CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The team takes a stand against Coach Kilmer (Jon Voight) after he insists on giving Wendell (Eliel Swinton) an injection.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In his first feature following the success of television's Dawson's Creek, James Van Der Beek stars as Jonathan Moxon, the back-up quarterback on his high-school football team, the West Canaan Coyotes. In West Canaan, the only thing that matters is football, and the man who matters is the one with 22 divisional championships, coach Bud Kilmer (Jon Voight). Mox, as the young "A" student is called, is wrapping up his senior year on his way to Brown University in the shadow of his childhood friend, star quarterback Lance Harbor (Paul Walker). With only five games until the end of the season, Kilmer pushes his players too hard, and Lance suffers a career-ending injury, forcing Mox to play and win the game. Now the starter, Mox must deal with his newfound celebrity; the attentions of Lance's girlfriend, head-cheerleader Darcy (Ali Larter); prevent his friends and fellow players Billy Bob (Ron Lester) and Tweeder (Scott Caan) from self-destructing; prevent Coach Kilmer from crushing everybody; and hold on to his own girlfriend, Lance's sister Jules (Amy Smart). Oh, and Mox must also win the championship and prove himself the hero.

Billy Bob’s delivery of that line is legendary. That’s a real teammate
Don't Mess With Texas.
That's Billy Bob.
RIP Ron 'Billy Bob' Lester
Facts he really awesome I would love to be his teammate to
never mess with a man who wears the number 69
He has the power of god and anime on his side
Love it! And he wasn't messin' around either.
This was a potent scene. A team willing to risk everything because they care about each other more than one coach's winning season
pontiacGXPfan oh stop this was ginned up Hollywood BS
You can always replace headship.
pontiacGXPfan Totally agree man. I played Varsity football in high school and my buddies always had my back and I had theirs. Football for us was a brotherhood. We didn’t let our hardass coach stop us from having fun. He always told us winning is everything. No - having a good time with your brothers is.
Sounds like you wouldn’t know anything about dedication or team play
You sound like an English teacher 😂
"You give him that shot, you find yourself another fucking quarterback!"...That's a great line!
Mox was standing up for what's right
“You about ready to lose that scholarship boy?”
He knew it was over after the "The only way we're going back on that field is without you" line.
@@jcrocky
“If it keeps that needle outta his leg, *absolutely.”*
Maybe
"only way we're going back out there on that field is without you"
quote of the year.
Agree completely
So much truth is spoken!
They're right. They are out.
Varsity Blues is one of the most underrated Football movies of all time. If you enjoyed playing high school football it’s Easy to relate and very accurate
Even if you didn't
Blud peaked in hs
Extremely accurate
Lol underrated?! When this movie came out it was THE movie about high school football or football in general. What would be a higher rated movie about football???
@shannonly23 yeah it was...this and Any Given Sunday.❤
Hard to believe Paul Walker and the big lineman aren't with us anymore. Rest in Peace men.
joe pichler(kyle moxon) has been missing and presumed dead since 2005
His name is Ron Lester
Ron lester had surgery, lost all that weight then he died of organ failure wonder what happened. Sad thing is he regretted doing the surgery, said he would never had done it had he known it would of dried up his roles. He said he woudl of rather dried over weight and rich with roles then where he was when he died.. Thats sad.@@PapaLobo94
The actor that played mox brother disappeared in 2006
@@jameswalker9228 i went to high school with him
Jon Voight is amazing in this. What believable corruption- then, at 1:58 he realizes it's all over. The way Voight's voice starts to waver just nails the devastation.
He went for it this movie, man. Did not care that this was an MTV Production starring Dawson from Dawson's Creek, Voight is always gunnin' for that Oscar, and I love him for that.
@@chendaddy I think they took out the best part out of this clip where he's just a silhouette in an empty hallway clapping his hands together and saying, "Ours to win boys, ours to win!" He knows he's lost control but he still doesn't completely get it. A great performance like you said, he gave everything like he always does.
@@Klos1neMN Same. In fact, I hate these clips sometimes because they almost always miss the most important part of the clip they are showing just so you can hear that annoying sound effect and watch they ads for other videos for 40 seconds. lol. But that next scene of him walking down the dark empty hallway makes this moment whole.
The scene really makes you feel bad for the coach
Bud Kilmer will never ever coach another game again. - Moxon
You can really see the fear on Moxon’s face after the coach tried to choke him. Sometimes you capture real emotions when actors lose themselves in the moment and almost forget it’s a movie
*Rumor as it that Coach Kilmer is still walking down that empty hall saying, "Let's go! Let's go!"*
O.o
And all the players unanimously agreed and said No Mr Sir
Lost his credibility upon the assult
Lmaoooo
Jon Voight was amazing in this role. He portrays coach Kilmer just right at the exact moment that he knows his career is finished.
