Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas 1994 [Full Album]

- The iconic debut full-length album by the original Princes of Norwegian Darkness, Mayhem. Recorded from '92 to '93, De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, or "Lord Satan's Secret Rites", was the first true release by the group, despite having formed back in 1983 by three fellow Venom fans at an AC/DC concert. The band was formed by Euronymous, bass player Necrobutcher and drummer Manheim, and was meant to be the most extreme musical group the world had ever seen or heard. Following in the footsteps of Venom, Motorhead and Celtic Frost, the group transformed speed metal into a darker, more sinister genre of music, centered around grotesque lyrics, raw sound and infamous acts of violence and radicalism. By 1987, their eagerly-awaited first work, Deathcrush, was finalized and released, selling out nearly instantly in the underground music scene of Scandinavia. The band then adopted ex-Morbid vocalist Dead and pursued a short-lived legacy as the world's most extreme band. After Dead's suicide in 1991, Euronymous began looking for a new vocalist for his upcoming epic, the album that would become De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas. Shortly before its release, Euronymous was murdered by his former friend and bandmate, Varg Vikernes, of Norwegian Black Metal band Burzum, thus bringing an end to the underground Norwegian Black Metal scene, and an end to the "True Mayhem". Though his body was left a corpse, his legacy lives on through his musical work and his ultimate creation, Mayhem.

The drummer was fucking insane!
Well, technically he was probably the only sane person in the band, but you know what I mean.
Necrobutcher is pretty fuckin legit, too bro
True, Necro was also a sane man, he left the band after he knew what Euro did with Dead's corpse
😂
HELLHAMMER!
Necrobutcher was planning to kill Euronymous but Vikernes did it first. And If the rumors are true Hellhammer took parts of Dead's skull and attached them to his drums. I think no one was sane in this band
What a nice band! I bet everyone loves each other.

Venom invented the terms of black metal, Bathory gave it the sound, and Mahem perfected it with this album.
Agreed.
Fuck no, lmao Sarcofago perfected it.
I absolutelly agree.
The thing I’ve noticed about Maniac, Dead and Attila being the voices of Mayhem is that they perfectly represented Mayhem at the time they were the vocalists in the band. Maniac’s vocals sound like... well, a crazy person’s screaming and let’s be honest... the band was crazy at the time. Dead’s vocals sound like a dying person screaming or a zombie, and he represents the deaths in Mayhem. Attila revived Mayhem’s voice so it’s appropriate that his vocals sound like an evil spirit.
Stepanov Rock, truthfully, Maniac’s vocals on Deathcrush was my favorite out of all of Mayhem’s vocalists.

I don't often pay attention to drums on black metal, but holy shit...
Hellhammer is a beast drummer.
I never thought much of mayhem, then I saw them live at A festival in Holland. Hellhammer was amazing and the band was tight as f**k. I've been a fan ever since. "wolfs lair abyss" ep is my favorite Mayhem release.
I only hear speed. Besides some fills beetween phrases are a complete nonsense. Other ones are just simple. He can hold a blast beat but a good drummer is much more than this. You should hear people like Brann Dailor from Mastodon, Neil Peart from Rush or Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater to know what a good drummer is.
Derfel Cadarn Then you don't understand black metal. It's all about atmosphere and minimalism, whis isn't supposed to be disrupted by one-man wanking
Stigma Nobody was talkin here about those things you say. They was kind of amaze of drummer. I said there is no reason for that. I think my point is correct.
The more depressed you are, the better the music sounds
Cheer up and face life pal. You can still enjoy good metal with a healthy state of mind. Mayhem + depression might be a dangerous combination.
Eh, I'm in a 100% better place mentally now than I was when I discovered this album. And it still fucking kicks ass.

Quality of the sound is not the same with quality of the video. I get it's sarcasm, but tired of comments like that.
Actually, sound quality is affected by the video resolution. I'm tired of the comments saying it's not
but then again, modern audio compression doesnt produce the same kind of 'bad quality' you'd look for in 90's black metal albums.

