    "Who Wants To Live Forever"
    Written by Brian May
    Originally recorded by Queen on the album A Kind Of Magic
    Like many of you, I discovered “Who Wants To Live Forever” in the movie Highlander, long before I ever knew of the band Queen. It was likely even before “Bohemian Rhapsody” hit my radar in Wayne’s World. (I can’t be sure, though, as I don't recall how old I was when I saw Highlander.) Safe to say this is one of the first Queen songs I ever heard. It is also one of my favorites... and it is an absolute beast to sing! I’ve had the great pleasure of performing it with various symphonies, including The Boston Pops, and I get chills every time. Freddie was at his best here, and Brian’s songwriting, every bit as spectacular; magical, even. Hope you enjoy this, as I did my best here to do justice not only to the song itself, but also to the incredible arrangement by Michael Kamen.

      @@davidmacfarlane1763 When Marc is on stage he tries to do the songs justice. He has said he tries to the draw the line of being Freddie and himself. He does it to make diehards happy and reminisce about the originals. Marc himself has said he would never wear a yellow jacket, mustache, or mic stand that Freddie had with his performances. As a huge Marc fan, I enjoyed your reaction immensely!! Ditto x a gazillion at your comments towards the end about wearing his heart on his sleeve! You looked up his channel, and saw his 90s cover series. If you tap on the little down arrow below that, you'll find his original album called Impersonator. Paradise is his most popular one, but they're all extremely underated!

    He didn't hear Freddie and Queen until later in life (Wayne's World). His parents were pastor and music leader of a church and exposed him to mostly classical works. His first teenage influences were George Michael, Jordan Knight (nkotb), Eddie Vedder and Jeff Buckley. That combo somehow equals Freddie Mercury.

    Marc also didn’t know he sounded like Freddie when he first started doing music with his band Downhere. Lol people kept saying he sounded like Freddie not knowing he has the ability naturally. As the years went on Marc sounded more like Freddie as he got older, he didn’t even listen to Queen until the early 2000’s cause of the comparisons so it was a happy accident lol.
    Brian May and Roger Taylor handpicked him for their official tribute band. Nowadays Marc has his own Queen tribute band the Ultimate Queen Celebration. They tour around the world honoring Queen’s legacy.

    He was in a Christian Band called “Downhere” ….listen to the song “My Last Amen” and “Cathedral made of People”! Spectacular songs. The song Paradise off of Impersonator is really good…all original. Also recommend the cover of Dolly Pardons “I will always love you” ….this dude kills it. Met him last year and he is super nice and down to earth humble. Probably the best male vocalist I have ever seen and heard.👍

      Roger Taylor Quotes from various interviews:
      1) “It was as if Freddie was in the room. It was uncanny.” 2) "I wanted to avoid some guy impersonating Freddie. The fact that Marc Martel's voice sounds spine-chillingly identical is just a fact of nature. That's his voice. When he sings our songs, it's pretty uncanny. You close your eyes and it's like Freddie is in the room. It's scary." 3) "And, of course, we have the fabulous Marc Martel, who has the UNCANNY ability to sound EXACTLY like Freddie, and it really is spooky." 4) "That voice. You listen, close your eyes and you think it's Freddie. It's really uncanny." 5) "Quite scary... You close your eyes and you think it's Freddie onstage, and he actually even looks a little bit like him. And, it's not just the one song. It's every song he sings. When we were rehearsing, in Toronto, they were playing Bohemian Rhapsody and I was sitting down writing, trying to work out the set. And I closed my eyes and suddenly got completely spooked out, 'cause I could've sworn it was Freddie. And you know, you have a very fine ear when you do it all your life and it just is absolutely staggering at times. ... He even does the megaphone effect on 'Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon.' It's great. It's quite a joyous thing to see." 6) "Well, it's uncanny...the resemblance. We're not looking for impersonators. We're looking for great musicians who can represent our music in a good way. But Marc's tonality of his voice and even something in the face there; it's just an uncanny resemblance to Freddie, so he was a great find."

