During the final years of his life, Joseph Campbell embarked on a speaking tour in which he drew together all that he had learned about what he called the “one great story” of humanity.
That's what I've been advocating for some time now too. Because we allowed our mind, our ego, to lead our lives, we got so detached from Nature that our bodies and psyche (which are, in a sence, a "product" of Nature) are struggling so much . Hence one of the many reasons that there is such a plethora of problems in modern society and culture.
I wish there was a longer version of his answer.

With the yea or nay line, was Campbell saying that the oriental system (of civilisation, governance, etc) is that if you aren't going to let go of the ego/separate self to live in society's system, then the system asks such folks to leave? In another lecture, he seems to indicate that the "left hand path" of finding your own way outside of society is a good thing for some. Collectivism and individualism is so interesting in these times, when many societies and economies can no longer keep the promise of stability to those who have said "yea" to them.
Depends on your point of view. My point of view is he is referring to 'yea' living in accordance with nature or 'nay' opting out of nature. Once you opt out of nature you follow the ego. "Leave us alone and go off into the woods and disappear" would keep those that live in accordance with nature safe from those that follow the ego but also would give those that follow the ego time to find themselves once again while in nature.
This is over my head.
Maybe so, but it's inside your heart; your gut knocks you 'bout too. hahaha

Can someone explain what he means about God versus nature?
My point of view, Ego always creates competition and thinks everything is competing, but the truth is nothing is competing, everything is working in cohesion. He wasn't saying God versus Nature, he was saying its funny how the ego will make you think these things.
