New Volvo EX30 Driven! The best EV under £35k?

- Опубліковано 29 тра 2024
- The Volvo EX30 is an all-new electric car, and arguably one of the most exciting EVs to arrive all year. With a range of between 214 and 296 miles depending on battery size, the EX30 aims to blend practicality, style and convenience into a small crossover that can be bought for less than £35,000 right now, and around £32,000 when the entry-level model arrives.
Not only that, but the top-spec dual-motor model can get from 0-62mph in just 3.6 seconds, making it the fastest Volvo production car there's ever been. The EX30 is available to order now, and arrives in showrooms in 2024. In this CarGurus UK video, Vicky Parrott gets an early drive of the EX30 and comes away very impressed.

Nailed it (again) Vicky, it's only the lack of HUD as std or option I think that stands out as a disappointment. Wouldn't be a deal breaker for me and I am sure the UI will get tweaked over the air as the feedback from customers comes in. I love the ethos of simplicity, use of sustainable materials and relative value the EX30 offers - surely if EVs are to be the future of motoring, that's what they should be about. This makes a lot of the heavy, tech laden, crystal embedded barges from some of the other manufacturers look suddenly out of step and a bit desperate. This is cool, simple and everything you need in an EV - its on my list as my next car.
Why do EV bashers insist on commenting on an EV review, it baffles me. If you’ve made up your mind beforehand why even watch.
Baffling, it says way more about them.... As my Mum used to say: "If you've got nothing to do, please don't do it here!" 😁
Fragile
Nice cancel culture mentality mr. dazaaw.
Newsflash: this is what commenting is about. There are positive and negative comments and disliking something doesn't make one a hater.
Please consider going outside and touching grass.
I always wonder that myself. Never engage with them as that is what they seek. Excellent review Vicky 👍🏾
The interior Particle trim is made from plastic window frames, not denim
It's clearly a small hatchback. The SUV term is for marketing purposes only
Really need to test drive on UK roads. Some of the specs you quoted in Barcelona test drive are different than what Volvo are quoting for RHD UK cars.
That is one great looking car and i would probably buy one.
Only one problem, i live in a flat.
@wolvoman1 I live in a mid terrace with no home charging, my EV has a year round range of around 105mi. I get by on a combination of destination slow and public rapid charging.
My local Lidl has a rapid charger, and that works quite well for me.
The only ex30 review I'll see.
5:55 does it have white front indicators? Is that allowed?
In Italy, where this was filmed, yes
Nice looking car. But I wish car reviews would spend more time on the outside.
Checout the earlier reviews of the car, around June 23. Since they could only look at the car there are lots of detailed commentaries about the external features. One thing we love is the simple black plastic ‘lip’ of the wheel arch liner. Preferable to the wide plastic margons of our E Niro.
No driver display, no deal. Shame.
The EX30 is nice but its not that much of a bargain. The Core version without extended range has not got enough range to be viable for a lot of people. And with extended range we are entering a pricerange where there's a LOT of competition. Its also a smaller car than most options in its price range and its minimalistic (whether you like that or not, it is cheaper to produce and delivers less). Still, it might be one of the more fun cars in its class to drive (wish you could disable TC though).
Anyone who fancies one who wears varifocals - you'll have issues focusing on the central screen. All you really need in front of you is a speed display. I mean, how hard is that? Not too much to ask one would have thought. Also tis about time they sorted such vital info a speed to appear to the eye as being 'road distance' away. Continually re-focusing your eyes every time you even so much as glance at the speed is tiring. Moreso if you have to swivel your head or eyeballs. And, one day, real switches will make a comeback.
You have to refocus your eyes every time you look at the speed in a standard binacle. What is the difference? It is still the same distance away on the screen!! What senseless pinpricking. Make your comments when you have properly experienced using the screen speed readout. You will find you're used to it in about 2 minutes
I wear Varifocals driving my Tesla with no issue using the centre screen. Don't see how this would be any different.
Some varifocals have more of a sweet spot. I have to turn my head to look directly at the centre - just swivelling my eyes causes me to look through the wrong part of my glasses. Very tiring compared to just dipping your eyes straight down at a speedo in front of you where the varifocals are correct. @@tedlandy
NO, you won`t - I´ve Got variofocals and have never ever problems in my Tesla model3 - that “problem” exits only in your head my friend.
Thanks for clearing that up for me. All this time when I glance down at my centre console and find it's blurry until I turn my head towards it I now realise I was only imagining it, and my glasses don't have a centre 'sweet spot' after all. What a relief I don't have to buy the more expensive ones with the wider field. So grateful...

