The touching of noses, as you pointed out (it's a Disney movie, so she can do that to a demon), actually is the greeting used in Hawaiian/Polynesian traditions. "Aloha" means "breath of life". When you greet someone, you touch noses to "share" the breath of life.... so Moana respectfully greeted Te Ka with the traditional greeting and Te Ka responded in such. As Moana and Te Fiti did the same as the parted. (Aloha being both a hello and a goodbye. ;))

Te Fiti and Te Ka's reveal is among my favorite moments in a movie. Cause when I made the connection, I was just so impressed and surprised. Volcanoes are a big part of islands, ocean life, and Polynesian life. They bring death and destruction when they erupt, but at the same time volcanic soil is amazing for farming and creates many of the islands and the life on them. Its the perfect example of a God/Goddess of Life who can also become a God/Goddess of death. It even makes sense when Te Fiti goes to sleep...as in a volcano sleeping. And it makes so much sense when you realize that is what Te Ka was. Te Ka was Te Fiti, but the destructive side of her. One of the greatest moments in writing, honestly, and I'm still impressed by that bit of this movie to this day.
Also, note Maui lingering around Moana's boat as an eagle at the end. I think he'll always have a friend in her, and that's really what he always needed. A person that cared for him, and not just what he could do for them.

  • @ventusarashi

“They don’t seek more, they don’t want more.” Many Asian and Polynesian cultures in the old days had the mentality of “Only take what you need.” In this way, they gave their environment a chance to heal and replenish their resources-it was also practiced because it was a way of survival. While that mentality is still practiced, it is not nearly as widespread today.

One of the more common theories is technological advancement - you have to develop a new type of boats - you can reach the western isles with an outrigger canoe, but need a double-hulled canoe for the longer voyages across the Pacific. Or it could have been wind patterns shifting.

Imo Moana has one of the best soundtrack. I also loved how Moana saved the world without needing a love interest, giving up on her identity, or thinking she could do it herself. It's also subverts the trope of needing a strong man to do everything for a strong girl. They both needed each other, and in the end, she became a master in her own right.

I love this film! from the beautiful story and the scenery and of course the characters and the cast who plays them. The songs in this movie just make you want to sing along and rewind and turn the TV up and listen to them again but louder. It is definitely a favourite of mine. And for those who have not seen this movie, highly recommend it, for it's great for all the family, and it just brings the kid out in all of us. Your welcome!

I wish there was some way to bring Walt Disney back for a day or two to see what his studio is putting out. I think he would be delighted.
This is such a perfect film. So beautiful and the music is wonderful. I still get tears in my eyes when I watch it.

Alan Tudyk plays a lot of minor characters in Disney movies, particularly animals. Some of his other voice roles are King Candy (Wreck-It Ralph), the Duke of Weselton (Frozen), Duke Weaselton (Zootopia), Knowsmore (Ralph Breaks the Internet), Iago (live-action Aladdin remake), Tuk Tuk (Raya and the Last Dragon), and the toucan from Encanto.

I wish my mother could have seen this movie. She lived in Hawai’i briefly, as a girl in the 1930s, and also traveled a little around the South Pacific generally (Fiji, Samoa, etc.) with her family. They left Hawai’i and returned to the mainland because they knew war with Japan was coming. But it really got under her skin; she loved it more than any place she ever lived, and always wanted to go back but was never able to. I can’t see this movie without thinking of her and missing her.
24:51 - Tamatoa’s song is sung in the style of the late great David Bowie.
38:29 - Maui is a trickster-hero who is part of Polynesian mythology throughout the South Pacific, from the Maori to the Hawai’ians. The island of Maui within the Hawai’ian archipelago is named after the mythological Maui (or, more precisely, is named after someone who was named after the mythological Maui).
42:09 - Disney has announced plans for a Moana spinoff tv series, but it’s a couple of years off.

Good ear, yes a Kiwi, Tem Morrison. The folklore of Maui & Moana stretches all the way through P:olynesia cultures as far down to New Zealand Maori. It's a shared lore, a shared oral history of our ancestors that connects us all. I absolutely love this movie! I was teaching in China when it released and Chinese kids loving all things Disney, it enabled me a way to share some of the Maori folklore I grew up with, in New Zealand.
I was constantly singing along with the songs in the headset, it got to the point the the entire teachers office would be lit up with us all singing the sound track toegther, it spilled over to our students and their parents who would download the movie for their children to learn so they could sing with us. It got to the point that if anyone said "thank you" for anything, there would be a chorus of "you're welcome", in response. This movie vibed life & energy into our school. One of my most treasured memories of my years teaching there.

Lived inHawaii a long time. I don't know if others have mentioned this, but most reviewers misssed it. Grandma had to die when she did because Moana's dad was to burn the boats, so grandma distracted him. Hey hey means a troublesome kid. Moana saying 'you're so amazing wasn't in the script, Auli'i said it and they kept it. I saw it 88 times, but then again, I had unlimited free IMAX passes.

    "They're trying to restrict her!"
Tbh- it would have been even more irresponsible for the adults to allow a kid to sail out into the open ocean cause, you know, its the open ocean 😃. Add to the fact that no one has sailed in a long time and no one, not even Moana knew how to sail, at first, and she was the chosen one. Sooo.... 1 point to the responsible adults 😅
