Maximus didn't think he was 200 years old. The Brotherhood gives their students basically zero education outside of combat and technology. Maximus has only a vague understanding of the pre-Fallout world. So when Lucy asked him about what happened, quote, "after the bombs dropped", Maximus thought she was talking about Shady Sands. Because to him, that's when "the bombs dropped".
Though she did specify 200yrs ago.

The Ghoul is such a bad ass NOT because he's a ghoul, but because he's a level 50 character in a level 10 world.
Buuuut being a ghoul gives you a lot of time to get experienced in many things, there's a reason why many NCR veteran rangers are ghouls in NV.

Lucy doesn't shoot her father out of anger and shoots mom out of compassion. She's a great person through and through.
And all Max wanted was fame and fortune, he got it and for the first time DIDN'T smile when he got it. Growth.
As a fan of the games, the show is the literal nuclear bomb.

The ghoul that was staring at Lucy was one of the ones from the Super Duper Mart that she freed, he’s the one who thanked her before leaving.
Lucy's line about how her dad would be broken up about destroying a community and how she wasn't raised to 'blow everyone up' hit so different at the after the twist.

I love that fact. Being in Brotherhood doesn't always mean you are a badass plus it also shows how dangerous wasteland creatures are. It's not the games anymore where you can have a fist fight with a deathclaw and win.

It is a lie. Titus died from wounds from a bear yes. But he died because Max watched him die while holding what would save him.
When Maximus said that "Titus died running," it wasn't a lie. Titus panicked and ran away from Yao guai (the mutated bear), instead of bravely engaging in battle and destroying him, as the code of the Brotherhood of Steel dictates. He was a coward.
Yeah.
He died running (away), meaning he died a coward.
It's crazy how many people don't get that and think of it in a literal sense...
22:38 Lucy had radiation poisoning so she can’t be a ghoul. Ghouls will regenerate from radiation.
Max gave her RadAway so she is fine.
Untreated radiation poisoning is one of the causes of Ghoulification

Before that group of 3 guys exhume him, there is a tombstone marker there with 2 RadAway bags feeding a tube down into the dirt. Presumably to him.

Remember at the beginning when the doctor told Lucy, "will you still want the same things after you've evolved?" then at the end, her not wanting to free her father.
Something cool about the ending is that Norm, Maximus, the Ghoul/Cooper, and Lucy all got what they wanted in the end, Norm wanted to know what was in vault 31 but it caused him to be trapped, Maximus wanted to be a knight, which he got but now he’s stuck being that and can’t be with Lucy in the vault, and Lucy wanted to find her dad, but ended up learning everything about him and how he was a villain, then there is the ghoul which didn’t find his thing yet but cooper did as well, he wanted to know more about vault tech and ended up learning about their plans when all he wanted to know was if he could take his dog

Love that in the flashback Moldaver doesn't ignore Cooper's line, instead she engage's in conversation - she's really smart and a good leader.
I was surprised when Cooper repeated the snarky line to the crowd, and then was surprised again when she took it seriously.
For non gamers “War, war never changes” is practically the official motto of the Fallout franchise.
This show is a true cautionary tale not just of letting corporations having too much power, but also the dangers of psychopaths in power. Psychopaths like Lucy’s dad and Cooper’s wife are the greatest threats to not just humanity but the world. They have no sense of respect for people or the earth, they will use or kill whoever they have to in order to get what they want. They will see the world burn if it means they can be the kings of the ashes.
Which brings interesting point that even the Master was better than them - when convinced his plan would fail (no morality bs, just facts - love it) he decided to destroy himself and large part of his operation. Lucy's dad definitely wouldn't do that.

the line is more in reference to how every faction in the wasteland want's more or less the same end goal but in different ways.
Or Queen of the Ashes as a certain famous TV series had shown.
Titus was running away, when the bear caught him. If Maximus hadn't been there, he would've died anyway.
All the vaults they were talking about, "overcrowding a vault", "making super mutant soldiers", are all vaults seen in the games.
I think that's their sly way of introducing the concept that Thaddeus is becoming a mutant. I doubt he's a ghoul, since he healed up perfectly.
Lots of people who never played the games loved this show but trust me, having played them it's 10x better. I can't believe they made a show this good.
Bud seeming so nice and "normal". One of the books on the rise of the Nazis referred to it as "the banality of evil." Most of it's leadership came across as perfectly normal people you'd interact with during daily life, not the rabid monsters most would expect.
The Ghoul's wife gave an early hint about the ending. When she was talking to Cooper about having a place in the vaults she said she could choose one of the good ones. She knew which ones she didn't want to go to. She also says when, not if, the bombs fall. She already knew the plan, everything was decided except the date.
I wouldn't be shocked if they show Norm finding Barb and maybe even the daughter in Vault 31 at the start of Season 2.

