If whoever made that clothes hanger sword is reading this, you're a personal hero of mine :) I have no idea how many times I had one those in hand and thought "hm I guess this could be made into a pretty interesting weapon" and swung it a few times through the air try to make up an idea how to model that. I never thought anyone else on this planet would have the same crazy idea, let alone try to design something from it :D thanks a lot for that :)
As a kid, I'd fling those as "arrows" same as one flings a rubber band. The wings of a large toy airplane served as a good bow for that as well. Next contest should be for kids under 10 (hoping there are still kids who play in real life rather than grow up on screens).
Yeah, imo, it should be much higher up. Also, think it is kinda odd that Skalla is so married to historical materials even when looking at designs that have limited historical use. The basket hilted for instance could still have plenty of punch if the is made out of aluminum.
Honestly chuffed to see my elven messer on here even if only an honorable mention. To answer your question, I wish could claim I thought about the practicality of the hook but was a purely aesthetic choice. That being said, I will certainly think about it from now on
It's a verycool design indeed, close one. Also noticed quite a few people lately have been inspired by kriegsmesser (including myself, although i haven't participated in the contest), i like that.
RIP the guy who lost first place by submitting a different design. Both looked fantastic, though! Hell, all of them were awesome! I absolutely adore these design competitions. It's outright astonishing to see the amount of detail and artistry that goes into all the designs!
13:44 Ey, the Scraper was mine! Glad to hear it almost made it to third place. It's been rattling in my brain for the past 15 years lol. I'm just glad I finally designed it.
Oh whoa! I am super excited that my Half-Pole design was picked to be made! I hope that it ends up being functional and not horribly balanced. (Also I swear I submitted a comment hours ago but it isn’t showing for me so hopefully this isn’t a duplicate.)
Someone's got to make and test that coat hanger one as well. It didn't outright win, but it won our hearts. Hell, the hook could even be how you carry it as well. It even looks like one of the easiest ones to make. It needs to happen.
The hardest part would just be cutting out the hole for the handle and even that wouldn't be anywhere near prohibitively difficult, now that this video is out I'm sure at some point we're going to see that thing in real life LOL
I have to say I really like this video! Cool to see everyone's ideas. I have many drawings and sketches from all the many artists that have works at Baltimore Knife and Sword over the years. Mostly stuff from Rick Janney and a pile of unseen designs from Ilya Alekseyev. Cool stuff Thanks!!
Being placed into the honorable mentions for my Norse trident gave me the biggest smile. I’m happy to have left even the slightest impression on you. Love the video and congratulations to the winners.
You design actually fixed the biggest problem most fantasy tridents have. Your two side prongs don’t interfere with the thrusting power of the main central point
@@theillustriouscosmowitch617 Thank you, it was actually one of the factors I considered in my design. Something capable of thrusts while making the two extra blades useful.
I hope there's 20 crazy blacksmiths, each one ready to make one of these weapons, willing to send them to Skall for testing and reviewing. That would be awesome!
The Ramrist reminds me of a concept i came up with several years ago. Basically you take the blade of the Ramrist and put it underneath the length of a rifle, i was thinking of a musket like weapon. So it's cool to see someone else had a somewhat similar idea
The Gatorade mace strongly reminds me of Godendags or especially Tetsubos, in that it is a two handed club with a long grip section. The addition of a disk guard is a cool touch. Great to see so many cool weapons!
I'm so glad you liked my Ramrist design Skall!! If I get more openings to make more videos, I'll make sure to make one myself and test it out. It's supposed to be a heavy beast of a weapon for abnormally big individuals, but I'm still interested to see if I can swing it! Thanks again to you and your friends involved in this fun competition!
Mine is the blade at 18:42 !!! This is the first channel I ever subscribed to so many years ago! To hear Skall call my art beautiful and to say he would like to own a blade like my design, that just sent me over the moon! I was so devastated that I missed the first contest. I’m so stoked man! You’re one of my personal heroes, Skall! Thanks for so many years of fun and knowledge!
Very cool entries! I'm looking forward to seeing the finished product. I, also, love that withdrawn design! I especially love the extended wood handle. That one would be worth making just for science.
Dude I think you are on to something here. Letting the community collectively continue to design and evolve melee weapons and picking the best ones to be made. In fact I think that you should also put up a vote on other design choices and see which ones the community would like to have made and then have those made. If people want additional ones made then they can donate the appropriate amount and have it made. I also think that you should test the ones that win, like you would any other weapon, on your channel and see what virtues and flaws come up in testing. I loved all the designs because you could see how they were trying to solve the problem of a unique fighting weapon. Now I want to try lol. The last one had me laughing because I would be crazy enough to build something like this myself. Could definitely see it being used in a video game like Duke Nukem or Serious Sam. I really like gunblades.
The oar one looks like something the Ryukyu nation would have made had they not been subsumed by the other Japanese. I think, provided they could get the steel for it and mass produce their traditional weapons they could have arrived at an oar glaive. I think he was right to withdraw the experimental design based on the oar thing having some very tangible lore. Okinawan martial arts use the oar a lot - I'd love to see something like this in action!
