One of my favorite moments is when Granny's spirit tells Moana that if she truly thinks she can't complete the task, it is perfectly okay to go home. No "you must complete it no matter what" crap.
Moana doesn't just focus on one specific island, it merges multiple Polynesian cultures together because we shared alot of the same stories! I remember showing my Dad Maui's design and he could immediately tell where each of Maui's tattoos come from
That’s so cool! I didn’t see any māori tattoo’s (as we also share the story of Maui) but I’m more happy because the smaller islands need more representation
Just a curious question but how did the similar stories happen to come about on different islands spread apart? Was it due to various islanders populating new islands/coming to another island with people already on it and spreading the stories? Or did these different island communities happen to come about the same stories independently? I don't mean to sound ignorant, I'm just genuinely interested in knowing more!

Things I noticed: -Moana's Tatau appears on Maui right over his heart. She will always be close to his heart. It is also the only Tatau that neither features himself, nor his hook. Because he didn't need his hook to teach Moana to wayfind and help her, and he did it in the end out of care for her, rather than for himself. -The necklace Moana is wearing throughout the film, in which she keeps the Heart, is worn by the Voyager Chief Ancestor, and is handed from one Voyager Chief to the next when the time to Voyage comes again. When Grandmother gave it to Moana, she was naming her the next Voyager Chief, and saying the time to Voyage was back once more after all these years. - Te Fiti is a volcano goddess, representing both the islands, fertile soil, and life they can bring, but without her Heart she becomes Te Ka, who represents is capable of only the fire and destruction a volcano can wreak.
not gonna lie but The Rock has an amazing singing voice. this movie actually made the Rock cry of joy cause this is part of his heritage having his grandpa be the wrestler "High Chief" Peter Mivya ( probably spelled wrong)
The voice of Moana's dad (Temuera Morrison) also plays the Jango Fett, Boba Fett, and the Clone Troopers in the Prequel Trilogy, The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett
His greatest but toughest role of his was Jake The Muss in Once Were Warriors. If you ever have a chance and are mentally in a good place Id suggest watching it. Trigger warning its very violent but also a representation of Pacific Islander life in the hood.
Moana is one of my fave Disney movies along with Tangled. I love Frozen and Encanto, but something about Moana hit different! I loved Moana was expected to lead and take over as chief vs getting married to a prince to be seen as valid. Her huge aspirations to save her people and everyone was much bigger than herself and I think that's why this movie sparked more of these kinds of heroines. Maui is based off of folklore, but apparently the movie Maui wasn't entirely welcome by the Polynesian people. Either way, loved the inclusion of native language in songs, as it's the first I think!
agreed! moana and encanto are absolutely my favorites and heroines like moana and mirabel are so great for kids to have growing up because their characters are so much more than “status and marriage” they’re teenagers they don’t need to start a married life! just young girls who feel dedicated to save their homes
But I think encanto has a better tale in tht sense where u don't need to have a power to be special as many before were perfect in every way but Moana kinda is and rapunzel was also similar and tangled also because they didn't marry eachother at tht same moment after being u know saved. They actually say tht after many years of asking Eugene finally says yes. Didn't know it had taken them tht long though
The other moment that gets me is when Maui's hook is destroyed and he faces TeKa unarmed. He doesn't back down but chants in defiance in the face of certain death. That kind of bravery always gets me.
My favourite thing about Moana is that she was chosen not because she was a warrior, but because she was compassionate. She helped the sea turtle baby and because of that, the ocean chose her. Te'Ka could only be beaten by restoring the Heart to Te Fiti.

I'm white as anything, but I really appreciate that Disney is out here finally representing a more diverse people. (Not just skin colour, but also LGBT aswell in some of their other stuff). A lot of people think it doesnt matter, but I have a three year old biracial daughter and she notices. Having her say "she has the same skin as me" and being so happy about it, is so heartwarming 🖤
I'm so white that I fear showing my bare legs in the summer, because people may get blinded. We've got so many white princesses to choose from, it was getting kinda bland and boring, every one of the 'older' princesses doesn't do sh*t except for being a beautiful, kind damsel in distress waiting to be rescued by a prince whom she immediately marries. Those new Disney princesses aren't only much more diverse, so that every little girl can pick one that looks like her, they are getting more and more independent, strong and smart. What's not to love about that? 😊

I still get chills every time. And I have 7 kids, I’ve seen it a lot of times 😂
Someone on UA-cam did an edit combining We Know The Way and the end Reprise, making the song longer (which it needed to be). I love the edit more than the original song(s).
