    Need to cycle though gears before disconnecting fill and checking final oil level to set the correct fill level - video shows this after, which is the wrong sequence. Also if torque converter drain plug is accessible, then there is up to another 3-4 litres of oil to drain, otherwise this is only a partial oil change.

      I've witnesses a pretty fair amount of gearboxes functioning worse after a complete oil change causing the owners to go mental, understandably. That's why I personally prefer to drain whatever comes out, put back it the same amount, then do it again at every 2 engine oil changes. That way you keep things working well and in about 3 of these cycles, you have pretty clean gearbox oil. Plus I find it pretty fun to do it at home and get a bit dirty

    Thanks! Great camera work. This helps. I'm watching this b/c I do not trust professional service any more. I had a MB dealership do this on my W211. Shortly after I discovered fluid leak exactly bellow the pan. Took it back to the dealer they did something to it and that fixed it. Never told me what caused the leak after their work. I feel like I could do a better job myself than the dealership just not brave enough to lift the car like this and get under it. Dealer service is making so many mistakes lately that I feel compelled to fix car things on my own and I'm not exactly young any more.

    • @ZakiGarage
      @ZakiGarage  Рік тому +9

      Exact same reason why I started fixing my own cars after seeing how shops did a bad job fixing our cars. Plus, I would be broke if I continued fixing everything at the dealership. Just be careful if you decide on lifting the car, have a good big jack and jack stands, and do some research on the proper lifting points on the car, and have backup support under the car.

    • @ZakiGarage

      Some of the 722.9 transmissions total capacity 9L and some are 7L. But you would need less than the 9L since not all the transmission fluid comes out when doing these services and would need even less if you didn't drain the torque converter. So 6L is about the amount needed to do the job. I actually bought 9L since I didn't want to go back to the store in case the 6L wasn't enough when I was refilling the transmission.

      Way to choose is to refer to MB website for operating fluids: operatingfluids.mercedes-benz.com/category/gear-oil
      Under the gear oil section - sheet 231.1, look for the 722.9
      You'll notice there are 2 types, with code A89 (REDUCED-FRICTION) or without.
      How to know which one you have? If you have access to the MB EPC you'll see the code under the transmission part number, or the easy way to check using datamb.com.
      Mine has the A89 code so I use the 236.15 (blue oil as in the vid), or can check the 236.15 sheet on MB website for MB approved oils similar to 236.15.
      Or 2nd easier way to choose is ask an MB parts shop which oil to get based on your vin number.

      I've yet to invest in some good wrenchs so I wouldn't trust the accuracy of mine either. I would suggest having 3 different size torque wrenchs to cover all the torque range you'll find on a car. Currently have 3 Pittsburgh and 1 Tactix wrenchs, would only recommend if you're low on money. One wrench I currently have and like is the TEKTON 1/4 In 10-150 in.-lb was also cheap when I got it and has better build quality than the Pittsburgh and Tactix.

I changed my oil and the car won't move again forward or backwards after shifting gears successfully. I'm not familiar with your car's model spec. I usually check parts and oils compatibility with my local MB parts shop using the vin. However, cars that never had a transmission oil change for a very long time (way past the service interval) could experience a transmission failure after changing the oil if that's the case here.

      Check with your dealership if they have any repair history on the car, some dealers keep records if work was done there. If no transmission service was done before than there is a risk of damage if you change the fluid now. It's up to you if you want to take that risk.

      Transmission fluid is a scheduled maintenance item just like the engine oil change. Check the scheduled maintenance section in your owners manual to see how often you need to change the transmission fluid. On my car, transmission fluid should be changed every 50,000km, so I'm assuming yours is due now.

      Yes, I'm aware the share the same fluid which is way I didn't bother with the TC. The trans holds around 8-9L, what I drained was about 5L, my old dealership recites show 6L were replaced with the TC drained. Normal trans oil changes don't replace 100% of the old fluid unless doing a full disassembly, and with regular oil changes that's not a problem. This car gets trans oil changes every 50K km so I'm not worried about the extra 1L not drained from the TC. You can certainly drain the TC if you want or do multiple oil changes to get every last drop of old oil out. And the video is preformed on my personal car, appreciate you letting me know I ripped myself .
