It a situational awareness by taking a throw vs his most optimal combo if you are aware that the block string is safe and leaves you open for his counter or whiff punishment then you are not losing much by taking a throw to see his habits in the first rounds
once he hit the corner, all he could do was mitigate damage. block = plus blanka with OD chan inside you. if he parried ball, blanka chan is still inside you. if he went for a tech, he died. it was OD flash or nothing, and if that got blocked, he died. having a plus on block, airborne answer that activates a bouncing mine that straight up beats multiple options is nuts. Ryu gets a knockdown, is it a shimmy? no ok, back to the game.

I think the downplaying comes from players looking at a character in a vacuum. The characters tech may not be adequately discovered, and/ or its because the players mistakenly view their own short comings as the characters problem, and not their's as a player. We can look back to similar case with SSF4 Seth. Character had everything, amazing buttons, damage, setups, but poor health and stun. Top players all around the world had him listed as a low tier character and it took until AE till people started noticing when Poongko put him on at Evo.

I think he'd get nerfed anyway. Even if no one complained, they'd nerf a character if people used them too much. I do agree though, if a character is too strong that you should play them. Downplaying is important for them because it helps these people win actual money, but on a lower end it feels like it undermines the work they put in to winning by claiming their character is cheap and insinuating they're carried. It's either a personal gain thing, a pride thing, or both.
I’m a deejay master and he’s strong af, I play him because he’s my favourite character in the game, if he was weaker I’d still play him and still be master, I’ve never downplayed him because why should I care if my character is strong,it’s a good thing! Once akuma drops that’s my main, if he’s cheap, op etc etc I don’t give af as long as he’s fun because sf is a game😂

For example, when you're charging left or down, in prior street fighter games you could keep holding the charge and then tap right or up to do the special move WITHOUT letting go of the charge left/down [down back]. This seems to have been removed in sf 6?? [makes playing guile feel less safe]
Think about the jp Honda matchup before the nerf. Slam doesn't work against the invincible 2hp, amnesia beats everything honda has and honda has no way to move in. As broken as blanka is, it's quiet compared to others until clips like this come out.

