There's a truly lve version of this where Phil starts on drums along with Chester Thompson then moves to the mic, blows this version away. Phil was the drummer for Genesis and took over vocals when Peter Gabriel left. Genesis and Gabriel are two more artists with plenty to react to. Abacab from Genesis is a good place to start, with Phil on drums and vocals.
Try 'home by the sea' it's in two parts but let it roll into the 2nd part for sure. The lyrics are deep and not all people get them. I used to listen to his albums one right after the other with headphones and an ass kickin stereo. I'd pay on the floor for hours with the whole world drowned out. Perfect music for escaping dumb people and dumb life circumstances. Smoke a little weed for even better effect. Trust me.
Depends on how you define peak. Peak as a commercial artist or peak as an artistic writer/performer? I'd say 1982-1990 was definitely the peak of Collins' commercial success as a solo artist. Otherwise, I'd say that range for was far more expansive for Collins as a drummer/writer/stage man as both a solo artist and member of Genesis combined. Only the decline in his health has set him back, unfortunately.
So sad. He's SO ill. He gave us his all back in the day, and we all enjoy his music and so few know how bad off he really is. I pray the Lord sustain him and take away his pain and anguish. I can't imagine what he goes through to know that his used be be on top, and now he can barely do anything for himself. We LOVE you, Phil!!
He was the drummer of Genesis until Peter Grabriel left after Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. He wrote all the drum licks for the music along with Chester Thompson, who was his drummer after Peter left. This song is incredible, the old-school Genesis stuff is unmatched. Lamb might be the greatest Progressive Rock album of all time. Phil Collins is one of three people who has sold more than 150 million albums both as a single artist and as part of a band. He is a freaking machine; a supremely talented individual who we are lucky to have in our lives.
Chester Thompson is awesome. I got to see Genesis on the Invisible Touch tour back in 87. It was in Tokyo while I was stationed in Japan. I was in heaven because I was on the back of the band so I got to see Chester and Phil go off on the drums at times. Mostly all played by Chester obviously. Legendary stuff.
Phil Collins is multi talented i have been lucky to see him 3 tes in montreal pick any song it doesn't matter which one but know hes not doing well his son does the drums fr him now check out the son also
Not only he’s a talented musician, but you can see his acting skills in the videos as well. He trained as an actor first and then quit to become a musician, as I understand. And you can see that in the way he acts when he sings. It’s very theatrical in a way. Such a talented person.
Actually Phill Collins was regarded by many as one of the best drummers in the world during the 70's / 80's. He was not meant to be a singer, he was the drummer for Genesis and he stepped up as singer in 1975 filling up after Peter Gabriel left the band to initiate his solo career. It was then when he became the signature voice of Genesis and later his own solo albums. He is such a multifaceted and talented musician that in his 1993 release "Both Sides" he played all the instruments, sang all the songs and primary production duties. A lot of people disliked him considering him too commercial and even sell out but his style and his music has always been clean, elegant, and experiential, he never compromised in quality. I wish nowadays music was made like Phill Collins has done it.
PhiL Collins was EVERYWHERE in the 80’s……writing hit after hit after hit. he couldn’t lose. yes..started as Drummer for Prog rock band Genesis. When their singer left, Phil stepped up. Then he went solo and was hugely successful. He also plays keys. Guitarist is Daryl Steurmer……..outstanding talent. This is autobiographical…..he wife really screwed him over big time. He is very much in touch with his passions and project them well onstage. He also has acting experience….which helps with his intensity.
Phil Collins is my favorite artist. Absolutely so passionate in his singing. His music has helped me through a lot of tough times. He has SO many good songs!
Please do more Phil Collins!!! Sussudio, Against all odds, Something happened on the way to heaven, Take me home, Another day in paradise, One more night, Two hearts, In too deep, Invisible touch, That's all, I wish it would rain down, Do you remember, Mama, You'll be in my heart, Groovy kind of love, Tonight tonight tonight, & soooo many more
I still hear him everywhere I go. But you're right. For a decade it seemed lime every other song on the radio was his. And he was acting. And giving interviews.
That weird looking instrument is a Moog Taurus! It's a synthesizer designed with foot pedals (like you'd find on an old organ) instead of the more traditional black & white keyboard. This makes it so you can play with your feet whilst having another keyboard/synth atop to play with your hands. I've never seen someone use it with their hands like that in a performance though. Furthermore, that's the instrument making those absolutely MASSIVE bass tones! The first time I heard one in concert was mind-blowing because it sounded like the friggin earth was about to open up and release the kraken.
