PSA: UPS typically hires drivers from within the company - it’s not common that they post driving jobs to anybody as we are in a union. They only do once they’ve exhausted the list of *union employees* who want to drive and are then desperate to find drivers.
The typical route to becoming a driver involves starting part time in the warehouse. Then once you gain 6 months seniority you can sign up on the driver lists, they are posted in the hub for 1 month in October, some hubs do April too. They will also post emergency driving lists at other times when needed, still before hiring off the streets. The lists then go by highest seniority, so depending how many drivers are needed you might be waiting for a long time, like years. Then the driving school they send you to is very rigorous, I work with a few guys who did not make it through and were sent back to the hub.
I also work with many 22.4 “drivers” who are stuck in the hub right now, please note that 22.4 is not the same as a regular driver…. it’s a driving/inside combo. You’re basically a cover driver when needed but are sent inside the hub when not needed to drive, you’re not paid the same and I’ve heard people get stuck in that position not able to be come a real driver.

I’m starting as a pre loader in hopes to someday get on a truck, been a Delivery driver and package courier since I graduated high school, I started out with DHL , then Amazon Dsp Deliveries, then went to FedEx Ground Delivery services, I conversed with a few Ups drivers in my area and knew this was the move I had to make in my career as a package delivery driver, I’m not fond of the idea of working inside of a building but knowing the possibility that I could make it to driver position is worth it, I’m use to the long days heavy lifting and the need to rush to get the packages delivered on a set time schedule, what really got me interested in working for Ups is the structure, benefits, the ability to move up in positions and the respect UPS has over other delivery services.

I got my CDL would’ve loved to work for UPS but after 1.5 years of driving I was over that. I took that money reinvested it into a new skill now I specialize in redecking swimming pools. Like many have said before, what he’s saying is not the norm.
Most UPS drivers start as part-time warehouse employees.
Generally speaking you would start loading trailers or the brownies (delivery trucks) for 2-10 years, depending on your buildings’ needs.
Then you have the opportunity to apply for delivery driver(rpcd).
Seniority rules at UPS. When you go driving, you have 30 working days of probation(make packet, make book, different areas call it differently).
After that, you’re good, UPS cannot legitimately fire you for anything other than stealing, fighting, or any other forms of dishonesty or creating a hostile work environment.
The good thing is, the Union (Teamsters), will fight to get your job back if you are fired.
Hub(warehouse) work is back breaking, most people have 2 or 3 jobs while waiting for the opportunity to go driving. You can get lucky and get hired off of the street but it’s rare, and not the best way to get hired…
Learn every level of logistics and move up traditionally and you’ll have an easier time overall.

If I become a package handler at a warehouse nearby, will I get a chance to become a driver soon after? Not sure how to do it. Live in NJ near Philadelphia by the way.

    • @macwhite7257

That’s because they don’t usually post the jobs to people on the street. They hire drivers from within the company, so yes absolutely become a package handler first. But you won’t be driving right away, you need to have 6mo before you can sign up on the driving list that is only posted a couple times a year and goes by seniority.
