That was awesome. I picked up a round chair from facebook market place that has a hole in the center. So, Iam going to unravel it and redo the thing after first refinishing the chair. Thanx for showing how to weave the rattan seat.😊

Sincere thanks for this video and the introductory one. I’ve never done anything like this before, but really enjoyed reweaving an old round stool and the result looks surprisingly professional. The videos were an excellent guide pitched at the perfect level for a beginner.

Thanks for the video. I just started caning and I'm blessed to have a mentor. The next chair she gives me will be round. I'm gonna blow her away! Thanks again!

Thank you SO MUCH for this video! It's my first time ever hand caning a chair (though I have done many cane repairs that only require the pre-weaved press in sheet) and it came out beautifully! I echo what someone else said - this was an "excellent guide pitched at the perfect level for a beginner". I will look to you guys now for all my caning needs and also check out your store for future cane purchases. Thank you again so so much for making this experience a pleasant one! I really appreciate the time you took to make this instructional video.

Thank you for the very informative instructions on caning. Never too old to learn something new! I do upholstering and sometimes have encountered a caned chair and thought that it would be fun to learn caning.

The strands are all a variety of different lengths. I suggest trying to use the longer ones for the beginning steps and the shorts ones for the weaving.

Hi there! I've been watching your videos to prepare for trying this on my round chairs. I am hoping you have a moment to share some advice about tying off on the backside if it sits in a groove? My chairs are not flat on the bottom like the one in your video. Thanks so much for the great video!

I haven’t heard you speak about the different size canes to use. I have an antique parsons chair and I used the wrong sized cane and on step 5 no less and so I have to rip it all out and start again. It’s so sad it looked beautiful too grrr

It's easy to find the center when you have an odd number of holes in each section. What do you do when the number is even? Have 16 holes in three sections and 22 holes in the front section.

  • @rroe5718

Many years have gone by since this video's post, but if you read this I would like to know how large to drill the cane holes. I am a woodturner that is experimenting with making some small 6 inch diameter boxes and caning part of the box lid. Will be having a final diameter of about 5 inches so I don't want the holes to big but also not to small. Hope you get to see this.

Hi, there is a chart on the webpage that shows hole diameter, distance from center of hole to center of hole and the proper cane size. That info should help you out. Here's a link to that page:

I would suggest you get a complete cane kit, it contains enough cane for one seat, plus a strip of 4mm binding cane, an awl, pegging material and a full color instruction booklet, written by Cindy Hammond, the same one in the video.

My wife and I both enjoyed your video enough to tackle caning a seat in a very old rocker we have. I do have a question about color. The old caning appears to be stained, can we stain the caning to match the old or at least get close to it. Or, do we rip out the cane in the back of the chair and replace it with new.
And lastly, the hardest thing I/we found about caning is keeping the caning moist enough, seems to dry our quickly. any suggestions? Dave

    • @peerlessrattansuppliesllc7113
      @peerlessrattansuppliesllc7113  9 років тому

As far as staining - cane does have a natural finish on it - but people do stain it. It doesn't take the stain as well as wood of course - but it can be done. It's like painting on the stain. Some people spray stain and others swear by the new gel stains out there. It's a matter of experimenting to achieve your particular style.

Rol Johnson Cane quality is an industry-wide issue, we are all getting cane processed in China, it's up to the ones putting the cane hanks and coils together to choose good strands. I can't answer for Comcraft, but our cane is sold daily and we always have fresh new cane on hand at peerlessrattan.com
