Virgil unbound: Italian Alps ruin becomes dream budget home

  • When his wife inherited a ruined stable in Italy’s Orobic Alps, architect Alfredo Vanotti reenvisioned the space as a family home, reflecting local craftsmanship and his love of modern design.
    To daylight the home, Vanotti created a long skylight and four large windows facing the Valtellina Valley below. To create exterior walls that resembled the “dry stone” technique of the region’s traditional homes, he used local stone and a minimal amount of cement to hold it together.
    For the interior, Vanotti used reinforced concrete, along with natural larch and iron, to give the home a more modern feel. “Concrete is misused,” he explains. “It shouldn’t be perfect. The advantage of concrete: it shouldn’t be smooth, beautiful, precise.” The fireplace, sink, bidet, shower, and toilet are all custom-designed from unfinished concrete. To showcase the material’s imperfections, Vanotti chose to leave the material untreated and uncovered. “Concrete is a refined material. You don’t have to hide it.”
    With just a “small budget” and relying on help from his father, Vanotti transformed the ruin into a weekend home for his family over the course of five years. He designed the home from the ground up, including the kitchen sink. Everything was designed by the architect, including the concrete sink/bidet/toilet and fireplace. Nearly every detail was personalized, like the door/cupboard handles made from strips of leather.

      @William Webber i have to agree with the clown about the finishes. while the bugatti comparison demonstrates a fundamental lack of understanding about both the bugatti brand and design sensibilities in general.. it sure did look like corners were cut here. for budget reasons? perhaps. but i do feel like this is design - to a point. "the stools are meant for a mountain home if you don't like them sit on the other side" simple cushions could easily solve this problem, and they could be stored so as to not ruin the brutal aesthetic. certainly the concrete toilet and bidet is an impractical solution, and the kitchen tap is where i agree with the clown. definitely could've at least found a better looking nozzle and hose. i love the house overall, but this architect does seem a bit stubborn with his design which will make things difficult. his fireplace in his barn renovation for example.. he easily could've mounted one of the glass panes on a hinge, but no he reaches into the fire like someone going for that far bit of food past the cafeteria sneeze guard. and that glass is HOT. just little things. i think therein lies the issue. these are all little things, while the overall effect is so well achieved. very italian.

      @William Webber looooool I was paying complement to your use of the metaphor of Rembrant and using a comparison, unlucky for you you do not know of whether or not I "do nothing", I most definitely do, however if I, the architect or my family decides to present something on a public forum I would take the criticism, good or bad! and I have given MY opinion and it was both good and bad. My other comment says the outside and stairs in this house are beautiful. However some are lacking. What does seem to ring true, and also verified by your most recent comment is that you are merely just a keyboard warrior "clown". How about you come out of your house and have a proper debate and we will see if you use such language in public. Other than that you should probably mind your business as the initial comment has nothing to do with you, unless you are the man that built this house. and if you are take my opinion, live learn or take it with a pinch of salt. The sad thing for you is you have no humour. and thats your life. this is just one more comment for me and move on.

    Appart from the location which is stunning, and the building which wasn't his work, everything else is dysfunctional and dangerous in the case of the railing upstairs. He justifies certain decisions as design intentions but they are really just facade for lazyness and poor planning. It really gets on my nerves when I see irresponsibility in design, especially when it comes to safety. I mean it is enraging that he told his daughter to "be carefull" and just install a flimsy railing upstairs, unsupported and of such small cross section.

    • @ixlnxs
      @ixlnxs 6 років тому +15

      I'm not even sure about the location. Everything you see to the north is a natural park. Great view, but no shops, no entertainment and no freedom of movement: human beings are only welcome as polite guests.
      Everything to the south is heavily industrialized countryside. Not much overpriced coffee and avocado toast to be found there, either. Staple diet for a hipster like him.
      And then the house itself. Why was it a ruin? Perhaps because of the frequent forest fires and mudslides, which wiped several nearby villages off the map over the past few decades? Or was there another reason why his in-laws neglected the house?
      Once the novelty of long and dark Siberian winters begins to wear off, we'll find out.

    The bones of the structure, the walls floors, and stairs express the modernist esthetic: but the home lacks comfort...the toilets are a hardship, so are the dining room chairs. I could not bear a home without a soft, comfortable couch to curl up on, and comfortable, cushioned seating. This is modernism bordering on stoicism. The design is beautiful, the use of light is brilliant, the view is breathtaking.