The great thing about Moana is that, even though it is about a "strong female" character, the story doesn't make it all about her proving herself despite being a girl. She is already recognized as the next chief and she has nothing to prove. The same story could have been told with a boy. In the long run I think this kind of movie is more empowering. When she sings, "I am Moana" it is filled with so much it still overwhelms me. Throughout that song she goes from defeat to remembering that she is part of a lineage of brave explorers and she carries that spirit of her ancestors. In that conviction she learns that she is more than just herself and finally knows who she is. When she sings, "I am Moana" it is with with immense joy, pride and power. And the singer brings all that to her performance. It is all in there and it overwhelms me.
I also like the fact that they didn't make the male character (Maui) weaker than Moana to make her appear better. Maui being a demigod has supernatural strength and wayfinding knowledge that he teaches to Moana, while Moana teaches Maui humility and to see himself beyond his demigod status
I tear up every time when the grandma's spirit comes back and then when Moana realizes that Te Ka is just Te Fiti who is hurt because she was betrayed. It's beautiful way of reminding us mother nature will not spare you if you wrong her.
Fun story about that screaming chicken. So we were at the store during Christmas this movie came out. We saw a toy of that chicken that screams loudly just like in the movie. I sort of joked and said "Wonder what parent would buy this for their kid?" an employee heard me and clearly done with hearing that toy go off grumbled "No one ever buys that toy."
I love this film so much, coming from one of the islands represented in this story so I recognized several of Maui's stories as well as the sleeping goddess being a mountain range, we have a similar mountain where I'm from that's called the sleeping giant. Just a great story that took me back to my childhood when we'd read stories about Maui slowing the sun down.
Growing up in New Zealand and being of Maori descent I grew up hearing the story of Maui and Mother Ranginui and Father Papatuanuku. All Polynesian legends have similarities as all are stemmed from the same story. We are sea faring people, master navigators, people of earth and water. In my family and in my opinion, most Maori whanau (family) we have a close connection and deep respect for our ancestors. We come from a long line of chiefs. I can trace my ancestry back to the Captain of my Tribal Waka (The Canoe by which my people arrived in Aotearoa aka New Zealand). Great movie and great reaction Mellow. 👍 Kia Ora
The baby turtle is Crush, the dad turtle in Finding Nemo. Disney owns Pixar so it makes it all canon. That's why the ENTIRE Pixar catalog is on Disney+ even the shorts that appear before the films. The short that goes before Moana is called Lava. It's about a lonely volcano who finally finds someone to "Lava." Ngl it made me tear up. Lol
Sorry, but you're wrong. Disney and Pixar have your own eastereggs. In that case, the turtle is only a turtle. And the short movie Lava appear in other movie from Pixar. But Sven easter egg is right. And the song You're welcome, appear the fish in the little mermaid very quickly because the writers are the same. They talked about this an interview. Other things are just coincidences.
How is it Crush? I did some research and it couldn’t possibly be Crush. The timelines don’t add up and his age is explicitly said in the movie. It seems like the only “proof” was an ad lib at the Disney park from a voice actor.
I've seen Moana so many times I've lost count! But I'd watch it many times more if my granddaughters asked". It was fun watching it you". You make movies fun! Even if they're not. Take care Mel.xx
23:07 in the legend of Mauis the reason his parents throw him in to the sea is that he was stillborn and that was they did to Stillborn. The goddess of the sea found and somehow saved him. Is that a more or less darker story then what they did here?
Hello! I am a new subscriber! After seeing your reaction to Moana, I just got to see more of your reactions! I have a younger brother who watched your reaction with me and loved it!
