I feel the exact same way about having studied literature so intensely in higher education that it has absolutely ruined any guilty pleasure reading! There is no way for me to NOT analyze what I am reading, especially when it comes to the actual syntax of the language... I tried to re-read the Hunger Games a few months ago for the nostalgia and just couldn't get through it because my brain has been poisoned by literary fiction 😂
I've never seen someone else mention China Miéville and I am SO THRILLED you have! His work is utter magic-strange and wonderful magic! Un Lun Dun is a great recommendation as well
Ahhhhh, I've been waiting so long to hear someone to speak on Sanderson like this... I read the Mistborn trilogy years ago and, even though I was a relatively inexperienced reader at the time, I felt the characters, dialogue and prose were abysmal. I've been baffled by the praise of him ever since. I really haven't seen anyone else who seems to agree with my belief that his books are lacking, UNTIL NOW!!! As always, hearing your thoughts and opinions is just *chefs kiss*. And meanwhile, I also LOVE Robin Hobb and Le Guin - same wavelength, baby! 😅
omg I LOVE the mistborn trilogy, to this day haven't been able to capture the experience i had reading it! truly i think the answer must just be the mystery of personal taste, and no author -not even brando sando- is objectively, universally "good"
I think people like him because he is easy to read. For me he’s the author equivalent of Love Island - its entertaining to an extent, but doesn’t take up much brain power, which obviously has its place… it’s why I read Emily Henry 😆
@@KristianaCembre Hahaha, totally, I do think his writing is easy to read. But unlike Love Island or other "guilty pleasure" type media, I feel like he's heavily praised, hence my confusion after greatly disliking Mistborn - I felt like the only naysayer! There's a pot for every lid I suppose, and clearly Brandon Sanderson is not the lid to my pot 😳
Your description of Pew reminded me of Beloved in Toni Morrison:s Beloved. She is an actual dead character but also highly symbolic on a supernatural level. I look forward to reading Pew, as I grew up in London but moved to the Carolinas here in the south of the USA about 25 years ago.
Well-articulated bad reviews are usually more interesting than good ones, so thanks for that. It's intriguing to hear different people's views as to how novels fail as well as how they succeed. Good balance. Thanks.
Love your book videos so much, I watched this one as I walked on the treadmill! Ur makeup hair and top r absolutely stunning in this video, I need to practice my eyeliner skills!
Oh China Mieville is great! Thank you so much for this review, almost nobody talks about him on Booktube! I personally have so much fun with Sanderson novels, I decided to ignore the flaws and just enjoy them! He also kind of cured my book snobbery so haha
UA-cam didn't give me a notification for this video so I'm late to the party but I have been looking forward to your final thoughts of Robin Hobb and I'm so so happy you loved Assassin's Apprentice! She's my favorite fantasy author and until I found NK Jemisin I had been in quite a long fantasy slump because nothing quite hit like Hobb. I think you will LOVE the "magic" system of this considering how much you enjoy Jemisin so im looking forward to your thoughts as you progress! Edit to add: I cannot get though a single Sanderson to save my life after so many recommendations from friends and it's very refreshing to see someone else who didn't vibe with them 😂
however you did the audio for this video, keep it FOREVER. also, can I make a request?? one of the first videos of yours I ever watched back in the day was the one where you reviewed the water cure, after which I immediately read the book and became fully obsessed with its weird, uncanny vibes. I saw Sophie Mackintosh has a new book out and I thought of you and how much id love to read it and hear your thoughts. maybe a book club option? ive heard its good!
I haven’t read The Way of Kings yet because I’m making my way through his earlier works, and this one is actually one of his latest works and hailed as his best so if you didn’t like that one then nothing else will work, although apparently the rest of the series only gets better and better. I loved Mistborn for the magic system and the familiarity of his work with fantasy with a slight twist here and there but if I had to go and analyse every single detail and theme he would definitely not be a favourite although I do love him :)
These past few months I've felt like you're reviews became a bit vauge and like you're maybe not as excited about your reading but I really enjoyed this video. I loved hearing all of the reviews, I don't know if it's because of the book club or whatever but I'm glad:)
Hi, Jess, I was very intrigued when you said that Psychoanalysis can be distracting in literature, I personally don’t know a lot about it, I was wondering if you recommend a text that discusses that?
Jessie, please read Flames by Robbie Arnott! I think it would be much more "you" thematically, and I absolutely adore it. it's a very special book about a very special part of the world.
I recently spent quite a bit of money and bought all the books in the In search of lost time series and now I regret it. I want to start reading them soon but now I'm less excited and slightly horrified....
I really enjoyed Mistborn by Sanderson but I think his portrayal of female characters could use some work in most of the books I’ve read. He seems to explore gender roles in the Way of Kings, at least in the 300 pages I’ve read, but lacks the nuance and depth I’d hope from that exploration. However, his work doesn’t read as glaringly misogynistic as that of Patrick Rothfuss to whom he’s often compared. Sanderson’s books are great for me right now with a seven month old - he doesn’t require too many working brain cells to enjoy his work. I finished the Southern Reach trilogy by Vandermeer and wow was that the wrong choice immediately postpartum. Hopefully in the next few months my baby will let me sleep a little more and I’ll be able to pick up some more challenging reads. Until then, it’s easy fantasy and sci-fi for me. Thanks for the video, Jess!
Finally someone recommends Robin Hobbs!! One of the best fantasy writers ever, I love her books. You are going to love the Liveship Traders trilogy, lots of pirates
Place your faith on Jesus. Jesus died so that you can have everlasting life. Jesus is the way the truth and the life. No one gets to the Father but by him. Trust Jesus. Repent. Call Out to Jesus Now Have a good day.
Omg you look especially gorgeous in this video ❤ i don't know why but the whole vibe and mood reminds me of the Edinburgh-era 😂😂
For me it's the colorful sweater, it reminded me of vlogtober 💜.
Completely agree I thought it was one of her old videos❤️🩹
the mic quality is just 👌
Lol I really like hearing you talk about a book you didn't like at all

