Sam, I love the brutal honesty... left the toilet seacock open... left the fill cap off the diesel tank... dead flies everywhere. You are one in a million, I really enjoy your channel.
The Atlantic ocean's pouring in through the head, there's diesel seeping up through the cabin sole, he's slip-sliding around in a putrid soup of squashed sea fly guts & what does Sam have to say for himself? "On the plus side, we should be making good time to Boston." 😂 That's our boy! 👍
Hey Sam - I live about a block from the Tea Party museum on Congress Street in Boston. Fun to see that you were here. I’m embarrassed about and apologize for the attitude of some of those sailors in your anchorage. I think those were Solings they were on, so know the club they are part of. I’ve been sailing out of Boston for many years, so have had my own dealings with them. They are not boat owners and are largely weekend, inner-harbor sailors, so wouldn’t even be bothered to read a chart to know you were in a legit anchorage. Very few people anchor there, so I’m sure they’ve come to just expect it’s “their” course without obstruction. The course should not have been set up around you, though. It’s on them. Hope it didn’t tarnish your visit. Take care and all the best in 2021.
Bostonians are just a culture of abrasiveness. It took me years to get to tolerate it but it still lands as rude a lot for people not from Boston. It may not be meant that way tho. They just grew up everyone being harsh abrasive and ugly to eachother so they don't even blink.
@@time4transformation806 And yet Massachusetts sends their best(D) to United States Congress and so call friendly touchy people states send their worst(R) to the Congress.
It's a pity you were so far from Boston when the flies appeared. Boston Police Department could have mobilised their swat team. Have a good New Year Sam.
Again, I'm loving the no bullshit no clickbait approach Sam, I should imagine most UA-camrs would have made that mooring attempt look like the first go.
Great video. We raced sometimes as well as cruise..amd we find some beer can racers really get overboard haha with the racing..they think they are in an America's cup race.. should have saluted them with a glass of fine scotch as they passed to ease their sour faces. For flies I hang these plastic hangers with a yellow saturated pad for insects. It's called d-fens. You can get them at home depot. Another benefit is that it keeps spiders away since it repels all the small insects and takes away their food source. We put one in the cabin, and one under the bimini
The USS Constitution is still a commissioned US Navy ship, crewed by active duty sailors. At least once a year it goes on a "turnaround cruise:" It is towed into the harbor, performs demonstrations, including at lease one gun salute, and then docks again facing in the opposite direction to ensure it weathers evenly.
I trust you have an alarm system in your home/workshop then you are away.. Or maybe a rattlesnake or two inside lol. loving all your sailing adventures, thank you for sharing ! LG Canada.
Born and raised in Boston so please let me apologize for those stink eyed sailors. The hell with them! Your channel inspired me and my husband to take the ASA 101 and 103 and we sailed out of Charlestown which is where that white boat with the yellow masts is anchored. Boston harbor is crazy busy all the time. Looks like you had an easier anchorage at the Statue of Liberty! Anyway, love your channel. Take care and happy new year!
Great video Sam. Can't believe those dinghy sailors were so sour-pussed about you anchoring in their course... Some folk just need to lighten up a bit. I'd love to sail in Boston some day, but I'm the other side of the pond.
That cute little boat is the smallest boat in the US Naval fleet measuring just 19' long with a 5' draft. It's a tug used for security patrols. You should see if they'll trade it for your dingy haha
Sam, you rock. Never sailed but have loved watching ever since your pacific crossing. Can't wait till you cross the atlantic as well. Keep on truckin(well, sailing).
Watching old episodes-. Okay the only more fun you coulda had in that “ sailing race anchorage “ would have been to take a cockpit shower in the BUFF or at least in a ‘ banana hammock ‘ as those grumpy people sailed by !! Now THAT woulda been hilarious .... lmao
Some years back the city of Jacksonville Florida donated some Live Oaks timbers to the refurbished USS Constitution. They came from 150 years old tree that were removed due to addition to the port there .
We bought a 1924 house that had a fuel oil (diesel) “incident” in the basement sometime during the ‘60’s. You can still smell it. I’m hoping we qualify for superfund cleanup at some point.
Gave me a flashback to a house in my hometown. Someone on Pear Street ordered 200 gallons of furnace oil. The driver went to the same number address on Peare Street and made the delivery. This house had been converted to gas and the oil tank in the basement removed. The filler pipe was still outside the house and the inside portion of it in the basement was never capped. Basement was soaked with fuel and even after it had been removed and cleaned up the fumes made the whole house uninhabitable. The court made the oil company buy the house.
This is a good suggestion. Place a fender several feet away on each side, cleat to dock as short as possible, then you have time to tie fore and aft. Got swarmed by wasps off Mexico, lucky they didn't sting Keep your cool!!
Happy New Year Sam, thanks for the insight into your enviable sailing life, every episode is gratefully received and looked forward to especially during periods of lockdown. All the best for 2021.
you got a Boat Yard?......that SV looks a lot smaller out of the water though but good luck prepping and fitting it out for next spring/summers Atlantic Crossing my friend, In the meantime Be Healthy, Be Safe and e Happy
Sam, thanks for another great enjoyable episode. I have been attacked by flies at sea on several occasions. The biting flies were awful. Another time greenhead flies or biting horseflies. A good flyswatter is a necessary item. I like your temporary quarters workshop. I have anchored in Gloucester Harbor but never sailed to Boston.
@@samholmessailing I know this is old, but I'm wondering how long it took you to row to the dinghy dock from that anchorage? I have dreams of sailing to Boston myself one day; I went to college there decades ago.
Sausage and onions with fly spice? Sam's plumbing fixed. Now its the boat plumbing that needs servicing. Flies have been a problem since the vikings. But hey, you made good time. 😆🍻 😁👍
Wish I had found your channel before you anchored in Portland. I could have bought you a beer or two. One of my students is the dock boy where you had trouble tying up on the way out. We just secured a mooring there in that field off the east end for our new to us Tartan 34C. Cheers and fair winds, mate.
The Thermacell works great on mosquitos but not really much help with anything but mosquitos. I live in Louisiana and the Thermacell is a life saver. I have several of them.
Great to watch your honest, real videos. Everyone forgets stuff when they leave somewhere. You may want to consider getting a microphone muffler off ebay to cut down the wind noise when filming on deck. I'd love to cruise that same area one day soon so it's cool to watch your vids.
From my experience, the fly problem can arise when there has been strong winds away from land, blowing all flies and bugs out to sea. All flies are then over joyed finding a small boat to sit and rest on
Welll, that's one good way to meet the local sailing folks, anchoring on their race course. You might have been close to one of the marks which is why they all seemed to be coming so close to you. Some of those class racers are uptight to begin with and even worse when they're out racing. Don't ask me how I know...
Was really fun to see someone else sail into Boston, a different perspective. Also, I didn’t know there were locks in the city! Going to have to hunt those down...
Buy a Dustbuster or other handheld vacuum, no leftover fly guts, also you will be surprised how fast it works...plus handy to have for intended uses... I use a vacuum in my garden to catch Lantern Flies, too fast otherwise. (invasive species)
PS, I've been watching you since you past through the C&D canal, you stayed next to the Bayard House...I practice my kayak rolls in that marina using the current going under a small bridge leading into the backwaters.

