This week our builder and architects come up to help us make some sense of this abandoned old house! We discussed visions and out buildings, saunas and our whole idea of the space and extension changed dramatically! Living in the woods, we want lots of outdoor space and perhaps our initial ideas weren't allowing that.
We renovate the barn and create space for a walk in wardrobe plus we tidy and remove all of the old pieces of furniture and random bits that were left by the previous owners to finally see what space were working with!
Craig timelapse his clean up and clear out of his new soon to be workshop with all of his tools to help with this DIY renovation all in one tidy space.
And Aimee's mum comes over to help us renovate the house. Demolition of the living room commences and we uncover a beautiful stone wall underneath.
This house is giving us everything we want right now and we can just imagine how it's going to be once it's all finished, it's our new home and interior designed!! So exciting! Can't wait to show you the before and after renovation!

Please guys wear masks whenever you're doing anything that's blowing dust or drywall powder, cement dust and mouse or bird droppings. It's extremely important to protect yourself against things like histoplasmosis and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis ( IPF). My husband passed away from IPF, he was a construction worker who dealt with a lot of dust. Love you and guys Love watching you. Please be careful

@@faygal2 This video may have been recorded before they saw the comments on their last video. I believe there's a bit of a lag between when the videos are recorded and when they are posted. I hope they have by now invested in some good masks or respirators.
You've got mould spores...everywhere! Wear masks and gloves...DON'T even think about taking your clothes to the cottage until you have a mould free space.I moved to somewhere with just a little bit of mould in a built in wardrobe and my clothes were attacked by mould...if I didn't wear stuff for 2 weeks I had to rewash everything,ended up throwing lots of clothes away 😢. Going back to the van hands/hair/clothes/boots could potentially be taking mould back there.Please rethink the way you're doing things.I have a daughter who was very ill for years through exposure to mould.
Please, full PPE to not only protect your health and safety but to show viewers a good practice!
When I was a labourer on sites as a student holiday job some 60+ years ago there was no H&S or PPE, I'm still here and healthy apart from old injuries from playing Cricket and Rugby. If the atmosphere was too dusty I just tied an handkerchief around nose and mouth, always had 2 clean ones in pocket every morning, not always ironed though. Still do, never know when a damsel in distress will need one.
@@tonys1636 Sir, that is anecdotal evidence and doesn't mean that is true for a lot of people in construction... My dad works in it and never wore those things either but now his lungs are screwed and he is always hacking. See how anecdotal evidence goes: both ways...

AIMEE!! DON'T HANG ANY CLOTHES ON RACKS!! KEEP IT IN BAGS!! there's so much mould everywhere that it will spread and it's IMPOSSIBLE to get rid of once it spreads to everything, it can ruins clothes and accessories really really quickly, it's truly such a nightmare to deal with once it's in all of your stuff, omg girl seriously, I wouldn't be taking any stuff out of bags until everything has been treated and sealed at LEAST!! living out of bags is better than losing everything to mould! good luck I really hope it all goes well
I really hate to break it to you but both mice and rats can and will climb and chew through the plastic drawers. They have access to your hanging clothes and will chew them to take bedding home to the family. The best thing is an aluminum trunk chest with interior cedar on the "walls" of the trunk . They can't chew through the metal and the cedar keeps moths away.
Yep...this is accurate. Hanging clothes up is zero protection, unfortunately. Good advice re: metal with cedar.
I found that ikea Samla, so long as you weigh down or seal the lids (gaffer tape is good) are good plastic tubs that mice, certainly, can’t seem to eat through. Other plastic tho, they DEFFO will try if they think they’re getting food. I have vivid memories of finding a hole in the toe of my adidas trainers, which, being as I find it hard to find shoes that fit, I was so angry about. I had to then settle for a pair of hot pink suede trainers to replace them (the only ones that fit…) lesson learned. And then I also got a couple of cats
And if the room is at all damp, your clothes will mould quickly.

Hantavirus is spread when virus-containing particles from rodent urine, droppings, or saliva are stirred into the air. It is important to avoid actions that raise dust, such as sweeping or vacuuming. Infection occurs when you breathe in virus particles.
Most people do not understand tiny dust or microdot particles seep in through the skin or airborne into the nostrils moth into the lungs and that’s what starts disease spreading through our bodies !

