You have a great channel because you are doing it all yourself. You have not sold out to high priced sponsors, with their trade mark garments, flashy deck gear or state of the art engine or boat. Sorry, I'm just a small sailboat person and appreciate those who make it on their own. Tom
Sam solo's to Hawaii, provisions a bottle of whiskey and some spagettio"s . After another few thousand nautical miles finds out about minute rice. This guy is a hero to people who live simple lives and don't care what others think. Cheers Sam
Sammo, I am soooo excited for you! You are amazing! FYI, I raised your momma on Minute Rice. All I ever used... until I met Pop Pop...boy, did our rice selections ever changed! But, for your swinging cook stove, Minute Rice is the way to go! Love you.....Grams
Now Dad is preemptively warning him about the evils of Miracle Whip just in case Sam hears about that too.... And then there was a discussion about whether or not velveeta is really cheese
I hadn't heard of Delos until you mentioned it. I checked out a few videos, and that whole operation is totally insufferable. True for most sailing videos/people it seems. But, I can't stop watching your adventures, Sam! There is something special about your approach and your outlook and the purity of it all. Don't stray from that, no matter how sweet the swag may be. All the best, Kelsey.
Delos is so big and popular based on their long road to get there. How about doing a little research and learning about their 10+ year journey and have remained humble and gracious. And for people who are talking about babies...Bryan and Karen had their baby after 10 years, yeah shame on them for starting a family. Delos and Sam together for a couple videos would be awesome.
Used to live in Camden, Maine. Sailed my Pearson 26 along the Mid-Coast. The views in your vid brings back the memories. For me, the most beautiful sailing waters on the East Coast. Thanks
There's an easier way to make rice. Buy an insulated thermos, one of those double walled stainless steel types. Put water and rice in a pot and bring to a boil, once it starts boiling put it in the thermos. It will cook itself from there, takes about twice as long as normal but you don't have to watch it, it won't spill and you aren't burning gas. That's what I do when hiking and bicycle touring. Works for pasta and all sorts of other things too. Don't add hot water to cold things in it, won't work that way, have to bring it all to a boil first then put in the thermos.
Hi Sam, I just want to say thank you for the videos which seem to have given me some encouragement in my own sailing. I will say you make it look easier than it really is which lead me to some precarious adventures. I just sailed to Hawaii helping a friend get his boat (38ft) to Oahu...Oct. 23 - Nov. .14th. My advice to anyone thinking of crossing in fall is DON'T!!! Four of the days were terribly high winds. A mast shroud snapped during one of the bad days...our third jury rig held but we were forced to sail under jib only and had to favor our port tack to avoid stress on the mast. One day was like being in a washing machine all night. But Henrietta sends her regards...my videos on the way to youtube to share.
My dad's family built ships in Maine. Even though I'm in SoCal, I have a strong feeling for the beautiful state. Your video does it justice. Thanks! Enjoying your videos...
Nice Maine videos. The quick brown rice is really good too if you like it and can eat it. I keep it on my boat and mix pickled cabbage in. Makes a nice wrap with, fish, canned chicken, beans, chili, or whatever you like. You had some awesome weather. Sometimes that fog hangs around for days!
Consider a fender board. They are heavy enough not to “squeeze “ out and will fall back into position. Use a hard wood for the board and 2 of the largest fender board ends. Great protection from piles and rough (commercial) docks.
Amusing that you say "we" when talking to the camera while sailing solo. You're referring to yourself and the vessel, of course. I do the same thing when flying solo, when talking to air traffic control in the radio I catch myself saying "we" as well, lol. Great videos!
So sad I missed you here in Maine, the little island you swam next to Vinalhaven is right across from my in-laws place! If you ever come back look me up or stop at North Haven Oyster Co. Good luck with your operation and excited to see what you’ll be up to in the coming months! Cheers!
Great coastline to explore. Glad to see your engine is working, would be good if you could get a good dingy motor---use it to scout around some of those islands. Yeah, minute rice is great and fast; you could complement it with some gravy too.
Great adventure Sam. Your channel may not have all the sexy bling of the big power house sailing channels but I like you style and content. Keep it up mate. Thanks for sharing! And congratz on nearly 60K subscribers!!!!!
I always cook my rice like pasta. Put in more than enough water and boil the rice until it is almost ready and just a little firm to the taste. Then poor it though a strainer which fits over your cook pot saving about an inch of water to return to the cook pot and then steam the rice dry in the strainer until it is done for the last 5 minutes or so. Works like a charm and you don't have to worry about boiling the rice dry or burning it like you do using the absorption method. And this has the added bonus of not needing to rinse your rice to remove excess starch since it gets removed with the cook water.
Take a look at Zarcor for locks. I ordered some companionway doors from them with the combination lock option and after a year in Mexico it still looks good.
Sam comes across as a genuinely happy guy, grateful to be able to share his sailing experiences with 34k+ people (including some of the hassles that come with this... outboard problems). Inspires me to get a similar boat again. I live on one of these islands year-round.

