    The way you describe light and color makes them sound like an actual person. You communicate with your painting and it excites and inspires me to experience what you do. I can't multi-task when I watch your videos cuz you give so much insight and tips on painting. I have to rewind to some parts to see what you see and reflect on how to apply the technique to my next study XD Lovely piece! Most times, when I'm painting from reference, I tend to copy pixel by pixel but your works always shows a certain you-ness to them.

    Great composition and good representation of color-I liked the lack of blending which compliments the slight aspect of abstraction in the finished piece. I strive for looks like this, but frequently am caught up in detail. This gives me insight in keeping it simple. Thanks for the excellent demo.

    this is the most helpful lesson/speed painting video that i've seen for gouache. i've definitely been treating it like watercolor and too preciously. love the idea of doing a whole piece with one fat paintbrush. can't wait to try it. thanks for sharing. i learned a lot!

      Carole Pivarnik yea/ I have just thrown one on the cart here at the local blick occasionally because I never know when I need one. They’re sturdy and thin. Most the little plastic palettes are so bulky and oddly designed.

    Always interesting to watch and hear the way you work. Theres plenty of stuff online that lets you see the outer working but not many let us in on the inner working, rather than other stuff they were thinking about at the time. I'd love to hear more about the stuff you were talking about as you first blocked things in. Nice to see you using gouache the way it is meant to be used, thick enough to recognisably be gouache.

    Your narration is terrific and helpful for me. thank you and thanks for including the reference photo in the corner. That is very very helpful to see how you interpret it -- a problem I have as a beginner who tries to paint way too realistically (and does not nail it). I appreciate your comments on using gouache like oil and advice for adding some cast shadows to break up white space. You rock, sir. :-)

    I just stumbled across your videos today and they're so nice, definitley added quite a few to my watchlist. This was really helpful as I'm just starting out with gouache, I'm quite new to painting in general and have almost exclusively used watercolours before so I definitley made the mistake you mentioned about treating it as watercolours. I tend to start out with a lot of water and then it looks quite odd at the end with the mix between quite watery areas and the chunks of thicker paint. I think treating them more like oils is probably the way forward for me, I imagine it'll make me a bit less afraid to just put down a lok of paint as I tend to be more bold the few times I've used oil paint, I'll keep that tip in mind. It's very nice to hear you talk about your approach and your art is wonderful.

      Malinnlis L glad you found me on here. :) I know what you mean. I did that a long time because I am primarily a watercolor painter and couldn’t get over the differences. Have you checked out Lena Rivo on here? She’s incredible and offers great comments on some of her videos. Also a tiffanie Mang and heather Martin on Instagram. Tiffanie has some tutorials you can buy that are cheap and very informative. :) good luck!

    Good to see the paint held up as long as you didn’t use too much water and the paper looked good too. I think these are great and affordable and they will encourage people to try them without a big investment. I started out with the Davinci qouache and their large tubes seem to last for ever. Thanks for the video, I would buy these if I have a need in the future.

    • @JaredCullum
      @JaredCullum  4 роки тому

      Dan Thomas Dan- they just sent me a new bundle of stuff and in it is a watercolor sketchbook I’m going to do a video comparing brands with. So you may want to wait and see if the sketchbooks are decent. So far- my best advice is to check out the Pentalic sketchbook or the etchr “perfect” sketchbook. The etchr one is awesome but terribly expensive. It’s pretty-ness May be a hold up too. I tend to be more precious with pretty books and am able to crank out more work on pentalic because they don’t cost as much. Also- the best option is probably to buy a Arches pad and cut it in half. Then take it to a print shop and have them bind it. No sketchbook will match Arches paper quality but a sketchbook doesn’t have to be perfect. I’m interested to see the Arteza sketchbook because it is much much cheaper. If it holds up well that’d be awesome.

    My background is in oils so my approach using M Graham gouache has been that method. My difficulty is always gouache tonal shift and I've heard that it isn't as much a problem with Arteza brand which makes me suspect dyes. Did you find the shift less than with MG? Thanks for your thought process detail. I find it very refreshing. And, I like your light/dark and focal point approach. It worked very well and made me especially curious on the light/dark shift thing. Thanks again.

    • @JaredCullum
      @JaredCullum  4 роки тому

      Pat Kin very good question. I didn’t notice a shift- at least that different from other brands. It could be that I’m just used to it because my background is in watercolor and then gouache. I paint in oils but not as much. I’m used to painting on a bit of a bell curve where you’re probably more used to direct color application.

    great demonstration. So I am a transparent watercolor user, never tried gouache. Does gouache dry lighter as it watercolor, or does it depend on the water content and if it is used neat from the tube?

    • @JaredCullum
      @JaredCullum  4 роки тому

      rick tracey good question. I am primarily a water color painter so I know what you mean. Yes there is a slight disparity in the same way because while the paint is wet it reflects light differently so it appears slight darker going on but it’s not really that noticeable. The later layers, with less and less water, are not as effected. :) thanks for watching

  • @billcberger
    @billcberger 4 роки тому +1

    so at end of painting, what do you do with paint left on palette? let it dry then reset tomorrow?

    • @JaredCullum
      @JaredCullum  4 роки тому +1

      Bill Berger I try not to use a lot but with palettes like this I tend to let it dry and just tap the chalky extra out into the trash. You could store it in a stay wet but i don’t paint enough gouache to warrant continuously keeping it wet/workable.

    Hi Jared I envoy each and every video of your sketches , I learn a lot from them. What kind of paper you use? Did you avoid paper with texture? I’m using Canson 180 and the texture of it makes it difficult to handle thin leyers of color because the chroma of these color changes according texture and I see myself putting leyers over and over on a place which I rather use a transparent one. Love every one of your videos, stay home safe, blessings for you and your family.

    • @JaredCullum

      Thanks for watching, Jesus. For gouache I most often use a "hot press" paper, from arches which is a smooth surface. My favorite to work on is Crescent 101 board- it is illustration board. It is thick so it doesn't curl and it has a hot press surface. Hope that helps!

    • @JaredCullum
      @JaredCullum  4 роки тому +2

      yes! It's hard to move past that but I find gouache is treated best with minimal water. There is certainly room for use of water- especially in the beginning but as you build up you risk making a muddy mess more and more as you go that way.

  • @kevinle625

    Did you experience the gouache cracking and drying out in your palette?

    • @JaredCullum
      @JaredCullum  4 роки тому +1

      Kevin Le absolutely. But I experience that with every brand I’ve used. M graham seems the most solid- could be the honey in it. I find gouache is easier treated like acrylics. Just use a little at a time and stick to directly from the tube.

      To be fair to them- they do offer a route for payment. They offer to give you links and you get paid off sales. I felt like I would feel like I owed them only nice things if I were getting money directly for it. I also didn’t want viewers to think “of course he says it’s good/ he wants to sell it.” So I turned that down.