@@nicolad8822- Although it may not be common, the amount of renovation is very extensive and I’m sure not that common either. Very likely this type of work is done by professionals who would be wearing PPE. It’s not worth taking chances with your health. It’s like crossing your fingers and hoping for the best.
I posted about it last week, they don't seem to be taking things too seriously why I doubt my 1 post will be seen by them 100s of other posters telling them to mask up surely was not missed
Mice can climb right up into your clothes (ask me how I know)! You need to solve the rodent problem ASAP. Hand tools tend to walk off with your workmen so you might want to spray paint the handles in a distinctive color (like red). Your stone walls will be warmer if you repoint them from one or both sides (inside/outside). Think about which way the wind blows when deciding which walls to reveal. And if you're going to make masonry or wood dust or around rodent droppings, WEAR A MASK! For the rodents, you may actually need a professional-grade respirator, sold at home improvement stores.

Idea: keep some of the stone tools, polish a bit, frame and hang as a story to share when people ask. It was used to build the home :) cool story and memory
As they say in the southern States, "bless your heart" for thinking hanging your clothes up will keep the mice off of them :). I would put everything in tightly sealed plastic boxes, personally.

Plastic totes take on the mold smell very quickly, and the smell transfers to all the contents. I know this from miserable experience. Several washings have not been able to remove the mold smell from my clothes. Glass containers with screw tops work best for kitchen pantry items. Please prioritize your health over the cottage aesthetics.

Watch your clothes Amy. Mice are excellent climbers. Unfortunately to comply with building regs you will probably have to cover most of the internal stone walls to meet the btu regulations. Your builders/architect should know all about this. We live in an old stone barn (converted !😅). Another thing if you live in a conservation area you may not be able to put a window or doorway where there previously hasn't been one. Check, check and check again with your local planning department. It's best to make them your friends. Get them on your side. Ask their advice. Happy renovating 😊

Craig, that’s a tile saw. Another tool to invest in, a reciprocating saw. It will totally be your demolition workhorse. And so useful when you start building.
Use those stones and granite pieces in your landscaping. Make a focal point! You’ll thank yourself.

You kids. I worry so. Ive been a home builder/ remodeler for decades, I was also a triathlete. I never wore a mask and now Ive got regrets...developed asthma... with mouse poo, black mold asbestos, dust....Please wear a mask. I was once invincible....

You can get some hard boxes for clothes. Like the ones you use in the garden for storing summer stuff over the winter. That way you can close them properly so no mice can get in. Bags do not keep mice or rats away. Mice can absolutely climb up to reach those clothes too.
Hi guys, the insulation around the pipes (lagging) could well be asbestos containing. Definitely be careful around it and don’t disturb too much.
Don’t panic too much, it’s not too dangerous in small quantities, issues tend to arise from repeated or excessive exposure. But it’s a sliding scale and you have to be careful. Asbestos awareness courses can be done online.
@@Toastybear1 that is simply not true. All it takes is one inhaled fibre and should ONLY be handled by experts. Ask me how I know........still miss you dad, 12 years now. Asbestos cancer is no joke and one hell of a way to die.
Fun vlog. Exciting plans. But I would keep clothes in clear plastic boxes with lids... not hang up in moist, damp, mouldy, dusty air.
They can moldy in the plastic boxes, too. I would keep them out of the house/barn until all the rodent dung and mold are out of the air. Perhaps hire a small storage unit or container for a couple of months for things that you know have not been exposed.
Aimee, you're gonna want to make sure the plastic box lids are all fully closed, or the wee mousies will make your clothing their lovely new homes.
Don't want to worry you... If you've got mice there, and custard is parked close by, I hope custard doesn't have any holes larger than say a couple of centimetres diameter.
They'll eat wiring as well. Lay baits, and plenty of them in buildings and custard

Just some advice I wouldn't have your clothes open in the shed if it's damp as you'll find mold will grow and ruin you stuff so would get stuff to cover over them

Hey guys, if your after keeping the lovely stone interior but your wanting to insulate the house you could take a look at some of the new external rendering options that are available. They come with great insulative properties and it would mean you could keep the old school cottage vibes internally. Also old stone house are only cold when you let them get cold, the stone will store the heat as long as the house is continuously heated. Back in the day the fire would always be burning! Ps get someone in to re point your walls with lyme and get rid of the nasty cement! It stops the walls from breathing and encourages damp! Old cottages are alive! The last thing you want to do is make it sweat!

