      People make that joke about the Victorians, but they had ten kid families and merely thought it proper to keep their enjoyment to themselves. Now the childless say mean things about them, as someone of importance once said 'judge by the fruit'.

      @@vorynrosethorn903 I used to specialize in the 19th century, and I've never noticed that myth being said more by childless people. It's a commonly held belief stated by people of all backgrounds that don't know the era well.
      In the Victorian era, that sort of attitude was promoted by wealthy people who could afford the kind of privacy that could hide their more "base" urges. Some people in the middle class aspired to it, as many people today also try to act and look like rich people they idolize. As with many attitudes-including the ones explored in this wonderful video-it says a lot about the people promoting it, sometimes more than about the era itself.

    Ngl the thing of how in glasnost a lot of movies started to overuse sex reminds me of my country of Spain. After Franco's death and the end of his regime which was incredibly catholic and forgived any type of sex talk outside marrige extremly (it usually said that if you wanted to see sex you had to go to France). This maded so when it ended in the late 70s a lot of movies started to put sex everywhere, at a softcore porn level. This is called the Destape (the uncovering) and it eventually faded around the 80s.
    One funny thing tho, it is usually thought of very right wing men in Spain, specially those nostalgic of the dictatorship, as men who usually go to stripclubs and hookers, and it comes from the time of the dictatorship as tho it was a very religious dictatorship, not everyone in it was it so much 😂

    There's a famous brazilian journalist who went to the USSR in 1985 for a series of interviews with common people, and during this he asked some soviet youth what they thought about sex. The young man starts answering in what appears to be the textbook komsomol appropriate answer ("we do not have sex before marriage, it's immoral"), but when the reporter asks him "not even with your girlfriend?", he drops the façade because, in his words, "no one there knows me anyway" lol

    Bizarrely, in at least two Soviet satellite states, some major cities opened official clothing optional parks. Both East Germany and the Czech section of the former Czechoslovakia had parks with official clothing optional areas in the 1980s. These areas were rarely fenced off or in super remote areas but were actually right in the middle of major cities like east Berlin and Prague. A few cities in West Germany opened up clothing optional parks as well. The communist party in these places, though, that having these parks would help get rid of the Catholic church. Even though communism is gone in Germany and Czechia, a few clothing optional parks still exist in both countries, even today, although it wouldn't surprise me if they get closed down in the next few years.

    • @RobespierreThePoof

      Soviet cinema is actually a key topic for film historians and film theorists. The early Bolshevik period has been studied and researched extensively - to the point where you can expect that every one of your favorite Hollywood directors will have studied it in film school at least a little bit.
      The later period of Soviet cinema (Stalinist propaganda films and the latter socialist realist periods) is much less known in the West, even among scholars. The great director Tatorvsky is a rare exception to the rule, but he's also a special case.
      So, if it interests Setarko, he would certainly be doing a public service by paraphrasing the historical scholarship on those periods - most of which remains in Russian, untranslated.

    So many abortions! It was mad, and many women were driven mad.
    Contraceptives didn't really become widely accessible until after the fall of the USSR and abortion was still considered a standard procedure and "contraceptive".
    I personally know of women that had 10-15! abortions because of this, and at least from what I've been told that was rather common.

      It also does say a lot about the inherent sexism in the country. Not surprising why they're a bit behind the curve on equality.
      Condoms would have been cheaper. Pulling out would have been easier.
      Those many intrusive procedures means that is the only option available, albeit grudgingly.

    I find it hard to believe, that it would be possible for any state to enforce such a ban on sexual expression, unless there was popular support for said ban. There must have been some kind of popular backlash against the early sexual revolution in the young Soviet Union. Otherwise, stopping all that sex would not had been practical. @Setarko to my knowledge, there was a Brazilian author (Jorge Amado) who made a lot of success in the USSR. He was a communist and wrote denouncing social inequalities in Brazil. He had a book, called "Captains of the Sand", that was published in the USSR. IF my memory does not betray me, there was some sex scene in the book. Do you know if the book was altered? Or if in the context of him being a foreigner denouncing social inequalities of capitalism he would get a pass?

