CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Coach Gaines (Billy Bob Thornton) redefines perfection; he urges his team to "put each other in your hearts" before they take the field.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
H.G. Bissinger's best-selling true-life account of a few months in the life of a high-school football team comes to the screen in this adaptation written and directed by Peter Berg. Odessa, TX, is an oil town in the western part of the state that's home to the Permian High School Panthers, the football team with the best winning record in the state. Odessa is a town with more than its share of problems; the decline of the oil business in Texas has set the city's economy into a tailspin, and racial tensions still erupt into violence on occasion. But football is the one thing that brings all the people of Odessa together, and on Friday nights every fall, as many as 20,000 people fill Permian's football stadium to watch Coach Gary Gaines (Billy Bob Thornton) and his boys try to lead the team to victory. As Gaines works to build a winning team in a town where victory is prized above all else, however, his players struggle through the emotional trials common to any teenager and ponder the fact that there is little future in their hometown...and that a championship season can be as much a burden as a triumph. Friday Night Lights also stars Lucas Black, Derek Luke, Jay Hernandez, and country singer-turned-actor Tim McGraw.

"You got two more quarters...and after that most of you will never play this game again as long as you live." Those are words most high school football players have heard. When the reality sets in, it's an incredibly hard fact to face.
It's not just football either, but great point it really sucks when it's over.
My last time with pads and helmet...
So dam true
That's so true...
I myself played football from frosh-junior year. Didn't get to play my sr year due to unfortunate family circumstances so I didn't even get to hear that speech.
But then later, when I was active duty in the Marines after high school, I did get to suit up one last time in the Marine Corp intramural football leagues, and I was so damn greatful for that. I was able to get that last hit out of my system and I've been at peace with it since.
You can play basketball or soccer, even baseball but football's different
"Because forever's about to happen here in just a few minutes." - best line of his speech. Anyone that played HS ball can relate to this.
true...
kewlfx im 35 yrs old, havent seen the grass in 17 years, this still hits me the same way it did when I played. Some things never go away
So true- part of something larger. I think anyone who has done sports or served in the military ---- or even in corporate fights knows how the deeper meaning.
kewlfx I always liked that part the best, it's just so real
+Yo Yo I've done both. Do I miss both? Absolutely. I miss the lights and teammates just like they do and I also miss my battle buddies in Iraq.
This movie should have won an award. Hollywood doesn't realize how real this is in Texas.
Kirk Pierce I thought the same; only a 3 star out of 4 rating. My only conclusion was that it portrayed a strong Christian message, and Hollywood doesn't like religious messages.
crusader68 ummmmm silence ?
Nahh... football is still popular in Texas, but it is not this intense anymore.
Yep. I live in Texas and this hits hard
Kirk Pierce “In the rest of the country, football is a sport. In Texas, football is a religion.“

"My heart's full."
Billy Bob at his absolute best. Wow
Ya gotta remember that line at the end of the film when he's replacing the seniors on the board. Holds Mike's name for awhile but doesn't keep it.
I get to play college football. But there is nothing like playing with the kids you grew up with in high school
Matt Holl nothing better than representing your town and playing with your friends
Criminally underrated movie. This is what high school sports is all about.
it is the best football movie in my humble opinion
@@slappymcgillicuddy7532 agreed, the best sports movie in mine!
lmfao "criminally underrated". Another one of those guys who heard "criminally underrated" once, thought it sounded good, and applies it to every goddamn thing he loves and thinks is underappreciated. How exactly is this film underrated? Most people who were born in the 90s and onward consider this the best high school sports movie ever, next to maybe Remember the Titans. It spawned a television show, it's considered a Billy Bob Thornton classic, most people in sports who's seen this film (and the biggest demographic for a film like this would be jocks) will tell you this scene and this speech is one of the greatest they've ever seen. This is not a "criminally underrated" film lol
This film isn't underrated.
Goat football movie
"Because forever is about to happen here in a few minutes." Oh, man.....
Sitting here watching this thinking (worrying) about my son's senior season upcoming and wondering if forever didn't already happen.
