the glare down just like those strips on car windshields you can just dip your head down a bit and you can see😎

There are different tours available at Mammoth Cave. The cave is over 7 miles long and the long tour through most of it takes all day. The interesting part with all the formations is at the end where you were. The rest is just a rock pile. You apparently took one of the short tours which was a better choice unless you just like a lot of hiking.