I’m no football fan, but THIS scene was the ultimate climax for me. Perfect example of loyalty and truth.
0:44 the I think the door slam was actually improvised. Saw this in an interview, Jon Voight did it to help the quarterback power through his lines because he was stumbling. Awesome improv which made a great scene
The real story about a winning team is the players belief and respect for each other. I've been there and done that! Varsity Blues was a great movie!
RIP Paul Walker and RIP Ron Lester
Gone too soon!
Who’s Ron Lester
JDG Rushy google it fool. Billy Bob. Why ask that ignorant question?
@@jonhendrickson9701 That's not ignorant at all
Rip
This totally reminds me how it was for me when I played football in high school. Our coach was a retired Marine drill instructor and he was a hardass. It’s alright to be strict and have a good school spirit, but our coach was brutal. We always stuck up for each other when we knew he was going too far. We were like brothers and had each other’s backs. That’s what football is about - to have a genuinely good time with your fellow teammates. Not to be #1 all the time.
Did you guys win a lot tho?
As a USMC vet I can vouche. We can be hard and strict, but it’s to make you better. Hate us now, thank us later when you’re successful.
You and I took different routes to the same conclusion. I walked away ffom football (and later athletics) after our Athletic director (football coach) went too far one night in a game. He could have caredless about the athlete,he just wanted to go far so it would look good on his resume for his next job.
Depends on what you mean by "too far".
Winning doesn't hurt though and yes it feels great being number 1 and sucks to lose
I love how the coach lost his power in the scene.
The coach was an narcissistic egotistical maniac that used his team as an supply for his ego.. he never cared about anyone but himself that's why he treated his team like garbage because all he was out for was HIMSELF in the long run... He used and abused... As soon as he knew that he was exposed for what he really was... He just walked away because he knew and not only him the narcissist knows that at this point its an done deal the mask came out for who they really are
Serves him right. See what happens when you let your pride and ego get to your head. I wouldn't be surprised if they fired him and banned him from coaching in any other schools. People like him, make me sick!
@@dariusmazaheri9305 At the end he never coach again
i mean , is he really going to fight 20 , 18 year olds LOL. Its not like he is paying their bills.
@@dariusmazaheri9305 it’s just a movie buddy
This is how you deal with corruption on any level. Put it out on front street in front of everyone and shine the light so bright there is nowhere left to hide
I flippin love this movie...

"He's in a coma"
"Answer my question can he play?"
I don’t care what you gotta do Reggie ray stays in the game goddamnit 😂

ilovebaconsandwiches he is like Kyle chandler from Friday night lights, but just the worst.
He is a legendary coach were he is God of there area. Why would he ever leave?
@Jon Davis He doesn't care about the players and only cares about winning games.
Nick saban?
That what has beens try to do to others.
One of the best most underrated Highschool Football Films of all time. Texas Football on Friday Nights... just can’t beat it
I can’t believe this is Jon Voight. Such a great actor
@JustinChristopher-ov7gw How did you find that out? What's your source?
I liked this movie and especially the acting of Jon Voight who played Coach Bud Kilmer. Voight's performance was disturbingly believable. Being a coach of sports requires "tough love" to bring out the best in your players (especially football) but Kilmer is probably a sociopath.
Kilmer injects his players with painkillers so they can keep playing which causes permanent injuries. Second string quarterback Moxon takes the starting QB job after the first string QB goes down with a season ending injury. Moxon gets accepted to Brown University based on his academic performance, meanwhile he has many reservations of how Kilmer treats him and his teammates. Kilmer informs Moxon if he doesn't give into his often unreasonable orders he will have Moxon's grades "reviewed" - thus potentially keeping him out of Brown.
The whole town turns a blind eye to this behavior. Sound familiar ?
Finally the players unite as a team and stand up against their tyrannical coach.
Contakum k
I remember a scene where two guys in a bar were talking about how Tweeder stole a police car and how they didn't steal any cars then they saw Kilmer there and asked what they were talking about and they denied everything.
Man this movie hits hard when you’re in your mid-40’s and think back to the good old days of high school
It's impossible for us to be mid 40s...this was just a couple years ago right?
@@williammorrison6228 Amen. As I'm typing this, it's the beginning of October and I'm putting together a Halloween costume (Joe Kane, The Program...another legendary '90s football movie..lol). I managed to find one of the helmets they used during the filming of that movie which is a real 1990s Riddell helmet. I hadn't put on a real helmet since my last game as a senior in 1999. The minute I put that on though.....it was like 20+ years melted away. That same pre-game sensation came right back.