Yeah, that's one of the greatest lines ever. Easily. That line hit me like a sledgehammer in that theater. That single line is better than Pacino's entire Any GIven Sunday speech.
@@alexayers9463 I didn't find Pacino's speech that inspiring. I thought it was written by some guy in Hollywood who never played sports in his entire life.
I remember when forever happened to us my senior year. We got blown out though
@@TzUuup Yeah, Pacino's speech is more about Pacino's prowess as an actor than it is about the content of the speech. He put substantial heart in a simple speech and masterfully executed it
as a former texas hs football player, this makes me tear up every time lol. this is my fav football movie ever, by a landslide.
The book this was based off I heard was amazing. It showed the true side of high school Texas football. The times where teammates would beat up one teammate for a mistake he made.
The book is banned in several states. Everyone should read it. It's "Friday Night Lights"
The violence and racist relevance doesn't allow to be shelved on city libraries.
MeximanandAsianator it is a wonderful book, but it shouldn't be banned. It gives the most accurate depiction of Texas high school football at the time. Yes, some of the language isn't great, but it shows the realities of Odessa
+Jason Button no it doesn't it paints Odessa in such a bad light where most of what was in the book was false or overly exaggerated
So am I. Get your head out of the high school years.
I love these types of movies because it shows how a game can give a lower income community hope. The whole town celebrates one of the few things that brings them a sense of joy to be apart of an area that seems to be forgotten.
The book goes way more into the the social / economical side and uses football as a method to cover disgusting marks. I love the movie but the book is tht much greater on a deeper level
@@christiancavazos6749 that's awesome
I love that they didn't go Hollywood, and win in the end...But more poignant with a heroic loss, it reinforced the speech, they left it all out there and that wasn't enough - but there was pride in it.
Ok man, not me. Now nor ever
im in control, be bi or whatever then
@@mwnciboosuch a heartbreaking ending.
I got injured my senior year of Lacrosse. This movie gave me strength. This movie also inspired me to become a coach myself, and inspire a future generation of athletes to be the best people they can be. Underrated movie.
Hope you’re doing well brother
I'm a senior in high school and had to fight tears watching, this because I know that come this November...my career is done. If I could...I would go back to 7th grade and start it all over again
Same here bro
+Pablo Escobar III bruh you trappin'; not playing football
Same here but for soccer 😭
Why end there? How do some players make it to the NFL then?
I was once blind but now I see because a very few amout of players make it that far, I've seen AMAZING High School players who don't even make college for the most ridiculous little reasons. " he's a little short " - said to someone who was about 6'0 maybe 6'1 i seen colleges not give a scholarship to the unanimous league MVP who kept a 3.0 GPA because he got a D in a class freshman year. I seen players get hurt and never play again. And of the players i know who played in college they'll tell you how much harder it is to even make the NFL. Just being invited to the combine is a huge honor.
"I want you to put each other in your hearts forever, because forever's about to happen here in just a few minutes." one of my favorite quotes of ALL TIME

2021. I always come back to this for motivation. Don't matter if you play sports. This speech goes a long way in life. Take Care All.
"You've got 2 more quarters, and after that most of you will never play this game as long as you live...." For anyone who loved this game with all their heart, that statement hits hard.
I can only point to a few times in my life where anything has made me cry. This scene gets me every time.
I literally just cried from my last down in football. To last deployment to my last day in the military this speech just hits home
greatest movie soundtrack ever
Ralph Livingston explosions in the sky - your hand in mine
MrRister21 perfect song for this scene
Peter Berg loves him some Explosions in the Sky
One of the greatest speeches ever, not just sports. “Boys my heart is full.” I’d follow a coach like that thru hell and back. I know the actor playing Boobie Miles had legit tears in his eyes.
Can you live in that moment…as best you can!?
Great line. Can you be present in reality? Can you see the truth? Did you do everything you could? Is he taking about a game or our lives? Beautiful!
Billy bob Thornton could be the next person to Play Nick Saban if they made a movie about him.