You have to constantly switch octaves through the song to get all the notes in their correct register, really could never do it with feet unless you were sitting in a chair. I have had one forever, it can shake stadiums, in smaller rooms the wavelengths dont resonate like they would when allowed to resonate fully.
An amazing instrument. I figured it was (in my mind) like a synth-bass. I just LOVE those low groaning/vibrating notes when I hear them. I believe that The Police and Peter Gabriel use similar instruments that produce the very distinct sound. Maybe even Gaddy Lee of Rush. All my favorites really. Thank you for explaining this instrument in greater detail. Extremely interesting to me!
The drummer you see there is Chester Thompson. He toured with Genesis, providing powerful drums while Phil got up to sing, and remained for amazing drum duets with Phil when he sat down to play. I saw Genesis during the "Mama" tour, and their drum duets were a highlight, playing off each other rhythmically in an epic way. Simply amazing.
Yeah. Their drum duet blew me away. At first I thought WTF, but as it went on I got sucked in and by the end the emotion was explosive. The crowd went wild. Such a performance.
If you want some chills and a build up to him belting out a great ending try “I Wish It Would Rain Down” it was one of those great movie type videos in the late 80’s, definitely one of the top favs of his
Phil wrote all the songs and played most of the instruments himself during the recording process of all ALL of his solo albums. Between Genesis and his solo work....not to mention songs written for movie soundtracks and producing, recording and playing with many other artists. You could not escape this man's voice abd and talents throughout ALL of the 1980's... there was simply no other artist as prolific and busy as PHIL COLLINS. And ALL OF IT WAS GREAT. And you never tired of him....the quality and that genuinely humbleness he always had. It never wavered, and he was never out there seeking undeserved attention. It was all about the music...from the writing, to the singing; to the playing, to the recording process.... and ultimately to the live stage. No wonder he's falling apart and in bad shape today... he broke his ASS for years and years and years....giving all of us HIS ALL. Nobody comes close.
Passion. Yes. Talent. Yes. Drummer. Yes. Genesis was a band with extremely talented musicians. Chester Thompson played drums with him for decades. Their duets are legend.
Genesis / Phil Collins would not have been able to do what they did LIVE without all the talented supporting musicians which they "held onto" over decades. This is especially important with Phil and his on/off drumming during a concert. He also includes "drum battles" with Chester Thompson ... and luckily his son seems to be able to play Phil's songs on the drums.
@@Muck006 The only 3 outside supporting musicians Genesis ever used were Bill Bruford playing drums on the 76 Trick tour because Phil was now up front singing lead vocals. Then Chester Thompson took over as the live drummer in 1977>2007. And Daryl Steurmer took over as guitarist in 1978 after Steve Hackett went solo to the end. Chester and Daryl were also in Phil's touring bands. So the 3 man Genesis basically since 77-78 became a 5 man Live Genesis. They never used backup singers or other musicians, with the exception of this last final tour where Phil was immobile and weaker in voice.
@markweston-op4hx My post was about live touring. The Phoenix Horns were used on those studio tracks. They may have had a one off show where the Phoenix Horns played live w Genesis in NYC, but certainly not for a whole tour.
Yes, both songs are perfect, "In the Air Tonight" and this one, "I Don't Care Anymore". It basically depends on your own mood when you listen to these songs. One, in anticipation of something coming and feeling it or of feeling it's prescence coming. First time it conquered you because you didnt know how to beat but now you know and have prepared and are ready for it. Second, just being done, so done that you have to sang about, temper your rage, yet expresses your flat out contempt for someone and even something. Phil is EVERYTHING!!!
Phil made the drums sing, it was like they became part of the backing vocals. You can always tell when he's provided the drums as a guest artist on another artistes album. I've always loved this track, one if Phil's most powerful tracks in my humble opinion.
YAAAAASSSS!!!❤ My theme song!❤️ Suuuuuuch a great song. Phil is the man, and trust me, you NEVER tire of him. Love him so much it makes my heart swell when i hear him. 🥰
Phil Collins was a phenomenal drummer and he wrote the song, so the drum work on it, that was his vision even though he wasn't playing for this video. He is retired he can't play drums anymore because of physical problems, but, we are lucky to have videos to visit these gems from the past. His passion and his voice was meant to be lead singer.
Probably heard by now, but that thing the dude's playing with his fists are Moog Taurus Bass Pedals. They usually sit on the floor and are played with your foot. Crazy rib-shaking low notes. Awesome instrument.
His song, Take Me Home, has a different mood, but just as impactful. Easy lover with Philip Bailey of Earth, Wind, and Fire is awesome too. Try either of those songs please.
