EPS was the default file format for Illustrator 4. It's the basis of PDF, which is actually an enhanced version of EPS. You can output a PostScript text file of an EPS or PDF file for troubleshooting a particularly complicated graphic. In a graphics class I was in, the teacher had us writing PostScript by hand to understand how it works. It is a Turing-complete programming language. I know EPS and PDF are hand-editable because they are PostScript.
I remember when PDF first came to be, it was touted as a common readable document platform. But the real reason behind it was its ability to embed the typefaces in the document, with only the limited characters actually in use , so you didn't have to share the whole fontset as separate files. Thus giving font vendors like Adobe better control over their portfolio. Designers and print shops used to share fonts to a vast degree which was technically illegal. Adobe released the PDF-format to put an end to that, and I believe was actually surprised by the rapid uptake in the industry as it quickly became the standard to ready and share work for printing.
Designer here - Always work in .ai and psd. If you ever need to change something based on a client etc, you can without any errors, or relinking problems. It will save time and money! (Save as a copy) for previewing proofs, or sending them. Or just snip or screenshot the proofs. Working in .ai and .psd is basically being the master collector.

didn't you just watch the video? Design in cmyk for print and export in PDF. For web, design in RGB and export in svg. For clients, package the design and include every format so you look professional.

I don't get it. Why is SVG "not ideal for printing?" The video makes it looks like "just because some people said so." Is there an actual technical reason behind this, excluding if your vector illustration contains meshes and/or masks? Let's say I want to print a flat logo. Is there any downside in printing as an SVG in that case?
Inkscape's default format is SVG but it transfers seamlessly between SVG and EPS. SVG was designed to be used with HTML since PostScript doesn't have a good way to do this. Printer drivers will rasterize whatever image is sent to it to match the printer's resolution. To say SVG is 'just' for web pages is like saying PostScript is 'just' for printer fonts.
opinions? comments? thank you, I'm asking about... .if you are the designer, you design to the client the flyer, cards and a new logo. .now you have the .ai and .cdr files it includes texts, photos (proveided by the client and others taken by you), and the main logo and slogan. .some people insist: *never give to theclient the a.i or the .cdr file* , (never give to the client the editable). _I say_ : the client pays for the design, and the designer nothing has to do with ther files, useless to me (as a designer), of course I have a copy in my storage. I don't have to do anything with the files, if still we are working on them as client/designer relationship, otherwise if we aren't working more with that client, that's the same 'cause useless files to me, just to add them as a "show" in my portfolio,

I don’t know why that should matter, you can package the project to include fonts for sharing and share the package if you like.
Suzann Fulbright The PDF-format was introduced in the early 90’s, and publishing software was pretty different back then.

It is not a 'dying' format. EPS is the basis for PDF and an excellent option for exchanging vector files between different programs.

No loss of detail. It all depends on the rasterization detail of the printer.
