    At the Single House, the columns on the first floor piazza may be as old as the house. They also need a lot of work. Kevin visits the millwork shop in North Charleston where the columns are restored.
    The homeowners have settled on a design for the iron gate for their driveway.
    Tommy meets with a student who designed the gate and watches the beginning of its construction. Students Joe Whisonant and Kaelyn Robinson are learning the old-world craft of blacksmithing at the American College of the Building Arts. Kevin sits down with both of them to learn why they chose to go into that trade.
    It's time to select some finishes for the Single House. Kevin joins homeowner Kathleen and lighting designer Ali Sherrill as they discuss lighting fixtures and ceiling fans.
    Across town, much of the siding on the Elliotborough house has taken a beating and has to be removed and replaced with matching new siding that's pressure-treated and primed. Tommy shows how to salvage the good original siding so it can later be weaved in with the new siding.

    i don't know if this smith is strictly a student or getting paid or what but to think a reg company or person manufacturing that gate, if the time frames were similar for the build it would be about 10 grand for that gate. 2 months to build at 8 hours a day and a wage of 15 an hour, tack on the iron cost, design fee and profit . Yikes

    I worked at Colonial Williamsburg, VA in the crafts department back in the 1980s. There was a female blacksmith there at the time. Her name was Kelly as I recall. There was historical evidence to support having a woman blacksmith and its good to see that at least one more woman has taken up the trade.

    Filler instead of Bondo

    • @buckhorncortez
      @buckhorncortez 3 роки тому

      Bondo is a polyester resin. They were using epoxy resin with colloidal silica and either micro-balloons or wood flour to thicken it to filler consistency. They used colloidal silica in the bonding epoxy because it was white and epoxy is clear. You use the silica because it thickens the epoxy so it doesn't penetrate the wood as far preventing the joint from being glue-starved, and it will also make the final joint stronger. Nice try at looking like you know what you're talking about...

    You don’t have to heat up the iron to make those motifs; unskilled blacksmiths in India, makes templates for them and use a twist rod to make them in a couple hours for the whole gate. That 5X6’ gate takes them probably a week to build.

    • @updatemysettings5095

      lol, nothing in India is built to last more than 10 years, thats why they can use thin chinese steel and bend it in India for a gate. The US blacksmiths have more experience working with quality materials
