Fishing unknown waters can be really frustrating at times, but it really puts you to the test and is super rewarding when you figure out the fish. Great video Gene.
Hey @Flukemaster! I fish these pools of the Mississippi river and I gotta tell ya one of the first things you said about largemouth not liking current is just not true about these fish. Recently thats all they have been relating to is current or right next to it. Theres a lot of places along the mississippi that look like a lake fishermans ideal set up but will be a dead sea most of the time especially during summer or just pike central. you can still catch em there but its much tougher than it will be closer to the main channels or areas that have a backwater that flows into a calm flat. Great video ether way! Rocks or rock walls that extend into the water are also key areas for large mouth and smallies.
Night fishing video is something we need. Haven't seen one and would like one. I'm a third shifter and don't get to afternoon fish. I hear night fishing can be good. Try one of those. Some of us would enjoy that
It's funny you say that. I'm working on getting the boat set up for a night video. YoloTec has some new stuff you that make it so I can light up the boat and film at the same time. I just hope it works out.
Gene, I watched this vid on my Roku but sadly you can't like a vid on that platform. So I opened it up on my iphone and you got a big like because this video is what I love about your vids man. Dissecting the water, watching the wheels turn. Didn't matter to me had you caught a fish or not. Great stuff bud.
Love the channel and great tips. One thing. I do not know how practical it would be but when showing where you target on your cast I would love to see maybe an arrow or pointer overlay on the screen so we can see exactly where you try and hit. Some times you can see where the bait hits but most of the time not.
Gene that camera angle at 430 in the video is perfect. Please use this more when you're explaining techniques I've never seen it before now and I wish every one would use it to teach.
You ever come there again I'd love to have a chance of meeting you and possibly learn some things first hand from you love the videos been watching almost daily for a little over the past month love what you do
Brother I fished the Mississippi today and good lord I was absolutely lost. Went to a spot called chain of rocks, supposed to be sauger and striper there. The current was ripping over these rocks and making rapids... fouled everything I threw cranking wise and drifted everything jig wise
Gene, having the camera actually record you pitching to specific areas was really a very good idea and gives clearly depicts what you are saying.... Especially with the rear boat cam looking forward!! I think you should do that more often (personal preference of course).. Other fishing vids don't do that, and I think it's a much better communication tool when narrating.... Just saying.... Thank you for the great fishing tips...!
I try to do that when it's important to the topic of the video. If I'm casting into open what it's not that important because it doesn't show anything, but if I'm casting to targets I try to always show it.
great video Mr. Flukemaster. when you mentioned about largemouth not liking current, I somewhat disagree. I live near the California Delta and sometimes, those darn fish just want to setup super close to the current. I even caught some from the current itself with cranking. I don't know, every fish have their own way of thinking. we just gotta appeal to their weird nature sometimes haha 😁🎣
Same here. Well close anyways wish I would have known he was up here and would have done a little meet up or something. Would have been awesome to meet him
I was up at Lake Geneva for a MTB event and wanted to head over to the Alumacraft offices in Minnesota. I hand a day in between so I stopped in Lacrosse to try my luck on the Mississippi.
Thanks for putting your vids up. Such goods stuff. Since this was on a muddy river, I'd like to know more about how you choose lure colors for clear, stained, or muddy water. Would be a good video idea. Keep them good!
I remember back 10 years ago when I moved to the Gulf Coast. My uncle took me fishing out on a pier. He had 2 spare rods one which looks really "flashy" yet refined and one that just looked weird and didn't feel right. After a few trips he asked me which one did I prefer told him the "flashy" one and he asked why. I said it felt like a better rod/reel. He asked me my definition of better and I told him I liked the action of the rod more and the reel felt smoother. He asked me which one I thought was more expensive and I told him the same one. He said that one cost $89 and I laughed and said I knew it was better. He told me the other one he paid $300 for between the rod and reel and said he's had that for 15 years. Told me the other one gets replaced every 1-2 years because they wear out fast. Don't judge everything based off appearance.
I don't use rods larger than 7'1". My current frog rod is a 7'1" omen black 2 heavy. I do a lot of shore fishing if not in my canoe so I like the smaller rods for the tighter spots.
Another great video! Really helps to have the camera show where you are casting to and the action. Another help would be if you show closeup of the lure and it's setup, i.e., the creature bait and weight used. Thanks again.
loved how you turned the camera and picked apart what you were flipping to. Really put a visual to the phrase "look for anything different". Great video as always! If you could do a video on Caddo Lake in northwest Louisiana that would be great... haha
That's the number one thing I do on my lake is listen for bluegills popping. The more the better. It always seems that the areas with the most pops I catch the most bass. If I only hear a few I only spend maybe 15minutes. Then i move on to the next spot.
Ok Gene I've got a question that yuou may have some insight on. I'm a Revo guy but I'm starting to look into getting a couple of 13fishing reels to see if I like them. My concern is there's a big difference in the amount of bearings between the 2 at the same price point. Revo will have 11 13fishing will have 6 or 7. Would that make it any less smooth?
