  • In this clip from a Q&A session following a lecture, Joseph Campbell discusses the "left-hand" path of mythology in the context of Europe, the Grail Romances, and the individual adventure.
    This Q&A session is unreleased footage from lectures featured in the Mythos series.
    For more on Mythos follow the link below;
    www.jcf.org/wo...
    During the final years of his life, Joseph Campbell embarked on a speaking tour in which he drew together all that he had learned about what he called the “one great story” of humanity. These remarkable talks were filmed and are presented here in the order and manner in which Campbell himself intended, with enhanced images and in minimally edited form.
    This series is made up of fifteen hours of talks that Campbell himself believed summed up his views on “the one great story of mankind.” Finally complete, and offered for the first time as a boxed set, here is Campbell’s vision of human myth, presented in all its glory.

    I was so certain of following my Bliss till the age of 40...
    Magic alignment happened many many times.
    The loss a publishing and marketing project with 21 backers, a decade later I nearly died of AIDS, another decade found a 30 year property venture failing...
    Now 5 decades after leaving school I find it hard to Trust Life at the deepest level...
    Insecurity rather than Bliss.
    Survival rather than Joy.
    Looking for Reassurance from Life...

      It was not just a new age thing for me... I lived this as a reality. Amazing coincidences. An incredible boss at age 24 gave me a transfer to our London office for a year, a new Rolls-Royce plus new Citroen 2CV plus CX. An invitation to the Royal Garden party, chauffeuring my parents around Scandinavia for 2 weeks. Then a 5 months youth hostelling tour of Europe split monthly between the Rolls and CX. Topped off with Concorde from London to New York on the way home.

      Then my Gay Coming Tour of Europe England Ireland Canada in USA in another new Citroen 2CV started with a week with my last girlfriend and the second week hot air ballooning over the Burgundy District of France. There I met a big boned Californian colourful socialite on her Divorce Recovery Trip from butter and vegetable oil sqillionaire.
      A year later I finally arrived in my little Citroen in the city of love San Francisco. She has started kids Diplomatic Peace Trips to Communist countries plus a pilot Children's Peace Prize.. It was the catalyst for me founding a parallel project and the Australian Children's Foundation at age 30. Got the International Children's Peace Prize into every Australian and New Zealand Primary school plus McDonald's. Raffled off an Aston Martin Lagonda, held a Charity Ball for 480 guests, a youth Rock Concert for 23,000 teenagers with 6 top rock bands, ran the Peace Prize for 4 years, released a record and video clip of 8 year old Peace Prize winner's entry Music Change The World with cameos from 30 top artists in the chorus including Elton John and Cliff Richard. Sent Aboriginal kids to China, the Eastern Bloc, Moscow. Other kids to Iraq, London and USA... I lived the New Age and Joseph Campbell Bliss for 2 decades before life started to short circuit...
      Except for the miracle of beating all the medical odds to recover from PML/AIDS at age 50, a magical 25 year gay partnership which ensures, plus Aboriginal Studies and special Koori friends.... The late Uncle Bobby Randal touched me with his wisdom....
      "Everything in Life is a Gift you bring to Yourself from your Soul. Don't be angry with your Soul for wanting You to Grow."....
      More than religion, new age, Krishnamurti, or Joseph Campbell, Uncle Bobby's message of Kanyini, the Connectedness of Everything speaks to my heart... It is hard to get my head to trust my heart deflected by the insecurities in my head.... Ever Onwards..

      @@stephenberry8658 Stephen, you see that this teaching was true but it can't be applied selectively. There are 2 more teachings that goes with it. First is about stages of life. The stage you are at should have kids so that you can have strength and teachings to pass on. The second teaching is about dying while being alive. Did you do it? Life is not only the bliss.

      @@techne_ Not really... The world has far too many people. I made my contributions to the next generation as the Founder of the Australian Children's Foundation. My aunt was a doctor who never was married or had kids and pioneered the care and education of intellectually handicapped children.
      Life is a rainbow of contributions to life and humanity for each of us to grow our souls... In doing so we grow the Collective Soul... The Divine connection of everything.

      You can thank the Joseph Campbell Foundation for that -- a bunch of Dinos, who are still tying to disseminate Campbell's message as if we were in the last century. The only way you can get Campbell's videos in their entirety is if you purchase them on an outdated format like a DVD... or get them in bits or pieces, mostly out of context.

      Continue your searching with joy, but I'm not sure that having lots of followers on UA-cam is what Joe Campbell wanted for his students in regards to following their bliss? Just ignore if this thought isn't thoughtful or meaningful enough. It's just a simple observation. Good luck regardless.

That's Vol. 3 in the "Masks of God" series; that and Vol.4 "Creative Mythology" really opened my eyes to a broader view of Western civilization, how we have so much more in common than we do differences. I don't really believe in his "follow your bliss" thing anymore. His story is he became a hermit between 25-30 and then he got a cushy job as a professor where he stayed almost his entire life. Anyone trying to "follow their bliss" may not find this path so inviting after 30 and before 30 many people have no established path anyway.

    • @shotjohnny
      @shotjohnny 2 роки тому +3

      What do you mean with "he got a cushy job"? Who says being a professor is easy? Especially, if you truly take an interest in your students.
      Campbell was mostly interested in learning new things -- especially, as they related to mythology. That was his bliss. So, he found a way to combine his passion with his service to the world (work). What's wrong with that? And I'm sure if he ever got tired of learning and teaching, he would have moved onto the next adventure. But I think he never did, because he kept on lecturing to regular audiences after his retirement, and thankfully so, because that's the only reason we have some of these lectures.

    Joseph is full of wisdom, but his conclusions are empty. He is basically concerned with consciounsess in the psychoanalytic tradition, which is pretty meaningless as is his notion of bliss.
