Way cool man. I still regret picking up a couple free Apple IIs. But when it comes to collection old computers it's all about space. Awesome video. For sure brings back memories.
Great review man, love all your reviews. When I was growing up we had a commodore amiga 2000. I dont know too many details about that computer, but that thing lasted and was very reliable. My dad bought it in 1987 and we didnt get ride of it untill 1999. I played Zany golf and f14 strike eagle and some sort of astoriod game alot. I was a really neat computer, wish I could have kept it. Keep up the good work man!
I had one of these growing up too. Mine had the "correct" green screen monitor with the stand that wrapped around the CPU. I learned my first bit of programming on this.
I own a vintage Mac SE which I've done a review on a little while back. Yeah I own a handful of games for this computer, it's just Oregon Trail is one of my favs.
The 40/80 toggle video minitors and TVs can only display text up to 40 characters wide. If you had a monitor capable of it you could switch it to 80 column text mode, which is the same text mode PCs boot up to before starting windows. This is the preferred mode you want for writing or calling a BBS or other computer. Both the port with the printer and telephone are standard serial ports. Usually a modem would be connected the one with the phone and printer to the other. This is not required.
@richardmaudsley77 The joysticks for the original ][ and ][ Plus did require you to pop the lid to plug it in, even on the later machines (even the IIGS) that provided an external port. (But, they didn't work on the //c, because they didn't have the same port, without making an adapter.)
Ah the Apple II C I remember this computer , it was my first one EVER . I had loads of fun on it , now a days we have computers that far more advanced than what was produced back in 1984 before the NES was introduced
if your wondering what the aptiva is its a computer made by IBM in 1994 but was released in 1995 the same year when the windows 95 OS came out that became the standard for this computer the unique thing about it is that it uses a 3D accelerator software made by ATI and the game that came with it utilize such software it was Mechwarrior 2 which I have also and like the computer my Mechwarrior 2 version is also rare.
The first computer game i remember playing was Moon Patrol on a green and black screened Apple II. One of my friends at the time was boasting how his older brother was making his own game where a helicopter goes into a volcano or something, that was probably a lie but i was so impressed that it got me wanting to create games too. and here i am, 20 years later and I have made, precisely zero games, wah wah!
from what I can remember on my old macs the port with the phone line on it is a serial port for a modem....I remember my old 14.4 global village modem having and s-video type adb/serial connector.
dude, you didn't even show us your shirt LOL! It fits perfect with this review. I have the one that just shows the wagon, and says, "You have died of dysentery." hahaha. Classic.
80/40 is the number of columns the screen displays vertically. Think C=, 40 colums for the C64 mode, 80 colums for the higher res mode. I will have to research the DVORAK thing.
The 40/80 switch was 40 or 80 columns. Giving you more characters per line. The 80 column card was an add on in earlier apples ][ computers. Also I am sure that youean meant QWERTY keyboard layout not DVORAK. Look to the right of the TAB key. Anyway, great little machine. I did a lot of BASIC programming on one of those.
Roy Scheider's character in 2010 used this computer on the beach with a LCD screen attached to it. Don't know if it was real or just a mock up. I always wanted one of these back in the days, but they were super expensive. So I had to make do with the Atari 800 I had.
Awesome trip down memory lane! I first played Oregon Trail in 3rd grade, back in 1987! It was on an Apple IIe. I wonder if you can hook an Apple IIc to a TV??
I wonder how much an Apple llc goes for now? I remember playing Oregon trail in the early 90's in elementary school. I believe Sticky Bear was a cartroon, and or book. Don't quote me on that. Interesting retro computer. Another 5 star vid.
yeah the 80/40 is your columns, the c64 had 40 I believe, some monitors are only compatible with one mode, and on the c128, it could go on both. though from what I remember... on the c128 it did make the difference of what you could and couldn't play (which for me my only 80 game was pacman...)
Oh man. I remember playing Oregon Trail and Reader Rabbit in Elementary School. I also use to play some Turtle game that I thought was cool just because TMNT was out back then. Also, only my class was allowed to use these comps back then because we were the "first top" (honors) class. I would literally give anything to start over in those days....
I've not used the clone you speak of, but I do know those computers were made by Vtech, who turned to making kids electronic learning aids, I've owned 2 of them in the past.
In specking of reader rabbit I have the sequel reader rabbit 2 on my Rare IBM Aptvia computer and like you I have an apple computer but its a mac IIci without the monitor but I'm still searching for one and Ive also played a mac version of Oregon trail back in 1999.
80/40 It switches between 40 column and 80 column mode. Witch columns the screen displays verticall. 40 is better for TV and older programs only support 40(40x58) but newer software like apple works takes full advantage of 80(80 x 48). thats in text mode in graphics mode(the switch becomes meaningless and the apple 2c can display up to 560 x 192. I think the software your mom had was Print Shop But I could be wrong. By the way i keep an apple 2 in the kids room
My first PC was an Apple Performer from 96. I was born much later though so i guess its only logical. I handle a lot of old PC stuff at the store where i work, i mostly handle the waste disposal and sell the crap of to recycling plants. Its funny what kind of stuff you find. Or sometimes what kind of stuff my boss thinks could still be sold. If any of you want a Mac from 1996 or 1998 come by some time. xD
I do remember the Apple 2 to be popular, but no eon I knew in the 80s and 90s had this computer. One had an Atari 400 (or 800), some had a Mac like a monobloc with everything including the screen, and many had a COCO or a Commodore computer. So, my experience level with an Apple IIc or IIe computer is approximately zero.
yep hawkez is right mate.. the DVORAK keyboard went P Y F G C R L A O E U I D H T N S Q J K X B M W V C didnt it have a rubber mat and a swtich that could let u switch between qwerty and dvorak modes? My friend on the other side of the street had a 2c, i remember the grunting disk drive and having to flip over the disks all the time..*sigh* double sided disks... Finally i dont remember the IIc having such a big screen and with color.. still nice setup mate. brought back some great memories then.
I never got to play on these, my school had 2 of them in the library, and you had to be the top students to use them, so the kids who had their homework done before class was out would always be on them playing oregon trail or number munchers
nice video i love this computer i owen 2 c and an e. I keep one in my kids room and loves to play one it. Word munchers ect well thank for the great videos your the man
Used to spend more time at my aunt/uncle house b/c they had a color monitor and better cracked games.... I was too busy playing robotron, burgertime, & spy hunter + hard hac mac... KARATEKA CHEAT!!!
I'm your age. It was at my school. This started my computer obsession. Thanks for the video.
This was the first computer I've ever owned, and my parents got it for me in 1985. It still have it, and it still works!
Way cool man. I still regret picking up a couple free Apple IIs. But when it comes to collection old computers it's all about space. Awesome video. For sure brings back memories.