    • @Setarko
      @Setarko  7 місяців тому +4

      Yes, he was one of the most popular foreign authors in the USSR. But I'm pretty sure some of his first works were not published in the USSR in the 40-50s, maybe because of the more strict censorship. As for "Captains of the Sand" - it was published fully only in 1976 when it was okay-ish to publish such things. In 1952 it was only an 11-page excerpt that was translated to Russian tho.

    00:00 🚫 Absence of sex in the USSR was a catchphrase from a 1986 teleconference but refers more to censorship than actual sexual activity.
    02:36 🔓 In the 1920s, a period of "free love" prevailed in the USSR, marked by eased divorce, decriminalized homosexuality, and liberal attitudes toward sexual relationships.
    08:11 ⚖ Stalin's era saw a shift towards conservatism regarding sexual freedom, emphasizing traditional family values and condemning sexual promiscuity.
    14:50 🗣 Sexual topics were taboo in Soviet society, leading to public silence and euphemisms, with little formal education on the matter.
    19:49 ⛓ Non-traditional relationships, including homosexuality, were punished under Soviet law, reflecting a stark contrast to earlier revolutionary ideals of sexual liberation.

    Lovely lovely video I've never seen such a proper analysis of sex and sexual relations in the USSR, I live for such wonderful cultural insight. I live in the almost 'nationalistically' sexually liberated Sweden and the difference in how the Union and we handled sex in our societies' recent history is stark and fascinating!
    20:20 traditional values upheld, all good Setarko👍😁

    • @JohanDanielsson8802
      @JohanDanielsson8802 7 місяців тому +1

      @@Cocoisagordonsetter It is not that different to other Western countries. The age of consent in Sweden is generally 15, unless the adult is in a position of authority or special trust towards the minor, in which case it is 18 instead. Kids below the age of 15 sometimes have sex too, it is usually accepted as long as it is with a peer of their own age.
      Attitudes to sexual fidelity wary a bit between different people, of course. However, if you are in a commited relationship, and have not discussed with your partner about where these limits go, you have to assume that it is monogamous, and that having sex with other people is not socially or morally acceptable, at least as long as the relationship last.
      Some people may of course accuse a man who sleep around of being a shallow swine, or a woman who sleep around of not respecting herself.
      Marriage exist, but Swedish couples usually live together for several years before they marry. A significant portion never marry, but just choose to cohabitate with their partner instead. These relationships may be as long and stable as marriages. Marriage is to many Swedes first and foremost a legal arrangement, which it is up to each couple to evaluate the legal and financial implications of.
      Buying sex is illegal, but being a prostitute is not. The reasoning is, that buying sex is exploitative towards the prostitute. It is also illegal for Swedish citizens to buy sex abroad. This is also reflected in societal norms; men which buy sex from women are almost seen as rapists by many Swedes.
      There are two main reasons why we Swedes may be seen as nationalistically sexually liberated. The first one, is that for example sex before marriage was normalized here, somewhat before in some other Western countries. This is the reason for much of our (by now somewhat old) international reputation on this topic: we were early out.
      The other reason is that we have large immigrant groups from places such as the Middle East and Africa here. These people come from countries with much more sexually repressive cultures, which make us in the Swedish majority population seem a lot more sexually liberated in contrast.

    Banning pornography was not such of a bad thing!! teenagers were more oriented to romantic and serious relationships. Less sex talk, less images about sex life in public space, less irrelevant entertainment TV shows, more time for reading books, education, professional and spiritual growth. The level of schools were much higher in communists countries than in the capitalist ("liberal") world. All students from communist countries were able to indicate USA (or any other country) on the world map. Many people from USA cannot do that. Related to homosexuality, it was just ignored, did not existed a repression towards them. in the books dedicated to the sexuality (yes, existed such of kind of books in communism) that was described as a deviation from the normality, but was not condemned, or used irony. Was considered a kind of disease of a very small number of men. I am not nostalgic of communism, just I am trying to see the reality as it was. Family life were more stable at that times.

    Whenever people talk about the Soviet Union in the 1940s just remember that social freedoms in the ussr were still far more than in the west and the rest of the world. Social freedoms don’t just emerge spontaneously. They are a reflection of the economic root of a society. Freedom is something a society can afford it doesn’t just exist for its own sake
