The best thing is that both of their stories match up, and they both feel it was the greatest at bat of all time. And it's also nice to see how humble Gagne is about losing this particular shootout.
Not exactly, Bonds has claimed it was supposed to be only fastballs and that he got pissed when Gagne threw him that one breaking ball, so one of them either misremembers the rules or is lying about what they were.
@@Stormie33And Gagne has claimed elsewhere that he said he was gonna throw one off speed where here he says Bonds called one off speed. So I suspect this story gets a little fancier with each retelling
Bonds is the goat, loved this duel... but the underrated topic is how nasty and perfect that backdoor curve was... like jesus it was filthy. 98 mph fball to a 78mph curve..so dirty. That rings up or gets outs 99% of all major league hitters. Again, Bonds was so incredible to watch.
Both Gagne and Bonds juiced out of their minds. At least it was a level playing field with the exception of the pitch limitations. Gagne looks way more healthy now than he did back then.
He actually attempted a comeback 4 years ago at age 41 and got his fastball back up into the 90s lol. Might have prolonged his career had he gotten in shape sooner. Elbow operations didn’t help either
Great story, and great interview. It was never proven that Barry Bonds took steroids but I can tell you even if he did, it might’ve given him an advantage to hit the ball farther, but he was already the best player this game has ever seen. With every one else that I’ve been in the steroids and has been on steroids since, he was the most scrutinized and it was very unfair. There will never be another Barry bonds. Mark McGwire in his best years never even came close to the talent Barry bonds was!!!
Bonds admitted to taking The Cream and The Clear lol. Do your homework. And no….he was not the greatest ever before steroids. He was certainly in the convo but not the GOAT.
Over their whole career? It's easily Mariano Rivera. Gagne had that one insane season, though. And a few other crazy ones. The last decade has been Kimbrel. They're all really fun to watch. Chapman, too, but he's a little behind Kimbrel. A LOT behind him in craftiness
Wasn't really a REAL 1 on 1 duel where Barry asked for a handicap. Let Eric have his full pitch arsenal, and choice of when he throws them then it's actual talent vs talent. This was just a stacked deck. All Barry had to do was get past the 1 breaking ball and he knew what the rest of the pitches would be.
@@Garrett1240 Riviera had a better career...what is false about that? Gagne closed the door harder and absolutely dominated harder than anyone ...84 consecutive saves..it's a record that Nobody has broken.
I heard a different version of the story where gagne told bonds he was only gonna throw one off speed, cause he was overconfident about his fastball. He thought he was gonna strike him out with the back door curve, and shit himself when he realized he could only throw fastballs for the rest of the at bat. Changed his story up later when bonds shit all over him
The language barrier must have been "you only get 1" barry meant fastballs. "You only get one no changeups" eric not speaking English-speaking the same as now thinks ok I get one off speed all fastballs the rest. Thinking bonds knew he had a little slow curve (which he rarely threw) Growing up in different places speaking different languages i can see how it would happen.
I love the gentleman’s agreements in baseball, but in this situation, it just seems unfair. Bonds demands he pitch to him but he takes his best pitch away from him and just sits on fastballs? Pretty typical Bonds behavior. Cheat to get the edge.

Everybody was loosing agaist Bonds so…. Nothing to feel shame about
Easy to take it well when everyone agree that the set of rules clearly advantaged the best hitter of alll time.
I've watched this story like 10 times, I still get goosebumps.
You must sick and tired of it by now

Yeah he used to be thicc with roid mass, wouldn't have recognized him on his appearance here.
How all pro sports should be lol. 2 gargantuan humans juiced to the gills battling
I don’t care about steroids whatsoever. It should be legal
Bonds did not do roids
Bonds Would've Looked At Gagne Now And Said Damn I Knew Eric Grew Grey Hair But Holy Crap
Had to go back and watch the at-bat one more time... never fails to pump me up! #momentum
Gagne was so pudgy as a pro athlete and now he’s retired and in shape.
I was thinking lots of booze 🍺 and his diet while traveling on the road
I was the same way when I played high school ball...now I'm in shape...l...go figure.🤔
I've seen stories from the 1880s and 90s, of beer being at 3rd base for anyone getting that far round 😅😅
He actually attempted a comeback 4 years ago at age 41 and got his fastball back up into the 90s lol. Might have prolonged his career had he gotten in shape sooner. Elbow operations didn’t help either
And Bonds is a pretty serious recreational cyclist. And from all reports a really down to earth good guy.
This series is really coming into its own nice work guys these are always a treat
I saw this live wow .... you knew it was special
I saw this live with my opinionated Italian grandpa. He marked out for this and didn't even like baseball much...
Thank you for the like. I miss Mr. Lasorda. The Giants Dodgers rivalry just isn't the same with out him not around...
I would like to hear the catchers thoughts on him shaking off all the change ups. Like was he wondering why is he shaking me off.
😂😂