Jess looking absolutely stunning. The Tartar Steppe is one of my favourite novels, not a word wasted.
You've articulated the problems with Sanderson's writing in a much better way than I ever could, well said 😀
Omg have you changed the audio? If so, it sounds amazing!!!
Yayyyy Hobb and Le Guin, two of my all time favorite authors!!
An hour! Delicious!
I've never seen someone else mention China Miéville and I am SO THRILLED you have! His work is utter magic-strange and wonderful magic! Un Lun Dun is a great recommendation as well
He very rarely seen on Booktube and he is such a great author! My favorite living fantasy author for sure!

I read Mieville's Perdido Street Station in January and I really enjoyed it. Looking forward to The Scar!
Thank you for your take on Sanderson, it’s refreshing. :)
thoroughly enjoyed these reviews with a few books added to my reading list
WHAT A TREAT! Thank you!
i would so love an “every book i own” video 😭

yay thanks for this
So happy you finally read Robin Hobb!!! I fished the Farseer Trilogy in December and loved it ❤❤❤❤ all time favorite read for me
Well-articulated bad reviews are usually more interesting than good ones, so thanks for that. It's intriguing to hear different people's views as to how novels fail as well as how they succeed. Good balance. Thanks.
Currently been reading Perdido Street station, Its visual storytelling and imagination just blow my mind off.

This reminded me that I need to read Pew!
Robin Hobb! What would I give to read the Realm of the Elderlings again for the first time.
52:19 & 58:00 lol - love it when you say it like it is Jess!
lol i also want to read in search of lost time purely for bragging rights. But since i havent started, i can back out now
Do you have a Spotify. I used to like the songs in your old Edinburgh vlogs.
The Joss Whedon version of much ado is worth seeing!

Great video! Where's your colourful jumper from? 😊
If wanting to begin some Le Guin, which novel would you suggest starting with?
Oh no, I have the In Search of Lost Time series on my shelf, lol I think I’ll have to suffer through them
I recently spent quite a bit of money and bought all the books in the In search of lost time series and now I regret it. I want to start reading them soon but now I'm less excited and slightly horrified....

Omg Robin Hobb ❤❤
Beautiful beauty life. To like to reading 📚

I totally agree with you about the way of kings haha, not very impressive and very boring.
The Sanderson girlies won’t be happy about this one
you've been busy
Feel the same about Sanderson. His ideas of race and gender are a big turnoff. I do think he does good worldbuilding though...
China's sooo overrated! He jus' comes across as a bad imitation of Mervyn Peake...