Kimberly has extremely good mixups with that don't even need meter? Blanka also has meterless mixups and is insanely mobile with his slide, hop, and different rolling attacks. Kimberly does have a stronger corner carry, so you got one right. Kimberly’s not bad, but her game plan is much weaker than Blanka’s when she’s also supposed to be an aggressive setup based character.
Notice how none of those downplayers starting playing in sf5? 😂 I've been dealing with Ken players in my scene claiming ken isn't top 8. They feel this way because the top Ken players are downplaying like a bunch of clowns. It's okay to admit your character is top 3. That's fine. It doesn't mean you're carried. I think it just shows they aren't comfortable with themselves because they're terrified they'll be called a fraud if their character is good.
Ken isn't top 3 because JP, Guile, Luke, Blanka and Deejay all exist. Hell, Luke and Deejay literally do the exact same thing as Ken, with the exact same playstyle, but do everything better. Ken might be top 10 (questionable after his nerfs and other characters buffs), but not top 5, and no chance in hell he is top 3 lol.
Even though that setup was cheap (hilarious at the same time) but it was done to a guile player and seeing guiles get wrecked is something I enjoy seeing.
Blanka is dumb in this game. You can't even throw fireballs against him, cause of his slide. You can't properly anti-air him, because he has multiple ways to change his jump arc and bait you. You can't jump at him, because he has a 1 button anti-air that leads to a 35-50%ish drive rush combo. You can't even properly pressure him because he has a reversal, a level 1 super, and air blanka ball, on top of DI and parries. Then on top of this he has multiple plus frame normals and his insane level 2 that basically is a Yun super, once he's activated you can't really do much other than maybe alpha counter, that's really about it. Once he gets that chain air blanka ball going, it's all plus frames, you again can't do anything outside of alpha counter or a yolo reversal in between the plus frame Blanka balls, and if you aren't on point, you'll just get counter hit. Copying this comment from the Machoor video, I forgot to mention his jump grab and his Blanka doll. Obviously the game is designed around a lot of "you have to hold this" situations(burnout in the corner with no meter for example) but it does feel like Blanka forces you to "hold dat" more than basically any other character I can think of, other than Rashid and his level 2 maybe. Eventually other characters pressure ends, with Blanka it's like it never ends - especially in the corner with the doll.
Corrections : blanka has ranges where he can’t react slide so fire ball is very much safe there and not impossible to use he only can change his jump arc if he’s doing a jump from coward crouch which you can see very clearly making u not have to second guess any normal jumps like a normal dive kick character, he has a single plus frame normal not multiple that you need to be very close to use, plenty of characters have reversals lol this doesn’t mean he escapes pressure free and how is lvl 2 like yun super it isn’t a custom combo, u can guess right against lvl 2 mix and stop it (dp or hit him out of landing after trying to bait) I’m not even saying he’s not strong this stuff is strong but your literally lying to make the character seem stronger than they actually are
Blanka has to make risks in order to implement his strategy and amongst the characters type "mixups" he is the most honest. Look at Kimberly for example. Her only design is to trick you her very fast walk speed and her special moves overhead / low that you can't even see while OD, she is supposed to not let you think throwing at you everything at once. Because she wants to play one single player. And Rashid which you throw the lvl2 whee Rashid feels safe enough to do whatever he wants also building meter during his lvl2 unlike Blanka where he may waste his lvl2 for nothing. And talking about his lvl2 and the drive gauge. What about Marisa gladius a normal special move that take so much drive gauge and if you are in burnout it does take a bunch a cheep damage? And by the way most of the cast can 2 touches kill. It's the whole mecanism to question.
DJ doesn't belong in that tier. people been "upplaying" him ever since they got DR swayed the first time. DJ's kit has a lot of weaknesses (unlike the others on your shortlist), and DR and sway (and his damage) aren't good enough to completely carry him to god tier.
The most effective strategy in any sport is not to let your opponent play. that guile in that round didnt get to play so that means blanka breaks something in the game that people are def downplaying. He cud very well be the best if not the 2nd best character in the game because of what he can when executed well. Execution is a barrier, the reason everyone is not playing blanka is mainly because he is not as easy as luke to pick up.

One thing to note that a lot of people in the FGC forget is how easy it is to incorporate high level setplay with a character nowadays. All the tech is available either on YT or Twitter. It's become easier to downplay precisely because it's so easy to find out what you got hit by online.
Why do we see so many, guiler, luck, jp, ken and we don't see so many blanka? The answer is very easy, a character can be somewhat cheap, but it does not mean that all professional players have the ability to exploit the character to the maximum, In this case, Menard combines his talent and ability to the maximum with Blanka.
they don't call their character cheap because they don't want the giga nerf. Mena don't usually pick characters because how strong they are. he usually picks weird characters like birdie and blanka are not popular characters. then he asked for Elena for season 2. Luke is as close as to normal you will get to a normal character but he has tumors in his forearms and the guy wears no shoes in normal street gear

You gotta feel comfortable losing and stop treating a fighting game like a solvable puzzle with one single clearcut obvious solution to every situation. This is not the type of thing where the person who studied the most gets the best grade on the test. Matchup knowledge only goes far when your opponent never does what you expect them to.
I'm not saying anything is cheap or downplaying anything And I'm trying to learn, But wouldn't the best case scenario here be to Parry? As the only thing that could hit you would be grab right? That would decrease the amount of mix-ups he's able to hit you with. Not only that, if he grab you then that means he didn't activate the doll that's on the floor, right? So now you have a better chance and just more chances in general to survive the whole mix-up game and match.
Given the situation, you wouldn't want to get PC throw and still have to deal with blanka with super2 with a doll on the floor, either way you gonna guess.
he has to guess right twice to get out of that situation. that's just a consequence of the bad decision at the start of the round. however, when blanka gets ahead he is very cheap since most character can't create a sequence like this

