      Yea! Haha we were just talking about this. I adore it. It’s more expensive than one should probably spend for gouache but I proved to myself with the $20 box that I will cherish and use and it won’t sit in a shelf. :) did you get your Spanish one it yet? I still can’t get over that you were able to just order it haha I ordered one myself because I just couldn’t believe it. Haha

      @@JaredCullum I am saving up to buy a handmade one for watercolors, but I figure the cheap one will do for now. My order went through Chicago on June 1 and hasn't been updated since. It's probably sitting on a dock somewhere :p I'm glad you ordered one, it's crazy how you can only get them from Spain! They go in and out of stock pretty often as well from what I hear. If nothing else you'll have it as a backup, I don't blame you for ordering it!

    Definetly want to get back into gouache, it's somehow less intimidating than watercolour?

    Really like this painting Jared. With the pops of color from the underpainting, would you say that you make conscious choices to leave it in specific spots, or is it intuitive as you go what pops through and what gets covered? I've been thinking a lot about under paintings and the effect they have on our work, and I'll probably do a video about it soon. I'll be honest, the more i think about it the more of an enigma it becomes to me!

    • @JaredCullum
      @JaredCullum  3 роки тому +1

      No- I don’t make any plan and leave it to chance. Sometimes it works great. A lot of times I cover it all over by accident. I tend to paint very dull- color wise so I have to do some tricks up front to fool myself into integrating higher key elements

    • @DannySabraArt
      @DannySabraArt 3 роки тому +1

      @@JaredCullum that makes sense. It seems like such a versatile technique, especially by using different colors. When I use underpainting I almost always end up covering it up too. But I like when it peeks out it’s just hard for me to remember to leave some sometimes!

    *for whoever knows the answer.
    I'm curious about something, since you don't exactly need a lot of water for gouache, does it make a difference if the paper is cotton or not? it also lifts easily, so I'm wondering if something else makes it preferable instead of other types of paper.

    • @DannySabraArt
      @DannySabraArt 3 роки тому +1

      I don't think you need cotton paper, but I enjoy using it because it can take more abuse and I also like to paint with wet washes in parts of my paintings. But I've painted on mixed media paper and you can paint on bristol as well. That might be even better if you want all of your paint to sit on top and not sink in at all. I think it's mostly a preference thing but you definitely don't NEED cotton paper.

    • @JaredCullum
      @JaredCullum  3 роки тому +1

      Wow- great question. I have not noticed specifically.. I use arches 140 lb which is cotton. I don’t know what is in illustration board but that is my favorite to work on. I haven’t thought about it much. Good question- sorry I can’t be more help on it.

    • @q8asami
      @q8asami 3 роки тому +1

      @@DannySabraArt i see, so ultimatly it's just prefrance and not an issue with performance like in watercolor.

    • @q8asami
      @q8asami 3 роки тому

      @@JaredCullum no problem Jared, in the end. you picked it because you like how it feels so that's a good enough answer for me.

    • @DannySabraArt
      @DannySabraArt 3 роки тому +1

      @@q8asami I think so. I prefer cotton because I use wet washes but if you never paint very wet I don’t think it matters too much as long as the paper has enough body. You want enough gsm as you would with any water media but I think tooth and absorbency is just going to be personal preference.

    Is it true that white should be used minimum in Gouache to avoid chalky look?

    • @JaredCullum
      @JaredCullum  3 роки тому

      Gouache can get chalky- that’s true. I think it’s a good general rule to try to hold off on white in gouache or oil/acrylic because it kills the color with coolness. You have to temper it with warmth or the whole picture looks bleached.

    Why don't you blend when you need soft edge?

    • @JaredCullum
      @JaredCullum  3 роки тому

      Good question- I often do- or I try to work quickly enough to get a lush oil paint looking blend. In these studies I’m typically more interested in the light and atmosphere and don’t spend too much time dwelling on anything else. But softened edges is a great tool for depth
