Neat approach to re-attaching the rover, I like the simplicity. I usually go for putting a small mono-propellant engine on the underside of my rovers, so they can just jet themselves back up to the cargo bay. A double docking port on top helps to make sure the alignment is correct (so the wheels don't clip through the cargo bay once it's closed). Also makes for huge fun doing rover parkour around craters - jump off steep ridges and cliffs, use jets to kill velocity as you're approaching the ground so the wheels don't pop/explode. Good times.
"don't trust bill" Don't worry, he's just writing his book: The Odyssey by Bill. He will not use up all of your fuel to get to Eeloo, Jool, Minmus, Duna, Gilly, and back, I promise.