    The fact that the fireplace leaves marks on the wooden floor isn't "cool because it shows it's used" it's just a design flaw and a huge hazard. this explains why for centuries fireplaces have had stone or metal pads inserted in the floors in front of them... the house wouldn't be too bad if the guy wasn't this pretentious.

      this man is very immature and built his family an unsafe uncomfortable house, "handles" are uncomfortable to use, countertops have holes in them so hard to clean, same with other surfaces, no railing on the stairs, loft and next to a bedroom door, master and kids bedroom right next to each other with the top open so no privacy at all, uncomfortable chairs with the edges of chairs being sharp, i didn't see any couches or a fireplace that is functional either, the kitchen is an uncomfortable disappointment and the storage boxes do not have gliders so they don't slide in or out easily.... very poorly designed all around.

    As an owner, hands-on renovator of multiple projects over my life time (thanks Dad for giving me the bug), I like most just have to shake my head over the many flaws built into this house. I love the location though. Too bad the stairs are deadly, for adults and kids. The toilets! enough said about them. And yes concrete is cheap, and great! Duh? The under the stairs drawers are too deep and need a set of runners to operate smoothly. It's like a total beginner built this place, Yikes!

      The under-stairs drawers are what actually surprised me the most about this - after the open loft and stairs (although in fairness, one does see open stairs shockingly frequently in European designs). As an architect, he *should* have the training to have dealt with the storage drawers much more effectively. It's really not that difficult, nor would it have added noticeably to the overall cost of the place.

      This is when someone is trying too hard. It could have been so beautiful. The stairs don’t bother me too badly. But a glass piece could have been used as a rail upstairs with the same effect. Also hated how close the bedrooms were together and soooooo small. And no privacy with that gap up top. The bathroom? Worst ever seen. I would rather get a bucket to pee in.

    Most accidents happen in the home. Having an accident in this home would be fatal. The design choices in this place are just bizarre. Hard surfaces that won't shatter or give in a place that is usually wet, unfinished wood (is it even sanded?) as flooring, railing that can't even be called that, huge picture window at bed height in a child's room (hope she never jumps on the bed!). open fire place with no screen or protection for the wooden floor, fuse box in the middle of drying wood, and probably more I just didn't see. Also, I don't know what local craftsmanship the description is talking about.

      Kids generally don't have the falling accidents that you're imagining. And imagining is the right word. Kids will just as likely fall from a tree or off balustrade after climbing on it. But they have way more spatial sense and balance than clumsy adults do.

    • @DiscoFang
      @DiscoFang 6 років тому

      And... beds are almost always at window height, it's just the way things are but you seem not to have noticed. Breaker boxes (that's what that was, not a fuse box) are just as likely to be installed in timber framing with timber cladding in a traditional house, but even considering that, they aren't generally where fires start. You should recognise when your concern comes from fear of the unknown, not from actual knowledge.

  • @TomHofmann
    @TomHofmann 4 роки тому +36

    It's an interesting house from a design exploration perspective. The overall design of the house is great. It nicely follows a traditional look from the outside but still takes in the views.
    I do think though some of the details are a bit questionable. Those metal stairs are a death trap. The toilet as others have pointed out will have hygiene problems. The details in the kitchen feel like they are designed by someone that doesn't cook. The wooden draws under the stairs without tracks will get stuck as the wood expands over time. The shower will flood every time. Chopping wood inside the house is great if you get your wood from a design shop but chopping wood that comes for the real world is usually a messy affair. The only heating seems to be from the fire place... yet there is no fire protection on the floor. This means you can never leave it unattended or get a big enough fire going to heat the house.

    Interesting tour, although I wish he had spoken less about aesthetics and more about the water and power systems of the house. While I like his choice of materials and the views from the site are incomparable, there was much about it that seemed impractical for family use. As a mom, I saw him closing doors with his palm (dirt) covering an oven with fabric and open fireplace without a stone floor/hearth (fire hazard), square, flat seats for rounded human bottoms, rough concrete surfaces for places where bacteria collects (toilets and kitchen counters), no railings for stairs or balcony (toddler danger) and no privacy in the bedrooms (no matter how great the light, I do like private time with my husband to be...well, private). It's his house, and as people have commented, a man's entitled to design his own house as he sees fit. I just didn't see many ideas I can use myself. Even those window eave lights, which at first I liked. My husband pointed out that they may actually obscure those wonderful mountain views at night.
    Still, thanks for posting. I love seeing how various designers are at least attempting to build economically while preserving a beautiful design aesthetic. I just need more practical solutions for my family's living.

