Very helpful and interesting but where can I get me one of them Carsons.
thank you for asking them real questions
I'm a custom-ordered, limited-edition piece. All sold out now, sorry!!
@@carsonmckeemusic Poop, and I wanted 2 Carsons, a stereo pair.
@@carsonmckeemusic ☹️
@@Steveanator123456 one over the shoulder I assume?
The "Tesla MTV Unplugged Concert" comment at 10:00 minutes in when you solo'd one mic made me spit out my drink laughing. This was a really helpful video guys. I struggle a lot trying to learn the daunting world of Pro Tools when I record and this gave me some options and simplified a lot of things.
"hit it." made me laugh out loud. Epic video Josh, very informative.
I love that song " Over the shoulder, spaced pair".
What song is it?
It’s on their upcoming album
I like over the shoulder, but not spaced too much.
I hear words that sound like English, but i have no idea what you are saying. Fascinating nonetheless. It gives a glimpse into how your videos sounds so good with such a seemingly simple setup. Thanks for the video, and keep up the good work.
Please do more of these. Maybe a video on how you mix everything? Guitar, vocals, bass, etc.
The “idiot bass player” scenario was a little too specific for me to not think it’s happened to you guys lol this was super helpful!
Your Tesla unplugged reference was priceless. I am over 40 and I do recall the time M Tv actually was about music. Josh, you are an old soul. That is a good thing.
Looking forward to the song “Chunk of your Love”.
Sounds like a reprise of whole lotta love
I basically understood nothing you were talking about but, I enjoy your videos so I think you’re doing something right for my ears.👍👍🇨🇦
What a chunk of information
Very chunky
This went over my head pretty much 100%, but I like it anyway because it gives a bit of insight into why your recordings sound so great.
I’m almost certainly never going to record myself playing the guitar, but I’ll happily watch this just to see/hear you guys singing, playing, and diving deep into your craft. 10/10 will watch again.
"its not about the mic, its about where do you put it" well said ;) 1:10
I appreciated the deadpan humor and an insight as to how you achieve such excellent audio quality in your recordings.
I love how this tutorial isn't about gear but about creativity and thinking outside the box! Thanks a lot, keep up your great and inspiring work!
what an asset to your country and planet you young guys are.
It's great how the Mrs. comes in at the end and tells Josh about that chunk of something. She's got such a sweet voice.
I love this, could you do a video on your favorite plugins and when to use them?
Sure! Thanks!
Tried the over-the-shoulder-spaced-pair technique today for a guitar track and it came out really, really nice.
I have followed your playing and recording for 10+ years. These insights to the production and recording are my most favorite. You can start by your online recording lessons..sign me up
I love Carsons voice. It sounds so classic.
Thanks for going to the trouble to share your knowledge!
I loved this video. Wished it had been an hour longer. Thanks Josh and Carson and camera crew!
Love Carson's face when Josh says 'Secret Sauce'.
You're a couple of goofballs. Very talented, accomplished, technically astute goofballs. And I mean that in the most complimentary way. As someone who is not a musician (but I do voice over work, so I'm basically familiar with microphones and DAWs) I understood very little but enjoyed it very much.
I haven't noticed that ring before, Josh. If that's new and means what I think it means, congratulations sir!
woah! this dude's had a personality this whole time. LOL! more, plz!
@@tcarney57 i don't wanna clip random links, ya'll know what i mean; you wanna just explain it?
Hey Josh! Big fan of your videos. Can you please make a video on how do you record such crystal clear audio when you're outdoors and explain just the overall process? or probably a video about how good of a recording can you do with like a cheap $20 microphone and how can you get the best out of it? It would be very interesting to see your take on that!
This was very interesting. I love Roses and Gloom. That is my favorite song from Carson.
This is actually really helpfull for me and my band, thank you
Really looking forward to hearing the full version of "Chunk of Something" on your upcoming album
Man y’all always manage to naturally pull off that elusive 70’s songwriter vibe. It’s just in y’all blood me guess. Thanks for sharing these techniques.