@@zlinedavid dude I received a Joe Kane #13 jersey for my birthday last month...so epic...also a johnny utah #9 ohio state jersey if your familier with that....90s was the best time man

And I've gone over the top for this, but what the hell....the kids think its awesome and so do I. Managed to find a pair of really good condition red Nike Air Diamond Turf IIs from 1995 to wear with it. Well worth the 50 bucks.
This movie has only got better with age! Very powerful scene when the team took up for each other!
A lot of people will disagree with me, but I thought Jon Voight did a tremendous job doing that Texas accent.
i agree
100% agreed
Patrick Krier I agree.
Patrick Krier only if you compare it to Van Der Beek's.... well I don't really know what he was trying to do but it was real awful.
I'm from a small town in TX like this one, and I thought that Paul Walker's dad's accent sounded like Goofy with down-syndrome.
Watch the beer can scene for that shit.
Years later and this movie still amazing !
I watch it like I never seen it before
Perfect acting from everyone in this scene, especially The coach watching his stellar career come to a screeching halt.
"Coach says it's alright to bleed from the ears." - Reggie Ray
0:53 a true leader
0:24 Billy Bob, gentle and sensitive as he is, is a goddamn savage.
The director probably told Jon Voight in preparation for this role "Just be yourself".
Jon Voight is nothing like this.
@@Romans8-9 He's a pretty giant A hole in real life my man.
One of the best movies of the 90s. A modern day classic.
Legend has it that coach Bud Kilmer is still in the coaches office 😂
Only in Teaxs high school football means a lot to a town that’s why I love it
This movie and Any Given Sunday are 2 of the best yet underrated football films in cinema. I’m not even a huge football fan or fan of anything other than boxing but these 2 movies were enough to grab ahold of my attention.
i remember when people thought movies like this were not so great, now they look amazing compared to the shit the bring out now a days
oh yeah.
TOPGUNCANADA00 I don’t need to post an opinion cause this dude said it better then I woulda.....a,en Bro!!!
Love family history
I hear that!
Ehhh it's still average lol
I love how all the other coaches stood there and didn’t do anything while kilmer took all the heat lol
and the other coaches let Lance and Mox coach the team in the 2nd half. The coaches were just as willingly complicit in Kilmer's tactics.
This scene was OUTSTANDING...That line from JVDB "You give him that shot and you find yourself another f**king quarterback" is gripping.
Rumor has it he is stil saying “Let’s Go”
RIP Paul Walker you will be greatly missed
"You're too slow billy-bob", wrong Kilmer, he's just a head of the pack!
(Rest In Peace, Ron Lester) #Spatch #BillyBob "Put me In There, we'll Block it"
The Memories will live on and as such we will never forget you, or paul. Life has downs
and life continues to take away our heroes, but one thing remains, your greatness. In fact---
Heroes always leave us earlier then we expect, but the foundation you leave behind is unmatched.
Take Care in the heavens, and watch over us as we remember you for everything you mean to the world
I love billy Bob and when he sticks up for his teammate
You cut it off!! Excellent scene. Timeless.
Underrated scene in an underrated film.
Even as a sports fan, I don’t like most sports movies because they tend to be too fabricated and cliché, but this one was an exception. I really enjoyed it.
This was my favorite movie in HS. Watching it now, it changes the way you see it.
I like how coach is kinda worried when billy Bob says something
This wasn't a perfect movie, but it had it's moments. I always enjoy watching it.
Shane Helms I feel it's an underated movie.
Dawson's Creek, The Fast and The Furious, Hawaii Five O
I hear ya. Although there's no such thing as a perfect film and that's OK.
Jon Voight deserved an Oscar nom for this role
I liked winning district titles as a player. I may have a slight limp 20 years later but my titles will never wear out.
this scene is memorable!! great acting from Jon Voight.
When this film came out, I recall thinking, “James Vanderbeek from Dawsons Creek is gonna be in a football movie? Lame”. Man was a I wrong.
Vanderbeek played a hell of a role in this and the tension between he and Voight was fantastic. And what else can you say about John Voight? What a performance.
Before he was a very big name. R.I.P Paul Walker.
The Army is crawling with leaders like coach Kilmer.
I was lucky enough to make it through high school, college, and some minor league football without ever having a coach like Kilmer.
I had plenty of coaches who yelled. Plenty of coaches who demanded the world of us. But underneath all of them I could tell that they cared.
My high school linebacker coach: "THAT WAS YOUR FAULT!"
5 seconds later: "I love you, and I want you to be the best you can be."