    A "budget" home with everything done in concrete which is one of the most expensive building materials.

  • @Olli4
    @Olli4 7 років тому +30

    Most of the times I see "budget" mentioned in the context of homes / architecture / design, there is not even a clue as to what that "budget" would be. Why put it there in the first place? Budget means something completely different for everybody, and although prices for building and contracting are different all around the world and a lot depends on how much labour you do yourself... it would at least be nice to have some sort of guideline number, when using the term "budget".

    • @ingeleonora-denouden6222
      @ingeleonora-denouden6222 7 років тому +3

      Olli4 it is probably their budget, the money they wanted to spend on their vacation home in the mountains. This spot being inherited ... that is pure luck!

    • @BlutigerFuchs
      @BlutigerFuchs 7 років тому +5

      I associate budget with a fixed amount of money. A million euro house could also be mentioned as a budget project, however I see more videos with budget in its headline, when it's about someone who is short on cash. He doesn't even mention the amount of money, therefore budget is a useless input in the headline.

      I guess that anytime the word 'budget' falls on this channel they mean building a house for at least half of what a traditional house would cost that is build by someone else. But you are right, budget can mean a lot of different things..

    • @ixlnxs
      @ixlnxs 6 років тому +2

      Glad you mentioned that! I watched this for over 11 minutes before it dawned upon me that no budget would be mentioned. I'm not planning on building anything in the Alps, but it would have been interesting.

    Stunning house. I love the minimalist approach. I would change toilet and keep it porcelain. Use concrete to make shower protection. Use proper guards around stairs and overhang. Also place a slab of concrete in front of fire place to protect wood. Then bring in some couches not extravagant.

    I have to say thanks to Kirsten Dirksen for filming all these clever and innovative homes. What a lot of effort you have gone to! This architect is skilled and articulate, and his juxtaposition of materials is inspired - but at the end of the video I still did not feel this home would be that comfortable to live in, even as a summer house. It's not just the obvious things like a concrete toilet (!) and no rails on the stairs. For me I think it is just too rectilinear, but he's almost built a perfect space!

    "This is a table of my own design" Hmm, yeah that's in fact a table, but what do you mean of your design? You put some wood on four metalic legs. It's called a table dude! Very lazy designs presented in a pretentious way. It's very nice for an isolated shed, but let's not make it more than it is. Bathrooms are disgusting and look like prison bathrooms.

    Where are the solar panels as there are no power poles near there, the water heater, the battery bank, the pressure tank and the well? Those would have been nice to be included as it was a gorgeous design.

    • @JaniceHope
      @JaniceHope 7 років тому +4

      In some regions of the world (mostly the developed ones) you will not find power poles because power cables except for the big ass high power lines are put underneath the surface. Also tankless water heaters and good water pressure provided by the municipality are a thing -- even in the alps.

    The bathroom is a no go. Horrible fixings. He should have went with the traditional style of toilets. In addition, the no-handle staircase to the loft seems very dangerous..especially for the kids. Otherwise, everything else seems livable. I only like the exterior of the house and windows.

    • @markm0000
      @markm0000 7 років тому +7

      I would have put a burlap fence with hidden steel rods for support. Have that run up into the loft area. That would have really tied the house together and made it safe for kids. The handrail is stupid and you can see it's already bent out of shape from someone falling on it. Who knows how many kids and visitors have fallen off that.

    • @reflexology52welsh48
      @reflexology52welsh48 7 років тому +13

      Mark M I think the rod has bent, because it is so long and heavy, with nothing to support the middle. It does worry me however, because as many people, who are now confined to wheelchairs can tell you, accidents DO happen when safety precautions are ignored! Not a fan of the bathroom or lack of railing, but everything else is awesome!

    concrete toilet and bidet and no parapet. The search for beauty worsens comfort, healthiness (and safety). Totally illogical and meaningless, like the times in which we live. The gentleman who speaks also seems proud of the crap he made. A demonstration of the fact that the search for originality at all costs does not lead to anything.

  •  7 років тому +30

    TBH, it seems like a watered-down brutalism. Cool for concept, but IMHO it has many design flaws, and I personally I find it not aestethically pleasant albeit I found good ideas, like the metal stairs.
