I've run a L U X E M E G A H O R N shelter in -15 farenheit with a Lite Outdoors stove in Montana. It has worked very well and seals up tight to the ground and pitches tight. But, it certainly isn't something you'd want to pack on your back very far. I'm using it while canoe camping... so running ultralight isn't as much of a concern. They are fairly affordable shelters, but there are definitely better quality and lighter shelters out there for more $$$$!
Funny how I just discovered your channel 1h ago by watching that specific adventure, and now there's the loadout to it. Thank you for sharing your experience!
I have to point out (and you may recall, I was somewhat highly critical of the outing video mistakes and poor habits) --- You've unfortunately forgot likely the very first item and most important fundamental tool on a winter outing. Have a shovel!!! It is just foolish practice and exhibiting unpreparedness in the environment with conditions you were knowingly going out in for a variety of well-founded reasons! To showcase an after trip video regarding 'items to bring doing winter' anything... having (or adding in this case) a high quality, reliable SNOW SHOVEL should have been a part of this discussion!!!
BS that you don't name what shelter NOT to use b/c you dont want to ruin your damn sponsorships. GTFO with that crap. You keep back info that could save people lives b/c $$$$.
Outdoor vitals. You had all high-end gear and still had that experience on that one night? I was hoping at least a little bit of this could’ve been blamed on your gear. Dude you should be embarrassed. You looked like you’re on your way to qualifying for the Darwin awards.
That looks like a luxe hot tent (I could be wrong) I bought a luxe mini peak xl and I am not impressed at all I wish I did not buy it looking back on it. I’ll never buy anything from them ever again.
For a hot tent, it's really important to have a snow skirt. You should put snow on top of it so you don't get a draft after pitching it and if it's a good shelter, it'll be completely sealed.
I just discovered your company after buying a whole bunch of new gear to get back into backpacking. There's always room from work gear so looking forward to buying some of your stuff.
that trip was savage. to be honest, i was like "wtf is this guy even doing" at first, especially when it came to pitching the tent. when you busted out that stove, that changed everything. you could see it in your face too dude. after watching, i attempted to pitch my lanshan 2 pro in the snow and was successful using carabiners and paracord wrapped around some branch (deadman anchor). thanks for the experience and gear pointers. am interested in the dragonwool products.
I am going to do the full AT one of these years. I'm 58 now but still hike and back pack. I do the foothills trail and go ultra light bit all my gear will need to be updated due to wear and tear im sure. I'm looking hard at yalls gear it looks to me to be a complete system that is tested and works well. Of course I probablly will not ver from my western mountaineering sleeping bags bit every thing else yes is going to be upgraded. Love yalls 100 mile challenge on the AT or should I say 101 mile plus. That 35 mile night been there done that to the point I was delirious and couldn't tell if I had the map upside we down or not LOL. Great job guys 💪👍🇺🇲⚡
Oh I must say camping gear sure has came a long way since I started. I remember we had a outfitter store that had alot of the latest gear and had backpacker magazine to read about new gear and reviews and campmor catalog was great for r gear and that was it. I started out with a seva 123 white gas stove and a aluminum small coffee pot Collen fletcher complete backpacker old school 4 sure) for cook wear and lived off mash potatoes, grits , and slim Jim's and the good ole gorp. Love what yall are doing with your company and R&D is spot on.
Great video. I would be interested in that shelter. I have been looking at the Luxe hiking gear rocket tarp. You guys have great products. I really enjoy most of your gear. Keep it up and can't wait for new and improved gear

This trip was amazing. I would love to see a multi day trip in the snow with the new shelter. I’m constantly blown away with how much stuff you get in that 45L pack.
You should look into selling a OutDoor Vitals. . .Mid shelter/tent a floorless pyramid tent single pole shelter....they make a great Ultralight 4 season shelter...but pack down small...you can also use two trekking poles...
Liked the video and the advice. I read through several comments as well; some of them commenting about the severity of 41degrees below “freezing.” Perhaps forgetting that 41 below freezing is “just” 11 degrees below zero. Still qualifies as cold.
