Use your snowshoes to clear a spot for your shelter (take them off and rake the snow with them). Pile snow around the shelter, up onto it a few inches, to block all wind and add some insulation. Leave about a 1' spot on the downwind side with no snow piled onto the shelter. Lay your longer fire wood through there and pull it in as you need it. A Gore-Tex bivy can make a huge difference in a tent without good wind protection. Great video and greeting from MN

The cold-dumb feeling, the panic and fear when the wind was giving you a hard time, and the absolute relief at getting the fire going. This perfectly exemplified what camping is like, especially in deep winter. Hugely relatable, great job!

That feeling of when you're so cold and you realize that you may have to either make it work or turn around is so familiar to winter camping. I love getting out there all year around and especially soaking up the winter beauty, but watching you go through that was a REAL reminder of how important it is to bring the right gear and expect the worst, when it comes to that time of year. (One could even say how VITALLY important it is! LOL). Thanks for sharing - I love watching all your videos.

Ultralight means you have to pack smarter than the weather or anyone else does, especially in doing winter camping. LoneWolf 902 could teach you a few lessons. Right off the bat from watching the first 5 minutes of your program.....I caught several things you didn't do.....Face covering- a full face covering to protect you from the winds and freezing cold is required, especially if you have a sensitivity to cold, which seems to be the case. A second pair of gloves to keep your hands warm and heat warmer packets for those vital parts of your Being that are sensitive to cold. A ground tarp for making the floor of your tent! A shovel and folding saw for wood cutting. You didn't use the snow to cover the edges of your tent, which would stop the flow of cold air coming in. I would have used a stronger pole for the tent, not a ski pole! A ski pole isn't the tool for a winter storm to pitch a tent. And where is the fly for the tent???? That would have created a secondary wall over the basic tent you had and allowed for the stove to create a heat barrier between the two layers of tent. That would have kept you warm. This spur of the moment planning sucked! The last thing you need to experience is frostbite, which you admitted already has happened twice! In addition, pitching a tent in the cover of trees is smart, because they give shelter from the winds! Doing this in the wide open space...dumb!
Please don't do a video like this again!

Since when is -9F the same as -40c? If it was -40c you would not survive dressed like that. -9F I can believe.

  • @matthewg7835
    @matthewg7835 2 роки тому +3

Build up a little snow around the bottom of the tent all around and tuck the tent low to the ground and cover it with snow leaving some of it open on the leeward side. This will block all the wind from coming in and robbing all the heat plus stop the snow storm you had inside your tent. Open all vents on tent to help control condensation. Annnnd setup camp in the trees not out in the open for more wind protection.

Great video and channel! As a guy that regularly camps in Canada in these extreme temperatures without stove (often to -25C) I see a couple of mistakes that will help in future. Gaitors are always your friend and keeps your lower legs both dry and significantly warmer - especially when snoeshoeing as removes all the rear . Keep your snowshoes on until your camp is setup, once you level if you leave it ~15 mins it will freeze over nicely as a base. I know you didn't have a shovel with you but generally digging down your space will create a natural wind barrier for your UL tent. Small hyropaks (500-1L) that you can keep in an interior pocket will never freeze with body heat. I love that you identified you weren't thinking clear - been there and done that and it's when you don't recognize it becomes a major problem and could become life threatening. Winter camping provides an entirely new element - that always needs an out plan. I have sucked up my pride a few times and hiked out based on conditions. Stay safe!!

Next time bring some 12 hr. hand warmers to put in your boots/shoes with your socks on top. You'll have warm boots/shoes and socks. Put a few in the foot box of your sleeping bag. They would make great firestarters for your stove. I have camped many times in -10 F. day time and -20 F night time temp.. I just use a Zero degree sleeping bag in shelters and cowboy camping. I just sleep in a T-shirt. Always nice and warm. Love having no bugs.

The Stove is a Seek Outside Large U-Turn Stove. I don't want to say the tarp as I won't be using it again and don't want to push the company down, but I upgraded for my next trip in a few weeks to a Seek Outside Silex. Doing that also lost a hand full of ounces of weight out of my shelter and gave me a much better stove placement and pitch. Thanks!

Last winter I made it through the night at these temps, but getting up and getting dressed was hell. Could not get warm, could not get my stove working (turns out the trusty stove chose that moment to fail) and ended up just throwing on clothes and running out to get warm, leaving all my gear to pick up later. I'm looking forward to seeing your gear list and your thoughts about each item. Each step in such extremes muse be carefully planned, the simple act of getting out of a comfy bag and getting dressed is even a challenge that must be carefully executed. One thing I love about solo camping in tough conditions - the mundane details of your entire life become this chess game that must be planned six moves in advance.

I think your temperature conversions are off. -41 is deceiving and feels click baity, at -40 Celsius and Fahrenheit are approximately the same temperature. You say -41 multiple times in this video and ur pack list video, but then you also call it -9 and and 0 degrees. I understand hyperbole works well for advertising and viewership, but for trying to ascertain how the gear you make and use perform at different temperatures it is important to accurately portray the temperatures you are using the gear in. I’m confused as to what the actual temperatures of this trip was?