This one is awesome man - I really enjoy watching you go out and explore - I think this is something the scares a lot of us anglers. How do we search new water - if we only have a day to fish do we go to where we're comfortable or GET OUT? I'd say get out, and your advice her is great. Thank you. Go exploring people!
You're telling me. I hate to travel for a long time. I was gone for nearly three weeks and I felt like such a slacker. That's OK. Schools back in and I've got a lot more freedom to bust out some content.
Awesome, love all of your vids...I'm from NC and the fishing has been so tough the last month...guess it's to be expected when the water temp is 94 degrees...keep up the great work
Taking your boat all over the place, what's your concern on zebra mussels? Especially getting up in Wisconsin, I know they're having issues with them up there.
Hey Gene. I looked for this rod at tackle warehouse. The 6' 5" heavy rod has a 12 1/2" handle. I want a shorter handle to fish from my kayak. I'm tired of the butt of the rod rubbing my pfd all the time. Where's the 8" handled one?
Hey Gene, Great video. How would you flip and pitch from a kayak? I have a sit inside so theres even less room to work with than a sit on top. I find it difficult to get a proper pendulum from the seated position in my yak. Thanks!
Can u do a best muddy water all year round rig talking 8 inch vis and around 5 to 12 feet of water never been able to catch much at this lake but I always hear guys say it is such a great bass lake but never had a day on it where I have fought more than two bass and both only 16 inches because size limit at this lake is 18 inch please help love the vids keep them up and go bulldogs
Nice job Gene! The river can be a frustrating place just to navigate for someone that hasnt been there before. The LMB on the river dont like current but love moving water. I make my own swim jigs that come through the slop that work well. What day was this? I was down there fishing on Monday.
I can't do meet ups anymore. The death threats I got after that misleading Googan video last fall put a stop to them. I now have to be careful announcing where I'm going to be.
One thing I noticed when you switched sides is that the wind is now at your back blowing into the banks in front of you....could this be why you see all the blue gills and bait fish
It only started blowing after I got there. It got stronger after the video and eventually blew all that muddy water into the grass and the bite stopped.
I grew up around St Paul, Minn. but moved to So CaL before I really got into fishing like I am Now! I currently live in PA and I am using your Vids to help me crack the bass Here and in NJ
You are going to need on that can handle the stress that heavy braid can put on it. If you are worried about cost I'd go with the 13 Fishing Inception Reel in 8.1:1. It can handle it and it has enough drag to pull them out of the thickest stuff.
Hi Flukemaster! I just got into bass fishing last year and I already have 2 bait-casters. And I have one that I'm not quite sure what it's purpose is. the rod is a Abu Garcia vendetta, it's a 7'0" Medium Fast action rod, and the lure weight is 1/4 to 5/8 oz. just was wondering what I would use it for and what to through on it? Thanks! Btw awesome video!!
Rusty Redfearn yes buzzbait and spook are top water baits, but he also mentioned 1/4 oz jigs, spinnerbaits, and large square bills. Just try different baits in the weight range and see what works.
Gene I got a quick question , I have a concept A and C and an inception but for whatever reason the inception feels the smoothest and I don't know why , I have braid on the A and C and flourocarbon on the inception. Could It be that the A and C i got are not up to the standard ? They're all really smooth reels but for whatever reason the inception feels better.
Flukemaster it is probably is the line,it felt great out of the box but once I started fishing it, it felt different. thanks for clearing that up and responding so fast. Love your vids btw !
just a question about the frog rod, i obviously havent seen your rod next to a typical 7 foot or 7' 3" froggin rod, but wouldnt the short butt on yours put the reel about the same distance from the tip of thw rod as the 7 footers with a longer butt? Essentially negating the benefit that you talked about with increased ease of walking?
+cantwine e Nope. In your analysis the the handle of the 7'rod would have to be another 7 inches long making it a 15 inch handle. Nobody makes a frog rod with that long of a handle and most dedicated frog rods are 7'6" and longer. That would be a 21" handle.
Flukemaster I gotcha, thanks for the explanation! The rod I use for throwing frogs is only 7, and i still cant move my hand very much without causing large movements of the frog. Are yours available to purchase yet? or do you have a release date? I live in soddy daisy tennessee and fish the chick, hope to run into you one day!
Love how you teach fishing instead of like the rest of these channels you just watch them fish.
+Brian McAfee thanks Brian
Brian McAfee I totally agree, that's why he is one of my favorites
The over the shoulder view of you picking targets is awesome. Use that more.
Gaven its a tough river to fish but definitely one of the most fun rivers
Fished that for 5 years, never had a bad day. Frogs work everywhere and the square bills near cover. Great video
Thanks Gene! Always a pleasure..
Ty for supporting spec ops survivors!
Over the shoulder view is awesome. More!!!
Thanks man. I got a new attachment that allows me to swivel my GoPro.
Gene, I live in La Crosse! Super cool that you were here fishing the Mississippi. I fish it all the time.
It's a beautiful area, I didn't like all the no wake zones though. LOL
Kellan Doberstein I’m also from lacrosse I love fishing the Mississippi
Love watching you fish Fluke and you have taught me a lot. Thanks far all you do.
Appreciate-chya!
Thanks Rob.
You are my "go-to" for videos. Keep em coming!
Happy to see you made it up to Wisconsin!
It's a beautiful state.
Night fishing video is something we need. Haven't seen one and would like one. I'm a third shifter and don't get to afternoon fish. I hear night fishing can be good. Try one of those. Some of us would enjoy that

