i dont like scotch whiskey and i tryed bourbon with this brand i loved it.. never liked whiskey until i tryed the bourbon one.. but would someone know if i like this one? should i try or is it no way i will like it?
Technical question: I know bourbon has to be put into virgin barrels. Can the finishing barrels like the toasted ones used here be reused like the “Solera” aging process?
When are you going to do a review on the Very Old St Nick? I seen a few bottles near me and I’m hesitant on buying it. Your input would be greatly appreciated and taken to consideration on my purchase of the bottle. Thanks in advance.
I think you should up the contrast just slightly or maybe rearrange the lighting. The last few videos with the new cam kind of wash things out. Good job on the aperture settings though.
Well, now I'm both hungry for breakfast and ready for a nice pour. Sounds delicious! Great review as always. It has been a while since I had the toasted barrel rye. Cheers buddy!
Does Michters chill filter all of their products? I thought I read they do? Is it a huge change to their process (i.e. expensive) to not chill filter a release?
The Mash and Drum thanks for the info and for the great reviews! I am fairly new to whiskey, but I’m finding my taste profile in Bourbon and Rye closely matches yours as far as what I like and don’t like. So, thanks again!
Thanks for the review + comparison. I'm fairly new to the bourbon world and would like to get in on some of these limited releases. What's the best way to keep a pulse on when these hit shelves? Thanks buddy, cheers.
Keep an eye on publications like Whiskey advocate, Distiller and Breaking Bourbon for all the release info. Sometimes the release date doesnt quite make it to a certain area on time. Make good connections with store owners as well.
I picked one up recently. I’m not a fan of the core releases but I knew I’d never see this again so I pulled the trigger. Still debating on tasting it or trading it. If someone isn’t a fan of the core release do you think this would be something they would like more because of the higher proof and toasting? Thanks Jason
I picked up one last year for $110 at the distillery and I believe it had 2018 on the label (but I could be wrong). Just got a 2020 release and first impressions are it's less sweet / marshmallow and much more toasted than I remember the other one being. I saved a sample so think I'll have to do a bit of a side by side on my stream tomorrow to see how they compare. Thanks for the inspiration, and great review as always. The older bottle I had was absolutely worth what I paid. I'm glad I found this one for MSRP. Cheers!
Looks like I will have to settle for my 2017 Toasted barrel bottles as the 2020 was gone in minutes online. Still have 2.5 bottles of the regular Barrel proof so I am covered as I like them a little more anyway.
Great B-roll - gotta love that 🔥! Michter's regular line-up is pretty available - not their more special releases but will keep an eye out. Besides Michter's and Angel's Envy Rye, are there other finished or used barrel ryes? Thanks.
My local mom and pop just got 2 bottles of this in but theyre pricing it at $120, I'd love to pick this up but everyone ive spoken to has given the same advice. Its not worth more than $100. Great review though and hope I can find it closer to retail one day.
I don't think any of them are worth more than 200. Unfortunately msrp is about 300. If you want to spend that type of money and own a Kentucky Owl...Batch 9 is the best Ive had from them.
Love this comparison Jason. I`d settle for any of these if I could get them. I enjoy their American whisky so I think the quality is there, but the need to chill-filter is a little disappointing.....you`re not getting the best experience possible IMHO.
Never could get my hands on the toasted bourbon, maybe I'll get lucky and find this at my local. Stopped in a few days ago and they had one bottle of Elijah Craig Barrel Proof at retail so I'm happy for a few weeks 😁 Cheers! 🥃
Would love to hear your thoughts about this Michter's Toasted rye compared to Angel's envy rye as they seem to have some of the same notes. Love your channel btw!
I love finding old videos that I haven't seen, Great review, Jason.
Yo! That Old Forester 150 in the back though 😳😍
literally was about to post this...wonder what batch it is
Check the Mash and Drum instagram. A good Whiskey Wednesday lineup.
Found a pair at 90 each yesterday
Sounds great! Too pricy in my area! I have to agree on the Rare Breed Rye, it’s a nice pour!
Just picked one up for 114 tacos
i dont like scotch whiskey and i tryed bourbon with this brand i loved it.. never liked whiskey until i tryed the bourbon one.. but would someone know if i like this one? should i try or is it no way i will like it?
this bottle will cost me 130 dollar in norway..
Have you tried this years?
Review dropping soon
Sweet, can’t wait to see what you think. I really like it and I’m not a huge rye guy. BTW, love your channel man.
@@jadval18 thanks man! Appreciate that. Folks have been saying how good this years MTR is so looking forward to diving in.
Toasted marshmallows, maple syrup, and a hint of citrus. agreed 💯. Also prefer this by far over the toasted bourbon.
Great review brother. Cheers 🤙🏼🥃
I found a bottle sitting on the shelf at a Total wine for 79.99! I snagged right up and I couldn't agree more! Great stuff!
Technical question: I know bourbon has to be put into virgin barrels. Can the finishing barrels like the toasted ones used here be reused like the “Solera” aging process?
Just picked one up for retail, after watching this, I can’t wait to open it! Thanks for the great review.
Michter's Rye is my favorite go to rye. Thanks for the heads up on this. Will go on the search. Wish me luck!
Ditto. The first bottle of Michter's Rye we ever bought almost didn't make it through night # 1!
lol same. Michters Rye was the first Rye I tried and it's still my go-to. All this Toasted Barrel jazz has me ready to go on the hunt.
Down with secondary 👊
That B role is on point!
Dag - that was a video inside a video!
I feel like a lot of what you got on this Toasted Barrel you can find in Pikesville. Would you say that's a pretty good alternative? $50 everywhere!
Absolutely. Not as marshmallow in the Pikesville but may be more close to the barrel strength rye.