The stone walls will have to be insulated either on the inside or the outside,except for any walls that are completely internal ie. rooms on both sides. Aimee get your clothes packed into lidded storage containers pronto.

I'm so glad you guys are doing so much demolition. You really want the home to be as clean as possible before you rebuild. It's a lot of work, but so worth it in the long run.
You can keep the stone walls as they are, but it won't make the room very energy efficient, especially if they're not south-facing. They'll feel like a cold, damp mass in the depths of winter. And, yeah, you'll likely have to come up with a new strategy to get rid of the rodents, as Im sure that Amy's clothes havent seen the last of them. :(
Y’all could save any rocks or bricks to use in your landscaping! Not to discourage y’all but mice and rats can climb very easily and even tho you’ve hung your clothes up, they can still get to them. You might want to cover them up for some extra protection against the mold and mildew. Excited for y’all to get the plans from the architect! Can’t wait to see what y’all have planned! 😊
Mice traps that don’t use poison can be put purchased that use electric shock. It’s a much more humane way to treat them vs the poison which is a slow death. Good luck with a very hard problem to deal with.
Get a 5 gallon bucket of water and a flip lid and ramp up to the flip lid, then bait it. Mouse falls in and drowns .
That fireplace used to be an inglenook, it would be fab to open it up ❤

the best wall to keep stone will be the one with the fire. your beat option to clean that wall up would be sand blast and repoint with a lime cement not brick acid all though it will work. good news the plastic coming up the wall means someone has waterproofed the floor

You may already know this, but I'm sure someone over the years used cement/concrete mortar to make bad repairs. You will definitely want to remove any concrete mortar/rendering as it doesn't let the stone breath/let moisture escape. This causes damage to stone and non-modern bricks. Only use lime mortar for pointing and rendering.
You should put a night vision camera up on your clothing. I bet you will be surprised to see how many mice are going to run in and out of your clothes. Hanging them up isn't going to stop them unfortunately. You won't even know they are there until you find holes in your clothes.
You could put a conservatory instead of an extension of coarse in keeping with the style of your cottage because even if it’s cold outside and the sun is shining it’s cozy there. I bought a cottage with a small conservatory never having one before and we love it spending about 6 months of the year saving on heating cost we are retired now 😅 but before we renovated a 3 storey house in a village called New Lanark (historic) and then converted 2 cottages into one so I know what work is ahead it’s very rewarding good luck love your videos good fun entertaining 😂😂 Ann 🏴 PS you could put hooks on the beams to take the bags of the floor.🐭maybe get a cat 🙀
Hi Craig n Amy I have an idea for the stone wall room! Mind you I'm no architect but to solve your 'I want to see the stone' problem and your 'we need insulation' problem you may want to consider some sort of clear resin on the wall to fill the gaps and create a barrier while still letting you see the pretty stones. Run that idea buy your house building peeps and let me know if anything comes of it. Otherwise I'm happy for you two and my God bless your new home and it's construction!

So agree with decision on cottage…I would think of that as a guesthouse until u can renovate the barn…that has the space and the possibility for a great looking house…good luck!

Hiya, I’m doing up a stone cottage in North Wales. We’re a bit further ahead in our project and lucky that we have a family full of builders.
I would hire a sand blaster to clean off the render on your internal stone walls instead of using stone acid.
If your floors and roof are well insulated with double glazed windows and good quality doors, your stone should be sufficient at holding in heat and will keep cool in the summer without insulated plaster board, although it will help a little. We’ve gone for a mixture of insulated plaster boarded walls and then we’re pointing up some stone walls to keep character. Excited to watch your reno. Good luck ☺️

Since day one, I have thought you should make the barn your main home and the cottage as your hobby spaces and guest accommodation.
The L-shape of the barn will give you a wonderfully sheltered south-west facing sun deck.

For the stone walls, you need to rake out the old mortar and then repoint and seal the stone. It will look spot on if done properly! And with the fire on and heating it won’t be too cold! We have a spiral stair case/ inglenook fireplace/ a stone wall that carries into the bedroom off the spiral staircase and the original flagstone flooring in and it’s no colder than the rest of the house as the walls are so thick, we live in south wales though so may be colder up there?!