Genius idea
Find out if I get custody of my baby boy tomorrow. I’ve literally tried everything I can to make sure he’s safe and in good hands. Hearing this brings peace to it all. I did everything I needed to do to as a father to fight for my son. Praying that the court sees it in the same light. My son will be a man one day….and he’ll know that I did everything I could for him. I love you Hector.
R.I.P. Coach Gary Gaines
1949-2022
Explosions In The Sky fits this movie so well!
For every single one of us whose chance slipped away, who were just never quite good enough, or who just didn’t apply ourselves when we should have, this hits so hard. It’s a tragic yet beautiful thing. “Forever is about to happen”.
Clip was uploaded 5 years ago and the movie came out in 2004. Since then, I've come to see this movie in a totally different light and now have a new perspective. This is not suppose an attack or meant to incite an argument, but it's just what I took away from the movie. One could even see it a subtle message the movie was trying to make.
You see, FNL is NOT about football.
It's about what happens when people (in this case, young aspiring athletes who think the highest peak of their life is winning a football championship) put all their chips on one plate, and in some cases (especially for Boobie Miles), they face a devastating loss. The insurmountable pressure put upon the team and their coaches from the town, school, the sport boosters, and their own family and friends makes them think they NEED to, in a sense, be "perfect." The people of this movie make football rule EVERYTHING about their lives. Look, I know, that is just what football is to a lot of people. Trust me, I know, I grew up in Texas myself. But I think if you analyze the main character( Mike Winchell), the movie portrays him sometimes as an unwilling participant. He's doing football mainly because of his mother and feels like its the only way out....but I would seriously doubt that he earnestly and completely LOVES it (football). There is even a scene in the movie where he talks to the coach about feeling "cursed."
The speech assures them that winning the game is not what will make them a "perfect" person, but rather it's how they treat each other and other people AND how they live their lives after this moment. When he says that "forever is about to happen", he's not just talking about the game, he's talking THE REST OF THEIR LIVES. It's a turning point for a lot of them, because they realize that essentially life as they know it isn't "over" after this game, regardless if they win or lose. Highschool football does not necessarily have to be the peak of their lives. It can a memorable moment sure, but not by any stretch the absolute BEST or most IMPORTANT part of their lives.
yea that's basically the point of the movie. it's all bigger than football. some of the aged characters who had dead end lives and still bring up the high school championship missed out on life, and that's what the coach was stressing. I can't remember the characters name, but Tim McGraws' character ,imo, was the most interesting. he is so ridiculously hard on his son to the point of being borderline abusive, and his character does a 180° with his short speech. "you've got one year to make memories.." he was someone that peaked in high school and didn't want the same for his son, but maybe thought that was inevitable. he even showed signs of regret for his past, like how he just throws his ring out of the window. he was a tragic character who wasn't the best at raising a kid, yet he clearly loved his son and wanted him to go farther in life than him. fnl is a damn realistic film with its layered and nuanced characters
You'll probably never find another brotherhood like the one you had back in high school. Those guys had your back, on that field, no matter what. I'd give up everything to play another down
💯

i miss those halftime speeches man.. getting the team hyped up to go out there and knock some heads off..if you’re reading this and are playing ball in high school.. give it all you got! you have no idea how much i would give to relive this time in my life.
Relive your old HS glory days? That’s pretty sad, to be honest. There’s so much more to life.
I am a football player for Permian High School right now. And i cant explain to you how much of a great coach Coach Gaines is. He's done more than expected to get our team to the nationals he works hard year round and and he makes us believe that we can win any game i am more than honored to have been playing football for this team under the supervision of Coach Gaines. We're hoping to go to nationals this year and we will. GO MOJO
Fiction...
@@ThatGuy-tg7cvit’s a real football team we played them in here in north Texas Odessa 30 mins away from me
Go MOJO even 10 years later
RIP Gary Gaines
My dad graduated from Permian, class of 84. He still has the Letterman jacket.
I wish I could go back and be getting a halftime talk again I would trade a whole year of my life to go back and play my senior season or just my last senior game
Being there bro...
Me too bro..

The “being perfect” applies to every aspect of life!!!!
