  • This video gives instructions on how to weave a hand-woven chair with rattan cane strands. Brandy takes the 5 day class at Silver River Center for Chair Caning and condenses it into a little over an hour. Great for beginners, and intermediate weavers will pick up a few tips and tricks as well.
    For more information on in person classes, online tutorials, or upcoming masterclass courses, call Brandy & Dave at 828-707-4553 or email them at SilverRiverChairs@gmail.com.
    Find them at www.SilverRiverChairs.com - on instagram @silverriverchairs -or in Asheville's River Arts District. Open by appointment in 2021.

    inherited some birds-eye maple chairs with hand-woven seats, 3 of them need replacing. Thank you so much for the inspiration to try it myself. My summer is now booked!

    This video was exactly what I needed to help me weave my first round seat. You covered it all. Thank you so much!

    Excellent video! There is as you say a lot to this than can be covered in 1 hour but it was enough to get me through my first round chair seat! Very gratifying!

    I really enjoyed watching your video. 50 years ago I wove the bench seat which was square and not round. I'm thinking that I might build a bench like the one I worked on and weave the seat. Thank you for your great presentation.

      Aww...it's not that bad, but if it was easy everyone would be weaving chairs! Thank you for watching and we're glad you enjoyed our video.

    You’re amazing!! I just acquired a bentwood rocking chair with a broken seat and am contemplating what to do. The press in pre-woven rattan just don’t feel quite right and they also do not seem as simple as they appear.

    Thank you for this video! I'll probably watch it again and again after doing more chairs I did (I did 4 now). How many mm is the cane you use?

    • @silverriverchairs3686
      @silverriverchairs3686  Рік тому

      You are most welcome. Typically round chairs like this one are either super fine or fine. I'm pretty sure this was fine cane 2.5 mm. We measure each chair, never going by what the last person used....and we aren't afraid to remove work if it's looking too flimsy or too crowded. We typically go up or down a size for diagonals if we aren't happy with the spacing (too flimsy/crowded), so long as your base Steps 1-4 are the same size. In fact, early European caning was often done with tiny base Steps 1-4 and 3-4 sizes up for diagonals.

    Please can you tell me how you anchored the first tail of the cane each time please?

    • @silverriverchairs3686
      @silverriverchairs3686  2 роки тому

      The pegs anchor tails temporarily until you have enough loops to tie the tails off underneath. Caning pegs and/or golf tees are 100% necessary to the process. Thanks for watching!

      Gladly, when there is time! These videos take a long time to make! You can check with some chair caning suppliers (Link on the resources page of www.SilverRiverChairs.com) for these little pamphlets "Ideas for the Experienced Chair Caner" which give pretty good instructions. Old school publication with black & white photos but does the trick until we get you your patterns video!