No matter I watch this movie multiple times, I feel so proud of my culture. As a polynesian(from french Polynesia), I can tell that movie has some similarities to polynesian culture. The oral transmission at the beginning of the movie (with grandma like it had used to be), the way of sailing (with the stars as an indication...), Maui tattoos (many legends talk about it), Maui's haka (a warrior dance that warrior used before a battle like Maui use with Te Ka), Te Fiti relate to an island of french Polynesia names Huahine (my grandmother's island where I spend my vacation during my chilhood, beautiful by the way)...So, I'm really thankful to Disney for making this movie that show my culture all around the world. And thank you so much for your reaction!!!You're so funny 🤣😂I really enjoy it 🤗👍
For Hamilton, honestly bro I’d check out your peers that’ve reacted to it and see how they found their way around copyright. Keep doing you fam. You killing it.
Disney really got a lot of the Polynesian culture and traditions right with this movie. Not only did the creators spend months researching the story of Maui and the time period of travel and the subsequent 1000 year break but all the voice actors (except for the chicken) are from Polynesian descent also.
14:10 i remember when i watched this in my living room with my family, my older brother walked in at this part and watched for like 10 seconds and was like "is he singing about stealing her boat from her" it was so hilarious that he picked up on that so fast
Grandma held the Heart of Te Fiti for Moana till she was old enough to go out on her mission. In return, the stone kept Grandma alive and well. When she returned the stone to Moana, her own mission was ended, as was her life.
I always thought the songs in this movie were better than Frozen. Not just because of LMM, but because I always felt Frozen had some songs that don't have a point, and are just there for the sake of having a cute song.
100% agree same with frozen 2 there was a lot of unnecessary songs and yes it’s a musical but musicals use songs to tell the story not fill in space. Thankfully with lin manuel on recent disney projects moana, encanto and the upcoming live action little mermaid, the songs actually serve as tools of storytelling not time filling
I like the way you supported the fact that Moana would be Chief one day from the beginning but the more you saw how capable she actually is, the more you became a fan. She isn't a Mary Sue and I love that.
The little bit of real history in this movie is that for about a thousand years, the Polynesians did stop exploring, and no one exactly knows why. (I think it started around the first century BC, but it’s been a while since I read that factoid.) So this is the Disney fairytale of why they stopped, and then started again.
I'd love to see your Hamilton reaction, it might be easier to break it up into two or three songs at a time, to get more of the music through? But that's also a lot of videos and editing. I've seen people do two parts for Act 1 and Act 2 that goes pretty well. Also, subtitles are a must because the whole play is sung through, so you don't want to miss any words.
Was not the biggest fan of this movie when I saw it in theaters but now it's one of my 4 yr old's favorite movies and it has grown to be one of my Disney favorites!!! The grandma knew from the beginning, when Moana was a baby that she had a special calling in this world. Grandma motivated and encouraged Moanas bravery and strength Also I love the message of the father apologizing/forgiving Moana. He kept her on the island to protect her but as she comes back to the island after saving Ta'kai he realizes her calling and he embraces her/forgives her It's very rare in a Disney movie to see a parent say sorry and encourage their child to thrive. Finding Nemo and Moana are the best examples in Disney of the parent's fear holding back the child but the child stepping up for themselves and showing their bravery
I was super close with my Nan, and the water. Moana is def. a favorite, but the scene with her grandma's stingray at the beginning and later meeting on the water gives me chills every time!
Everyone at work with kids was coming in singing these songs when it came out lol like darrel you good man? you been singing your welcome for two hours now
Moana is easily my second favorite Disney movie of all time. Alice in Wonderland will always be first, at least as far as I can tell. This one has hands-down the best soundtrack tho. Every single song is endlessly singable, and just makes me happy. I love this movie so much. The first time I saw it, was the week my now fiancee came from Ohio to Florida to visit me, and we were sitting on the couch, watching it on her tablet, and eating pasta, lol. Just cuddled together, in each others' arms, just being together. Maybe that is coloring my opinion of it, but so be it. I love this movie so much.
this was the first time the actually got an actress the age of the princess she was playing! and she is from hawaii! there is an awesome video of her hearing the news she got it! look it up :)
I love seeing representation better than the “it sounds kinda foreign” Ukrainian choir used in Brother Bear. From the instrumentation of this movie to the range of Colombian styles in “Encanto,” I’m all about that representation. We all connect to basic storytelling and emotions, and I love seeing how those emotions reflect around the world.