"Take Me Home" is a great song! Very enigmatic lyrics about being in a mental hospital. There's quite a bit of mental illness themes in Genesis music, and in Phil's.
I love how you can tell by his emotions on stage exactly what he's feeling... he's just saying i don't care anymore just leave me alone and go away...but captivating us like we're there watching the fight he's having ❤ pure genius
You're right - people don't sing with that kond of emotion anymore. The 2000s just changed everything. 70s, 80s and some of the 90s are where it's at.❤
You are so correct. I have felt precisely the same. 70's 80's 90's and sadly, that's it. Born in 68. Parents introduced me to the 1970's music....Carly Simon, Neil Diamond, ABBA, Fleetwood Mac.....then throughout all the 1980's....my teen years...and MTV....just all the best rock and pop ever....just too many artists to mention.....90's great stuff too. Today I live in the past on a daily basis....especially with my music listening
You are RIGHT. Not just the drummer. Both drummer AND lead singer for Genesis. Came on as the drummer then replaced Peter Gabriel on lead vocals. Incredibly talented!!
I've seen him as solo and Genesis 3x. Every performance was incredible. The whole band always showed up to show out. And Phil was great at making sure everyone in the band was recognized. Just an amazing performer
He was the lead singer and the drummer for Genesis , check it out , always has been next level...He wasn't just doing a simple backing beat , serious drum work so hard to sing when drumming....The guy is special....
His mom ran a theater school of which he attended. I feel like that transcends into his performances. Very theatrical and purposeful and I love him forever.
It's really hard to admit that to ourselves first of all, but then taking positve steps to improve our lives. Not caring "no mo", bad grammar there, but it is empowering. Always seek the light. Every relationship has it's difficulties, but toxic ones need to be walked away from. Be true to your heart if your good people out there, you'll find joy, love, hope... Carry on my friends. Spell check messed that up.
You know what: MINE TOO. Never heard anything quite like it before or since. Really doesn't sound like anything else...from 1982...to the current day. The Live versions over the years were great as well
It’s IN THE AIR TONIGHT my friend 👍 this was my all time favorite of PHIL COLLINS/Genesis was the name of the group back in the day 🥰😘 live your reactions ❤️
I had a job in 2021 that I (along with everybody else) absolutely hated. Every day of the week I quit I brough a speaker into the break room during break, got a cup of coffee, and played this song on repeat full blast! Introduced a lot of people to Phil Collins that week! And felt pretty good all week.
Yes he was just the drummer, no one knew he could sing, they needed a singer and Phil said he would do it, the rest is history, lol, Phil is a badass, they were great live, met Phil once, we literally ran into each other.
"In The Air Tonight" was the lead single off Phil's first solo album...1981's FACE VALUE. "I Don't Care Anymore" was the lead single from Phil's 2nd solo album, 1982's HELLO I MUST BE GOING. He plays the drums himself on the original album recordings, of course. During live concerts however, the drumming is performed by drummer Chester Thompson, who also is an outstanding musician, who by the way also handled drumming duties during all the Genesis tours throughout the late 1970's, 1980's, 1990's and up to I believe the 2007 Genesis Live Over Europe Tour. Just amazing.
Love that song.. reminds me of my childhood.. when MTV first came on the air.. 81 or 82.. amazing times.. I wish it wer still that way.. but the world has to evolve.. but just being honest..those were certainly better times
His music comes from his very personal self. The stories he tells , and the feeling/emotions he evokes with his words are so very very relatable. Has made some incredible music , solo and with Genesis , which is probably why his career has lasted so long and spanned generations.
Just searched to see if you reacted to Phil Collins’ I Don’t Care Anymore, and SO glad to see that you did! Watching it now a year after you did it! This is a GREAT one to play loud in the car when I’m pissed; usually at the same person; it’s my go-to and it’s cathartic! He’s a genius, and you are right; it sounds tribal and I LOVE it.