Flukemaster sweetness. Lacrosse is only 45 minutes away from me so I seen la Crosse and was like holy shit lol.
for sure!! Can't wait to see that!
Wow really surprised more people don’t use that over the shoulder view ! Absolute game changer!!
Glad to see your back!
Thank you for all the tips. Oh and deployment entertainment!
Awesome to see you made a video right here in my hometown!
Thanks man. I really appreciate it.
I don't feel comfortable watching you fish without the Bulldogs hat.
JC Outdoors just know its a change for a cause he'll go back to the bulldogs.
Y'all ain't right. LOL
I have been trying all that you talk about and doing better. I still have no luck with jigs. Come down to TX and show me how to fish a jig.
Great video Gene! Congrats on the first Mississippi River bass!
Thanks man.
Best in the business. Love the vids. Keep doing what you do Flukemaster!
Thanks Sammy
Great job master and never stop teaching us🎣✌️
Thanks Miguel
Perfect time for this video I have a tournament at a space I'm not familiar with this weekend
Thank you for a great video. Wonderfully educational and fun to watch as well. Keep them coming!👍
Thanks Larry
Love this! In WI! Real practical stuff too.
Thanks Joseph
Pitching skills on point!!!

I'll see what I can do.
This was one of the best videos I've watched, I like these videos
Great video Gene! It was awesome to see how you break it down step by step. Even the slightest of changes could be key. 👍Keep them coming buddy.
Thanks man.
Sweet video Gene like always I like to see the informative approach of your videos
Gene that camera angle at 430 in the video is perfect. Please use this more when you're explaining techniques I've never seen it before now and I wish every one would use it to teach.
Thanks Robert. I will try to use it when there are targets to see. If I'm casting to open water it won't show much.
You ever come there again I'd love to have a chance of meeting you and possibly learn some things first hand from you love the videos been watching almost daily for a little over the past month love what you do
That was a fantastically informative video. Thanks fluke!
Brother I fished the Mississippi today and good lord I was absolutely lost. Went to a spot called chain of rocks, supposed to be sauger and striper there. The current was ripping over these rocks and making rapids... fouled everything I threw cranking wise and drifted everything jig wise

Another great video. Love to hear your thought process!

Great video Gene as always
Thanks John
Awesome Gene. That's home right there for me. What brings you up here to the Northwoods, and how long are you up here for?
home for me too! What brings ya up here to these parts.
Same here. Well close anyways wish I would have known he was up here and would have done a little meet up or something. Would have been awesome to meet him
I was up at Lake Geneva for a MTB event and wanted to head over to the Alumacraft offices in Minnesota. I hand a day in between so I stopped in Lacrosse to try my luck on the Mississippi.

top toad is sooo underrated
They really are!