Lot's of great designs, really loved 3rd entry, but would definitely wait till 1st place would be made and tested. And yeah Skall you right, that "Kamazashi" would be a great for building and testing!
21:22 The real thing used to be called KONCERZ. Polish heavy cavalry after initial charge and blow would pull it and from horseback, piercing infantry armour. Koncerz could get just as long as this one. Yet, already a heavy piece would turn to anvil-class with any additional guard. It was something like simplified, heavy uber-colichemarde. Bare spike and a limited cross-guard some even with no guard at all.
I'm so glad to see short, heavy polearm variants getting more recognition as a concept. The nagamaki had some real success obviously, but because Europe's weapon traditions favored half-swording and zweihanders to fill that niche instead we missed out on some really solid potential designs.
Whoever made the "Koprite Kpesh" - you made nearly the exact sword design I'd envisioned every time there's a weapon design concept. Thanks for submitting it where I never did.
my "coup de coeur" is the spiked mace. simple, slick, extremely versatile, doesn't seem to compromise its functionalities. only weakness is the lack of protection or defense. a good weapon to be used in full armor i suppose.
I do love these competitions and I saw your post on it but couldn't think of anything original enough to submit. I'm also really bad at artwork so even if I did have something I probably couldn't show it in a way to make sense. Just shows the skill and creativity these designers really have. Also, I wouldn't mind seeing a Joke weapon contest too in the future.
The winning design will definitely be nice to see in action. The winning design before it was withdrawn would be an interesting one to test. You should consider having it made for your personal collection.
Man that trident with the bearded axes and spear blade is a great idea. Puts more practicality into it. And in a fantasy setting the weight of it wouldn't matter so much especially in that setting. Love that design as well as the hanger sword.
I would LOVE to see the second one (starting at 4:10 ) but the blade at the handle forming a guard I would make it point outwards. So if you decide to grab the weapon at the other side, it would work like an axe.
The way I’d modify it would be to have the “handle” go all the way to the sword tip as a grip, and a pointy end jutting out the bottom side of the sword to act like a pick/scythe.
Interesting, stuff like this gives me some inspiration for my own work. Especially the shortened polearm weapons with different proportions as I have had some difficulty coming up with all my various weapon types and combinations.
Any chance of getting individual pictures for all of these, or if they're posted on the artist's pages somewhere perhaps a link to them? I'd legitimately like to talk to the maker of the Mace-pike hybrid about maybe getting that design for use in a custom piece in the future :)
There are some very talented folks in this community! Nice work to all you guys. This was extremely enjoyable. I had one question about the comment regarding there being no sword/axe hybrids. Wouldn't the Khopesh be considered an example of a hybrid that was a fairly effective compromise? The artist of the second design even seemed to take some inspiration when creating the point of the weapon. I am very interested to know what your thoughts are on that. This was a great video with a really fun premise. Thank you.
To whom ever did the 1st place and the withdraw/replacement design... I love them!!!! If either of these get made, I want one!!!!! Give a heads-up for the next design contest!!! I got one I think y'all will absolutely go nuts for!!!!!
Didn't realize you were still doing these, shucks. I've got a couple of interesting designs which have been in my head for the last couple of years. Maybe I'll catch the next one.
Some of these looks very similar to real world weapons. 23:52 for example very closely resembles a Tang Dynasty mo dao - a sword-polearm hybrid where some versions have a shorter wider sword on the end of a pole, and some other versions having a longer thinner sword on the end of a pole.
@@Skallagrim Bummer, but it's understandable. Can I send my design to you through Discord to hear a few words about it? I was waiting for an oppurtunity in some kind of fan design themed livestream but somehow missed this oppurtunity!
Craziest weapon I thought of was a broom axe. Essentially broom length handle with a thin battle axe head at the top where the brush would be. I know it's nothing mind-blowing like the cool shit here, but this all made me feel personally inspired to come up with shit of my own. Hopefully I get artistically skilled enough and creative enough to maybe one day make it into this competition ! Anyways, excellent video, my personal favorite was the double pump action shot guns pole arm
The Wyrmclaw Falchion (22:07) is my favorite besides the first place winner. It looks like the perfect zombie apocalypse weapon (sidearm) to me, assuming a sheath could be made for it.
The coat hanger looks like a LARP gun dagger I used to use, it was very effective . the nerf gun part wasn't alwas the best, the secon shot was iffy but the dagger part was the best shot mele weapon I ever had.
13:25 by sheer coincidence I just finished a mace spear Combo weapon. It's not fancy, just a 2in steel ball welded to a short piece of pipe and a spear head off Amazon both affixed to an 1 1/4 in. Thick 36 in. Long oak shaft. The mace head makes it so you can choke all the way up on it and hold it that way with relative ease. However the spear makes it so you can pretty much only swing the mace diagonally or you rish impaling your stomach.