Keep doing these type of videos! Very helpful for a music production student who was hit in the face by a global pandemic. Thanks!
Can I just say I love the thumbnail.
I’ll never buy all that equipment. Although back in the day I spent much time trying to get good recordings on my acoustic guitar. However I do very much appreciate the quality of your recordings. They always sound absolutely amazing
I think it is one the keys to their excellent performances. Excellent recording is definitely a must.
All that equipment? You can do any of these techniques with like $300 total. Edit: Sincerely nothing negative meant here. But all you need to do ALL these techniques are 2 directional mics, a figure 8 mic, and a DI. There are affordable versions of any of those. You probably have most or all of those things.
The incredible range of skills and talents you both have are truly amazing. Just love everything you do. One off-topic question, Josh.. hopefully not too personal. Did you get married recently? Never recall seeing you wearing a wedding ring before.
Learned so much while being so entertained. For sure gonna use these acoustic techniques for my videos too. More recording content please!
I see The Brothers Karamasov behind you....you gents never cease to impress. Keep up the good work. 👍
Thanks for great inspiration. I just love over the shoulder setup.
This is everything I needed to know and didn’t know I needed to know! Thanks!
Nice bass playing too 😂
This is really fun and helpful Josh. Thank You! I really appreciate your expertise and have thousands of followers that will love to hear your perspective.
Being a super hero, as usual. Thank you!
This is the stuff I've been searching for. No nonsense, jargon free and inexpensive. The D.I. / mic for outdoor is pure gold. Thanks boys!
More of this!
My first video was Tennessee Waltz, and man you guys have grown so much! Thanks for getting me through the years! Cheers!
Great video, please do more like this! The production on your videos is always so beautiful
Really nice video, Josh (and Carson)! I'm definitely gonna try to adapt some of those techniques to myself. Also, the aesthetic of this video is just amazing as well!
Carson has a million dollar voice. These guys are so damned talented
Thank you Josh and Carson for these helpful tricks!
Thank you for all, Josh and Carson! You are both the great musicians, and you inspired me to record the music! I see your playing and singing progress for ten years and believe that i can the same too. Сome to Russia, we want to listen you live =)
I liked the tl;dr at the beginning!
You work and work and the results reveal that you have. Still, it isn't ALL about acoustic perfection. I worked in the back hills, no music all one summer other than what I made myself. Finally I was driving a truck that had a super radio and I heard the Animals' Sky Pilot coming in from like a thousand miles away. It was full of static, faded in and out, plus the noise of the truck, but it was just perfect. Sort of like "hunger is the best sauce on any food"
This is a life saver, I have an AKG pencil mic that I couldn't get to sound good, boom, put it up high as shown, works great. Thanks!
This is awesome! Would love your recording insight on other instruments and scenarios as well! I am a really big fan of the sounds you've been able to create through your recordings and would love to know more and help inspiration!
And last but not least... a great sounding Martin. Helps a lot.
Love the stereo image of your horizontal mid side setup. There is a great sense of space and it sounds like it leaves room for other stuff.
Good and clear instruction, really useful for solo guys like me trying to get to the next level. Thanks guys 🙏
"in summation" love it
Should subtitle this one "I actually use dark mode Pro Tools!". I've used these techniques in the past and they're all really sick, although I'll admit the spot mic + di isn't one I've used in quite the same way in the past and that's quite a cool idea. For real though, dark mode pro tools? You're a stronger man than I!
Really loved the video. Nice to see someone with your kind of content/audience/expertise create a video that may or may not run the risk of alienating the audience and not treating anybody like a dumb-dumb. Absolutely great work my guy and as always, we love to see it.
“That is like... Tesla’s MTV unplugged concert bad” lol I hear you
No idea what you were talking about most of the time, but it was enjoyable.
“that’s the title of the video” and that’s when he decided it seems
You’re not wrong
The best part is Josh's imitation of an "idiot bassist" messing with Carson. :)
Wow thank you for this. I am useless with mic placement. Over the shoulder with the vocal mic is great. Can’t wait to try it!
