    Just found your channel yesterday and I don't know why it took so long. Not only are you so wonderfully skillful, but generous with your technique and knowledge. I'm absolutely hooked.

    I love these gouache videos..wondering if you find the M Graham gouache less matte than other brands due to the honey? I did a sketch yesterday and had one shiny patch next to the nice velvety arteza..

    • @abby4684
      @abby4684 2 роки тому

      Usually when I build it up thin to thick It drys matte. It isn’t the type I would use without at least a bit of water though, maybe that is the issue?

    • @JaredCullum
      @JaredCullum  2 роки тому

      Interesting.. I never experienced that with the M Graham. Or at least I haven't noticed it looking shiny. I sold the painting I did with Arteza awhile back or I would compare them. That's fascinating.

      Thank you! My illustration work has ramped up so I don’t have as much time. Although- I have plans to start doing 2 a month again- the second being a live demo sit-down.
      The patreon video is not edited. So I talk for the full hour or more. I only edit out large shapes so it doesn’t get too tedious. It’s a $1 to access them- I suppose it depends on if you have patience haha I know some people find a full demo boring since it’s longer.

    What is your opinion on acrylic gouache? Why to use it if we could use a acrylics?

    • @JaredCullum
      @JaredCullum  3 роки тому

      I love the matte texture of it over the glossy acrylic finish. I don’t use often- I have kind of nestled into watercolor and gouache.

    What is your opinion on arteza gouache?

    • @JaredCullum
      @JaredCullum  3 роки тому

      I think it’s fine for student work. It’s extremely cheap- but with that- cheaply made. It falls apart easily. But it is affordable and you have to use a lot of paint to learn how to paint.

    Why do you like hot pressed over cold pressed?

    • @JaredCullum
      @JaredCullum  3 роки тому +1

      Cold pressed is very textured it absorbs watercolor very well but I cannot control the layering of paint as precisely as I like on it. Hot press is smooth and the paint layers on top very easily. I know plenty who use cold press and love it though.

    Are you using the spanish palette by la petite palette by chance? If yes, what do you think? Would you buy it again?

    • @JaredCullum
      @JaredCullum  3 роки тому

      This is an original Spanish palette from Spain. I love it for what it is. It’s not very well made. It’s just the standard cheats box over there- it’s just difficult to find anywhere else. I have a friend in Spain I had mail one to me. It was only $20.
      I have used La petite before and he does make a very nice box. I don’t know that you NEED it haha it’s a bit of overkill for gouache. I’d be happy to share mine if you want to try it before you commit to a big investment. I just had a friend custom build me a box for gouache so I’m happy to lend this one to you to try out the size.

      @@JaredCullum That is an incredibly generous offer, thank you! I appreciate it! I'll pass for now though, I actually am interested in it for watercolor instead of gouache. I generally prefer to work in full pans and I also don't like the big mixing wells on the Roberson boxes so that's how I landed on it. I can't believe you can get them from Spain for $20! I need to look into that.... not that I don't want to support La Petite but the cost + wait time is a little bit intimidating. Actually if you're interested in *selling* yours to me, clean or not, I would love to discuss!

    • @JaredCullum
      @JaredCullum  3 роки тому

      Hi Sarah! Sorry I’m late to respond- been a busy month.. well.. it’s not that I’m NOT willing to sell it but it is beaten up pretty bad and I’ve used it a lot for the past few years so it has some cracks here and there. We may be better off finding you a new one if we could convince someone in Spain to mail it over haha but if you want to try it I don’t mind sending it to you. The wells are about double full pan size so it’s a great size. I had my new one custom built with extra large wells for gouache. So email me if you want Jared.cullum@gmail.com - shipping would be nice but I feel bad “selling” it and would be fine with just mailing it to you. I bet you could clean it up and even repair the crack with white refrigerator repair paint.

      @@JaredCullum You are SO incredibly generous!!! Fortunately after you told me it was a cheaper palette from Spain I did some research and found them on Artemiranda. es. They were out of stock at the time but came back into stock a couple of weeks ago so I ordered one! It should be here in the next few weeks. :) In any case, you have been amazingly generous and kind, I can't thank you enough, and I'm looking forward to getting my own finally! :D

    anyone here knows if gouache would work well on a cold press illustration board??

    • @JaredCullum
      @JaredCullum  2 роки тому +1

      It works great. I have friends that use cold press exclusively for gouache. I happen to really like hot press smooth surface. I feel like I can layer better on it.