I've been thinking about something like the mace-pike. Putting the thrusting part on the opposite end to the bludgeoning part gives you better control over the point because of the balance. Also removes the concern of bending the spike/blade if you swing and don't hit quite as intended. But there is the concern of what options it gives your opponent if he grabs it.
Daww, my design didn't make it, oh well I didn't expect it to get any attention since I gave up on it near the end... Either way, I absolutely love a lot of the designs and I do want to try and contribute more in sketching in general... Well... When I feel like it... Congratulations everyone! I look forward to the next competition!
A curiosity, if you make the cross guard as rough as a rasp, wouldn't it allow you to defend yourself and ruin the enemy's blade? Maybe even giving it an irregular shape so as to break the blade.
Does the silly Canadian push-dagger ban prevent you using a double-bladed katar with blades at the 11 and 1 o'clock positions (RH, palm down, where a sword is at 9, the ban applies to 12 and an ice pick is at 3)?
OMG... THE FIRST PLACE ONE... IS ALMOST EXACTLY WHAT I HAVE BEEN DREAMING UP IN MY HEAD.. And always wanted to draw it. But I dont draw much. Ever. So I kinda just let it stay in my head. BUT THAT IS ALMOST EXACTLY THE CONCEPT I HAVE BEEN THINKING OF FOR ABOUT 2 YEARS.... NOT QUITE. just after finding all these hema. And medieval type chqnnels... Alex I think the name was.. good for you brother.. nice
If I knew about this conpetition then I would have sent in a saber design but the D guard would be a katar. Or a sleek, modified armorslayer but the side points are shifted downward to allow for proper thrusting
Dammit I had a PERFECT axesword idea! It didn't even need a locking mechanism either! It's simplified design made it (theoretically) perfectly weighted for both jobs too!
Damn, I totally missed that you were doing another design contest. I made a sword design a while back that I think would be perfect for this, just needs a little refinement. Oh well, always fun to see what others came up with, and maybe I'll get another chance in the future.
The point where the one handed halberd thing connects to the handle looks a bit worryingly thin to me. Might have to beef that part up when it's being made. Very interesting designs.
My favorite is the coathanger one... I can totally picture that person growing up in a home with a lot of siblings where they used coathangers to battle each other! LOLOL, I want to see that now...
Is there a critical angle for the distinction between warpick and billhook? I made a billhook for the garden years back and it doesn't quite cut right in the curve, its more "stabby" then I'd like and gets stuck a lot by the point instead of cutting.
Too many people had that idea, but no one bold enough to actually make it except that hero
As a kid, I'd fling those as "arrows" same as one flings a rubber band. The wings of a large toy airplane served as a good bow for that as well. Next contest should be for kids under 10 (hoping there are still kids who play in real life rather than grow up on screens).
I bet a lot of people have the idea (me included), but only one dare to actually design it.

Those where some really cool designs big props for the people who created all these.
20:35 an Estoc or boar hunting sword with a Schiavonna hilt
very cool desings :D
Daww, my design didn't make it, oh well I didn't expect it to get any attention since I gave up on it near the end... Either way, I absolutely love a lot of the designs and I do want to try and contribute more in sketching in general... Well... When I feel like it... Congratulations everyone! I look forward to the next competition!
@ Skallagrim In my HEMA club we made a bear-trap buckler. you should test one of those out it was pretty cool.
Those coat hanger daggers remind me of a karambit
my fav might actually be the wheel mace
Is there anywhere where we could browse the submissions? I would love to have a look myself as many of these look amazing!
A curiosity, if you make the cross guard as rough as a rasp, wouldn't it allow you to defend yourself and ruin the enemy's blade?
Maybe even giving it an irregular shape so as to break the blade.
Does the silly Canadian push-dagger ban prevent you using a double-bladed katar with blades at the 11 and 1 o'clock positions
(RH, palm down, where a sword is at 9, the ban applies to 12 and an ice pick is at 3)?
Plastic hanger bows are the real meta
I have been waiting for this for months haha Super excited, havnt even watched the video yet haha, just wanted to comment 😄
Alex I think the name was.. good for you brother.. nice
These are great designs!
If I knew about this conpetition then I would have sent in a saber design but the D guard would be a katar. Or a sleek, modified armorslayer but the side points are shifted downward to allow for proper thrusting
Hey, is there a chance you can make a follow up video showing other submissions?
Dammit I had a PERFECT axesword idea! It didn't even need a locking mechanism either! It's simplified design made it (theoretically) perfectly weighted for both jobs too!
A MAMBELE POLEARM?! WHO THINKS OF STUFF LIKE THAT THIS IS AWESOME
Damn, I totally missed that you were doing another design contest. I made a sword design a while back that I think would be perfect for this, just needs a little refinement. Oh well, always fun to see what others came up with, and maybe I'll get another chance in the future.
That’s cool
All of them were great! Congrats to all!