I absolutely love seeing Disney represent more cultures. I know some don’t like it, but let’s be honest, it’s rich for them to say anything when they’ve been represented by Disney all along. We need representation, and the fact it brings fresh stories is a plus.

Crazy seeing somebody watch this for the first time since I’ve seen it over 500 times thanks to my daughter lol
I think you’d like “what we do in the shadows” dir. Taika Waititi lol
Jermaine Clement (the va for the crab) is also in that movie as Vladislav
Everyone I’ve watched has the same reaction to Hei Hei screaming, and I love it 🤣
If you’re staying on the Disney animated for a while give “Tangled” a go.
I tear up every time when the grandma's spirit comes back and then when Moana realizes that Te Ka is just Te Fiti who is hurt because she was betrayed. It's beautiful way of reminding us mother nature will not spare you if you wrong her.
Hey there! Great reaction as always :). A animated movie reaction suggestion I have for you is The Last Unicorn (1982). Truly a beautiful movie.
I heard alot of Polynesians hated this movie.
To this day Teka is the most terrifying thing I've ever seen in a Disney movie
As much as I love the song "How Far I'll Go", "You're Welcome" is such a bop, and Dwayne Johnson does an amazing job performing it.
I'm 101% certain that they nailed their research before making this movie. I'm Polynesian & I was surprised when Disney came out with this movie.
This is my first time to your channel and your editing is so funny. I love when you put your face on an in movie characters face 😂
That moment where she jumps into the water to get the heart back and the music soars with that Polynesian choir... it's just 🤌 perfect scoring
And thank you so much for your reaction!!!You're so funny 🤣😂I really enjoy it 🤗👍
@12:50 😂😂😂your cutaways or whatever you call these have been real on point lately
For Hamilton, honestly bro I’d check out your peers that’ve reacted to it and see how they found their way around copyright. Keep doing you fam. You killing it.
This is one of those movies I'd like to go back in time to the 30's and 40's to show to Walt and the animators.
I’ll bet Walt would have loved Moana. He was really into telling stories from varied cultures.
Disney really got a lot of the Polynesian culture and traditions right with this movie. Not only did the creators spend months researching the story of Maui and the time period of travel and the subsequent 1000 year break but all the voice actors (except for the chicken) are from Polynesian descent also.
Maui was so relatable in a sense to me, I had a toy of em and couldn’t help but listen to him sing. Music is my soul
"Do not tell me it's that pig"
*Hei Hei shows up*
"Oh hell naw, that's even worse!"
I cracked up haha
I loved the animation of the water and hair was so realistic in this movie, great commentary.
Everytime without fail when that scene comes on with Moana and her Grandmothers spirit I ugly cry while singing/shouting. I love this movie
Kakamora scene was a homage to Mad Max: Fury Road 🙌🏻
14:10 i remember when i watched this in my living room with my family, my older brother walked in at this part and watched for like 10 seconds and was like "is he singing about stealing her boat from her"
it was so hilarious that he picked up on that so fast
Mell, if you're watching animated stuff now, you NEED to watch The Last Unicorn. It has Sir Christopher Lee being his most awesome self as usual.
Your intro is literally my favorite thing ever and it makes me giggle every time
Grandma held the Heart of Te Fiti for Moana till she was old enough to go out on her mission.
Thankfully with lin manuel on recent disney projects moana, encanto and the upcoming live action little mermaid, the songs actually serve as tools of storytelling not time filling
i lose it everytime when you stick your face around on the characters 🤣🤣🤣 Love the reaction
Any soundtrack that Lin-Manuel Miranda touches is automatic gold. I love love love the music in Moana!!
I like the way you supported the fact that Moana would be Chief one day from the beginning but the more you saw how capable she actually is, the more you became a fan. She isn't a Mary Sue and I love that.
Please watch "Harry and the Hendersons" (1987)! It's one of my favorite childhood movies!
