  • The Stinson 108-3 is the next aircraft of a member we feature. This is another classic aircraft circa 1948. Its a rag and tube aircraft, meaning its a fabric covered airplane. When this aircraft was built few asphalt runways existed and grass runways littered the countryside. This airplane was built for that environment it like to be operated on grass strip and out of farm fields. The Stinson 108 is an honest 4 person aircraft with a useful load around 1000 pounds, you can load it with people, add some luggage, and still have enough fuel to get some where. The Franklin 165 horsepower engine provide ample power and a smooth ride. The Stinson 108-3 had a few upgrades over earlier models with the addition of large fuel tanks, a stronger main spar allowing a higher max gross weight, a larger tail for more flight stability, and the addition of rudder trim. All of these aircraft originally came with wooden propellers most including this one were upgraded to a metal prop that provides better performance. This Stinson has some other optional upgrades including a vacuum system and instruments and is the Voyager model designed primarily as an aircraft for personal and family travel vs. the Station Wagon model that had a rear seat area designed to haul cargo as well as people. In this video you will see Scooters Stinson 108-3 up close.

    Hey Scooter.....I watched this video again for reference and encouragement. I am doing a prebuy on a candidate 108-3 this weekend. Any last minute advice? I have been looking for a while and I just wanted you to know that you and your videos have inspired me to get current again, get a tailwheel endorsement and buy a Stinson. I think that was your goal with this channel and you have met your goal, Sir!!! Thank you so much for your content.

      There's a little more information about the Stinson Air frame on the Stinson 108 review video. And I'm glad it inspired you to get your tail wheel and get current again, That is the idea behind the channel. It makes me smile to see its work at least once!

      Hey Todd, how was your pre-buy and inspection? I'm in the market for a 108, love these aircraft! Did you use Vref as a base for pricing? Any advice for approaching this buy?
      Scooter, sent you a message on Instagram if you have any spare time.

    My family had a 1946 Stinson Voyager in the 1970s thru the 1990s. I had no idea this is considered such a good plane. I often wonder who has it now, where it went to. My dad was the pilot and also an instructor and I see you have a vid about Put in Bay, we are from Ohio, near Cleveland and used to fly there all the time. When I was a teen I took formal lessons from my dad in the late 1980s and did my first solo flight to Kellys Island. We flew out of Columbia airport that is on Rt. 82 in Columbia Station.

      I've flown into Columbia airport. It's still there. It's getting a little rundown as an airport it seems to be under decline, but it's a great stop. I don't think the Stinson was considered a great airplane until recently. In the '70s through the '90s it would have been considered a inexpensive tail wheel airplane and hadn't reached its " vintage status " yet. There was a point where tail wheel airplanes and fabric airplanes were considered an inferior means of construction. As people make home builds and we look at strength and weight, there's been a new acceptance of tube and fabric airplanes and we've come to realize that It's a great construction method. If you have any pictures of that airplane I'd love to see them.

    My 108-3 had wood in the cabin on the walls and doors. Kinda looked like it was a vintage boat inside.

    Thanks for the video, it brings back memories of a little boy riding along with his dad in our 1948 Stinson Voyager in the late 1950s in Missouri before we moved to California.

    THANKS LOADS for a bit of a nostalgic ride. When I was a kid, our family had a 1948 108-3 Voyager, "Station Wagon" model. I loved that plane. Never went cross country, but had some great Saturdays in it. We flew out of the (now gone) White Rock Airport in east Dallas (now condos). Still some internet info about that airport. We had a Piper Tri-pacer for awhile, loved it also, but the Stinson was our long term craft and always smooth. One uncle went to become a senior captain for Braniff flying 747s Dallas to Honolulu, non-stop. Thanks again for such a nice review and ride-along.

    Scooter? I think that's your handle. I love my dash 3 too! You're a great salesman for the Stinson brand. Great flying airplanes...love the s-m-o-o--t-h running Franklin. Yours is a very late serial number. One of the last ones made. Mine, N6102M.

    • @GreatMichiganBushCo
      @GreatMichiganBushCo  5 років тому

      Yes, mine was originally sold in 1948 by Piper and is a fairly late serial number. The story told at Willow Run airport (where this aircraft was delivered from) is after Piper purchased Stinson the remaining 108 stock sat outside tide down in the center of the field and you could out and choose your aircraft. So the last 300 or so 108's were sold out of order. Also supposedly during the few years they sat outside a hail storm hit Willow Run damaging the aircraft. So you'd pick the aircraft you wanted and Piper would fix the holes in the fabric, repaint it and send you on your way. These are old timers stories not sure how true.

      medic27503 You probably will see more of Michigan City airport. “Plane shopping” has some MGC airport coverage. The swift fuel is great in the Franklin so I we stop there whenever possible. Great airport, I wish the vending machines look credit cards.

    Hello I just had a quick question I have never been in a Stinson and I am a little bit claustrophobic and I am not sure if its just camera angle but it seems like there is not very much headroom.

    • @GreatMichiganBushCo
      @GreatMichiganBushCo  23 дні тому

      The headroom is limited for some. I sit on a cushion so I can see over the cowl while taxiing. That takes a little headroom away.

    • @GreatMichiganBushCo
      @GreatMichiganBushCo  5 років тому +1

      GERMAN TORRES I run a 13 passage oil cooler on mine and it runs to cool. At 45C this cooler would keep the engine at a good temperature. The original wouldn’t work well though.

    1500 ft per minute climb? 165hp. Maybe momentarily while you haul back on the yoke and watch rate of climb needle jerk up for a few seconds. No way would you sustain that climb rate for more than a minute with that power. Don't get me wrong, I love 108s but that number seems very unrealistic. If I'm wrong, show me.