The point is not hypocrite people are calling out Blanka cheapness, not the players who are able to use him at 100%. I mean,Mena is so good that he can destroy 90% of the SF6 playerbase using Eternity the Announcer with a hand tied on his back, y'all don't even need to call him out in this conversation. We already seen characters able to do similar things in previous games, heck, I would've even understand if it was Marisa doing that, but Blanka? He always been a tricky character, but giving him also the damage it's like giving guns to kids. If Blanka actual 'abilities' remain the same, I can see Capcom doing an emergency patch this Fall already.
I wonder if the re-worked Drive Reversal would help in this situation? Usable on wake up, fully invulnerable, but only -6 if you guess wrong. Punishable but, generally speaking, not max damage punishable. Not gonna lie, with the game as it is now, I probably OD Flash Kick in this situation, would have worked this time but I wouldn't suggest it necessarily. Even if it connects, because Blanka is doing OD air ball in level 2 and there's a doll at my feet, I'm not actually sure I don't get punished by the doll and potentially combo converted by Blanka anyway and put right back into another mix...assuming I live that is.

Ken just got a triple nerf in the last balance patch... If you are still losing to Ken (the character, not just someone who is a better player than you), you suck ass lol. Dragonlash loses to everything (parry, DI, anti-air, even just jabs), Jinrai "mixups" were never real in the first place and every Jinrai option loses to delayed jab, his normals are below average and he has to choose between corner carry and damage, which none the top tier characters have to do.

I've been dealing with Ken players in my scene claiming ken isn't top 8. They feel this way because the top Ken players are downplaying like a bunch of clowns.
It's okay to admit your character is top 3. That's fine. It doesn't mean you're carried.
I think it just shows they aren't comfortable with themselves because they're terrified they'll be called a fraud if their character is good.
Ken isn't top 3 because JP, Guile, Luke, Blanka and Deejay all exist. Hell, Luke and Deejay literally do the exact same thing as Ken, with the exact same playstyle, but do everything better. Ken might be top 10 (questionable after his nerfs and other characters buffs), but not top 5, and no chance in hell he is top 3 lol.

Even though that setup was cheap (hilarious at the same time) but it was done to a guile player and seeing guiles get wrecked is something I enjoy seeing.
Blanka is dumb in this game. You can't even throw fireballs against him, cause of his slide. You can't properly anti-air him, because he has multiple ways to change his jump arc and bait you. You can't jump at him, because he has a 1 button anti-air that leads to a 35-50%ish drive rush combo. You can't even properly pressure him because he has a reversal, a level 1 super, and air blanka ball, on top of DI and parries. Then on top of this he has multiple plus frame normals and his insane level 2 that basically is a Yun super, once he's activated you can't really do much other than maybe alpha counter, that's really about it. Once he gets that chain air blanka ball going, it's all plus frames, you again can't do anything outside of alpha counter or a yolo reversal in between the plus frame Blanka balls, and if you aren't on point, you'll just get counter hit.
Copying this comment from the Machoor video, I forgot to mention his jump grab and his Blanka doll. Obviously the game is designed around a lot of "you have to hold this" situations(burnout in the corner with no meter for example) but it does feel like Blanka forces you to "hold dat" more than basically any other character I can think of, other than Rashid and his level 2 maybe. Eventually other characters pressure ends, with Blanka it's like it never ends - especially in the corner with the doll.

Corrections : blanka has ranges where he can’t react slide so fire ball is very much safe there and not impossible to use he only can change his jump arc if he’s doing a jump from coward crouch which you can see very clearly making u not have to second guess any normal jumps like a normal dive kick character, he has a single plus frame normal not multiple that you need to be very close to use, plenty of characters have reversals lol this doesn’t mean he escapes pressure free and how is lvl 2 like yun super it isn’t a custom combo, u can guess right against lvl 2 mix and stop it (dp or hit him out of landing after trying to bait) I’m not even saying he’s not strong this stuff is strong but your literally lying to make the character seem stronger than they actually are