He played the part well, despite the unhappy ending.
Not only do I remember him from CHIPS, but I also remember him from the 1970 film, "The Cross and the Switch Blade" where he played a real life gang leader named Nicky Cruz.
I'm glad you enjoyed it, as a Fallout fan it's really gratifying to see others fall in love with the universe
On a side note, do you think Chet the simpering coward being the "gate keeper" is symbolic? I don't remember that term being used in the games.

@@DonutDoctor I watched the whole thing, I'm talking from a meta perspective.
One of the best moves Nolan made was deciding not to do a straight adaptation of one of the established games. Fallout is a lot like Skyrim and Mass Effect, in that it’s a game where player choice and the impact of that on the larger world is something people get invested in. If Nolan had adapted an established game but cemented certain choices that people in the player base could have done differently in their playthroughs, that would’ve alienated some portion of the audience.
In giving us a new story with a range of characters we could fall in love with and root for, he instead brought all those people together.
The cold Fusion code was the release date of the original Fallout game. I am beyond excited for what Season 2 has waiting for us. The more I look at Ella Purnell in this role the more I’m convinced that she’s perfect as Elizabeth from Bioshock Infinite

I think a lot of people missed that. And Lucy's father would probably have been sent into a killing rage over that alone, never mind all the other things.

You could say Titus died “running,” because that’s when the bear fatally wounded him. Maximus just didn’t save him from his injuries, lol.
Actually Titus did die from injuries he got running from the Yao Guai (the mutated bear), so it wasn't a lie (not completely).
One of the party guests had a comment that Coop was doing kids birthday parties to pay alimony, so we got that nugget to let us know they divorced.
But if he doesn't know where his daughter is, and he's pursuing Vault-Tec execs to find out, then sometime after the bombs fell, Vault-Tec must have kidnapped her away from him, presumably on his wife's orders.
That fact makes me think that it wasn't Vault-tec who dropped the bombs initially. I think they were prepared to, but I think someone else beat them to it or schedules got shifted unexpectedly. I doubt Coop's wife would let their daughter be that near a bomb if she knew when it was going to happen.
@@Krucifusdoes Vault Tec really have the power to drop tbe bombs? IIRC, US and China were the main powers in the Fallout universe. So it might be possible that US and China started nuking each other and Vault Tec miscalculated the bombs dropping?
@@kentinson1670 That is a great question. I do not know. I would assume so based on all the talk that the US Government was broke and Vault-tec was so big and powerful, but that's just an assumption. My knowledge of Fallout Lore is limited, I'll admit, but this show has me digging for answers.
@@Krucifus I wouldn't be surprised if the Mega-corps shown in that pre-war meeting could come up with a nuke if they wanted, or convinced the powers that be to launch them. They basically run the world.
Vault 33's experiment was Meritocracy.
It's an aristocracy/classism - everyone in 33 has been conditioned and selected to only appoint Bud's Buds (the ruling/upper class) into positions of authority and Bud's Buds ensure that only the ruling class get those positions by moving/splitting up potential opposition out of the Vault or into marriages with them.
The election they have is purely for show as they know most of the population is a sucker for a slogan.

One of my favorite Twilight Zone's is The Hunt. An old hunter and his dog drown chasing after a raccoon. Later on they come across the gate to the afterlife. The gatekeeper informs the hunter that pets arent allowed, and they have their own separate place. Not wanting to be separated from his dog, they leave the gate and continue on. They come across a 2nd gate where the keeper tells them THIS is the true gate to heaven. The other was the gate to hell... pets were not allowed because they would have smelled the brimstone and warned their masters.
23:46 Titus DID die running. He was running from the Yau-Guai (Fu*k f*ck fu*k while running away) and got thrown against a boulder which either knocked him out ornhe tried playing dead afterwards. Screaming help the whole time. So Maximus didn't lie there.