I looked up this band because they're widely considered the most controversial black metal band of all time. After finding out about the history of the band, I can say that this is one of the very few cases in which the band lived up to the hype surrounding them.
This album its cursed friend.
Not only that but influenced other people to follow their actions. Glen Benton from Deicide had to cancel one of their European tours for almost blowing up themselves and anyone within 100 feet of the stage to join in on the “I’m more evil than you “ tirade Mayhem started. +Thatmusictool Never thought of it that way before. Yeah it kinda sound like King is taking a massive, painful shit while singing in the "Grandma" voice from "Them".
Hahahaha exactly James Blobb
I mean it doesn't completely derail this album but it definitely makes it less menacing compared to a lot of other defining Black Metal albums
***** At first i fucking hated Atilla's vocals, but i've gotten used to them by now. But with the exception of "Burried by Time and Dust" and the title track, Attila still sucks donkey dicks on this album.
It seems to be kinda popular with a lot of bands to make good music but then have the vocals be worse than Hitler. Just look at Slilencer.
+James Blobb Yeah I feel you on that, but there's multiple times where his vocals will still make me tune out it's just that this is considered the pinnacle of BM by a lot of people and with these vocals that claim is almost hilarious. I know the riffs are badass and the drums are icy as shit but it's hard to call this the best album when the vocals aren't AS good as the instrumentation.

Black Hermit live in leipzig: am i a joke to you
I feel that the predicament with Attila's vocals stems from the fact that many people listen to this record out of context in regards to when, how and under what circumstances it was made. It's like somebody watching Nosferatu in 2017 and bitching about the special effects and how "funny" the Vampire looks.
100% truth

Love the vocals. Perfect fit for the music, and totally idiosynchratic. Really opened up my eyes to what you can do with vocals. Timelessly good in my book!
I disagree, the context can change the perception of drama and storytelling, but some solutions will work out of time, for example, some Nosferatu shots can be given to today's generations with the same effect, just cut out the correct fragment or re-edit)

1. Funeral Fog
Every time this year
This dark fog will appear
Up from the tombs it comes
To take one more life that can be near
In the middle of Transylvania
All natural life has for a long time ago gone
It's thin and so beautiful
But also so dark and mysterious
Once again the priest is messing
May the god bless us all
The fog is here again
That will complete this funeral
From a place empty of life
Only dead trees are growing here
As it comes from afar
Only dead trees are growing here

Everything here is so cold
Everything here is so dark
I remember it as from a dream
In the corner of this time
Diabolic shapes float by
Out from the dark
I remember it was here I died
By following the freezing moon
It's night again
Night you beautiful
I please my hunger
On living humans
Night of hunger
Follow it's call
Follow the freezing moon
Darkness is growing
The eternity opens
The cemetery lights up again
As in ancient times
Fallen souls die behind my steps
By following the freezing moon
3. Cursed In Eternity

Thousand times cursed in eternity
The demon flies in the blackened
Starless skies and crawls in
The bottomless depths of Hell
Condemned to wander, until it comes
To the cruelest snake that crawls
4. Pagan Fears
The bloody history from the past
Deceased humans now forgotten
An age of legends and fear
A time now so distant
Less numbered as they were their lives
So primitive and pagan
Superstitions were a part of the life
So unprotected in the dark nights
Pagan fears
The past is alive
The past is alive
Woeful people with pale faces
Staring obsessed at the moon
Some memories will never go away
And they will forever be here
5. Life Eternal
A dream of another existance
You wish to die
A dream of another world
You pray for death
To release the soul one must die
To find peace inside you must get eternal
I am a mortal, but am I human?
How beautiful life is now when my time has come
A human destiny, but nothing human inside
What will be left of me when I'm dead?
There was nothing when I lived
What you found was eternal death
No one will ever miss you
6. From The Dark Past
A face in stone... decayed by age
A man who has returned to tell of his damnation
Fears so deep, the mouth open wide
The dream died away before dawn of this time
Ancient times legends stories so dark
Blackened his sight
Now not even the memories are left
Back after such a long time
The stone is cold as death
But what formed its true fears
Only the wind is able to tell
Tell me - what did you see there
In the darkness - of the past
The eyes - stares so empty
The mouth - screams so silent
Tell me - what did you see there
In the darkness - of the past
7. Buried By Time And Dust
Visions of that no mornings
Light ever will come
I'm too old now
The dark is so near
Will I ever reach the land beyond
This is where we go when we have to die
I've been old since the birth of time
Time buried me in earth
Centuries ago I tasted blood
Buried by time and dust
Many years have passed since the funeral
Missing the blood of human throats
So many years, ages ago
I must await, feel my body's stench
Wandering out of space
Wandering out of time
A world out of light, death at the end
Only silence can be heard
Silence of peoples fears
No one knows my grave
Buried by time and dust

