Ausschnitt aus der Übertragung "Carols from King's" von BBC Two am 24.12.2016
A solo chorister sings Once In Royal David's City to begin the traditional celebration of Christmas from the Chapel of King's College, Cambridge.
The world-famous choir, directed by Stephen Cleobury, sings a glorious selection of carols, including Ding! Dong! Merrily on High (Wilberg), The Holly and the Ivy, The Three Kings (Cornelius) and O Come All Ye Faithful.
The Christmas story is told in the words of the King James Bible and in poems by Rowan Williams, Charles Causley and UA Fanthorpe.
LYRICS
O come, O come, Emmanuel!
Redeem thy captive Israel
That into exile drear is gone,
Far from the face of God's dear Son.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.
O come, thou Branch of Jesse! draw
The quarry from the lion's claw;
From the dread caverns of the grave,
From nether hell, thy people save.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.
O come, O come, thou Dayspring bright!
Pour on our souls thy healing light;
Dispel the long night's lingering gloom,
And pierce the shadows of the tomb.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.
O Come, thou Lord of David’s Key!
The royal door fling wide and free;
Safeguard for us the heavenward road,
And bar the way to death's abode.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.
O come, O come, Adonai,
Who in thy glorious majesty
From that high mountain clothed in awe,
Gavest thy folk the elder Law.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

Amen to that.

Amen. And the darkness never will overcome it.
You can keep your jingle bells, this is a proper Christmas tune. Sumptuous.
Not Christmas, it's Advent..
@@chris22capt This, this is the face of a man who knows all the ember days by heart :)
This song is meant to be sung from the perspective of the Israelites awaiting Jesus' first coming, but these days I sing it begging for His second.
Great songs last forever
I was driving yesterday and I move the radio dial to a sonfonic radio station then it was this song ... I forgot all about my long day and stuck in traffic .. I'm at home today and sharing it to my wife .. rejoice rejoice... What a wonderful song. Well done
This is one of the great hymns. Loved it as a child, love it today.
Emmanuel will come again, and his people will recognize him as the true Savior. I'm sure you weren't alone singing this hymn. The host of angels were singing with you. Thank you for your effort while praising to our God.
Jesus Christ said the stones would cry out. This the cry I hear

How I adore this beautiful Advent hymn! 🙏❤
The organ always soothes my soul. What a beautiful instrument.
I'm a devout atheist, but I can acknowledge that this is a terrific hymn. I love the way the organ becomes more prominent as the verses progress.
I pray for you my friend, come to Jesus
@@christianstravels I don't require your prayers, thank you. I live a perfectly fulfilling life without the need for imaginary beings.
@TheGodpharma, you might be living a good life , but life will end then the judgment for everyone . Those who are their names not written in the book of life shall be damned forever . Repent means turn away from sin , ask the Lord to forgive your sins , ask him to come to your heart and life accept him as the only Saviour. Then, by faith, you are born again and have an eternal life.
@@freemanmt The concept of sin is meaningless since there is no evidence of any gods. When my life and yours end, there is no evidence for anything other than eternal oblivion. Make the most of this life - there is nothing after it.
Ps no need for this.
No pause after "Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel". I like that. I think that's the authentic version.
Amen and Amen, thank you my Heavenly Father, for giving us your one and only Son, our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, whome you sent from heaven, in the fullness of time, born of the virgin Mary, to die for our sins. I thank you Lord Jesus. Amen.
This make me miss growing up in England
My father was a minor diplomat, and had NO confidence in the American Educational system. At age, 14, I was sent back to the Mother Country to be properly educated. When there, I was trained in organ, and played all four years I was there. Even now, nearly 50 years later, the memories are just as fresh as then. These memories have given me much solace over the past five decades.
We sing this during the German Mass at Christmas Eve in the US.
@@lavanw6373 there's a German mass?
@@alwellus They have organs in the US too, ya know…
@@longliveclassicmusic yes, I know - I was booted out of 3 Catholic parishes that perferred a GD guitar in spite of Catholic teaching that strictly forbade it!

The "Emmanuel" at 0:50 never fails to give me chills every time I come back to this video
Don't forget the one at 2:16
What a life it would have been, the choirmaster of such a wonderful choir. To have been immersed in the finest of liturgical music with only the best singers.
Watching this in 2023 christmas season..this hymn still lives and makes meaning till today...O' Israel... peace be unto you...
This is heavenly, sounds like Angels singing.
He will come again and will save us the 2nd time around.i will wait and I will witness His promise and His mighty power.
When I close my eyes and listen to this song I can vividly picture that dark night with that star shining so bright. I can see and hear the animals from the stables. It’s like I’m transported back in time.
My favourite hymn ever after hearing the choir sing it in Durham Cathedral ❤❤❤

My favorite Carol of all times
News has come through that Sir Stephen Cleobury - the conductor - has passed on. My very best to his friends and family. Thank you hugely Sir for providing us with the wonderful Music every Christmas Eve, and indeed throughout the year.
Absolutely beautiful, a hymn replete with meaning and significance.