Are you still in Wisconsin? You should definitely hit up Pewaukee Lake or Big Green Lake!
Hey Gene, you didn't make mention of weight size with flipping. What size do you typically flip with. Just curious.
Good video. Thanks for the tips.
I live in lacrosse wi! Big bass tournament goin on right now
nice, love the video always enjoy the tips! How do you like the new boat?
So far I love it. The Minn Kota Ultrex and the Power Poles are going to spoil me though.
That's the number one thing I do on my lake is listen for bluegills popping. The more the better. It always seems that the areas with the most pops I catch the most bass. If I only hear a few I only spend maybe 15minutes. Then i move on to the next spot.
All that grass reminds me of guntersville.
Love your channel!

The hat is different. But I like it and I like the cause 👍🏻
good to see you back, a week between vids was way too long :)
You're telling me. I hate to travel for a long time. I was gone for nearly three weeks and I felt like such a slacker. That's OK. Schools back in and I've got a lot more freedom to bust out some content.
Awesome, love all of your vids...I'm from NC and the fishing has been so tough the last month...guess it's to be expected when the water temp is 94 degrees...keep up the great work
Awesome content!! Thanks jean! Also, trying a new kinda croc out?😂
Good observation bro.
love the vid man! That was very helpful
As always Kyle. Thanks my friend.
great video do you have any pike videos
Nope. We don't have them down here where I live.
Looks like Seminole right now except the pads on the nole are 4x bigger and thicker
I love top water fishing too. This morning I caught a pike on a whopper plopper.
King Kong I just caught one last night on the bone 130 plopper what size was your pike
Man wish I would have known you were in lacrosse. That's 45 mins from me would have loved to meet you
Great video bother. I am actually looking to fish there on my way home to Chicago on leave here in a couple weeks
Awesome man. It's a beautiful area.
Flukemaster still hoping to Fish with you someday. You should come up to Washington State
Hey Gene, Great video. How would you flip and pitch from a kayak? I have a sit inside so theres even less room to work with than a sit on top. I find it difficult to get a proper pendulum from the seated position in my yak. Thanks!
i feel you, struggle is real man
The only way that I know how to is to stand up. Sit in kayaks are a huge disadvantage but you can make it work.
Hey Gene, any plans to get your review channel going again?
Yes
Nice job Gene! The river can be a frustrating place just to navigate for someone that hasnt been there before. The LMB on the river dont like current but love moving water. I make my own swim jigs that come through the slop that work well. What day was this? I was down there fishing on Monday.
Thank you!
lol the pike got ya😂
If you ever come to MN! do a meet up! Glad to tell you about lakes with good 4+lb bass!
Awesome Sauce!!!!!
Dockin & Walkin rod!
Where can I get that > shirt? That's sharp.
Probably from their website but I bet Tackle Warehouse sells it. I'll go find the link for you. www.tacklewarehouse.com/descpage-RLS.html?from=fluke
Flukemaster thanks! I learn so much from your vids. Thank you and keep up the good work!
I love to pitch grass.
Hey curious looking for a good reel (baitcaster) to throw on a 6'6 or 6'5 rod for frogginhopefully not too expensive
A Medium Fast is my favorite action and power. I use it for large squarebills, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, spooks, 1/4oz jigs, and chatterbaits
Flukemaster thank you! So basically top water rod?
Rusty Redfearn yes buzzbait and spook are top water baits, but he also mentioned 1/4 oz jigs, spinnerbaits, and large square bills. Just try different baits in the weight range and see what works.
David Bennett okay thanks
Gene I got a quick question , I have a concept A and C and an inception but for whatever reason the inception feels the smoothest and I don't know why , I have braid on the A and C and flourocarbon on the inception. Could It be that the A and C i got are not up to the standard ? They're all really smooth reels but for whatever reason the inception feels better.
I'm not sure what you mean by smooth but it could just be the line. You feel the braid coming through the guides more than you would the fluorocarbon.
Flukemaster it is probably is the line,it felt great out of the box but once I started fishing it, it felt different. thanks for clearing that up and responding so fast. Love your vids btw !
Fluke thanks to you I can actually catch fish now 😂😂
just a question about the frog rod, i obviously havent seen your rod next to a typical 7 foot or 7' 3" froggin rod, but wouldnt the short butt on yours put the reel about the same distance from the tip of thw rod as the 7 footers with a longer butt? cantwine e they are on sale on tackle warehouse, just look at the selections for the muse black.
Brennon Smith sweet! thank you sir!
Click on the link down in the description of the video. You get the rod and I get a little kickback from TW.
I live in La Crosse and would love to meet you, are you still in the area?
Sorry man. I'm back home. I was only there for a day.
