Good question and comment. Its actually Ryan in this video. SmoothStar always recommends helmets. But if you look at the riding they are doing, it is nothing like normal skateboarding. They are showing body movement - compression/extension in surfing. They are not moving fast at all - they are not going on any jumps. So the risk in riding a SmoothStar is a lot less - you can simulate the surf feel on land and do not have to ride at high speeds.

Never heard a surf coach that says this. SmoothStar is always preferred because it is more responsive to body movement. If you can find a surf coach that has tried both and doesn't prefer SmoothStar for surf simulation, we'll send you a free board. The guy at How to Rip have tried it and jumped off it straight away.
@@danielneethling757 fantastic for cruising the streets and getting from A - B. However, for surfing it has a restricted turning radius and that restricts "progressive surf turns". SmoothStar is not fashion, it is all about surf functionality.
@@vadimmiloserdov4962 Never heard of "slider". I use a carver, turns very well but you want to be able to make the tail slide anyway like you would do carving on a wave. For that you need to relief weight on the back putting it foward and use your back foot to slide the tail, helped by upper body movement. So smooth star or carver it's the same to be honest
@@HowtoRip no, I surf at some time already (the board on my pic was shaped and glassed by me). I think that i was naturally goofy, but i forced myself to be regular in surf due to bad advise :'( . Years after I learned to surf I got a skate, and it was impossible for me to ride it as regular, but with my left foot behind was simple
Unfortunately the issue of having a opposite stances in surf and skate is quite normal. SmoothStar first got this issue about 9 years ago. It was very strange and we thought the best solution was to speak to a surf coach and ask for advice. Unfortunately the coaches that we spoke to didn’t have much of a solution except don’t worry about it and let the student just have fun. Another 6 months later at a Junior surf competition in Australia had this issue. He maturely released that his only way to improve his surfing using SmoothStar was to skate the same way he surfed. He couldn’t “pop-up” on his surfboard, it just felt too weird. So he forced himself to ride SmoothStar the same way he surfed. He was amazed how quickly he was able to change over from regular skater to Goofy on SmoothStar. He said it was because SmoothStar felt so much like surfing so it was just easier. 6 months later, he said he couldn’t ride regular skating anymore, he had converted completely and never looked back. The mother took the advice off the 11 year old and reported that it only took her son just under a week of riding SmoothStar, he didn’t like it at first but even her child was a amazed how quickly he converted over. We later found out that even some professional surfers have the same issue. Even 2014/2018 World Champion Gabriel Medina even skates natural and surfs goofy. So if it happens to World Champions, it can happen to anyone. So in summary, the advice that we give surfers with this issue: Force yourself to ride the same stance as your surf. You will find it easier to fix your SmoothStar skate stance rather than your surf because of the pop-up. Ride your SmoothStar for 2 weeks everyday for minimum 30 minutes. SmoothStar have given this advice many times since they first came across it 9 years ago. Surfers are amazed themselves how quickly they transition over. It is mainly due to one part of the body being stronger than the other, it is just a matter of retraining the brain. The habit normally occurs at a very young age when kids first skated. Then it became the normal thing to do.
Nice boards but pricey $360 ish... you can also throw a waterborne (surf adapter-$60) on a cheaper board and have good results but if you have the dough, hey why not...
$360AUD NOT 360USD. There are plenty of cheep choices if you want to just want to cruise around but if you want to improve and progress your surfing, SmoothStar is always preferred by surf coaches. If you want the closest feel to surfing, there is no comparison. So in answer to your question, you need the spring in the front turning mechanism as this simulates the steepness of the wave when you release from a turn. If you don't use a spring in the engineering, it is just a wiggle board.

How much do I loosen the trucks
You don't need to on these boards
Nice video
can you buy the Smoothstar in the USA?
Email Smoothstar via their website P R, they will have a better idea!
P R yes! I bought one and had it shipped to the states
Hey guys can you do a video on paddling out to get through bigger waves and finding channels. Ty
We have alot of videos on these topics Ian, check them out!
What is the name of the skateboard???What type?
SmoothStar, we rode the Holey Toledo and #77 models!
Got some tough feet to be on grio tape without shoes
*Too bad they don't sell smoothstars in the USA*
Ho Stevie! Get a Surfskate. They are the same if not better!
@@gavinalexander501 Completely different product. Surfskate are not recommended for surfing by coaches.
Well that depends on the surf coach you ask right!
@@ajj4483 Not all surf coaches have access to SmoothStar. Especially ones in the USA. Those that have access, typically choose SmoothStar for surf training. We understand some fans have loyalty to certain brands and that is totally fine.