Dude that's crazy. Good to know to be aware of it. Thanks.
I own a vintage Mac SE which I've done a review on a little while back. Yeah I own a handful of games for this computer, it's just Oregon Trail is one of my favs.

Great review, Gamester, love watching you get sucked into Oregon Trail. I used to love that game back in the day.
The port with the picture of a "phone" on it is the port for the modem.
@richardmaudsley77 The joysticks for the original ][ and ][ Plus did require you to pop the lid to plug it in, even on the later machines (even the IIGS) that provided an external port. (But, they didn't work on the //c, because they didn't have the same port, without making an adapter.)
I feel that way about the Commodore Amiga....
It has a special place with me since it was the computer I grew up with and learned so much on.........
Gamester81, the 80/40 button switches between the 80 column layout and the 40 column layout.
Can't go wrong with Oregon Trail! Great childhood memory, sitting in class playing this. That music is atrocious, I could definitely do without that.
Ah the Apple II C I remember this computer , it was my first one EVER . I had loads of fun on it , now a days we have computers that far more advanced than what was produced back in 1984 before the NES was introduced
this guy doesnt age at all

@TheBloodyKnife1 I use a regular HP laptop computer.
from what I can remember on my old macs the port with the phone line on it is a serial port for a modem....I remember my old 14.4 global village modem having and s-video type adb/serial connector.

my first beast was an Amstrad 1512.. it was a black and white monster but had its own mouse and gui..
That's actually the QWERTY layout not the Dvorak layout.

That was really cool :) I have been growing up with Apple computers all my life, but I am far too young to remember this one, or even had heard of it!
wow!! I used to love Oregon Trail!!! Takes me back to my childhood
@Ausbis145josh Nice the Macintosh SE is classic as well!
Roy Scheider's character in 2010 used this computer on the beach with a LCD screen attached to it. Don't know if it was real or just a mock up. I always wanted one of these back in the days, but they were super expensive. So I had to make do with the Atari 800 I had.

Thanks man. What's kind of computer is a TAM? =)
Awesome trip down memory lane! I first played Oregon Trail in 3rd grade, back in 1987! It was on an Apple IIe.

The Apple IIGS was my favorite Apple II computer.
yeah the 80/40 is your columns, the c64 had 40 I believe, some monitors are only compatible with one mode, and on the c128, it could go on both. though from what I remember... on the c128 it did make the difference of what you could and couldn't play (which for me my only 80 game was pacman...)

I don't think there's anyone in the 80's who didn't play oregon trail in scool =)
Great vid man and don't go dying of dysentery Gamester!
Oregon Trail was my escape during the school hours. That and Super Munchers.
I LOVED Reader Rabbit when I was in Kindergarden back in 96. Our school even had Apple //es.
Wow, haha, brings back memories. I used to play a ton of Oregon Trail and Number Munchers.
reader rabbit was the bomb. I grew up in the 90s and and played reader rabbit and those super solvers games.
Could you make a playlist of all your computer reviews?
@Gamester81 Omg the Oregon trail! I remember this game from 13 years ago in school
best game ever!
Great review thanks
I had one of these computers when I was a kid.
Looks like you really got into the game lol.Would of been phenomenal if I had one when I was a kid.
the arrow keys in a line arranged the way they are. but that's just me.

i laughed so hard when you said "damn you" to the elk that ran away!
I remember this thing but the screens we had at school was green and black no colors
That is so cool! I wonder if you can hook the Apple IIc up to a CRT TV and get a color picture out of it??
I've done it.
only later apple 2's did starting with the 2e as and add on card that all so boosted graphic modes

I remember a game similar, very similar to the game your playing. its more recent like 2003 and i liked it but i can't remember what it was.
I was bidding on a Apple II C once but I lost the auction. I ended up getting a Macintosh SE instead.
Which one is better for collecting and gaming, a Apple IIC/E or a Apple IIGS?
I do remember the Apple 2 to be popular, but no eon I knew in the 80s and 90s had this computer. One had an Atari 400 (or 800), some had a Mac like a monobloc with everything including the screen, and many had a COCO or a Commodore computer. I love that game. Anyone know where I can find it for Vista?
That music is roger ramjet

I never got to play on these, my school had 2 of them in the library, and you had to be the top students to use them, so the kids who had their homework done before class was out would always be on them playing oregon trail or number munchers
