  • #ninefortyfour #panerai #divewatch - Ok, Icons of watch design! I’m talking the Rolex submariner, the Omega Speedster the Casio G-Shock! They’re all iconic in their own right, and instantly recognisable!
    But there’s one model line, that by simply seeing the crown, and nothing more, you instantly know what you’re looking at!
    This! Is the Panerai Luminor! Specifically, the 40mm PAM1371, also known as the Luminor quaranta. A dive watch from Panerai that features all the best design elements of the iconic Luminor range, in a compact, wearable, and still very capable package!
    In this video, we’ll talk through it’s spec’s, it’s design, and take a look at just how wearable this is for a Panerai, all to see if it’s a worthy addition to your watch collection! This is probably the best Panerai for most people! A watch the Panerai Due should have been!

    ///WRITTEN REVIEW///
    - Size -
    So the Quaranta is a modestly sized Luminor that offers an excellent blend of design, performance and specs. With my callipers, we have a diameter of 39.7mm across the case, and 46mm in total width, including the crown guard. We have a lug to lug dimension of 48.6mm, a lug width of 22mm and a thickness of 12.4mm.
    The diagonal dimension corner to corner, measures 45mm. This dimension set makes the watch incredibly wearable on a smaller wrist. I genuinely love the way this wears! By my estimates anyone with a wrist size of five and a half inches and up can apply!
    - Design -
    When it comes to overall case design, this is every bit a Panerai Luminor! The case is made from 316L stainless steel, and features all of the aesthetic design queues you would expect on a Panerai!
    We have prominent fixed lugs, featuring screw in spring bars, making for a secure strap attachment and easy swap out. The Luminor case design, despite appearing blocky form a far, is actually quite nuanced up close, featuring curvaceous, sweeping lines when viewed in profile!
    The case is entirely satin brushed, adding to the overall tool watch aesthetic! The fit and finish are exceptional, with no creaking or excess play in any of the components!
    - Movement -
    The Quaranta features the Panerai P900 automatic movement, made by in-group partner Val flueir. So not strictly in-house! The movement is 4.2mm thick, pivots on 23 jewels, beats at 28,800VPH and has a power reserve of 70 hours! Its also shock resistant thanks to panerais, Incabloc anti shock device.
    Finally we have a quick set date, single main spring barrel, and a movement that consists of 171 individual components! One thing to note, is that the movement, does not feature hacking seconds! A feature that allows you to precisely set the time agains an accurate reference!
    This isnt great on a watch that costs upwards of £6K! Cost cutting jumps to mind! The movement is also not COSC certified, and Panerai don’t make any claims on the accuracy!
    In my experience wearing the watch for a week, id say its between -4 and +7 seconds for 24hrs! Again, not amazing for its price! That said, its hard to actually notice with the small seconds display and no continuous minute track on the dial!
    - Wearability -
    I’d still say it was on the larger side of perfect, but totally feel like I’m wearing a full blooded Panerai, yet in a super wearable package! Further more, and especially with the white dial, the watch is a bit of a strap monster, suiting a variety of styles!
    The leather looks great, and adds a formal demeanour, while a green rubber strap provides a very sporty and casual feel! Plus it allows you to take full advantage of the 100m water resistance! And again, a nato also looks great in my opinion!
    - Verdict -
    So what’s the verdict? Should you add a Panerai Quaranta to your collection? In short, if you love the Panerai design language but have been put off in the past by their massive size! Then yes, this is the Panerai for you!
    There is absolutely nothing as instantly recognisable as a Laminar case, and now its available in 40mm, combined with a more than adequate depth rating, this really is the Panerai for the masses!
    It’s not perfect, and some die hard followers of the brand will still disagree, there’s no question though that this is the most wearable Panerai Luminor ever! It’s a complete joy on the wrist!

    So Panerai made it smaller. And gave us 100m WR. And a non cosc movement, that doesn’t hack. For over $6000. What a bargain! NOT.

      Do you go diving? Have you been beyond 30m? Let alone 100m in the water?

      I own this watch and it runs within 2 seconds per day generally. While i do wish it was 200 or 300M, it literally has no impact on my life.

    Thanks for the video. Best review of this watch on UA-cam. Do more Panerai Videos! You've got this down. I'm really interested in this one - I wear my 44mm Luminor a lot and love the watch, but there are times when I'd love to have the edginess of the panerai design on my wrist, but a huge luminor would be out of synch with what I'm wearing or appear to be a "flex" in context. Plus, I think any 40mm bezel-less white dialed watch presents as a large watch in anyone's book. Thanks again!

    In reality why not make a couple of smaller versions for smaller wristed gentlefolk. It’s not like they eliminated their iconic sized versions, just added. Smart move to get a broader audience in becoming paneristi. IMHO of course.

    Come on, it’s a Panerai. You have to go at least 44mm. I always thought a 39 or 40mm was my sweet spot, but I bought a 45mm Radiomir. I love it. All other watches on my wrist look little.

    • @ninefortyfour
      @ninefortyfour  5 місяців тому +1

      Yeah, they should really be 44mm or larger, but the 40mm is a great way into Panerai for the small wristed! (me, lol) that said i have tried a 44mm titanium model and liked it rather a lot!... Thanks for commenting!

    Charming looks yet.. for that money I'd rather get a Longines Big eye AND a Tudor BB54, each of which representing more value.

      Great thoughts... i'd tend to agree with you... The £6700 entry point is steep for what you get, even if the looks and fit are excellent (for a Panerai) The longines and 54 are a great combined alternative! Thanks for the comment!

    Note that it does indeed hack. You pull out the crown and move it counter-clockwise and the second hand stops. Then you set the time.

    My useless opinion is this is a bad move by panerai. The whole appeal of Panerai was the go big or go home approach vs other brands. And people love this...panerai didnt follow any trends ..they made trends. Now they are trying to please and go with what other brands are doing by shrinking the case size and in return, the WR also takes a massive downgrade. Gone are those days of 300m wr panerai in 44mm case sizes. If ya want a panerai, look up the older models and get one in the used market. The new gen are horrible.

      When I bought my PAM 111 over 18 years ago Panerai had 40mm Luminar options for women or men that didn't want a 44mm case on their wrist. So this isn't something they weren't doing nearly 20 years ago.