Ok- so I bought myself a Smoothstar Toledo 77 and I have to say it’s sooo much better than the surfskate that I have! Way more realistic ; much smoother and generally much better!,
ive got the swelltech surfskate, ive spent heaps of time on it on the local velodrome- you can get going pretty quick pumping around and do your turns on an actual face. also hopping in the bowl at the skate park is better than those flatter ramps. i just start at the bottom because im too pussy to drop in and work my way up- you get going real fast on these things
Yeah they are fun for sure!
can a normal cruiser skate help my surfing , im a beginner surfer . been a year and few month now , dropped to a 6.4 and can catch 3 out of 5 waves on a good day ... cant afford a surf skate .. thanks for your help
It won't feel as close to surfing as SmoothStar, but it definitely won't hurt! Great work, keep it up!
How loose should I tighten the trucks
You won't need to with the SmoothStar!
This looks like a great training tool, though I'm not sure I'll get away with it as a man in his 40's in middle of the UK!
Of course you can Simon, why not!
I am older :-). I rented this wknd a smoothstar and I managed to ride it. We have mountains, but no sea. Therefore, I‘m looking for a alternative to our CityWave :-) @Simon Wyndham: You can do it!
@How to Rip: Witch board do you recommend. When going for 32.5″ Johanne Defay and when it is better to go for the 34″ Toledo 77 model?
I purchased now the 32.5’ model Johanne Defay Modell and I tried also to skate in the pool at the local skatepark. Ha, ha, ... I went very early to keep the level of embarrassment as low as possible. Apparently there were other beginners with the same idea :-).
Why not mate I do and I'm 47 just buy one you won't regret it you can always go out early or late
The funny part is that I'm the only one in America with a smooth star!!!! I heard they might come to the US in 2020 but until then, I'm the unique one😁
Nice work Kai!
I’ve got one in America as well!
@@christopherharrell8733 sick bra!!! The one of a kinds😂
Yewwwwww I need to buy one 🤙🏼
Do it! So worth it Eamon Shields
Hello, i am having trouble knowing when to pop up on the wave, i seem to pop up and to the goes to fast, or i try to pop up and the wave scoops and i jist fall then get pounded, so i never cat h any waves, could you please make a video on this thanks🤙🏽😊
shelly Thumb keep trying, you’ll get the timing right! It always depends on the conditions of the day. Watch where people are taking off and what they do to be successful. Remember, every wipeout is a lesson! Have fun.
@@nicelydone8017 thank you!
Shelly Thumb, we have several videos that will help with this :)
@@HowtoRip what are the titles?
Isnt the Swelltech surfskate better than the SmoothStar?
The SmoothStar is our favourite by far!
@@SmoothStarSurf Just out of curiosity what do you think gives you guys the edge over Carver ? Same price but whats the difference
@@danielneethling757 fantastic for cruising the streets and getting from A - B. However, for surfing it has a restricted turning radius and that restricts "progressive surf turns". SmoothStar is not fashion, it is all about surf functionality.
You guys have convinced my to buy a smoothstar
would you recomment this felipe toledo #77 model SmoothStar also for a beginner to intermediate surfer?
Absolutely, it is very user friendly
Everyone: *spends hours in the water to fast track surfing success*
Me: *turned up the playback speed from normal to 1.5x*
Smooth star v carver v slider
Which is better for training? 🤔
That's my local skate park
10% riding I WISH
Great video! But what if you are a weirdo that's regular on a surfboard, but goofy on a skate??
Can't say I have heard of this before. Are you new to surfing? I would try and stick with one, whichever feels more comfortable.
But I will try to learn as regular on skate, the damage is already done after all hahaha
Wow that is weird
So in summary, the advice that we give surfers with this issue:
Force yourself to ride the same stance as your surf.
Problem is Smoothstars are COMPLETELY impossible to comeby in the US&A , Its a TOTALLY Carver dominated market!!!
Just email us Dolby and we will try to help you. support@smoothstar.com.au
Skateboarding has always been cross training for surfing, these gimmicks never cease
Il nome!
Dunno looks like a marketing video
With both arms open? Not really!
Nice boards but pricey $360 ish... you can also throw a waterborne (surf adapter-$60) on a cheaper board and have good results but if you have the dough, hey why not...
You pay for quality David!
SmoothStarSurf There ya go, all other skateboards are basically just wiggleboards. 🙄
I just have a penny board. Hope that will work too😂
Did it?