An awesome trip Tayson. Definitely type 2 fun and the only reason is because you got the fire going. An external heat source does make all the difference in the world. Is that the new super secret trekking pole tent you guys are working on? Awesome colour and a stove jack to boot! With a good internal bug tent for the buggy months this could be the ultimate shelter. I'm so in for that!!!!!

By the way, try your closed cell foam on top of your inflatable. Sounds counter intuitive but it works.

My solo winter tent is a Tarptent Moment DW (DOUBLE Wall) with an optional "Crossing pole" but shortened 5" and run UNDER the fly. It makes the fly more wind resistant and will handle a wet snow load better. My lightest tent is a Tarptent NOTCH Li (Dyneema) similar to the Moment DW but narrower and held up with ski/hiking poles.
I won't tent camp in winter without a double wall tent which ALSO means a built in floor. A fly and no floor as seen here is NOT fun in winter, IMHO.

I've noticed you started to sell on Amazon in the UK. I have your winter down hybrid quilt on my wishlist. How much of that is synthetic and what sort of synthetic stuff are we talking? It's always like 80 percent humidity here so I love the idea of a hydrophobic down and synthetic mix.

Warm water bottle in bed is simple.
    roughly 200-ish°F to start with
then about 90-ish°F in your bag the am.....why do I say this?
Cuz it appears it stays warm for hours....yep....because your body heats it from your 98°f body heat
    just my 2 cents

Somthing is amiss here buddy. You said -9f or - 41c
    But -40 f = -40c
Better check the math. They come together at that point.
Very few people have seen an actual 40 below. Even here in north dakota, it only happens every few years.

Yep. Since I fly fires all summer that’s all I get is winter. Still fun and challenging. My pack with food n water for the cold is 18-20lbs for 2 days. I use the burrito method for bags and listen to pods to get me to sleep. I have never needed a fire, just a good meal. Although I do use my rainbow 2 for keeping the spindrift out. What wait?! A fire place! Holy cow!

I see that often too....A tent with no bottom..is a tarp. Keeps the snow from getting too cold I guess :)

I super enjoyed this video! Being an avid car camper (summer time only) and with kids who are now adults I feel it's time for a change and I'm looking to get out there on trail. Obviously I'm a huge YT trail channel content connoisseur. I love hiking related vids and this one in particular had a very honest and genuine vibe. Obviously being able to see the snow wreaking mini havoc in the wind live is a lot more informative than someone just explaining it. Plus, although I luuurve gear videos and surely this is one, it's very lowkey.

Starting late, not wearing a coat, core temperature dropping, sleep system with not a low enough R value (and not tested within 10degrees), driving out with a dodgy battery... seemed like this was a litany of things that, had they gone wrong, could have been pretty serious. Made very interesting and useful watching but maybe not for the reasons you were planning :-) . Thanks for the video.

Why tf didn't you pile up snow in the wind side, to block the wind? And your snowshoes can sweep snow away...and you picked a wide open windy spot after passing the exact same style place.... and your water should be kept by your body. Intaking ice cold water doesn't help your body preserve heat, it does the opposite. So I'm guessing you make videos for clout with 0 actual skills and knowledge. These youtubers need to stick with video games.

You definitely should have packed up the snow around the edge of your tent to stop the wind from coming in.

On your little stroll outside you said you couldn’t last out here, does that mean that the
Nova pro is not suitable for -41 below? Will you guys be releasing a bigger puffer for extreme colds?

You've just convinced me not to buy the Mountainsmith Mountain Shelter LT... The fact the walls don't come down to the ground and it lets in so much wind, it's nothing but a piece of junk...

Outdoor Vitals: my friend, you are definitely outdoors, but this is not vital.
You say that you have had frostbite multiple times before because of this sort of endeavor. You were an hour or two away from leaving your poor wife to raise your child without a dad, because of a moderate wind, combined with an inadequate tent, lack of training, and poor planning. And that’s with your car within a few minutes’ walking distance.
A very experienced and well-trained outdoorsman doesn’t need much to be very comfortable in almost any environment. You, my friend, are not that man.
But it doesn’t have to be that way.
At the very least, you need some decent training. Do you have enough experience now to know that you’ve gotten yourself in trouble, and were no time away from things going steeply sideways for lack of training on your part. All just a few minutes from your own car.
I can’t imagine that any outfitter or supplier would be proud to have you endorse their survival products, as we all saw how your skills that work together with that tentage and gear to find you freezing to death in the tent because the wind was blowing moderately. You made it look pretty bad and inadequate.
For the state of your family, if you’re not willing to invest in actual training, or more adequate gear and actual training, have the wisdom and intelligence to at least have a really good friend take you out a few times and teach you about how to manage for even the shortest and closest winter camping trip. Please. Anyone else would have the good sense to be embarrassed about this display of abject incompetence. There is no reason whatsoever for which your life should be in danger because you’re in the woods getting a few pictures, other than you really do not know what to do. There is no reason whatsoever for which this shouldn’t have been a comfortable and safe experience-even if the wind blows.
    Please.