Yes,this was written during his first divorce. This is one of the angriest bitter songs ever. Another similar one is the Genesis Mama song done live, either the 1987 live video or the 2007 Rome live video. Phil Collins was the drummer for Genesis from 1971 through the last 50 years except for some interludes of inactivity. He became both the drummer AND lead singer when Peter Gabriel left Genesis to start a solo career in 1975. He's one of the greatest drummers of the last half century. He also drummed in the jazz fusion instrumental band Brand X for about 4 years. The solo band he has playing with him is Chester Thompson on drums. Chester was part of the Genesis live band on every tour from 1977 to 2007, and the drummer for Phil's solo tour bands ever since Phil started doing solo tours in the early 1980s. They have a great chemistry drumming together and they always done some great dual drumming duets in every Genesis and solo Collins tour. I saw them play live together 10 times with Genesis and 4 times with Phil's band like here. Phil of course played the drums for this song on the album, so Chester drums when Phil sings up front. The guitarist Daryl Steurmer is also from the Genesis live touring band, from 1978 all the way to the last and final Genesis tour in 2022. He's also played in Phil's solo band for Phil's entire career. So basically when Phil did his solo tours, 3 of the 5 people in the band, including Phil himself, were also on all the Genesis live tours since 1977-78, except the last final Genesis tour where Phil's son drummed instead of Chester. Sadly, Phil couldn't physically drum anymore due to nerve injuries to his hands and wrists.
This man was the definition of talent Some of the best song writing skills on the planet Phill was not my favorite artist but This man could make you feel what he was singing about The song In The Air Tonight Was our Prom song at my high school in 1988
he wrote this supposedly after going through his divorce. his emotions are shining through in this song. his talent in all his songs is outstanding! thank you!
Still love Phil'susic cause it seems as fresh as the first time I heard it decades ago. It's just feels good and easy to lose yourself in. Total greatness in every aspect imo Phil's singing has a a primal feel in his exertion but overall smooth & ease at leading the listener s emotionally with his tone. This is my #2. #1bein COMING IN THE Air TONIGHT I mean #1 over ALL I've everd heard in my lifetime. Idk what it is I just feel glad you hear it it's good🎵🎶
this is fun... I'd forgotten about this. better than I remembered. Phil is a monster... I'd have to refer you back to his first appearance as drummer with Genesis. back to 1971, Phil on drums, Steve Hackett on guitars, and Peter Gabriel on vocals. just dig right in with the first track The Musical Box. would love to see that reaction.
Phil Collins is my dad's favorite artist so I've heard his songs (solo and with Genesis) my whole life. But I love watching your reactions because it gives me a new appreciation for his music. It's almost like I'm hearing them for the first time again.
If you’re enjoying the Phil Collins journey, I think you should check out “Against All Odds.” And if you’d like to see the singer he was playing drums behind, start watching Peter Gabriel. “In Your Eyes”, “Sledgehammer”, or one of my favorites “Come Talk to Me”!
He played "Against All Odds" at Live Aid just him & the piano. No synth, no drums. Great display of his vocal passion. ua-cam.com/video/7A8NgPVizP4/v-deo.html
Yes, Secret World Live has been in my cd player in my 15 year old pick up for 15 years. “In Your Eyes” and “Come Talk to Me” along with “Don’t Give Up” and of course “Salisbury Hill” all emotional classics from this under appreciated genius.
It's probably in the 236 comments, but that instrument you didn't recognize was a bass pedal. That might be the only time I've seen one played with hands. They are built to be played with feet while your hands are busy playing guitar, keyboards, etc. Also probably mentioned was that the drummer of the recording was Phil himself. The man in the video, Chester Thompson, is also an excellent drummer. I enjoyed this video. Thanks for reminding me what it was like to watch Phil's solo career take shape. I was locked in with him until his But Seriously album which was good but not what I was in it for. His songs in Tarzan are what my kids first knew him for, and those were really good.

Phil Collins was raised by a very strong woman.
Saw that concert in Saint Louis in the late seventies at the Fox with Gabriel as lead singer and Collins on drums. Little Feet as the backup band.
Phil Collins is also the owner of the largest private collections of items from the Alamo.
I played the album Duke so much I literally wore it out and had to buy a new one, lol

Now you need to react to "You'll Be in My Heart". My favorite song of Phil Collins. He is a legend.
Please. I'm eating here.
Phil is EVERYTHING!!!
this is one of my favorite songs. Ive loved it for years. Sounds great in the car...when youre pissed lol
Phil made the drums sing, it was like they became part of the backing vocals. You can always tell when he's provided the drums as a guest artist on another artistes album. I've always loved this track, one if Phil's most powerful tracks in my humble opinion.
This is by far one of Phils great tracks that is seldom known. and yet its right up their with
'In the air tonight.
YAAAAASSSS!!!❤ My theme song!❤️
Suuuuuuch a great song.
