Small arms solutions has a great episode of the history of the 416, 516, and 816. All 3 rifles were designed by the same two engineers, if my memory is right
for the 416 it was just from the HK engineer. Chris Sirois with him in the rest.

I've owned a 516 Patrol since gen 1 back in 2010 and it's the ONLY gun I'll never get rid of. I sold my AK because the 516 is my apocalypse rifle. It's literally perfect.
If there is a downside, it's that it's a heavy AR. I love the hell out of it, but it's a heavy 5.56 boy for sure.
Me and my brother each have Sig 516 Patrol and they are great rifles - reliable and accurate! They were the last two imported in our country and a lot of people are asking to buy them but they are not for sale!

I can’t recommend enough the Midwest Industries Mlok handguard they make for the Sig 516. Super easy to install and made the upper so much lighter.
You have my 816 which I love, but the 516 quad is a VIBE

I just took my Sig 716 Patrol out to shoot yesterday. Its the .308 version of the 516 you have in this video. Great AR10 type rifle.

I love mine, the thing is built like a tank! It is my go if needed.
Been using my 516 for a little over a year and a half, eats like a champ, gets searing hot, and I myself changed the entire bolt carrier group for an LWRC piston one since it's slicker and looks nicer, and it just powers through anything I throw at it. It's built like a tank, and you can find their uppers here and there, just recently there was a department trade in of the 11" barreled ones, moderately used, they're pretty cheap and despite having a few thousand rounds put through them, they refuse to quit. Brick shithouse uppers with the only downside being their weight. Love mine to death.

Just picked up a new in box 516 gen 2 fde. Its a sweet rifle. However, no bayo lug and the rail does not wrap around the side of the gas block
Love the 516 uppers, but man do they got hot. It becomes real clear why all the full auto fire demos Sig did when it first came out ran the old broom handle. The m27 home gets spicy quick.

I have one from the first version that I have shot only a few times and it has performed up to expectations. There are a few countries that use the 516 such as Mexico: Transitioning into the general service rifle of the Naval Infantry Force. Peru: SIG516 and SIG716 variants used by Subunidad de Acciones Tácticas of Peruvian Police. Switzerland: Used by the Mobilen Einsatzpolizei of the Aargau Police. Ukraine: Used by the SBU and GUR. As you can see, this rifle is still well received based on it's reliability and endurance.

My 516 Patrol is awesome. It is heavy, but I love the quad rail and piston. I HATE MLOK. I have two rifles with "modern" rails and I can't stand that mounting system. I'm in my mid 50s, weak, fat, and out of shape and I won't give up my quad rail for a lighter gun lol. Great accuracy, never had a single malfunction with any ammo, and it loves 77gr stuff for longer range (300 or less, being honest). I'll never get rid of it.

Last time I checked (its been a few years) the 516 was completely out of production and even spare parts were extremely difficult to find. Its a nice gun, for your _forgotten_ _weapons_ style collection.
Picking at the edges of my memory, so forgive any mistakes, but iirc:
LWRC sued Sig over the 516, and a settlement was reached. Sig stopped civilian sales and started pushing the mcx more. PDs can still order 516s, and any new uppers/parts being sold are contract overruns

IIRC, the BCG in the 516 is about identical to LWRC’s design. Hence why if you ever need a new BCG, just get one from LWRC.

You said the upper is the same spec as an AR-15, but I assumed the rail was HK 416 height rather than AR-15 height. I believe the MCXs are also higher to accommodate the op-rod.

Your gun might have a plunger in the barrel extension to support the extractor

Sig did use slightly different gas blocks on the 516 that had different markings, positions, etc.

UTG Leapers has a great 30mm cantilever mount for ~$40.
I put the POF roller on all 4 of mine. I got Caracal Sig uppers direct from sig for a song. Freakin best upper ever. I fired it side by side with a 416 and a LWRC. Cant say anything was better than my sig uppers. Liked the LWRC for weight but sig was a little more robust and liked more types of ammo. Hate sig for selling it out to caracal!
Sig still offers the 516g2 in their LE/Mil catalog, and 1 or 2 of the 516 designers worked on the Caracal 816. What makes you think Sig & Caracal had/have any business arrangement with the 516? Enlighten me!

Lmao I got mine for $900
I had a 516 and only gave it up because for one they stopped manufacturing it so huge issue there .. but also I hated the hand guard - horrible. I did all the research from watching the video of the guy doing the over the beach sand mud tests and all to understanding the short stroke pushrod system. If they would have continued making it I would have just upgraded to the newest generation.

Sig still makes the 516, it's offered in their 2023-24 LE/Mil catalog.