2020 could not stop Sam.
The geezer does not mess around.
The admirable admiral!
Don't feel bad, Sam! Being angry and yelling at people for no reason is practically an honored pastime in Boston.

The bad parts of the trip are where I learn the most. Anybody can handle the smooth sailing.
So true!
That can be made into a genuine quote
The diesel spill was a good idea, everyone knows that flies don’t like the smell of diesel ! 😂
Man I love watching your adventures! Keep up the awesome work Sam!
Glad to see your doing well after surgery.
The video is from SEPTEMBER before his surgery.

Time flies when you're watching Sam's videos.
Sam, the good thing about Boston is that once your curiosity is satisfied, you never have to go there again...signed, a fan of your excellent videos
Nice videos, and interesting. You show the real deal, not just the sunny day-everything perfect days.
Your the real deal

Great stuff. Appreciate seeing the reality of life aboard. It ain't all plain sailing, and that's just how life is. Keep keeping it real. Cheers!

Good to seeing you obviously feeling better. The world needs more Sam Holmes!
Enjoyed the cruise. I need to get control of my anchor anxiety and start being a little more adventurous, thanks for the example.
you sure do need it! Good luck with that
Some major tumblehome on Old Ironsides there. Thanks for the nice interlude to break up the Winter monotony, Sam.
Great video. You have so much honesty about you as you take us through your sailing adventures. Thank you. 👍🏼
Flies - "Don't mind us, we are just hitching a ride to Boston! At least those of us that survive!" LOL
dude i was laughin so hard when you were kicking yourself for not closing the diesel fuel cap. Great stuff sam
Toilet water and diesel adds a lovely scent to the boat.