Guys thanks a million for this! I love to play, and sing, but dudes I have no idea what I’m doing beyond just taking the guitar out and playing. All of this info (I’m too intimidated to ask for in the music shops) is gold. Cheers 🥰
freakin' music geeks and theater majors, man. Too much fun. Tone it down guys. 😎 Besides that, good info Josh and that other guy. Thanks for sharing. ❤ I aspire to be like you when I grow up... Oh wait I'm 58... Ugh! 🙄 Never mind.
Love the training video aesthetic
Just awesome guys! Thanks!
Loved this video! So interesting to hear more of your thoughts of recording (because your recordings always sound great haha)
Really like this side of your channel....you should do more of this sort of thing.
Good stuff
Your MS technique is delish.
The sound out of that 000 is remarkable. That's an amazing instrument, and it sounds better every time I hear you play it. Terrific video! 👍
Thank you for your insight. This will help very much
First time I've ever heard your speaking voice. Love your work you beautiful nerd x
I'm gonna try the "Over The Shoulder ". Thank you , Josh.
I love every second of this
Love this - favourite channel on YT. You're performances are incredible, you're both hillarious, and so informative on recording. Much love 🙏🏻
There's always an excuse to hear Carson singing :D
Great advice. But i couldn't get my eyes of these two douglas Adams Books on the shelf. So much of great storries in it.
LOVE this video! THANK YOU!!!
While I was watching this...something flew over my head !!
True nerd talk. Loved. Cheers
Excellent and so amusing,. So amusing,, ,
Thanks Josh - I love your work mate. Cheers from down under!
Wow this is super helpful to someone like me who’s early on learning how to record music. Please more of this! Would love to learn how you feel about direct plug in of an acoustic electric into a recorder like a zoom. Also, about how to properly balance an electric guitar with an acoustic on separate tracks. Thanks for sharing this
Good tips! I learned a couple of useful things that I should have known years ago. Love that mic/DI trick. Thanks!
That horizontal mid-side is excellent. I've never even heard of it! I've stayed away from mid side since trying it a couple times and never liked it but I should give it another shot with this technique (even though the MPAII makes it really easy to do).
This was great, a lot of it above my paygrade.
What I love about these two is there is always fun , intelligent, professional and very interesting things to learn and enjoy !
Wish you, your families and friends the very best over this holiday season!
Hope all is well !!
I remember ordering unavailable in stores, records, by mail, from Rounder, thinking it was the cat's ass !
Where would I and my playing be withoout YT ?
I swear when Carson is strumming that chord progression (the one he plays through most of this tutorial) I am hearing the opening chords of Disappear Fear’s ‘Deep Soul Diver,’ an amazing song on an amazing album by an amazing (and too often overlooked) duo, and if that’s the case, I am now ever more of a fan of Carson and Josh than I already was (and I already was quite an enthusiastic fan)! If not, no worries, sounds similar and is worth checking out. 😊👏🏽🎸🌟
the video looks gorgeous
Very interesting video, thank you!
Thanks for the tips, love the music, looking forward to Taylor Bloom colab. Thinking: never ending song of love - delaney & bonnie, needles and pins - the searchers
Carson is madly talented too, we knew he was a fabulous vocalist already but what great playing, singing and song choices. You guys have a great rapport, cherish that.
How did you two meet? Was it at some precocious musical maestro's hothousing academy? Or did both mums go to the same WI group and make jam together and you just had to get along? Loved the mic placement info too thanks. I only have space for one flimsy mic stand, it droops with just an SM58 on board. Learned to play and sing at frantic speed and follow the Mike down as it gradually dipped toward the floor. A gas-adjustable office chair helps enormously. 👍Sadly the recordings and playing are still not worth sharing.
Zabardast... cheers from Toronto!!!
nice idea with the horizontal mid-side, I'll have to try that!
Thanks
Love this. Please do more like it.
I love the host vibe