🍺
When you sing along is my fave part 😂
The little bit of real history in this movie is that for about a thousand years, the Polynesians did stop exploring, and no one exactly knows why. (I think it started around the first century BC, but it’s been a while since I read that factoid.) So this is the Disney fairytale of why they stopped, and then started again.
2:30 😂 I was thinking the same thing.
4:39, 5:31, 9:33 The splicing you in is the best.
Moana will have her own series coming to Disney Plus in the near future.
Great reaction as always Mellloooo. I started watching cause I found you cute, now I watch cause you funny as hellll 😂
Awwwee Thanks 😅
*Mello starts singing*
Me: You betta sang boy!!!! 🤣
You might not see it but Raya and The Last Dragon has such strong characters and GREAT animation
Trivia: Alan Tudyk, who is the voice of HeiHei the rooster, is also the voice of Villager #3. He's the one who asks 'Should we maybe just...cook him?'
That is hilarious 🤣
This is one of my favourite Disney movies. It's so fantastic!
I absolute love your channel. love your energy... love ur reactions... LOVE YA! got it :)
5 younger sisters?!? Dang😂
NGL I wonder if he has a bunch of older siblings too
Congrats on over 100k my man
Was not the biggest fan of this movie when I saw it in theaters but now it's one of my 4 yr old's favorite movies and it has grown to be one of my Disney favorites!!!
The grandma knew from the beginning, when Moana was a baby that she had a special calling in this world. Grandma motivated and encouraged Moanas bravery and strength
Also I love the message of the father apologizing/forgiving Moana. He kept her on the island to protect her but as she comes back to the island after saving Ta'kai he realizes her calling and he embraces her/forgives her
It's very rare in a Disney movie to see a parent say sorry and encourage their child to thrive. Finding Nemo and Moana are the best examples in Disney of the parent's fear holding back the child but the child stepping up for themselves and showing their bravery
the edits/inserts this vid were🔥😂
Fun fact the lady at the beginning of the movie that says thanks Moana you're doing great is in fact the voice actress for moana's mother
I feel you rocking out with this, the music goes hard
Another movie with great animated landscapes is the Good Dinosaur. I feel like it’s very underrated.
I was super close with my Nan, and the water. Moana is def. a favorite, but the scene with her grandma's stingray at the beginning and later meeting on the water gives me chills every time!
the editing on your videos is immaculate
Not me binging his entire channel. Your content is so good but please let me sleep lol been binging since 10pm, it's currently 11am
Aww I knew you we’re going to cry on the grandma scene. 🥺 lol
I love the memes you incorporate in your videos.
Everyone at work with kids was coming in singing these songs when it came out lol like darrel you good man? you been singing your welcome for two hours now
Bruh your editing be having me on the floor lol
Moana is easily my second favorite Disney movie of all time. Alice in Wonderland will always be first, at least as far as I can tell. This one has hands-down the best soundtrack tho. Every single song is endlessly singable, and just makes me happy. I love this movie so much. The first time I saw it, was the week my now fiancee came from Ohio to Florida to visit me, and we were sitting on the couch, watching it on her tablet, and eating pasta, lol. Just cuddled together, in each others' arms, just being together. Maybe that is coloring my opinion of it, but so be it. I love this movie so much.
17:05 The Merovingian: OK, you have some skill…
this was the first time the actually got an actress the age of the princess she was playing! and she is from hawaii! there is an awesome video of her hearing the news she got it! look it up :)
Don't know if you caught it, but when they did the overhead shot of Moana at the lagoon cliff, the island formed an outline of a sleeping woman.
The Grandma scenes get me Everytime 💔
I love seeing representation better than the “it sounds kinda foreign” Ukrainian choir used in Brother Bear. From the instrumentation of this movie to the range of Colombian styles in “Encanto,” I’m all about that representation. We all connect to basic storytelling and emotions, and I love seeing how those emotions reflect around the world.
I fell in love with this movie when I had a crush on a girl and we watched this haha… she gone but I still love this film and the song! Haha
I’m not gunna hold you…………I NEED DAT SHIRT!
I absolutely love seeing Disney represent more cultures. I know some don’t like it, but let’s be honest, it’s rich for them to say anything when they’ve been represented by Disney all along. We need representation, and the fact it brings fresh stories is a plus.