I think as a school , student, college student this is for me slightly more home hitting than Al Pacino speech. How many people can relate to this with their old team mates before your last match together. Great film, even better speech
The Pacino speech is pure shit written by a guy who never played sports and acted by a guy who never played. Phony as hell.
because jocks are usually great drama writers
The Al Pacino speech is terrible.
Rest easy coach 🖤
Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose
Amen 🙏
Imho the most heartfelt, inspiring monologue in the history of cinema. It's truth and beauty transcends any game.
Our HS football coaches showed us this movie every year before the first game of the season... Respect from Georgia!
I am a football player for football for Permian now and I've never met coach Gaines but I'm pretty sure he's as good of a coach or better then our coaches rn because every coach at Permian pushes you to your fullest to succeed and I'm proud to me a MOJO football player
It’s ether u got hit so hard and u cant type or ur fucken lying
I can't believe this movie only got a 3 out of 4 stars. This is one of the best movies capturing the spirit and rite of passage of young men, who's lives are forever changed. It's very rare when a movie gets it right. The film critics need a lobotomy. This took place back when there were no cell phones, internet, or college loans handed out like Halloween candy.
Amen! Best sports movie I have ever or will ever see.
crusader68 best sports movie ever made
But 3 out of 4 stars denotes a good movie, one that's definitely worth watching. I'd probably go a bit higher, though. I love this movie. Great story, and Peter Berg directed the shit out of it.
crusader68 the critics never played ball that’s why. They can’t relate
crusader68 probably cause people aren't much into, football movies. Maybe that's why, but it was one of the greatest movie ever. It deserves a 4 outta 5 stars.
This is the mantra that guides me through my life. With clear eyes and love in your heart. With joy in your heart.
My favourite sports movie, from my favourite book. BBT absolutely nailed the part of Coach Gaines from the coach that is described in the book, this speech demonstrated the love the coach had for his team. My heart is full ❤
Sports are an amazing thing.. I played football basketball and baseball for 15 years. I cry when I think about the times I had and what I wouldn’t give to go back. I’m nearly 35 and my is still to play in the NFL. Dreams never die, opportunities do.
I've probably watched this scene 50x and I still get choked up. My heart is full.
A lot of non-football players feel this movie was too over-dramatic and fantastical, but kids who grew up with football know how ridiculously true-to-life the movie is. This was always my favorite scene, because Coach Gaines' speech basically sums up the entire message of the movie. Winning is not the only mission, trying your best to win is.
Particularly high school football in the south. For a lot of folks the high school ball game is all they look forward to in life.
This speech is so, so good. It’s impressive how directly a Hollywood production was able to hit it on the head. You don’t realize it till it’s over, but this is gold.
“Being perfect, is about being able to look your friends in the eye, and know, that you didn’t let them down, because you told them the truth. And that truth is that you did everything that you could - there wasn’t one more thing that you could’ve done. Can you live in that moment?”
It gives me peace to know that at the end of my collegiate career, I can look back and honestly say that there wasn’t one more thing I could’ve done. I left it all out there, and I love this speech for giving me and everyone else who feels the same way something to hang their hat on.
Billy Bob Thornton improvised this speech. Really impressive
lol I doubt it.
My heart is full
Man this movie brings back memories of my last ever halftime which was the most emotional one ever, down 28-0 to Boerne-champion in the 2nd round of the playoffs, our captains rallied us and but the speech that was the most emotional was our own quarterback, which had all of us in tears. We still lost 35-16, but I do remember after the last handshake I took off my helmet and realized it's over and cried like I never have. High school football absolutely made me into a man I'm glad I played all 4 years 🏈 I'd do anything to suit up one more time 😔
This is my favorite scene in any movie ever. It makes me inspired, sad, motivated, and hungry every single time I see it
No one will ever grasp how much of a place this movie holds in my heart.
I still remember my last game as it happened yesterday... That feeling of brotherhood in the field, one of the best feelings in my life
0:17 The real Boobie Miles is right next to Boobie.
@IM2BiZ yes, that is him
Been in and out of jail since this was filmed
Wow. That’s tough.