Most dominant closer of his time 💯
And Kimbrel from 2011-2013 is a close second
@EL I think Mo is the best closer of all
time but Gagne for those 84 games without a blown save is definitely the most dominant
@Danny Chains in terms of dominance I can’t think of anyone even close to Gagne other than Kimbrel
Rivera dude
Over their whole career? It's easily Mariano Rivera.
Gagne had that one insane season, though. And a few other crazy ones.
The last decade has been Kimbrel.
They're all really fun to watch. Chapman, too, but he's a little behind Kimbrel. A LOT behind him in craftiness
Wow. Gagne still looks good. Kind of like he could still pitch today...
@Eric Rerrud11 Probably because all of the steroids...
Sick backstory behind that!
This story was awesome!
GOAT vs GOAT!
I watched this at bat maybe 2 hours before this video was uploaded... freaky
Awesome information! I never knew they had a gentleman's agreement about the pitches. Such cool info
THATS Eric Gagne now? Holy shit I don’t think I would’ve recognized him if I saw him.
Life long giants fan and Gagne was my favorite pitcher.
Great story. A Great vs a GOAT
Epic.
Gagne was shooting up Giambi when he had that conversation with Bonds lol
canseco and mcguire took that little boy giambi under their wings and took care of him.
I watched this at bat live. Complete mark for this.
Great story
ILY Eric Gagne
That’s the greatest story.
I love it I love it I love it!!!!❤❤❤❤

future tiger Bauer. Nice content.
Oooooo ok this makes sense now. That 2-2 fastball never made sense to me. I thought it was all ego.
This means that if Gagne would have pitched them the way he would typically pitch without restrictions; he probably would have got him.
@@Carlos.PerlaRE who knows bonds is bonds, he probably would've be able to stay on it and hit a double
@@aneelchattar8600 this is what makes the whole story intriguing because we will never know.
Who was that actor playing Gagne? Did a good job.
I’d love to have seen Bonds vs Ohtani.
That’s a dope story
"Trying to backdoor a little breaking ball, and he juuuuust missed"
They knew it was a very close call.
This has to be the best at bat In history. Although I’m a Dodger fan, for the sake of baseball Bonds hitting the homer is the best ending.
I just hit a home run at Kansas City 461ft in mlb the show 21
No change up? Why limit his best pitch. Why???
I like the 1978 WS Bob Welch vs Reggie Jackson thats a battle! Check it out some time.
Waiting for that new vlog
Let's see a bonds vs bauer match up!
Bauer You should come to AZ and Play Catch with me
I miss these moments and Lasorda. One of the last guys to appreciate the rivalry...
whoa he looks like a totally different guy
He actually struck him out. Bonds is still the best.
This is FUCKING EPIC lol
Gagne and rivera are the two best closers ever
Yep
It’s impossible for a French Canadian to totally lose the accent.
Trevor Bauer, did you say on Twitter that Braves fans didn’t like you much?
Nope, and we would love to see you in a Braves uniform.
How about now
@@jujuonthatqueef5043
Depends on if he is guilty.
Eric Your were the most dominant closer of all time...
RIVERA
There’s this guy named Rivera
Gagne was the most dominant! Rivera had a better career overall but he didn't dominate hitters like Gagne.
SlapaClown that’s just patently false. Gagne had one or two better years, that’s it.

Trev, would love to see you in Padres brown
Cubbie blue, baby!
Man gagne looks like a completely different person
I would of thrown a change up at 2 and 2😂
Gagne got off the juice and looks better than ever. All that steroid bloat is gone.
What happened to gagne. He looks like hes about to close one out for tmrw night’s game
If Bonds had done it without steroids, he would have gone into the hall with God Status. He started with the clear and the cream and now he's nothing.
Almost as good as reggie jackson vs bob welch in world series...the first pitch that reggie swings and misses...
Gangé looks like such a typical Québecois
I can’t understand why he would agree to no change up and only one off speed. That’s crazy and dumb.
Level playing ground. Juice vs Juice but the Greatest closer vs the best hitter of their eras
2nd best closer

Here’s Bonds’s version of this story.
BARRY F/ING BONDS
How the hell does Bonds tell the pitcher how to pitch him?? Trash!!!
I came her for Eric Gagne, not Eric Gagne Millar
Can everyone but gagne stfu and let the man tell the story.
#welcometothejungle #gameover

how is that cheating? He wanted full power vs full power and Gagne agreed. Gagne choose to not pitch everything, Bonds had no control over that.
Exactly. If you can load up your swing, knowing you won't get offspeed, that makes it a lot easier than wondering if you will get 100 or 75.
First
too much Bauer
