Dedicated to Euronymous, the man who made the record's production possible, Vikingligr Veldi is just the sound, feel and taste that Euronymous desired for his record label, Deathlike Silence Productions.With its raw and furious power, the album starts with a blizzard of high speed, relentless black metal, leaving listeners cold and disoriented, yet with a strange calmness. Frost is 108 times better
this is much better than frost, in terms of the musicianship itself.
The cold ambience of Frost is a little better though.

Ivar took inspirarion from ambient and electronic music that Euronymous would recommend to the kids within the scene. Enslaved and Ulver were influenced by this kind of music from Euronymous.
One of the first Black Metal records I ever listened to - it was so dark and hypnotic, it converted me. The best thing to drive to, alone at night, in the middle of winter, down a long icy road. . .

Who would've thought black metal could be so ambient. It has a wonderful hypnotic quality about it. This is essential in any collection.
that quality is typical for early 90s BM like Immortal's pure holocaust, Mayhem's Mysteriis Dom Sathanas and particularly early Ildjarn, Burzum and Dark Throne (91 to 94).

Went to their concert in Salt Lake City yesterday. This guys were awesome. I shook Grutle's hand told him it was a great show, then walked outside to go to friends's car, found out that he locked his keys inside. My friend and I walked back and saw Arve and Herbrand smoking outside of their tour bus, we asked them for a wire coat hanger so that we could break in my friend's car. Herbrand ran inside to find one, then we came out and told us he couldn't find any. So we ended up just breaking a back window to get in the car. Fun night.

The last song, Norvegr - holy shit! Haven´t heard such a lyrical and atmospheric BM song for a long time! Sheer masterfulness, complete unity with nature, I feel like dissolving into woods, mountains, lakes... This proves how sensitive and sophisticated black metal actually is! Exquisite!

15:22 maybe my favorite bit of this whole album. The guitar riff sound is just sooo fucking sweet, and when the blast beats come in. THAT SHIT IS ORGASMIC!

Norvegr is one of the most beautiful black metal songs I've ever heard
Their best record. This and "Frost". Another essential Black Metal masterpiece. Even though I appreciated most of their future stylistic developments too, especially the "ISA" album. But this first era is where it's at for me.

This album took 7 months for me to track down, hmv, kijiji, ebay all out or didnt ship to where i live. But today i got it from a friend who found it while she was vacation, fuck yeah!

After all these years this still blows me away.
Underrated, but not forgotten.
That keyboard intro to the first song is spooky as hell and the rest of the album is simply the work of great musical minds. I wished they carried on with this style of compostion in the following few albums, I wouldn't change anything on Frost though. Their recent outputs are good too but unlike the first couple of albums, they don't quite ignite the fire of excitement in me anymore.

Certainly one of the best debuts out there... but my personal favorite BM debut has to be Ulver's "Bergtatt."

Great driving CD. Wish I had seen them live. They never played Montreal in the early '90s.
They came to Quebec and Montreal a bunch of times in the mid to late 2000s, they played some older material too.

For me it sounds like a hybrid between De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas and Burzum's Aske EP.
+PedroSlv I was thinking along the lines of much the same thing. Especially how Lifandi Liv Undir Hamri is somewhat like a hyper-enhanced version of Stemmen Fra Tårnet in the phrasing and general atmosphere

I like new progressive Enslaved, and mid-era transitional Enslaved, but for me this album will always be their best. I love the almost pure black metal sound mixed in with a bit of more folky bits, but remaining highly classic.
Those who follow the path of Enslaved know that through their music these musicians express the violent rejection as a vomit of a world where nothing is worth living because there is no longer any spark of purity. A world of ashes where souls of ashes roam. Then, these sooty men go among these shadows, fist brandished, scream their warning and their unshakeable faith in a social and mythical universe elsewhere 🕊

I remember a Bathory fan at high school telling me that this was nothing special... That there was nothing viking about it, etc. etc. To this day I wonder how he could say that and if he still had the same opinion after hearing it again... Of course, everyone has the right to their opinion.
Not sure about the viking part as Im least interested in that but any Bathory fan including me would shake their head after reading comments like “Who knew Black metal could be THIS atmospheric?” 😒
Its not Bathory- Twilight of the Gods 100% viking metal. Seems like more traditional Norse black metal i.e. De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas style with some healthy dollops of Viking era bathory-isms.
No doubt Mayhem and Bathory influenced the creation of this album.

"Isa" and "Below the Lights" are among the best progressive metal albums of all time, on the other hand "Vikingligr Veldi" and "Frost" are among the best Black (black viking) metal albums of all time. How many bands evolve like Enslaved.....

I bought this album a while ago. When I first heard it, I thought to myself, " this is superb and super cool." This has to be one of my top ten favorites. Frost is a great album as well.