Yeah I'm giving it more of a vintage look over the high contrast. Still a work in progress but love the camera.
Well, now I'm both hungry for breakfast and ready for a nice pour. Sounds delicious! Great review as always. It has been a while since I had the toasted barrel rye. Cheers buddy!
Man this sounds right up my alley! Went to one of two stores that I figured would get it this morning. Of course the other one did......
Does Michters chill filter all of their products? I thought I read they do? Is it a huge change to their process (i.e. expensive) to not chill filter a release?
They do. Its not but some do it for cosmetic reasons and also some distillers thinks it alters the way the final product is...not for the better.
The Mash and Drum thanks for the info and for the great reviews! I am fairly new to whiskey, but I’m finding my taste profile in Bourbon and Rye closely matches yours as far as what I like and don’t like. So, thanks again!
Nice review but honestly couldn't take my eyes off the OF 150 anniversary in the background. I really want to get my hands on 1 or those .
Why are bourbons over 46% ABV chill filtered?
Also, love your channel. I've been learning a lot about bourbon - so thanks!

Secondary is closer to 4 bills than 2
Yeah Im hearing that...cant believe that.
All I see is the 150th Old Forester. I am damn jealous!
Bravo on the B-roll!
thanks Eric!

Its definitely sweeter and higher proof which is why most love it. If your not a fan of sweeter ryes than trade it.
I have been hunting michters rye BS and toasted BS for 2 years. I had a sample from a friend and it lived up to the hype
Perfect timing on the review, just found a bottle of this yesterday lol
Nice!

The Barrel proof is still my Fav! this is good but way more sweet.
I'll swap you a 2020 Toasted for a Barrel Strength...

i'd buy it at $120
I'm still looking for the American whiskey version.
Secondary on MTBR 2020 is 280, not 150-200. Stores around me sell this damn bottle for 200 lol
Wow. Someone told me how high these have gotten. Nuts!
Yes, I have seen many say they would pay up to 200$ but no more for it.
Kentucky Owl batch 9 for $350 - worth it or no?
I don't think any of them are worth more than 200. Unfortunately msrp is about 300. If you want to spend that type of money and own a Kentucky Owl...Batch 9 is the best Ive had from them.
@@TheMashandDrum I've been on the fence with this bottle for days. Thanks for the insight.
@@TheMashandDrum Solid advice.
I think a old carter batch 5 is on par with owlbatch 9 and is 100.00 less, if you can find it.
What camera lens are you using?
Sigma 1.6
@@TheMashandDrum Is that on a cannon or Sony camera?
I just found it at my liquor store in Encinitas, Ca for $499 😳😳😳 seriously???
That Old Forester 150 on the side tho 👀
Good eye.
As always Great review Jason. I would also like to see you compare it to WT Rare Breed Rye.
👍 🥃 Cheers!!
Secondary has jumped to $280.
OMG...havent seen it that high. Dear lord.
Ouch, hope that's a solid pass from the majority. Straight liquor scalpers smdh
When it came out they were going for 325 easy
Seems to be $399 at all major Internet retailers today. Ouch!
I don’t see this in my area >_< but I did see longrow 14. I saw you bought the longrow bottle a while ago. Did you try it yet?
Yes. Love longrow.
The Mash and Drum awesome! I might pick it up! Are you planning on reviewing that bottle?
Low key flexin with that of150...that rules
Love this comparison Jason. I`d settle for any of these if I could get them. I enjoy their American whisky so I think the quality is there, but the need to chill-filter is a little disappointing.....you`re not getting the best experience possible IMHO.
Love it- toasting that oak in the B-Roll! This sounds amazing- hope to find one out there. Cheers Jason
Killled it Jason!
Darn at $85 its hard to Justify when Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye @ $60. I think I will stick with the Turkey. Good review though.
Never could get my hands on the toasted bourbon, maybe I'll get lucky and find this at my local. Stopped in a few days ago and they had one bottle of Elijah Craig Barrel Proof at retail so I'm happy for a few weeks 😁 Cheers! 🥃
That will do!
But this is not What's on the Shelf...point of order, you gotta get that VSON off the barrel.
This wasnt a whats on the shelf wednesday episode

Only an east coast guy would call out the "fluff" note lol I grew up on peanut butter and fluff sandwiches
Love that shirt! haha wadddda
(( Oh man : THAT heavy INTRO MUSIC ! ! )) As always, great vid.
Thanks for the great review...I am fired up I found one even though it was $150.... I can't wait to crack it open this weekend! Cheers