+A Moonwalking Robot Dancer Indeed, i don't get the hate either. They are not your usual, but why the hell would you want the usual? Music it's not a damn frozen pizza, to expect the same thing every time.
So unique.
Sarcofago is 10 times better
"THE" Original Blackmetal IMHO!
It just sounds grotesque. However on the live album vocals are absolutely perfect
I love the lack of an intro. full band, 1 2 3 go.
No fucks were given that day
xD
The music makes up for it in itself, so no need for it..
I bought this on a gut feeling in 1994. Vinyl. Was blown away.
Listening to this, I pictured a really dark, stormy setting. Like a really strong thunderstorm with super high winds and chaos happening in almost every nook and cranny in the environment.
Biography of this band is best ever
ps: pagan fears and life eternal are my favourites tracks
So brutal... (evil laughts)
I just typed "Mayhem" into the youtube search bar to see what i get, i'm not surprised it was Metal.
One of the best black metal albums, if not the best.
+Ethan Nick Maybe, right after Transilvanian Hunger and Massive conspiracy against all life.
I really love this album but Deathcrush is my morning drug🔥
same

One of the Best albums ever, so awesome vocals!!!
And the bass is absolutely killing it!
Attila's performance on this album is terrfying evil and dark.He sounds like he's singing from hell.
It's hot during the summer, so I listen to black metal to cool off
Always Negative looking on UA-cam at Pink Floyd vs gore metal

For some reason every single time I listen Freezing Moon my room starts to get cold asf
When Freezing Moon hits you just have to step back and appreciate the epicness of that opening riff. So cold... so dark!
So pure
my favorite part is the bridge riff with the drum fills... i wish it went on longer before the bridge verse "it's night again!"
What a monument this album and band have left us. A blueprint for BM for years to come!
Didn't get this at first but now I see why it's highly regarded. Love the relentless pounding that goes on from start to finish, like a jackhammer that just won't stop.
This album changed my life
That freezing moon solo is such an eargasm

Pretty interesting album knowing that the bass player killed the guitarist.
Luke I think it sucks more that the former bass player, Varg, was allowed to continue living a rather good life in jail and then go back to normal after just 21 years. He's out now and has no remorse.
Diamond NightFury How is that bad!
+Diamond NightFury well you always have to remember that Øystein was himself a piece of shit person towards Varg about his next few albums and that these guys really have no remorse for anything.
+Diamond NightFury and the time spent in prison is different compared to the States. Or anywhere else for that matter. Shit is different and as fucked up as the whole bit is there is not a thing that can be done.
Ramon Garcia Even so but they could have grown a pair each and cut ties with each other rather than have one kill the other.
Attila's vocals are so damn creepy!!! (That's a good thing) :D
I likened his vocals to Dracula
Nex Official Seig ObserverxHABIT Clearly you didn't get the joke.
Attila is an excellent vocalist and this record is brilliant. Never bettered.
Man, that sounds like shit =)
after you´ve been listenin to that new shit for some time you still come back to the real thing
I fucking love the Freezing Moon!
This album has more songs then Freezing Moon....
It does, but he likes that one too....
+wade k 21
Nice cap you douchebag. Shouldn't you be listening to whatever bongo african pop music is out there? Fuck you.
Tony God dude, fucking chill
Tony Damn bro do you just get pissed off when someone loves a certain song on an album or what?