NICE ASSEMBLY OF VIEWS , ENJOYED THANK YOU loved the smell of that spruce forest. northern Maine good smelly. ok just my memory..................but i still smelled it.
Saw you in Oriental a couple weeks ago while I was rushing to get something before the store closed. Wanted to drop by and say hello but you were gone when I got back. Another time… Keep up the great sailing and vids.
Hey Sam new to the Chanel but loving the videos so far. So cool to see you were up in Maine. I sail out of Rockland which is the closest mainland harbor to Vinalhaven. Glad you enjoyed your time. If your ever up here again and want a couple of locals to show you around I would be more then happy to!
These videos are absolutely wholesome to watch. You look so figured out, and from mine and many of your subscribers', you seem to have everything figured out. Also love the shades!!! #sunprotection
I spent a few days last year camping on Mt. Desert Island.. It was really beautiful and was still kinda crowded with the last of the cruise ships arriving.. My hats off to you if you hiked to the top of the mountain.. Some of the most stunning scenery I have ever seen...
Awesome vids. Took the family to Maine in July. It’s just an amazing place. Acadia Bar Harbor we were about 15 mls west of Quoddyhead lighthouse. AmaZing Places great Lobster. Cheaper than a value meal. Capt Matt in Machiasport

1:08 ...LOL... You didn't know "Minute Rice" existed???? I been eating that since I was 10 ~ about 50 years ago!!! You Know - They got a "new" thing called Microwave Rice now (Uncle Bens flavored Rices and Organic Grains too - Near East?) that are delicious! Pop them in the microwave - in their own bag - for 90 seconds - and eat!!! Great to mix with fish, chix, beef, etc...
theres a brand of rice called uncle's Ben rice. The packet can go into a pot of water seald and will take around ten minites and then tear it openin to a bowl and mix with what you have and eat. Quite nice. Gerard.
My friend. Another fine video. I am esp fond of the way you found a nice spot and stayed an extra day. Tho from experience I caution you... one of those nice spots may wind up holding you for many more than 2 days, esp along the granite shores of coastal Maine It's the lore and the beauty of coastal cruising But seriously dude at your age you never prepared Minute Rice? Greetings from New Brunswick Canada , not far from where this video was shot, along the Bay of Fundy we have some crazy 15M (50') tides , anyway great work I really enjoy your video's keep them coming..

Agree. I too prefer solo sailing or couples only. No kids or dogs. No babies especially.
I agree. I can't watch the big, popular sailing channels. I watch a handful of solo sailers as that's what I'll be doing and can relate more.
Can’t disagree more. Delos is great.
@@earthangel8730 As soon as I see kids/babies on a sailing channel I switch off. Can't stand them. I don't mind dogs though.

Nice! Sorry we failed to tell you about Minute Rice. Dad was morally opposed. But at least we clued you in to cheap Raman and Kraft Mac
I share dad's moral position. It's worth a better stove to have real rice.

I absolutely love how smart and resourceful this guy is but yet just now discovered Minute rice 🤣😍 Adorbs!
Excellent video Sam. Maine is a beautiful State.
1:00 tip on cooking rice: wash and rinse it a few times, soak it on tap water for an hour+, throw water away, cook on low heat for... 15 minutes?

Minute rice and instant mashed potatoes are the staples of life. 😄

The Lobster Fishery in Maine is incredibly frustrating as they are highly regulated, Do as Sam does and give them a wide berth!

nice shot from the forward room. your messy interior kicked my ocd hardcore lol
Sam, I just made some doors for my Catalina and ordered a Combi Cam lock to use, I wanted a combination lock so I didn't have to keep up with a key.

@@samholmessailing Could not find any stainless models unfortunately, I purchased the black powdercoated version.
DAN fenders from Denmark. You can find them on eBay for fraction of the price.