The other drummer is Chester Thompson He has been with Phil since the 80's solo career, also the Bass player, and lead guitar
Phil is a legend
He will always be one of my top performers he is an amazing talent
I've seen him as solo and Genesis 3x. Every performance was incredible. The whole band always showed up to show out. And Phil was great at making sure everyone in the band was recognized. Just an amazing performer
Genesis 10x, solo Phil tours 4x. 😊
@@kbrewski1omg I am so envious ..so wish I had been able to go to just one concert
@ASaaaxxx
Odds are that I'm older than you. But Genesis did their farewell tour in 21>22.
This little brittish dude has some of the best vocals of all time! I love me some Phil Collins!!
The Brits ruled back in the day with the music
Take Me Home and I Wish it Would Rain Down are 2 more great Phil C songs!
Oh how I love Phil! My 17 yr old son discovered him recently and it makes me proud to hear him listening to this icon! Phil is a legend!
This was my anthem when I was in a bad relationship and needed strength to leave. My favorite song to this day.
Taking those steps myself soon.
@@angeladean1454 Prayers headed your way. Follow your heart.
You know what: MINE TOO. Never heard anything quite like it before or since. Really doesn't sound like anything else...from 1982...to the current day. The Live versions over the years were great as well
Yes YEs Yes. So many people just do In the Air Tonight but there is so much awesome to him.
Don't think there's any Phil Collins songs you wouldn't like. He's awesome!
Phil Collins also has a very romantic, very tender side. Hie, along with Paul McCartney, also writes the best love songs
Genesis was my first concert! It was The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, 1974. It was epic!!!
I love that you love Phil!! Keep it going!!
It’s IN THE AIR TONIGHT my friend 👍 this was my all time favorite of PHIL COLLINS/Genesis was the name of the group back in the day 🥰😘 live your reactions ❤️
Phil was a WORLD CLASS DRUMMER
It's like if British industrial rock and Motown vocals clashed.... Which is so freaking unique and timeless. A man of the era
Yep
Well he did cover You Can't Hurry Love so I think it's fair to assume that he was influenced by Motown
Phil also acted a few times in the hit tv show, Miami Vice, and his music was used.
Look up "Miami Vice - In the Air Tonight" on youtube to see a clip
My friends and I used to call them "Phil fill ins." He is the best drummer alive imo
Yes Indeed. Chester Thompson was outstanding as well.
Phil Collins is a musical genius! So glad you did this song!!!
He was able to take his personal heartbreak to the bank❤️
Music for the soul ❤
The lyircs are exactly how you kick a narcissist out of your life
Every single thing he touched was and is epic❤❤❤❤
This man was the definition of talent Some of the best song writing skills on the planet Phill was not my favorite artist but This man could make you feel what he was singing about The song In The Air Tonight Was our Prom song at my high school in 1988
he wrote this supposedly after going through his divorce. his emotions are shining through in this song. his talent in all his songs is outstanding! thank you!
I'm so glad you loved it!!! Phil Collins is a legend!!!
One of my favorite songs of all time!! Great reaction!!
Idk what it is I just feel glad you hear it it's good🎵🎶
Best breakup song ever!!
"Cathartic " is the word for this song.
What a joy to watch you listen to a song I have loved forever. 🤩
He's tough, sweet and unpredictable. I watched the video with Genesis called " Mama"- this is an intense and provocative one.
One of my favourite songs from Phil Collins is You'll be in my heart. Beautiful, beautiful song full of emotions
Phil Collins I Missed Again. Another upbeat with a cool horn section.
GOAT.
Kinda the way grandma is feeling ❤ ✌️ Polo ❤
Try Peter Gabriel's "Games Without Frontiers". He and Phil are genius.
this is fun... I'd forgotten about this. better than I remembered. Phil is a monster... I'd have to refer you back to his first appearance as drummer with Genesis. back to 1971, Phil on drums, Steve Hackett on guitars, and Peter Gabriel on vocals. just dig right in with the first track The Musical Box. would love to see that reaction.
one of our best musicians ever. Such passion and deliverance. Thank you as I am so new channel and you rock!!
He started as drummer then to lead singer with group Genesis. I thank God I grew up in the 70’s to experience some of the best music ever!
Phil Collins is my dad's favorite artist so I've heard his songs (solo and with Genesis) my whole life. But I love watching your reactions because it gives me a new appreciation for his music. It's almost like I'm hearing them for the first time again.
One of my favs
If you’re enjoying the Phil Collins journey, I think you should check out “Against All Odds.”
And if you’d like to see the singer he was playing drums behind, start watching Peter Gabriel. “In Your Eyes”, “Sledgehammer”, or one of my favorites “Come Talk to Me”!
Man, Against All Odds was *it* for me back in the day! The melody, the way he sings it. *chefs kiss*
Love this song