The missing children of Vault 33 is a continuity problem that only became clear to me the second time I watched the series. In her intro in Episode 1, Lucy is shown teaching American History (now with Ethics!) to a classroom full of children, but they are never seen again. It would have been difficult to show children attending the wedding, though, as they likely would have done under ordinary circumstances.
Good spot, just another thing to add to the immense pile of inconsistencies. It's actually easier to list the few things that stay consistent in this show.
@@marcofogli4317 aye there are some inconsistancies without a doubt, but minor ones when it comes to the actual story telling in my opinion. Having raiders slaughtering a load of kids at the wedding would have been a bit too much, even in the games, they don't allow that as far as I know#, though I really haven't tested it out in my New vegas runs.
@@peadarruane6582 also consider this: the vault have 1 child getting born after the massacre. This means the vault population is doomed since a good slice of the survivors is old and 32 is dead. What do they do? Go outside and hope to find other humans? No they split the population in 2, guaranteeing this is their last generation.
@@peadarruane6582 kids are indeed invincible in the modern games, but in the old 2d ones you could kill kids but you would become a pariah and shot on sight and get the child killer perk from what i've heard
If they really were going for a 50's type society feel, there would be no reason to show the children in any of the other groups scenes in the season. They wouldn't attend a wedding, they wouldn't attend a vault meeting to discuss what to do with captives, and Betty might not have assigned anyone with children (except Steph) to 32 and they wouldn't be invited to a send off. Children underfoot at adult functions is a relatively new thing. I grew up in the 80s and *any* social event for my parents meant babysitter, same as everyone else in my class.
They could have, however, been seen wandering the halls - so I won't attribute too much to writing choice over production choice (children are expensive to keep around a set).

This is a rare channel that picked up on this show’s actual plot…in particular, that Maximus isn’t some evil, power hungry schemer. Even after Dane confesses to injuring their own foot, I see comments saying “Why are they lying for Maximus??” “Wait, wut, who actually sabotaged Dane??”
He’s just a nice kid trying to live up to what he thought were heroes! He’s not out to con the system or pull a coup!

This show did a fantastic job of showing the game world that we love, without trying to tame it or censor it. It feels like modern writers have forgotten that the worse the situation, the greater the shock when its revealed or resolved. Well, these ones remembered that, and they did a great job. Just enough hand holding for those unfamiliar with the games to enter the world and tell a story they'd understand. But all the juicy details to feed the familiar with lore from the game world. The funny thing about Fallout is that the IP was originally spawned as a spinoff of the game Wasteland. The first couple of Fallout games came about from Interplay, which isnt around anymore. But the IP was bought by Bethesda. They put out Fallout 3, approaching it much in the same way they did their Elder Scrolls series of games, and absolutely knocked it outta the park. Fallout: New Vegas, which this series shares a fair deal of regional lore with (Involving the NCR specifically, and New Vegas at the end) was actually made by Obsidian! Bethesda went on to make Fallout 4 (Excellent with a great modding community), and Fallout 76 (its still got a mixed reception. It plays like a small scale MMO, and they decided to launch the game with a very limited smattering of NPCs). Obsidian went on to make The Outer Worlds, which doesnt get as much love as it should. Its more narratively driven, like Mass Effect, as opposed to open world like New Vegas was.

The doctors quote from ep 2 really lands hard for Maximus and Lucy "Will you still want the same things when you have become a different animal altogether" seriously both of their world views are shattered, they're heroes aren't what they thought them 2 be (Dad & Brotherhood) from wanting to save her dad 2 pointing a gun at him learning how vile he truly was, Maximus pretending to be a knight 2 actually becoming one along with learning of how much more bs the BH actually is.

After watching & learning what vault 31 is, the conversations & "leaders" in 33 sound SOOOOO corporate/HR buzz word driven & ultra positive (sickeningly so sometimes), even with the "performance evaluations".
The mother was beyond saving she was at ground Zero she may not have even been able to walk given how burned she was.

Honestly as someone who had a bit of understanding about fallout and knew the vaults were experiments and stuff for vault tech. I was still blown away at some of the story. I had no idea vault tech facilitated the end of civilisation TWICE.
FYI, the Fallout fan base is about as contentious as the Star Wars fan base, so to have almost all of them in agreement that this season was amazing is saying something. That's a high bar and this show vaulted right over it.

This show is the one of the most accurate game to show adaptation of any that I've seen.

@@yrussq Yes, the bar is low for the most part (though raising lately as many good adaptations have come out in recent years). This show however is a great adaptation too.
I'm an old Fallout fan that enjoyed the games and really liked this series. While I never played the Wasteland game that is kind of the precursor to the Fallout series, I did get the 1st game back in 97 and have loved the games since. While I am more of a fan of the isometric style of Fallout, Fallout 2, and the now decanonized Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel games, I have enjoyed playing the Bethesda Games from Fallout 3 and beyond. Hope you enjoy playing the games and as with you I am looking forward to future seasons of the show
As someone who has played Fallout since before there were numbers in the title, the show did a great job of keeping the feel of the universe. There are a few things that some people didn't like but I thought it was really good. If you are planning on playing the games know that Fallout 1, 2, Tactics, and Brotherhood of Steel are all isometric turn based games. Fallout 3, New Vegas, 4, and 76 are first person rpgs. If you want to start at the beginning that would be amazing but remember that the original Fallout titles come from a time where tutorials were barely a thing, quest markers were basically brand new, and games never held your hand. That being said, if you do decide to play you'll have at least one person watching.