I had a coach somewhat like that...not as abusive but can relate to Wendell...I trained for 2 years lifting weights, practicing and thought I earned my starting position...first game, coach started a freshman over me...that told me he didn't care....quit after that game (it's high school)...won the state championship that season too...at graduation the team captain called me up to the stage and presented me with a championship ring like they had...I was floored I still had friends on the team even though I left them...they knew why I left, they tried to plead with the coach to start me but he didn't care...I felt bad for quitting but I didn't want to play for a coach that didn't see the hard work I put in...I was a bit smaller than that freshman but he was black and I was white, nuff said
God damn it! Watched the movie right now and the end made me cry because of Paul Walker.
Jon Voight also played legendary basketball coach Adolph Rupp from Kentucky in Glory Road.
Coach Kilmer was a national treasure
You give him that shot, you find yourself another foooking qb, goosebumps how he wasn't willing to let Wendell throw his future away
Akkkkwarrdddd....that moment when the whole team decides to spare your life.
Despite this being an MTV film. Jon Voight was the best actor in this film. His acting ability to make you absolutely hate his character is so good. He really is the only reason this film is even remotely good, and I do like this film.
God amazing movie, i remember this coming out in HIgh School, just pure awesome
Omg! What an amazingly well written and acted scene! This scene alone should of allowed Varsity Blues to win multiple academies!!! I say let's write a petition to reverse the adacemies to re-award this one with at least 5, because of this scene alone!!!!!
It’s criminal that Jon Voight didn’t win an Oscar for this..
This scene perfectly describes loyalty.
I love this movie. Showcases emotional abuse and how toxic it can be, and men really stepping up.
This my be my favorite adult film from Paramount now.
It inspired the hell outta me.
I saw it at home on either July 15th or 16th.
Let's go!(claps) Let's go let's go!!(claps) Let's go let's go!(claps)
Always loved that, trying and willing so hard..just to find yourself standing alone left to self pity and put yourself into that very recently finished grave you dug yourself
It's just crazy, simply crazy. ✌️O.o
John Voit did a great job 👏🏾 One of my favorite movies
I wouldn’t have threatened break his legs I would’ve done it. Too much shid like this at the workplace these days.
RIP Paul Walker awesome performance you will be really miss 👼 👼 👼
This movie is 20 years old ! My high school days long long time ago
At the end of it you almost feel bad for Kilmer. Its as if he doesn't even realize what hes become and how something that once meant so much to him destroyed him. I dont believe his character was always a bad guy or coach but winning became all that was important.
Kilmer having the Same passion for the Donald
Idk what it is but coaches have HUGE Egos
The Jaguars locker room to Urban Meyer
The boys knew the true meaning of the word Team!
Throughout the movie Kilmer keeps saying things like "My perfect season" and "My district title". He cares about winning and playing God to do so and nothing else. So great to see the guys finally stand up to the megalomaniac monster!
He's a textbook narcissist
Voight was awesome in this role. IF you start to hate the character for what they are doing, then the actor is doing his job.
Jon Moxley (Dean Ambrose) actually got his name from Van Der Beek's character Jon Moxon from a fellow wrestler who mispronounced the name Moxon as 'Moxley'
I like hearing the coach saying billy bob
These new kids and teens no nothing about this classic movies. School football was one of the best times of my life. I'm glad I enjoyed every moment. Kids/teens enjoy those days because once it's over it's over no going back.
I love this movie, in large part because of this scene; I had it on VHS, but I’m surprised I don’t have the DVD.
*team follows Kilmer out of the locker room and onto the field*
Mox: WTF GUYS?!?!?
Greatest football film period
I played when we had two a days in the South Carolina heat. It was like practicing in a steam room in full pads. We got one maybe two water breaks a practice.
Ohio Heat was no joke either.
Jon Voigts performance carries this movie, hes so believable.
one of a kind never find another.
Jon Voight plays such a badass villain
Especially in real life. His daughter wants nothing to do with him
Kilmer is EVERYTHING that a typical HS football head coach in the South let alone Texas is BUT unlike Kilmer most of those Coaches know when to be human in situations like with Lance Billy Bob and Wendell . Kilmer at that point had let all those wins go to his head and evidently been that way for years based on how Sammys Dad talked . But hats off to Mox and the rest of the Key players for putting Kilmer in his place and bringing him down a few pegs . Obviously something MANY past players wish they had done.
When I was growing up our highschool team pretty much won every district title lol. It was State that was important
Who knew when this movie was released that Jon Voight was essentially playing himself.
Coach Kilmer would never give a shot to anybody who that would jeopardize a career he was the greatest coach ever now trust him!!!’
Brotherhood!!! We stand as one!
Yep for me in Texas in the 90s good ole Glenn back in the day
that gentlemen, that gentlemen is a football team
Good acting by all involved....especially Jon Voight
when Kilmer says what did you say to Tweeder I wish Tweeder would have said you heard me
One of my fav scenes. :)
Paul Walker before he gave up football to be an undercover cop.
