I think EMG makes chords sound so balanced, full, and consistent. With passives i feel like i have to play perfectly all the time and if i get tired while playing the sound will suffer and small mistakes will creep through whereas EMG allows more consistency. But they both sound good i think everyone should have both. At the end of the day its all about what sounds good to the ear and being creative with each pickups advantages. Awesome video!
I have a luke 2 and luke 3, I always thought they were both active pickups but apparently the luke 3 has passive pickups and the battery pack is just for the boost and same with my Petrucci guitars
Thanks for this video JK. I purchased a Harley Benton Fusion Pro HSH. What can I do to maximize the stock pickups for the best sound possible? I have lots of EQ from several pedals to potentially shape the tone. Also, HB has some active pickup equipped guitars. Have you tried them?
No I have not tried the HB active pups...My only experience with active pups are with EMGs. EQs and compressors can only do so much. A great pickup is 3/4 the battle won🤓✌
The Ernie Ball/Musicman Luke2 sounds amazing! Your playing is very nice too ;-) I regularly see you playing in the Harley Benton facebook group and I always enjoy it :-) subscribed
I recently bought my girlfriend a cheap bass because she has been learning on my bass. I paid $1200 for mine 20 years ago. Her one cost $320 & sounds , feels just as good . if not better. Mine is passive. Hers is Active. It does make a big difference. I use a DI box for recording or just playing. My Missus doesn't need that. Just for the record. My Bass is a Yamaha RBX 460 - very nice slap Bass. My girls Bass is a J&D Luthiers with active pickups & it's just as good. It even has more bass tone than mine through the same amp. I think active is good even though I never used any of them till now. Cheers Y'All.
Lowering the pickup will more or less have less gain output from your guitar to your amp/effects. Tones will only change slightly when you it passes effects like a distortion pedal. Most of the time the Tones will not be affected greatly. Hope this helps :) ✌
I really wanted that THOMAN guitar but they stitched me up with a crap second hand guitar Deangelico brand . Don’t wana risk buying from them again Shame because I had high hopes from them ! Gutted
Not sure , it was scratched pick up selector doesn’t work . Bent neck , would not even play after tuning, marks on neck and fret board . Sharp unfinished high frets causing buzz as uneven .. I would say it’s the worst guitar I’ve ever had - never but from online again especially THOMAN
Awww man. I'm so sorry to hear that. I know exactly how to you feel. But so far for me, I'm satisfied with thomann's services. I had a tube Mic which arrived defective and they sent a new Mic without me sending back the defective Mic. However I did sent them video and audio proof of the defect.
I’m late to your channel. All I’m going to say is that I love your humble, informative takes on all things guitar 🎸. Keep it coming!

+burnout510 spot on observation! Glad you enjoyed the video ✌️
Really tasty licks and an enjoyable playing, and your calmness in speaking does the rest.. 12 minutes very well spent!! Thanks
Thank you so much El! ✌️😊
How I enjoy your videos! Thanks Jonathan! You're such a nice guy.
Thank you Jos✌️🤓
Best description I've heard for passive is, more dynamic than the active. The passive reacts more to subtle variations of the strings(dynamically).
Yes they do! I love passive guitars because of that.. It brings outs the subtleties of your playing. 😊✌️
Thanks for putting this out there

Thats great!!✌♥
Thanx Jonathan.
thanks for the advaice!! but you forgot, that you can combine the active and pasive pickups!!! i have combine them, and my guitar sounds amazing
Yep!!! Thats the way to go too!!! But sometimes you will find volume changes between the pickups :)
Would lowering the loud pickup fix the difference in volume? Or would this change the tone?