Small correction: Fallout was originally developed in 1997 by Interplay, a dev studio led by Tim Cain and Chris Jones. They also made Fallout 2. In 2007, Bethesda acquired the intellectual property and developed Fallout 3. Then, many of the original devs were brought back in (now called Obsidian) to develop Fallout: New Vegas, which Bethesda published. Then Bethesda developed Fallout 4 and Fallout 76.

In Fall Out 3 the bomb in Megaton is a Vault Tech bomb. In 4 you start right before they drop.
Nope, it isn't. The logo on the bomb looks similar, but it isn't the Vault-Tec one. Vault-Tec's logo is 3 parallel lines that run into a circle in the middle. The logo on the bomb only has two lines, missing the middle one. It is close, but it definitely is not Vault-Tec's logo.
The New Vegas reveal at the end is the best kind of fanservice.
FONV was plagued by a massive amount of bugs on release, and many still persist to this day. It was a little overshadowed by it's proximity to the release of FO3, which also contributed to the half-baked-ness.
Even with all that, many consider it the best entry, narratively. And it ties in a whole lot to the events of the TV series, especially with regards to the New California Republic, the west coast Brotherhood of Steel, Robco, etc. There are drastically different endings to the game depending on player choice, and it will be interesting to see which one season 2 codifies as canon, and how.
The Ghoul kills several knights in power armor easily in this episode, yet he had trouble with Maximus earlier. The best armor is plot armor.
Never played the game but seen UA-camrs play it I've only seen like clip bits of everything that this franchise is about but this show made me a believer in wanting to watch people play that all the original games including all the new ones since 1997 I'm glad all the people that are part of the fallout franchise finally got their justice in a TV show version that matches the game as much as possible I can't wait for season two❤

I'm guessing maximus has like 10 to endurance and luck and 1 to intelligence and charisma.
In the FO4 game there are Scammers such as one guy who tries to sell you a "credit card". Another Scammer is a guy who pretends to be a well known person named Preston. But his scam is revealed when he asks for money (bottle caps). The real Preston never asks for money. There is also a child scammer who tries to sell you a tour of a certain place even though you can get it for free. There are probably more that I can't recall right now. Honestly, I wouldn't say Maximus telling the brotherhood that Titus died running was a lie because he was running from the Yao gui (irradiated bear)when he got fatally wounded. He obviously didn't give them all the details but that is true titus was a coward

It’s not a spoiler but the ghoul being so accurate and how his shootout scenes sometimes are in slow motion, it’s a homage to the VATS targeting in the games, it’s really cool to play around with lol
To what you said at the end: Cooper (the ghoul) clearly divorced his wife since hes out of money and the guys at the birthday party joke about it, saying its because of "alimony" that Cooper has to do birthday parties. It seems he got to keep his daughter though? I mean she was with him when the bombs fell so there a many unanswered questions here! Great reaction as always!

Some fans may have had doubts, after seeing the first snippets of the production I wasn't one of them. The attention to detail paid in the set pieces spoke volumes about production concerns with remaining faithful to the games. Fun watching your reaction through this show since it reminded me of my "blind" reaction at playing Fallout 4 for the first time. The only aspect that actually surprised me about this show was just how good of a job all involved did at remaining true to the spirit of the game but breathing a life into it that even people who weren't familiar with it would get enthralled by. Hope you are able to find a paisley vault suit for season 2.
The radio host is played by Fred Amisen from "Portlandia" and he's basically playing a Portlandia character, wich is probably not far from playing himself.
In Fallout3, there are radio stations throughout the wasteland, that broadcasts music that you can listen to via your pip-boy (wich is the game's interface for character stats, messages, maps et cetera)
Fallout 3 was the first game in the series that was made by Bethesda.
Fallout 1 and 2 was created by Interplay/Blackisle studios.
Blackisle came back and produced Fallout: New Vegas, but Bethesda holds the rights to the franchise.
The series looks most like Fallout3, at least this first season.
The overall story arch and reveal in the final episode were very well done. And I really like the way McLean and Muldover(sp?) start as hero and villian, but in the final episode, they completely flipped. And the Ghoul also went from villian to understandable. Can't wait for Season 2!

The Rob-Co exec is a major cameo from Fallout New Vegas. He is one of the smartest, most well developed villains in the whole series. Because, the House always wins.