      @@marcfan1822 I think Roger was being kind. He and Brian say that about Adam too. I’m certainly not saying Marc’s voice isn’t amazing I’m saying it didn’t sound spot on Freddie to me. Was a bit softer singing Forever here and not as much power & growl as Freddie’s voice had on this track and had some falsetto moments here as well. Maybe it was just this particular track. I’ll give some other Queen covers he did a listen to be fair. Regardless it was a great performance in regards to key, pitch, vibrato etc. I guess I just always felt and still feel that Freddie is just irreplaceable.

      @marcfan1822 2 роки тому +5

      @@joebabe302 Roger has never ever said that Adam sounds like Freddie and I don't think Brian has eithr Their whole rationale for employing Adam is that he *doesn't* sound anything like Freddie. Those quotes are from multiple interviews and Roger Taylor is very down to earth and a no nonsense kind of guy, given he out and out called dress up impersonators "pantomime" in interviews, which is fairly illustrative of a no bul * t, frank person, not a fallacious flatterer. Legends are always irreplaceable, I agree. But Marc doesn't want to replace anyone . The whole point here is that how people hear Marc is subjective. Commenters even recently have said his voice is too light, too high , too low , an avalanche including reactors and vocal coaches have said he's amazing on piano and then someone pops up and says he needs to sing without it because they don't think he's co ordinated enough lol. People hear what they want to hear. I want Marc to do more original work , and I don't want him to be Freddie either but it burns me when people make statements like "he doesn't sound anything like Freddie"which is out and out wrong . You need only search for the numerous comparison and duet fan videos people have done with him and Freddie t o realise that Marc is ridiculously close to Freddie's pristine studio vocals as Roger said, before the heavy smoking and vocal nodules forced Freddie to play with arrangements and sing lower and more macho in later stage performances .

      @@marcfan1822 sorry. when I said Roger and Brian said that about Adam too I meant in regards to complimenting Adam in a general way. I’ve seen them with Adam live twice and he sounds nothing like Freddie either but he like Marc can obviously handle the role of being Queen’s frontman. Again maybe it was just this selection and I’m definitely going to check out his other Queen covers. I had heard of Marc in years past and how amazing he is but i never had the chance to dive in but now I will check it out. Listen saying I’m a HUGE Freddie/Queen fan is a massive understatement! Even when they got Paul Rodgers I was upset and not impressed but years later I came to appreciate Paul’s talents as well. I was just simply crushed when Freddie died at 45 freaking years old. Can you imagine if he just lived another 10 years how much more incredible music Queen would’ve created??? Ughhh the thoughts of what could’ve been. 😔

      Well, it’s questionable what Adam can handle, since there is so much assistance comes at him from every band member and the sound team. Maylor need to praise Adam simply bc they need to sell tickets and justify their multi-million quid expenditure: lasers, pyro and hydraulics ain’t cheep, you know?
      Martel is his own man, a fully-fledged musician, multi-instrumentalist, composer, etc etc AND a bloody brilliant frontman to literally every band, every ensemble, and every symphonic orchestra he is asked to front BECAUSE he is simply PHENOMENAL in every way as far as frontmen go, and especially Queen affiliated frontmen went.
      Marc’s versions of Queen’s catalogue are the most in demand. Is it because Marc sounds like Freddie? YES! AND because he can handle the material Lambert or Rodgers can’t touch. Or everyone would be asking Lambert or Rodgers, and nit Marc, to sing Queen at various festivals in various countries.
      New bands and large world tours are built around Marc’s talent. He IS THE ULTIMATE Queen heir, Freddie’s heir. He does Freddie justice and preserves the quality of his music in a live setting. Of course, he is not Freddie. Nor does he want to sound like Freddie, but he does, he did before he knew who Freddie was and he will after your disapproval of him sounding like Freddie. Are they identical? Absolutely not! Thank god for that! But does Marc pay one helluva tribute to Freddie’s genius? 100%. And it takes a genius to pay proper tribute to another genius!