"Because forever just about to happen in a few minutes"
wow
"Because forever's about to happen here in just a few minutes." Its been 32 years since I heard a speech such as this, I did play semipro a lil while and nothing compares to the brotherhood of high school football. Its like a bond that you would take a bullet for your teammate. This was a emotional scene because so many have felt this. I am 51 now and nothing in life has fulfilled me unfortunately as sad as that sounds as the game. I guess because its such a big deal in those times, the letdown is hard to be "normal" again. To all that have gone thru this. Totally get you.
I’d argue the bonds formed in the military are a great deal more durable. Having done both and all
Goosebumps every time.
can you live in that moment...with clear eyes, and love in your heart? time to run through a brick wall
1:17, Clear eyes, full heart... CANT LOSE
Watching this speeach makes me cry because I played football in high school and I took it for granted. I never realized how much I missed the lights and the field until after it was all over. Seniors, enjoy every minute of your final year of high school football because it will be forever for some of you.

Best sports speech ever. Not because of Billy Bob’s perfect delivery, not even because the kickass soundtrack. The words are so true and embody everything sports teach us about hard work and companionship.
Clear eyes full hearts can’t lose
Played ball for 7 years. Stopped to skateboard. This brings it all back And i regret ever stopping. Miss it
Chills, almost tears. Every single time.
lthe speech then finishing it off with the our father prayer just chills.
Best sports movie ever!
“Forever is about to happen here in just in a few minutes”. Hits hard.
This is such an underrated film. There's nothing like it. This speech tops Any Given Sunday. Most sports films are about the professionals and the champions, this film is about 'everyone else'. Those who didn't make it, and the love and pain of the game means even more to them. Not a day goes by I don't briefly think about 'Forever's about to happen here in just a few minutes'.
15 years since my last snap as a High School Football Player.. 12 years since I played my last college game..
I miss these days.. Telling my sons and my nephews playing now don't regret these times cause you can't even have them back.. Just like Billingsly's dad was telling him.. My dad told me the same.. Never forget these days..
This movie is literally the epitome of high school sports, specifically football. It captures exactly how it feels for high school to come to an end.
Exactly
I rewatch this so often
I'm in marching band and my show is gridiron and it's about football and it going into the song hall of fame and the sound effect is this speech and by it gives me chills every time it's so good
Forever is about to happen November 1999 we may not have went to the playoffs but I just only played organized tackle football for only three seasons n that lone stint of varsity also for track. After that I hung it up for good. That's deep than most that never played sports especially high school football
i was 7 when this came out in 2004.. im still watching this in 2017 when i am 20.
I saw/heard a real variant of this speech. I was a practice assistant/equipment man for a very good HS team, and our team was getting their asses handed to them in the state championship game. Our d coordinator-who was more fiery than the HC-told the team “You have two more quarters in your football playing careers to go out and play the way you know you CAN. This is your last chance to do what you do best as a team”-and the team came out with their hair on fire and almost pulled off the comeback against a very good opponent. The script writers and Billy Bob Thornton both hit a home run, to mix sports metaphors lol….
Still my favorite speech from any sports movie.
RIP Coach Gaines.
A wonderful film. A hidden gem
When he says you have two more quarters and that's it then he says most of you have been playing the game your whole life that makes me emotional even today. Basically I remember when I had two quarters left and after the game that was the end of it forever. Even though I haven't played football for 16 years in high school I'll never forget the memory of playing for 4 years once it's done it's done and it's been done for a long time
The coach standing next to Boobie Miles is the real Boobie Miles.
If not best one of the best talks a coach had done
This inspired me to write an A paper in college. Was the only one to argue perfection is attainable out of 300 something students
Still my favorite movie to this day, love me some football miss them high school Friday night lights
"my hearts full... my hearts full"
who cut the onions???!