1. Funeral Fog:
Every time this year
This dark fog will appear
Up from the tombs it comes
To take one more life that can be near
In the middle of Transylvania
All natural life has for a long time ago gone
It's thin and so beautiful
But also so dark and mysterious
Once again the priest is missing
May the god bless us all
The fog is here again
That will complete this funeral
From a place empty of life
Only dead trees are growing here
As it comes from afar
Only dead trees are growing here
Funeral fog
Funeral fog
Funeral fog
Funeral fog
2. Freezing Moon
Everything here is so cold
Everything here is so dark
I remember it as from a dream
In the corner of this time
Diabolic shapes float by
Out from the dark
I remember it was here I died
By following the freezing moon
It's night again, night you beautiful
I please my hunger on living humans
Night of hunger, follow its call
Follow the freezing moon
Darkness is growing, eternity opens
The cemetery lights up again as in ancient times
Fallen souls die behind my steps
By following the freezing moon
3. Cursed in Eternity:
My name was written with fire
In the place you only can see
When your time has come
When you walk down in the land of shadows for eternity
The demon flies in the blackened starless skies
And crawls in the bottomless depths of hell
The name which will be a thousand times cursed in eternity
The demon flies in the blackened starless skies
And crawls in the bottomless depths of hell
Condemned to wander, until it comes
To the cruelest snake that crawls
4. Pagan Fears:
The bloody history from the past
Deceased humans now forgotten
An age of legends and fear
A time now so distant
Less numbered as they were
Their lives so primitive and pagan
Superstitions were a part of the life
So unprotected in the dark nights
Pagan fears
The past is alive
The past is alive
Woeful people with pale faces
Staring obsessed at the moon
Some memories will never go away
And they will forever be here
5. Life Eternal:
A dream of another existence, you wish to die
A dream of another world, you pray for death
To release the soul, one must die
To find peace inside, you must get eternal
I am a mortal, but am I human?
How beautiful life is now when my time has come
A human destiny, but nothing human inside
What will be left of me when I'm dead? There was nothing when I lived
What you found was eternal death, no one will ever miss you
6. From the Dark Past:
A face in stone, decayed by age
A man who has returned to tell of his damnation
Fears so deep, the mouth open wide
The scream died away before dawn of this time
Ancient times legends
Stories so dark
Blackened his sight
Now, not even the memories are left
Back after such a long time
The stone is cold as death
But what formed it's true fears
Only the wind is able to tell...
Tell me! What did you see there?
In the darkness - the darkness of the past
The eyes stares so empty
The mouth screams so silent
Tell me! What did you see there?
In the darkness - the darkness of your past
7. Buried by Time and Dust:
Visions of that no mornings
Light ever will come. I'm to old now.
The dark is so near, will I ever reach the land beyond
This is where we go when we have to die.
I've been old since the birth of time.Time buried me in earth
Centuries ago, I tasted blood.
Buried by time and dust.
Many years has pasted since the funeral.
Missing the blood of human throats
So many years, ages ago.
I must await, feel my bodies stench.
Wanderings out of space.
Wandering out of time.
A world out of light, death at the end.
Only silence can be heard, silence of peoples tears.
No one knows my grave.
Buried by time and dust.
8. De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas:
Welcome!
To the elder ruins again
The wind whispers beside the deep forest
Darkness will show us the way
The sky has darkened thirteen as
We are collected woeful around a book
Made of human flesh
Heic Noenum Pax
Here is no peace
De Grandae Vus Antiquus Mulum Tristis
Arcanas Mysteria Scriptum
The books blood written pages open
Invoco Crentus Domini De Daemonium
We follow with our white eyes
The ceremonial proceeding
Rex Sacriticulus Mortifer
In the circle of stone coffins
We are standing with our black robes on
Holding the bowl with unholy water
Heic Noenum Pax
Bring us the goat
Psychomantum Et Precr Exito Annos Major
Ferus Netandus Sacerdos Magus
Reading just 2 of Dead's lyrics puts him right in the room with me. A whole complete different experience with mayhem
HEARING VARG VIKERNES 14TH SATAN SACRIFICE ON UA-cam
This album is haunted, I love it
TRUE.
This is one of the best albums that has been made in the history of albums.
it probably is
No, but probably one of the best Black Metal albums.
This is like hands down the sickest black metal album ever 🔥🔥💪🏽💯
Discos que jamas volveran a componerse, una obra de arte eterna y única!
The vocals actually sound good, like Dracula. Hungarian accent, Vlad is Romanian but it sounds close. I think I know what Euro was aiming in with Attila
Nikola Gashtarov so damn true
@Son of Northern Darkness Yeah, plus Bela Lugosi, the actor who more-or-less formed Dracula's famous voice, was a Hungarian who grew up in modern-day Romania (Literally in Transylvania).
NewBenCity : Transylvania was Hungarian soil for one thousand years. Vlad the Impaler was the prince of Wallchia(spelling?). Romania is basically a made up nationality, much like Iraqis. A bunch of different groups lumped into each other to form a much larger nation to keep its neighbors from getting too large. This is why France supported Romania.
@@Charles_Anthony you are wrong...
@@Dreamtime76 : All that I have said is fact and backed by history. Romania is a fake nation.
I see people who doesn't understand Black Metal commenting Atillas vocal. In Black Metal, the vocals must sound terrifying, not tecnnical or beatiful.
Atilla doesn't sound terrifying tho...he sounds goofy. Darkthrone Emperor and Burzum destroyed Mayhem despite the timeline. I understand Black metal and have been following it for almost 30 years and Atilla just isn't a talented vocalist...he isn't a vocalist, he just kind of mumbles into the mic. There is no actual art to what he does.
If you'd heard him with Sunn O))) I don't think you'd be saying that. He's become an incredibly technical vocalist.
bullshit .... he actually add's another perspective
i lost u when u mentioned cradle. for they are inherently awful.
Whorecules The old school cradle from the 90's was good tho
real metal heads, can't imagine nowadays half of band may not live on to its debut album release
Kpop is ruling the music industry sadly
"Dude that is the most metal thing i ever heard in my life, high five dude" - pickles (Metalocalypse)