Gosh, they say that the MG4 is cheap inside. For a Volvo, it is very cheap inside.
It’s actually faster 0-63 than she stated here according to Volvo
Interior looks cheap. I know it's all recycled and everything but I like a nicer environment to spend time in. I checked out a Polestar near me and that felt cheap too so it seems to be a theme here.
Grille pain 🍞 🍞 🍞 🍞
I don't understand these electric car designs! The battery is under the floor. The engine is at the back. Why does the car need this huge useless area at the front under the hood?
Don’t agree with him. He is entitled to his opinion even though I consider many of them as FUD.
It is not the “smallest car Volvo ever made” . It is a Geely made car
Lovely looking car, both outside & inside. Also very good price, and great performance. But why-oh-why do manufactures insist on ruining it by so many awful features/decisions … (1) no screen of vital information in drivers direct line of sight, and no option for a HUD either, (2) crazy no-key entry system that is awkward, hit-&-miss, and very likely an open goal for car thieves, (3) actual real range is poor - probably only about 220 miles with the bigger battery even under best summer conditions, dropping to 180 in winter, and for the smaller battery probably only about 180 miles in best conditions dropping to 150 or less in winter. No real buttons/knobs/switches in the car at all … off-centre touch-screen only for almost everything, and even the controls on the steering wheel are haptic-feedback touch pads only. And (4) it may say “Volvo”, but Volvo is now apparently owned by the Chinese company Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, and this “ Volvo” appears to be yet another cut-price Chinese car, built in China, and actually a just re-styled but almost identical version of the Zeeker-X.
Vicky looks hot 😍
The cheap plastics, no hud or driver's display, no buttons... Doesn't feel like a premium car to me
Pilot Assist will not change lane for you.
Yes it will - flick the indicator
This review seem rather rushed. I'm all for a quick pace, but it's like they really couldn't be bothered compared to other reviews out there.
Another poorly prepared reviewer.
The dash in the reviewed car is made from recycled windows and roller shutters, not denim.
The car seats can be raised - like in most good cars - to give more space for feet.
It is not biologically correct to say the position of a drivers display in the steering wheel binnacle is “in line of sight”. Unless you’ve had your eyelids removed, your peripheral vision with horizontal eye movement is wider than with vertical movement. The EX30 drivers info is at eye level so sideways eye movement provides a view ahead with peripheral vision, when viewing the display.
I’m amazed at the amount of people that don’t understand this horizontal eye thing.
Well over £30k for even the basic version, tight in the back, mediocre boot size, so so range, Chinese owend company now, and every control on the touchscreen with no easy and tactile to use physical conrols in sight! Taking those points into account, the EX30 does not appeal!
Yes indeed. Thats why Volvo has literally more pre orders than it can handle. Too expensive? Compared to what? The roads in the UK are littered with large ICE SUVs that are at least this price. Many cost much more and having nothing like the driving power and dynamics of this car. When people realise the significant cost benefits of driving an EV, they’ll switch. Off peak overnight charging, which most families in the the price bracket for an EV can get on their drive, will return about 2p/mile cost. It’s not only the planet that will benefit. PS. have a look at your consumer electricals, phone, computer, tablet. I’ll bet they’re all made in China. The argument that we should baulk at buying a car that’s made In China when we have been enjoying low cost, high quality products made there for 20 years is hypocrisy.
High quality?
Not much to add to those valid criticisms... That are all valid
I don't care how many pre-orders the car has. I expressed only my own view.
Furthermore, it is a bizarre thing to say just because we buy a lot of Chinese owned products, we should continue to keep buying Chinese owned products!
Exactly
I agree with Peter Zeihan who gives a very good explanation why EV's don't make sense, posted on UA-cam on November 2nd 2023.
Give us the link please?
This is a Chinese Volvo not a Swedish Volvo and what a great shame that is because a real Volvo driver interface would not require you to take your eyes off the road.
If this were a Swedish Volvo it would automatically have a HUD and more physical buttons as a safety requirement.
Add to this China's atrocious human rights record and my money will definitely be going elsewhere.
Hippocracy... Chinese products are everywhere. You probably typed your comment on one...
@@Damo699You're making assumptions about someone you don't know.... not very sensible.
At the end of the day a line needs to be drawn....do I really want to buy a high ticket value Chinese made car bearing in mind the atrocious human rights record China has...the answer is a definite no.
Suv electric..
Shame!! its a No from me.
It's the size of a VW golf. Calling something an SUV doesn't make it huge you know?
6 months time will be worth £15000… Volvo so woke not making petrol or diesel … GO WOKE GO BROKE!
I agree it will be a snappy used deal for someone with home charging who does short distances... At £15000 it would be a lot more appealing...
You’re are a very cool man. Thats easy for us all to understand.
But how about a future where we can breath fresh air, that not causes bad diseases?
Doesn’t that seems like a good thing to you?
Interessant Brian - personalet I Think it`s the other Way around, keep Diesel/petrol Will make you go broke. - Let`s have a Beer in 10 years time, the losser Will pay ;-);-)