My high school coach took all of the seniors on the team to go see this movie..a moment I’ll never forget..we lost in the 2nd round of the playoffs.. every time i watch or see the title of this movie it takes me back to those moments and remembering how it felt when I took those pads off for the last time.. 💔
Man I almost teared up when he says ...i want you to think about boobie miles...that was touching
If you’ve played football in high school or college etc. this scene not only Will bring you to tears but Should
I was born in 88' in Odessa,Tx . I still live here and my parents, brother and I have seen what this town ( now small city) has gone through and overcome. It was really fucking racist back then. My mom is mexican and my dad ( who isn't my dad, but he's raised me my whole life so he's my dad.) were criticized and ostracized from his family cause he married a mexican women and not some white girl from the east side . Now it's not as bad and the economy made it to were jobs are everywhere. But, those years when there was nothing, but football were crazy. I remember being 5 and going to a game at Ratliff cause my mom would tape the games to be played later. The intensity of it all, the lights , the crowds were just ... I can't describe it. It's a feeling you have to experience. I don't like football as much as my dad or brother, but I respect the game and the players. They were once stars in this town . The movie is really inaccurate, but drama sells. I wish they would have shown the rivalry between OHS and Permian. Jesus it was fucking bad. It was basically East side vs. West side , Poor side vs. Rich side. It's still that way. I live on the West side of Odessa and we don't have near as much shit as the East Side. It's always been that way. Times may change some things, but some things never change.
Now Permian doesn't win much and people don't go to games much anymore. It's a shame , but that's how it is.. I'll never forget that feeling and experience of being at one of those games and witnessing what they did. It's something you have to experience to understand.
My coach gave a speech similar to this, at last years state championship game. It was halftime and we were winning but it was still so sad, i looked at most of the seniors and they were all crying. HS Football isn't a sport, its a brotherhood.
This movie is not talked about enough!
The greatest sports movie ever
My HS coach gave us this exact same speech 2 decades eariler
“there was nothing more you could’ve done…” - he didn’t ask them to play a perfect game he just asked them to do their very best… that’s the most realistic thing any coach can ask of all his players.
Damn. This scene just rocks me to my soul every time.
When the brilliant Explosions in the Sky score kicks in, the hairs are standing.
Gareth Southgate should adapt this for his team talk for the Euros final
Great movie . Saw them for real in Dallas playoffs years ago man what a great program . Texas football is the best .
Chills every time.. I really need to stop watching this, I'm ready to run through a damn wall
The score for the film adds so much to the scenes. I forget the name of the band but damn the clips of their songs hit perfectly.
Love this friggin movie. We watched it as a team before our final playoff game which we lost. My last time on a football field in pads. 18 years later, feels like it was yesterday.
Got all conference a few times. I could've played lower level college ball but after that game I knew it wasn't meant to be.
Coach always said you'll never forget the smell of the grass. Summer two-a-days. Looking up at the stands with a couple thousand cheering for you. Your brothers who had your back.
I have vivid memories going back to that time. I hope my kids get to experience what I did. I'll never forget those days.
the band is called Explosions in the Sky
Greatest moment in my life was catching a long bomb td pass my sr. year. Texas high school football baby!!
kd47730 how old are you now? Please tell me your not over 30 or even 25 for that matter. Because if your around that age and that’s still the best moment of your life....
Here because the goat of this speech passed today and me and the boys would listen to this speech before every high school game and it will never not give me chills! RIP Gary Gaines
I'm ready to run through a wall and be perfect.
I was around 16 when this movie came out and I remember myself and a bunch of my friends going to see it in the theater...Great movie..Pretty underrated sports movie too imo..The real ones know it's great.
Greatest sports movie of all time. Not everybody goes out on top
Theres one winner at the end...
"Well I want you to understand somethin'. To me, being perfect is not about that scoreboard out there. It's not about winning. It's about you and your relationship to yourself and your family and your friends.
Being perfect is about being able to look your friends in the eye and know that you didn't let them down, because you told them the truth. And that truth is that you did everything that you could. There wasn't one more thing that you could've done.
Can you live in that moment, as best you can, with clear eyes and love in your heart? With joy in your heart?
If you can do that gentlemen, then you're perfect.
I want you to take a moment. And I want you to look each other in the eyes. I want you to put each other in your hearts forever, because forever's about to happen here in just a few minutes."
