    TOOLS LIST:
    kit.co/iliketo...
I used some scraps of hardwood that I've been hanging onto for years. Maple for the front and oak for the sides and back.
The edges were rough, so I cleaned off one edge of each piece on the table saw.
Using that clean edge against the fence, I cut the opposite edge to be parallel.
I used a crosscut sled to cut them to length. This ensures that these cuts are perpendicular to the previous cuts.
Then I ripped them all down to the final width.
I lined up the pieces in the configuration that I wanted and marked numbers on them so I didn't forget their placement later.
I put my dado stack on the saw to make a1/4" cut. Then setup my box joint jig to match the blade size. I cut box joints on the end of all four pieces.
This takes time to setup precisely but the end result is totally worth it.
I did a dry fit of the box once all of the fingers were cut.
I put a slot cutting bit (the one I used on my arcade) in my router, to create a slot for the aluminum top plate.
I cut the slot into each piece being careful NOT to cut into the fingers, just the main section of the board.
I cut down a thin aluminum kick plate to size. This material will be used for the top and bottom.
The aluminum was thin enough to slide under my fence, so I clamped on a piece of wood that sat completely flush with the table saw surface. Then I cut the piece to it's final width.
Before assembly, I sanded the inside of the box pieces, since I wouldn't have access to them again.
I added glue to one end piece and the two long pieces before knocking them together with a mallet.
I slide the aluminum down into the three slots.
I knocked on the final end piece, making sure to adjust the aluminum plate as I went, keeping it in all four slots.
I clamped up the box to hold everything in position while it dried. I didn't add a lot of pressure here, just enough to keep everything in place.
After it was dry, I used the disc sander to shave off the extra length of the fingers and make them flush.
The disc sander has a rough grit paper, and it's very powerful, so it leaves the surface pretty rough.
I used a belt sander and orbital sander to get all of the surfaces very smooth.
I set the table saw fence to 2" and ran all four sides of the box through the same, cutting it into two pieces. This is tricky and feels dangerous when you do it. Please be careful.
I lined up two off cuts from earlier and marked both pieces for cutting biscuit slots.
I used a biscuit jointer to cut the slots, then added glue and biscuits.
I clamped these, very tightly, to dry.

I almost didn't watch this video since I don't own any pedals or guitars, but decided to watch it anyways because I figured what the heck lets see how Bob builds a pedal board. I'm glad I did watch it I learned about the take down hinges which are really cool I had never seen that before. Thanks.

  • @MauriceBlok

Hi Bob, when cutting the box in half, releasing the lid, you could add shims which have the same size as the blade in the cut slots with clamps before proceeding the two remaining cuts. This would prevents anything nasty from happening.

3M makes a really cool "velcro" for hanging pictures, part of their damage free hanging solutions. They are VERY strong (I used several to mount a portable fan to the inside of a bus and they've held up great). Might be a good solution for mounting pedals without damaging the board.

Great video! I don't have any pedals or need for a board but I know someone who is a fantastic drummer and I think an even better guitar player but he doesn't play guitar in any performances. He started shopping around for a pedal board but didn't find any that he liked and those he did like were too expensive so he made his own board. Other musicians started asking him where he found the board and asked him to build one for them and he found his second calling. He makes custom pedals and they are beautiful!
He named them Relic because I think they're a real relic. Thanks for a great video I've subscribed a while back and really enjoy your videos.

Great project. I love that you used metal on the top and bottom because it looks great and saves some space and weight. I found a cardboard box that is similar in size to what I am trying to do and am using that as a place to template and plan for the project. It gives me a 3D perspective without a bunch of mock ups etc. 👍🏼

Great video! For what it's worth, you can swap out the backer MDF board on that Incra jig (or slide it side to side or flip it) to support the wood fibers so you don't get that tear-out.

I know that feeling too, when you finish making the box and have to cut it into 2 pieces. My teacher literally almost cut my box incorrectly on the tables saw, and because the work shop doesn't have a box joint jig I needed to spend 2 hours ( 2 lessons) making them and the sanding had taken me another lesson to finish, luckily it all turned out alright. :) :)

Another Great Video Bob! One tip i would have is to cut the box in half is to use a band saw with a piece of angle iron as a rip fence. this is better than a table saw because there is less chance of the box being wrecked or thrown across the room. as long as you get the measurements correct, the band saw with rip fence will work better than a table saw. Like i said, a Great video tho!!

This came out really great Bob! Also you can buy pedal mounts like the bike chain idea without taking apart a bike chain. Many years ago I bought some on eBay that had the little figure 8 metal bit plus a screw and a rubber grommet. They were pretty cool. I don't think it's the same people but now I saw some on eBay as "Pedal Links". Thanks for sharing! Love how this came out.

    Hi Bob,
I've been checking out your channel for quite awhile now and I find your work amazing. It's just mind-blowing the stuff you can make and I find extremely inspiring :)
I'd like to make stuff by myself as well, but unfortunately I'm broke, (like, really broke) and can't afford to have tablesaws, belt-sanders and all those big and (I'm assuming) expensive tools you use.
I was wondering if you could do a video where you'd make something using only the most basic tools that would be easily available to anyone (Hammers, screwdrivers, and other small-dollar items, that sort of stuff), without the need for any large, expensive tool/machinery ?
It would be amazing if you could :) Thanks in advance, and keep up the good work !

Hey Bob. I really like your channel. I always watch your videos.I have a suggestion for one, have you consider building an e-bike? or turning an old bike into an e-bike. It could be awesome to watch it. :)
