Maserati Quattroporte | Long Term Owners Review | Pros and Cons, Economy, Servicing, Reliability

  • The M139 shape Maserati Quattroporte is a tantalising prospect for a truly affordable exotic car on the used market - especially if you are looking for one with far more space, seats and practicality than your average GT car. Not to mention a truly wonderful blend of sound and performance thanks to their Ferrari-shared F136 series engines.
At the same time however, the vast majority of prospective buyers are seemingly terrified at the thought of Maserati ownership due to their reputation when it comes to build quality and reliability, some of which is vastly blown out of proportion, and parts of which have seeds of truth. So from my perspective as a three time Quattroporte owner at this point - what keeps me coming back to these trident-bearing super limos, and what essentials do you need to keep in mind about buying and living with one? Let's discuss in my long term review of the Maserati Quattroporte.

This is probably the first, 100% accurate review of this era of Maseratis, that I've seen.
I'd include the Granturismo, because they are similar cars. With the exception of the number of doors.

    Very Well done and informative.
If you've seen the bulk of the videos on
the Quattroporte, you get the impression,
the owners work at Burger King and
get mad when they have to pay for an
    oil change.
Thanks for no midroll ads, that's class, I
let all other ads run, no one lets midrolls run.
And thanks for including us in the US with
    mpg not just liters.
I 'get' what you mean about trying out other
vehicles, for myself and I think many out
there, it could be a Rolls, Porsche, Ferrari, etc,
after a year or so , for me, its like la ti da....
    what else is out there..

I still own and drive my 2012 Quattroporte Sport GTS it has clocked over 40k kms. Other than the sticky buttons (which I just rubbed off) and some leather upholstery of the glove box panel bubbling off, and blue pseudo leather upholstery of the side of the seats almost melted with the seatbelt buckles sticking to them, after the car sat for some months during the pandemic, I have had no major issues with it.
Replaced the lower radiator hose though, a few years back and the coolant reservoir tank twice, oh and the power window mechanisms.
It still is a lovely car to drive around with the fam.

I loved my Duoselect, the Automática is just a nice Limusine (I owned both). The Duoselect was much sportier and aggressive. I loved to take it to the mountains to really drive it hard and feel all that power. I was lucky, I never had problems.

Yes, my DuoSelect QP even feels sportier than my ZF GranTurismo S, despite the latter being a coupe and having a larger engine. Besides the slushbox, the ZF gear ratios are much lower, with 5th and 6th both being overdrive. The DuoSelect QP runs 3300 RPM at 80MPH in 6th gear, it's kinda insane (and inefficient).
Coupled with the QP having a much nicer interior build quality, it's clearly the more Italian car.

I also own both 2005 Quattroporte and 2012 Granturismo s. The Quattroporte duo select is the true drivers or petrol head car.
It is an involving and brilliant driving experience. The problem is most people have opinions without owning one.
The Quattroporte is sports sedan . This is not designed as a limo. I also had no issues with the transmission still on original clutch 62,000 miles, driven on manual sport mode only

I like the video and appreciate the content, but I'm not sure 5 months counts as "long term ownership". Even times 3. I mean, did you ever even take one of these things for a big 4th year service...? All cars like this have bad mpg and high tax, but a major service every 2 years (as opposed to 4 in a Porsche say) is a BIG difference in running costs. I'm more interested to hear about that

    Fantastic video mate.
I’m looking at quattroportes at the moment. With a budget of £15K max, I’m surprised to find a few low miles 08-09 examples that seem to tick all the boxes. And thanks for confirming my aversion to the Duo-Shift.
I’ve given up listening to everyone who says they’re all terrible money-pits. That might be the case for my other choice, a Bentley continental W12 GT. The gremlins seem to come as standard on those.
I just love the way the QP looks. And where I live at any rate, Bentley GTs are ten a penny.
I’m just a working bloke. So obviously I’m worried about running costs. BUT I don’t expect the QP to cost the same as a Renault Clio to own. The car won’t be a daily driver (I walk the half mile to work each day) but at the same time I intend using my QP regularly. And just like my current car, a gas-guzzling SUV, I will be making long trips to Europe.
As I see it, I need to be realistic about the regular costs of ownership. Tax. Insurance. MOT. Then be prepared for the higher costs of servicing. And put some money by for the ‘What Ifs’. As long as I don’t need a suspension rebuild, a new gearbox AND two new turbos in the same year, I should be fine……
And I totally agree with you that life’s too short to drive only boring cars….. (did you say that? Or was that my evil twin?)

@@HSGAutomotive I think the design is a matter of engineering taste: adult choice but also bit dull zf, or special and bit more demanding duo select. Rational and real minus for duo select is needing to replace clutch discs regularly, for about 3.000 euro. Like every other 75.000 kilometers when not driven by idiot. But when not driven daily, that is once in more then 10 years.

    • @HSGAutomotive
      @HSGAutomotive  Рік тому +1

@@marcopastors1836 It would be were they not to get through clutches significantly quicker than that if used in ‘auto’ mode, something which any luxury limo should be able to do. That aside the clutches aren’t the only issue which the DuoSelect has anyway, they are known for common F1 pump failure.

@@HSGAutomotive that is true, though f1 problem unknown to me in more then 8 years ownership. Maybe lucky. I usually drive automode, but not like it is a race. Probably that is the reason for long intervals between changes. Now the cars get older, I think there will be more caring owners, would be a shame if they would be discouraged to buy the duo select. Driving it needs attention and is rewarding. Maybe worth a thought when you buy your fourth;-)

    • @HenryCavill-cv3kz
      @HenryCavill-cv3kz Рік тому +1

@@marcopastors1836for me personally, there is no point in owning this car and not driving it on a daily basis. Same goes for many other cars. That doesn’t make me an idiot, if anything it makes me more of a real driver than yourself. Whats the point of having a garage queen car and driving it once or twice a month? If that is the case, what is your daily driver because that car matters more than your weekend car
The DuoSelect should have never been offered on a car like this. End of story. The purpose of the car leaned more towards the luxury side rather than performance so it should have a gearbox fit for purpose. It was even a terrible gearbox on Ferrari cars which are geared towards performance. By all means stay away from that dogshit of a gearbox

At 28k I started it cold and heard that dreadful clicking noise for a second and said, that's it. I;m selling it. Why, inquired to several shops the cost of replacement and I was quoted, between 8 and 12 thousand dollars. I only paid 30k for the car with 14k miles on it. I'm currently looking for another GT with the year > 2010 where the variator issue was fixed.

I own a '08 Mercedes S Class. I went to test drive the 2012 QP. Unfortunately, I found this car to be a rattle trap, road very stiffly and uncomfortably, quite a bit noisy and although it was powerful, seemed to be a loosely made vehicle. I decided not to buy one and kept my Mercedes. I also drove the next generation 2015 QP model and it was bland and seemingly made poorly. I have decided to write off Maserati sedans for me. They simply seem to be a flawed, poorly made, noisy sedans. I've owned 73 vehicles since 1974, so in many ways I own cars they way you said you do.

It definitely doesn't have the sturdiness of a Merc, but its to be expected with a hand made Italian exotic. That's where most prospective owners get their expectations wrong, thinking of it as an Italian Jag etc, whereas it should be looked at as a four door Ferrari, with the same upsides and downsides of that. That being said, parts aren't too bad on price surprisingly, which is a nice advantage over many German luxury cars