Blanka has to make risks in order to implement his strategy and amongst the characters type "mixups" he is the most honest. Look at Kimberly for example. Her only design is to trick you her very fast walk speed and her special moves overhead / low that you can't even see while OD, she is supposed to not let you think throwing at you everything at once. Because she wants to play one single player. And Rashid which you throw the lvl2 whee Rashid feels safe enough to do whatever he wants also building meter during his lvl2 unlike Blanka where he may waste his lvl2 for nothing. And talking about his lvl2 and the drive gauge. What about Marisa gladius a normal special move that take so much drive gauge and if you are in burnout it does take a bunch a cheep damage? And by the way most of the cast can 2 touches kill. It's the whole mecanism to question.

DJ doesn't belong in that tier. people been "upplaying" him ever since they got DR swayed the first time. DJ's kit has a lot of weaknesses (unlike the others on your shortlist), and DR and sway (and his damage) aren't good enough to completely carry him to god tier.

The most effective strategy in any sport is not to let your opponent play. that guile in that round didnt get to play so that means blanka breaks something in the game that people are def downplaying. He cud very well be the best if not the 2nd best character in the game because of what he can when executed well. Execution is a barrier, the reason everyone is not playing blanka is mainly because he is not as easy as luke to pick up.

One thing to note that a lot of people in the FGC forget is how easy it is to incorporate high level setplay with a character nowadays. All the tech is available either on YT or Twitter. It's become easier to downplay precisely because it's so easy to find out what you got hit by online.

Mena don't usually pick characters because how strong they are. he usually picks weird characters like birdie and blanka are not popular characters. then he asked for Elena for season 2. Luke is as close as to normal you will get to a normal character but he has tumors in his forearms and the guy wears no shoes in normal street gear

As the only thing that could hit you would be grab right? That would decrease the amount of mix-ups he's able to hit you with. Not only that, if he grab you then that means he didn't activate the doll that's on the floor, right? So now you have a better chance and just more chances in general to survive the whole mix-up game and match.
Given the situation, you wouldn't want to get PC throw and still have to deal with blanka with super2 with a doll on the floor, either way you gonna guess.

he has to guess right twice to get out of that situation. that's just a consequence of the bad decision at the start of the round. however, when blanka gets ahead he is very cheap since most character can't create a sequence like this

The point is not hypocrite people are calling out Blanka cheapness, not the players who are able to use him at 100%. I mean,Mena is so good that he can destroy 90% of the SF6 playerbase using Eternity the Announcer with a hand tied on his back, y'all don't even need to call him out in this conversation. We already seen characters able to do similar things in previous games, heck, I would've even understand if it was Marisa doing that, but Blanka? He always been a tricky character, but giving him also the damage it's like giving guns to kids. Whoever is trying to downplaying this BS (and it's not the only example,we saw what happened to Punk at RBK) does that because they aren't on the receiving end. If Blanka actual 'abilities' remain the same, I can see Capcom doing an emergency patch this Fall already.

Usable on wake up, fully invulnerable, but only -6 if you guess wrong. Punishable but, generally speaking, not max damage punishable. Not gonna lie, with the game as it is now, I probably OD Flash Kick in this situation, would have worked this time but I wouldn't suggest it necessarily. Even if it connects, because Blanka is doing OD air ball in level 2 and there's a doll at my feet, I'm not actually sure I don't get punished by the doll and potentially combo converted by Blanka anyway and put right back into another mix...assuming I live that is.

Ken just got a triple nerf in the last balance patch... If you are still losing to Ken (the character, not just someone who is a better player than you), you suck ass lol. Dragonlash loses to everything (parry, DI, anti-air, even just jabs), Jinrai "mixups" were never real in the first place and every Jinrai option loses to delayed jab, his normals are below average and he has to choose between corner carry and damage, which none the top tier characters have to do.
I don’t mind getting beat by a CLASSIC player based on if I guess wrong but these (Modern) players get on my nerves thinking that they did something tapping one button supers and special moves spamming it all day. Those high ranks is a fluke to me. I said what I said