I just wanted to comment about your commercial before this video, The bulky sleeping bag that you were showing looked like a wiggy ultralight sleep system. I have one of those, it is my hunting sleeping bag, I have been soaking wet and crawled into mine and since it is a synthetic bag, it doesn't care that you are wet, it wicks it away and you can get warm fast. I would never take a down sleeping bag hunting...Wiggy has a place. But I agree it's not a backpacking sleeping bag
@outdoorvitals, if you want a bit of an upgrade for a saw, the silky f180 saw weighs 5.5 oz, has a 6.5 inch blade (so very similar specs to your gerber saw) but a significantly more efficient and durable blade thats pulse hardened. Its pretty crazy how much faster it cuts through wood.
I agree, I don’t know what shelter your getting next but a shelter that puts you sideways to the stove will be warmer. Good trip though, rough conditions, you did well. I think Seek Outside or Kifaru used to make a shelter like that years ago and probably stopped because it wasn’t popular for that reason
In the military the coldest I faced a -24° F streak and a blizzard. A bivy and 0° bag as well as never taking off my boots or clothes saved my life. Many went to the hospital and almost all of us had nerve damage in our feet
I use a -15° summit series bag and it is a fantastic product. I have converted to hammock camping and I pretty much just flipped it over and I use it as my top quilt and it is great
Love the content. Unfortunately here in Florida it doesn’t get cold enough to use a lot of the cold weather items but some reason I still feel like I still have to buy the equipment just in case.
I would love to try some hiking in some of the drier areas that OV goes to backpack. Florida is just way humid and hot most of the year but I still get out there and live ultralight on the Florida trail.
One quick question about your shelter. Why did you go with a shelter without a floor? As I watched the original video, I was surprised to see a floorless shelter and all of your stuff covered in snow. I could see using on in summer, when the wind and snow isn't a factor, but that just seemed to allow wind and snow to blow through unimpeded.
Great question...In the summer there are bugs and snakes that you might have to battle, while in the winter those things fade away. The other reason is, when you're using a stove it's not very safe to have a floor in there, but really that snow should have not gotten in there. If the shelter had been able to pitch as I would have liked I would have been able to seal the edges. I actually talk about this in depth in this interview (ua-cam.com/video/2H_7tx8bLyU/v-deo.html) but really your floorless shelters should be able to pitch right to the snow OR have snow skirts on it to seal up nice and tight! As you saw...this didn't work the way I would have liked!
Hey OV Tribe! 1st let me say that I am a loyal fan and subscriber and owner of some OV product. I’m here for the many thing I like. But I am still confused with the continued non-promotion and non-usage of what we might expect you to promote and use. Like your insulated sleep pads. Why on earth are they not good enough for you to use? I think you’ve said the OVs are in the 4.5 R value like the one you used in the video. And supplementing with a foam pad is fine. But if yours aren’t good enough for you , then how can OV expect them to be good enough for their customers? I don’t know. I still support OV and continue to make some purchases but still wonder about the marketing. ✌️✌️
Hey John, Great questions. We do still mainly use our own insulated sleeping pads. However they are currently warm in temperatures 20º F and above (or a little bit colder if you supplement it with a foam pad like you mentioned.) However in temperatures like we had on this trip where it got to -9º F, Tayson needed to use a different pad. We do test other brands as we explore what's out there on the market, and how we can improve and innovate. We hope to eventually release a warmer pad, but are still in the research & development stage for that!
Great questions John. The honest answer is a little complecated, but I'll give it my best shot. Our pads were designed a handful of years ago and based on the rating system at that time and our own usage we gave our pads an estiamted 4 R-Value. However last year the testing method for pads was changed / uniformed causing pads designed similar to ours to actually get re-rated and those R-Value ratings dropped. While we still rate those pads based on our own field usage, we are working as fast as we can on more pads! Expect a new pad in 2022 from OV. We are no longer ordering the older pads currently on our website, but that change won't come until later in the year...As OV has grown, our standards have grown and we expect more out of our gear. I would have been using our prototype pad however it was off getting R-Value tested at this time. Great question!
Thanks for the quick and honest response. I have the long insulated pad and love it. But I haven’t had it below 25 degrees. I can totally appreciate that you need to use other products for your R&D. I sometimes wish we heard more comments that fortify the many products you have and are totally field worthy in the conditions they were intended. I appreciate your excellent customer service and support. ✌️