OOOOOOH. ONE OF MY MOST FAVOURITE. DESCANT IS BEAUTIFUL. ORGAN AMAZING. CHRISTMAS MUSIC AT IT'S BEST.
I regret not taking up choir at a young age
This hymn is sung in four part harmony and in the key of E minor. I am a Christian of long-standing and have a musical background, blessed with perfect pitch. Like the descant.
Love it, love it , love it.

Hear O Israel....
Your saviour, the one who came from heaven as the Word 2000 years ago, received body, blood and flesh from holy mother, who preached the Kingdom of God, who died on the cross, resurrected from the dead, who ascended into heaven and was seated at the right hand of the Father, has come again acquiring human flesh. His one and only name is Emmanuel.
"And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS." Revelations 19:16
He is ❤️EMPEROR EMMANUEL❤️
Yes.not second person of a man made trinity.
Enya
O come, o come Emmanuel
To free your captive Israel
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear
Rejoice, rejoice o Israel
To you shall come Emmanuel
Veni, veni, Emmanuel
Captivum solve Israel
Qui gemit in exilio
Privatus Dei Filio
Gaude, gaude, Emmanuel
Nascetur pro te, Israel
Gaude, gaude, Emmanuel
Nascetur pro te, Israel
Gaude, gaude, Emmanuel
Nascetur pro te, Israel
Enya can't do this - what this choir does.
May Almighty God bless me with a human female wife who is kind and caring Amen

Same to you
I'm a staunch pagan, though eclectic, only in terms of pagan traditions. Nevertheless, I'm also a proud of the Israelite lineages in my genealogic tree and their ancient history. Although I understandably prefer their pagan side - something which was obviously denied by many for a long time but fortunately confirmed by recent archaeologists and serious historians in recent decades - it's beautiful to see the northern European tribes adorning the Israelite legends with their majestic singing and melodies.
Merry Christmas/Blessed Yule to all of you in the northern hemisphere. Much obliged for this sublime performance!
Mr etheridge is assistant principal at my school.
OMG 1:50 my RS teacher is far left!
This is the same group that sings the anthem at important events especially at Wesminster Abbey.
What? King's College has its own choir, as does Westminster Abbey.
Lovely stained glass window
Well Annette, good morning and hello there from Pennsylvania. I want to tell you I gave both of your comments a like. I agree with you so much. I love this hymn. Without a doubt, this is my favorite Christmas hymn. Annette, I thank you for mentioning the stained glass window. You see, I've been blind since birth and I live alone. My wonderful wife died on December 3, 2016. Annette, we were married 28 years. I admit I often forget how visual the internet really can be. To be sure, I don't feel bad about not seeing the visuals. But, it is interesting to me when someone like you mentions something visual. I want to make it abundantly clear I thank God for blessings such as a Braille Bible and internet Bibles. Annette, you are more than welcome to send me a reply if you want to communicate with me. I think we could share a fascinating world of music together.
The lyrics are very different than what I’ve sung all my life.
Here are the lyrics:

O come, O come, thou Dayspring bright!
Pour on our souls thy healing light;

Why have they removed a bar of music between Emmanuel and Shall? It ruins it.
This song says my name in it
Isn't that cool 😎 🤔

Who 12 dislikes
Ok, idk bout y'all, but I dislike how some parts are sped up and off beat. Could be the style, but compared to others I've heard, this stixks out
Sublime hymn. I'm missing the great Christmas music of old. I can't stand Jing Bells or many contemporary Christmas music. The crap nw is seasonal, not Christmas music.
🙏🏼🙏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
@@monicanath4859 Saturday, I have the joy of going to see Handel's Messiah.
It is always a great pity when congregations cannot pick up the tempo of the choir and organ, perhaps even watch the director of music, and go at their own pace. I know, I am being picky. Just speaking as an ex head chorister - used to annoy me beyond the limit.
I get it, but that is not what this hymn is about. We humans are full of imperfections - that's why we need Jesus - God is with us.
This is a anglican church???
It is from the chapel of King's College, Cambridge not a church.
@TheRenaissanceman65 - churches and cathedrals are public places of worship. Private chapels are not. They are usually within the grounds of a large house or in this case college.
For those of us who prefer to hear this amazing choir sing alone, the congregations' singing is a *major* interference. The Chapel Congregation is not world renound, the College Choir is.
facite non victimarum this is not a performance, it is a Church Service.
Thus is a vigil mass not a concert
